shrink
\n
Advanced Micro Devices Inc.’s growing series of Epyc server chips has been the talk of Wall Street in recent quarters, but that may switch to gross margins in this quarter’s earnings report.
\n
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is set to follow yet another rough earnings report from Intel Corp., and once again could show gains in an area that caused pain for its larger rival.
\n
AMD is scheduled to report third-quarter earnings on Tuesday after the close of markets, after Intel reported an earnings beat Thursday that hardly mattered as revenue came in light. More important to analysts was Intel's forecast for declining margins over the next few years as its chief executive doubles down on new manufacturing capacity to try to retake its former glory as the undisputed chip leader.
\n
That led to downgrades on Friday and Intel's worst one-day performance since the chip leader said it was going to delay its next generation of chips, an announcement that had fired up even more investor support for AMD back then.
\n
Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon, who has a market perform rating on AMD and a $110 price target, said AMD will continue to benefit from Intel's transition, and called attention to an AMD metric that was one of enormous concern during Intel's call: Gross margins.
\n
\"We believe Street gross margin estimates appear unaggressive going forward (which is not something we have typically said for AMD), and the company is now (for the first time ever) starting to return cash,\" Rasgon said.
\n
That underscores another show of how Intel and AMD are transitioning with respect to one another: Analysts on the Intel call were very concerned that Intel's margins were falling despite company assurances they would stay just above 50% for the next few years. Meanwhile, AMD gross margins have been rising, and are likely to break above 50%, if not in this earnings report, then sometime soon. Three months ago, AMD reported gross margins of 48%, up from 44% in the previous year.
\n
While AMD is referred to as Intel's \"smaller rival,\" that gap has been steadily closing for a while now. At Friday's close, AMD had a market cap of $145.34 billion, or nearly 73% of Intel's $200.66 billion. Just this past summer, AMD's $111.5 billion valuation was a little more than half Intel's $219.5 billion cap.
\n
One other are to look at will be data-center sales, as finally swung to a gain in that important segment in the quarter. Over the past two quarters, Intel has posted significant year-over-year declines in the increasingly important category, while AMD has more than doubled its sales. That raises the question whether Intel clawed back some market share, or whether data-center sales were just generally better all around, which AMD's report could answer.
\n
What to expect
\n
Earnings: Of the 34 analysts surveyed by FactSet, AMD on average is expected to post adjusted earnings of 66 cents a share, up from 41 cents a share reported in the year-ago period. Estimize, a software platform that crowdsources estimates from hedge-fund executives, brokerages, buy-side analysts and others, calls for earnings of 72 cents a share.
\n
Revenue: Of the 32 analysts polled by FactSet, AMD, on average, is expected to post revenue of $4.11 billion, up from the $2.8 billion reported in the year-ago quarter. AMD had forecast $4 billion to $4.2 billion. Estimize expects revenue of $4.22 billion.
\n
Stock movement: While AMD earnings and sales have both topped Wall Street estimates over the past five quarterly reports, but shares only gained the next day twice, about three months ago and when the stock popped nearly 13% five quarters ago.
\n
AMD shares rose 9.6% in the third quarter. In contrast, the PHLX Semiconductor Index declined 2.6%, the S&P 500 index rose 0.2%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index declined 0.4%. On Friday, the day after Intel's report, AMD shares closed at a record high of $119.82.
\n
What analysts are saying
\n
Cowen analyst Matthew Ramsay, who has an outperform rating and a $120 price target on AMD, said he's \"lookin' for more of the same.\"
\n
\"We continue to monitor the PC market for signs of demand slowing or supply improving,\" Ramsay said. \"Near-term, we see resilient demand outside Chromebooks, but prefer a prudent/agnostic view on 2022 like AMD took on its last call.\"
\n
Earlier in the month, research firms released data showing that pandemic-fueled growth in PC shipments had slowed considerably as the world not only wrestles with a chip shortage but overall supply-chain issues.
\n
On data-center sales, Ramsay is even more optimistic estimating that segment will account for more than 25% of sales compared with less than 20% a year ago.
\n
\"We believe datacenter passing a quarter of AMD's business could draw investor attention,\" Ramsay said. \"We remind investors that the most important business for AMD remains datacenter, which we estimate doubled in 2020, with CEO Lisa Su noting she sees the business momentum accelerating in 2021.\"
\n
Susquehanna Financial analyst Christopher Rolland, who has a positive rating and a $130 price target on AMD, said he expects another solid quarter driven by enterprise and server sales, but that \"given the slowing PC market, we do not expect mgmt to raise their FY top-line guidance as they have done in numerous updates over the last year.\"
\n
Still, Rolland expects AMD to report share gains from Intel in both desktop and laptop PCs as well as enterprise and gaming PCs.
\n
Of the 39 analysts who cover AMD, 23 have buy or overweight ratings, and 16 have hold ratings, with an average price target of $117.55.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Valuations were already stretched thin thanks to the big rally from lows hit in March of last year when the pandemic was starting to spread in earnest. The recent weakness topped off by Monday's meltdown, however, sends a message.
\n
That message is: investors are nervous enough to start locking in their profits. The fact that it's September -- typically one of the worst months of the year for stocks -- only adds to the market's woes.
\n
If you can look past the present and into the future though, you'll find there are plenty of blue-chip names poised to end the year on a bullish foot and start 2022 with the same momentum. Here's a rundown of three such names that also happen to be components in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI).
\n
1. Merck & Co.
\n
It's interesting. While shares of Merck & Co. (NYSE:MRK) participated in the initial rebound rally in March of last year, it dropped out of the effort by April and has been a laggard ever since. In fact, Merck's stock is a mere 14% above its March-2020 low, and down 17% from its pre-pandemic peak. Not being a real contender in the race to create a COVID-19 vaccine only exacerbated investors' disinterest in Merck; the pharmaceutical giant was already out of favor due to the sheer logistical challenges caused by the pandemic itself.
\n
Lost in all the recent noise of the coronavirus contagion, though, is the fact that this is Merck, which still boasts an incredible drug portfolio that includes cancer-fighting drug Keytruda. This drug alone accounted for $14.4 billion of Merck's 2020 revenue of $48 billion, upping the therapy's total sales by 30% year over year. But that's nowhere near the drug's full potential. As more and more uses are identified, some analysts believe Keytruda could produce annualized revenue on the order of $22 billion while other analysts have tossed around a peak-sales figure of $30 billion. It's a stretch goal to be sure, but even if Merck only gets halfway to that target it would still be a big victory.
\n
Nothing about Merck stock's recent performance indicates Keytruda's potential is being factored in. But, as the pandemic fades and allows investors to renew their focus on other matters, Merck shares are in a position to perk up.
\n
The kicker: Newcomers will be stepping in while Merck's dividend yield is a healthy 3.6%.
\n
2. Walt Disney
\n
Much like Merck, shares of Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) have been oddly poor performers of late. While the stock soared over the course of most of last year and into early this year, it's been mostly stagnant since April -- stagnant at a price that's 12% below March's peak. It's arguably one of the market's best reopening plays, but that nuance may also be over-reflected in the stock's 150% rally from last March's low to this March's high.
\n
There may be more meat on the bone left to eat, though, so to speak. This Dow component may be ready to rekindle its bullishness as things ease back to normal this year and into the next.
\n
One hint of this impending renormalization is the recent decision to stop selling new-release films through Disney+ at the same time they're showing in theaters. The entertainment media giant doesn't need to employ the potentially cannibalistic approach anymore to draw consumers to Disney+, nor does Disney need to worry about wary consumers steering clear of movie theaters. Its recently released Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings just broke domestic box office records for a Labor Day weekend, confirming that consumers are ready, willing, and able to visit theaters.
\n
In the meantime, while the company's U.S. parks and experiences arm's revenue is only about two-thirds of what it was in 2019 before the pandemic took hold, that's still up from practically nil as of this time last year. Disney's revamped international streaming services are also still relatively nascent in markets like Latin America, India, and different parts of Europe. This sets the stage for unexpected growth sooner rather than later.
\n
3. Home Depot
\n
Finally, add home improvement retailer The Home Depot (NYSE:HD) to your list of Dow Jones stocks ready to rally later this year and into 2022.
\n
It's another one of those names that soared for the better part of 2020 and through the early part of 2021 only to peter out in recent weeks. Valuations were already stretched thin thanks to the big rally from lows hit in March of last year when the pandemic was starting to spread in earnest. The recent weakness topped off by Monday's meltdown, however, sends a message.\nThat message is: investors are nervous enough to start locking in their profits. The fact that it's September -- typically one of the worst months of the year for stocks -- only adds to the market's woes.\nIf you can look past the present and into the future though, you'll find there are plenty of blue-chip names poised to end the year on a bullish foot and start 2022 with the same momentum. Here's a rundown of three such names that also happen to be components in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI).\n1. Merck & Co.\nIt's interesting. Not being a real contender in the race to create a COVID-19 vaccine only exacerbated investors' disinterest in Merck; the pharmaceutical giant was already out of favor due to the sheer logistical challenges caused by the pandemic itself.\nLost in all the recent noise of the coronavirus contagion, though, is the fact that this is Merck, which still boasts an incredible drug portfolio that includes cancer-fighting drug Keytruda. It's a stretch goal to be sure, but even if Merck only gets halfway to that target it would still be a big victory.\nNothing about Merck stock's recent performance indicates Keytruda's potential is being factored in. But, as the pandemic fades and allows investors to renew their focus on other matters, Merck shares are in a position to perk up.\nThe kicker: Newcomers will be stepping in while Merck's dividend yield is a healthy 3.6%.\n2. Walt Disney\nMuch like Merck, shares of Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) have been oddly poor performers of late. While the stock soared over the course of most of last year and into early this year, it's been mostly stagnant since April -- stagnant at a price that's 12% below March's peak. It's arguably one of the market's best reopening plays, but that nuance may also be over-reflected in the stock's 150% rally from last March's low to this March's high.\nThere may be more meat on the bone left to eat, though, so to speak. This Dow component may be ready to rekindle its bullishness as things ease back to normal this year and into the next.\nOne hint of this impending renormalization is the recent decision to stop selling new-release films through Disney+ at the same time they're showing in theaters. The entertainment media giant doesn't need to employ the potentially cannibalistic approach anymore to draw consumers to Disney+, nor does Disney need to worry about wary consumers steering clear of movie theaters. Its recently released Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings just broke domestic box office records for a Labor Day weekend, confirming that consumers are ready, willing, and able to visit theaters.\nIn the meantime, while the company's U.S. parks and experiences arm's revenue is only about two-thirds of what it was in 2019 before the pandemic took hold, that's still up from practically nil as of this time last year. Disney's revamped international streaming services are also still relatively nascent in markets like Latin America, India, and different parts of Europe. This sets the stage for unexpected growth sooner rather than later.\n3. Home Depot\nFinally, add home improvement retailer The Home Depot (NYSE:HD) to your list of Dow Jones stocks ready to rally later this year and into 2022.\nIt's another one of those names that soared for the better part of 2020 and through the early part of 2021 only to peter out in recent weeks. Homebuying and remodeling may have been red hot thanks to motivators like low interest rates and people spending more time in their homes. This trend, however, has seemingly run its course.\nHD stock's just been choppy and relatively unproductive since May, with much of that wheel-spinning being the result of slowing growth. While last quarter's sales and earnings both topped estimates, U.S. same-store sales growth of 3.4% for the three-month stretch ending in July loosely implies people have completed all the at-home projects they care to for the time being.\nThen there's the not-so-minor fact that Home Depot shares are priced at more than 22 times this year's projected profits, and almost 22 times 2022's earnings estimates. That sort of pricing doesn't make it feel like there's much room left for more upside.\nDon't be too quick to jump to conclusions about how consumers are feeling and subsequently acting, though. While it was largely buried by other, noisier news, homebuilder confidence moved higher this month -- for the first time in three months -- after reaching a 13-month low in August. Falling materials prices were the prompt for the recovery. In the meantime August's retail sales in the U.S. grew rather than contracting as expected, suggesting consumers are still spending on goods and services outside of the home construction market. Maybe.","content":"
Does the S&P 500's nearly 100% gain from last March's low have you a little worried about a pullback? You're not alone. Even though much of this move was a recovery from the steep sell-off sparked by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, much of it has also just been plain old bullishness ... perhaps a little too much. Stocks are still chugging along, but at times, it feels like the only thing keeping the rally going is its momentum. That's not good.
\n
If you're concerned the market bubble is going to pop soon, feel free to rip a few pages out of my personal playbook. Notice that none of them are particularly complicated moves.
\n
1. I'm scaling out of frothier, more speculative names
\n
I confess, some of the names I've picked up over the course of the past year or so aren't exactly the sorts of stocks I fully intended to hold for the long haul. They were closer to being bets than investments, which can be fun and rewarding but not exactly safe when the market starts to unravel. As the old adage goes, the higher they fly, the farther they fall. That's especially true when a company can't even come close to justifying its stock price with actual fundamentals. Yes, I'm looking at you, AMC Entertainment.
\n
Most investors innately know this is the smart-money move to make when the broad market is closer to a major high than a major low. Some investors, however, just need to hear someone else say it. I just did.
\n
2. I'm prioritizing cash over equities
\n
At first glance, this seems a lot like the aforementioned move -- backing off on my exposure to riskier equities. After all, if I'm selling anything, those proceeds are inherently turned into cash anyway.
\n
To be clear, however, I'm not merely swapping out my more speculative, vulnerable names for more reliable blue chips. I'm reducing my overall exposure to the market by converting a sizable stake of my holdings to cash.
\n
It's not always a fully understood (or even believed) facet of investing, but \"safe\" stocks like consumer goods names and utilities companies aren't actually protection from a correction. Shares of consumer packaged goods giant Procter & Gamble fell nearly 24% between last year's February high and March low when the coronavirus began to spread across the world, including within the U.S. Utility name The Southern Company fell 39% during this timeframe. Both recovered -- and then some -- but neither actually offered any true defense from sweeping weakness.
\n
The point is, during market corrections, there's really no place to hide. You'll just have to let the long-term holdings you're committed to take their lumps on faith they'll bounce back. If you don't have that faith with any particular stock, just replace it with cash until the dust settles.
\n
3. I'm adding (a little) gold
\n
While most stocks are going to be dragged lower by a market-wide correction, not every sort of holding is a stock. There are also bonds and commodities, which still trade independently of equities. That doesn't preclude them from pulling back if and when the stock market does. But if they do peel back, they're doing so independently of the broad market.
\n
I'm not bothering with bonds right now. Interest rates are pointlessly low, and with inflation seemingly on the verge of racing out of control, bonds are little more than a coin toss at this time anyway.
\n
Commodities, however, are a different story. If anything, they've become bigger movers against a rising inflation backdrop and a Federal Reserve that's being increasingly pressured to respond. Should stocks tank, commodities -- already pumped and primed -- may see a swell of demand that drives prices higher. The easiest way to plug into this dynamic is with a simple pick like the SPDR Gold Trust.
\n
4. Mostly, I'm doing nothing
\n
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I'm doing nothing about a possible market correction.
\n
You read that right.
\n
There are two schools of thought behind the decision to do nothing rather than trying to evade the impact of a correction. The first of these is the simple fact that most of my holdings really are long-haul positions I had (and have) every intention of hanging onto through bear markets. One of the greatest upsides of a legitimate buy-and-hold approach is that you don't even have to worry about temporary headwinds.
\n
The other idea at work here is the fact that guessing the market's next near-term reversal is just darn difficult to do ... so much so that most people don't do it very well. Indeed, the effort to time the stock market's peaks and valleys often does more harm than good, by virtue of getting you out too soon or too late, or getting you back in too soon or too late. The market's going to do what the market's going to do in its own time, and it's not going to telegraph what's around the corner to anyone. The best way to win that game is by not playing it at all.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
4 Ways I'm Preparing for the Stock Market Bubble to Burst
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n4 Ways I'm Preparing for the Stock Market Bubble to Burst\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-19 11:00 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Does the S&P 500's nearly 100% gain from last March's low have you a little worried about a pullback? There are also bonds and commodities, which still trade independently of equities. That doesn't preclude them from pulling back if and when the stock market does. But if they do peel back, they're doing so independently of the broad market.\nI'm not bothering with bonds right now. Interest rates are pointlessly low, and with inflation seemingly on the verge of racing out of control, bonds are little more than a coin toss at this time anyway.\nCommodities, however, are a different story. If anything, they've become bigger movers against a rising inflation backdrop and a Federal Reserve that's being increasingly pressured to respond. Should stocks tank, commodities -- already pumped and primed -- may see a swell of demand that drives prices higher. The easiest way to plug into this dynamic is with a simple pick like the SPDR Gold Trust.\n4. Mostly, I'm doing nothing\nFinally, and perhaps most importantly, I'm doing nothing about a possible market correction.\nYou read that right.\nThere are two schools of thought behind the decision to do nothing rather than trying to evade the impact of a correction. The first of these is the simple fact that most of my holdings really are long-haul positions I had (and have) every intention of hanging onto through bear markets. One of the greatest upsides of a legitimate buy-and-hold approach is that you don't even have to worry about temporary headwinds.\nThe other idea at work here is the fact that guessing the market's next near-term reversal is just darn difficult to do ... so much so that most people don't do it very well. Indeed, the effort to time the stock market's peaks and valleys often does more harm than good, by virtue of getting you out too soon or too late, or getting you back in too soon or too late. The market's going to do what the market's going to do in its own time, and it's not going to telegraph what's around the corner to anyone. The best way to win that game is by not playing it at all.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":217,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":178798362,"gmtCreate":1626835679356,"gmtModify":1631892332062,"author":{"id":"4088378716140630","authorId":"4088378716140630","name":"6fea9d41","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088378716140630","authorIdStr":"4088378716140630"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[强] ","listText":"[强] ","text":"[强]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/178798362","repostId":"2153924256","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2153924256","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1626812915,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2153924256?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-21 04:28","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street bounces back on renewed economic optimism","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2153924256","media":"Reuters","summary":"NEW YORK, July 20 (Reuters) - Wall Street ended sharply higher on Tuesday, rebounding from a multi-d","content":"
NEW YORK, July 20 (Reuters) - Wall Street ended sharply higher on Tuesday, rebounding from a multi-day losing streak as a string of upbeat earnings reports and revived economic optimism fueled a risk-on rally.
\n
All three major U.S. stock indexes gained more than 1% with the blue-chip Dow, on the heels of its worst day in nine months, leading the charge.
\n
The S&P notched its first advance in four days as well as registering its strongest day since March. And that m","content":"
The stock market shrugged off rising Covid-19 infections due to the Delta variant Monday. And that makes sense: Despite Covid issues, investors are feeling a little better about the outlook for corporate earnings and the U.S. economy in the second half of 2021.
\n
Judging by the headlines, the Delta variant of the Covid-19 virus is poised to derail the second half of 2021. Cases are soaring once again, and concerns about breakthrough cases are making headlines everywhere—a study of cases in the county containing Cape Cod showed that 74% were in people who’d been vaccinated—as states reconsider their masking and back-to-school policies.
\n
But the market might have already responded to the fears: OnJuly 19, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 2.1%, its worst day since October, while the S&P 500 dropped 1.6%.
\n
Back then, the seven-day average of new cases in the U.S. sat at about 35,000, up almost 50% over the seven-day average from a week before. Worldwide, the seven-day average on July 19 was about 521,000 new cases, up 17% from the prior week.
\n
But the market recovered even as infection rates got worse. The S&P 500 hit a new 52-week high on July 29, despite no abatement in Covid-19 data, but slipped 0.2% on Monday. TheDow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.3%, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.1%.
\n
Coming into Monday, the seven-day average of new Covid cases in America is about 80,000 now, up 129% since the seven-day period ending July 19. S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures, however, are up about 0.5% and 0.4%, respectively. The takeaway: Investors don’t seem to care about Covid anymore.
\n
That might seem strange but makes some sense. First, investors might be viewing the recent surge as a U.S.-only problem. The worldwide seven-day average of new Covid cases is about 596,000, up 15% from the seven-day period ending July 19. That’s a better comparison than the up 129% figure for the U.S. And excluding American figures, the worldwide seven-day average is about 517,000 a day, up 6% from the level on July 19.
\n
Investors might also be more optimistic because widespread lockdowns don’t look likely. Even if indoor masking comes back for fully vaccinated people, Dr. Anthony Fauci said over the weekend he did not think the U.S. would lockdown again.
\n
And Thomas Lee of FundStrat pointed out in a Monday email to clients that new hospitalization rates are slowing. That’s another positive that investors can point to.
\n
Whether it stays that way remains to be seen.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why the Stock Market Doesn’t Seem to Care About the Latest Surge in Covid Cases
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy the Stock Market Doesn’t Seem to Care About the Latest Surge in Covid Cases\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-08-03 10:40 GMT+8 Barrons\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The stock market shrugged off rising Covid-19 infections due to the Delta variant Monday. Blue Origin's New Shepard is a small, suborbital rocket that takes off vertically from a launch pad, giving a shorter yet higher-speed experience than the aerial-launched space plane created by Branson's Virgin Galactic. But much like Virgin Galactic's plane, New Shepard is designed to shuttle paying customers more than dozens of miles above the Earth's surface for a few moments of weightlessness and panoramic views of the Earth.
\n
New Shepard has flown 15 automated test flights with no people on board, and Bezos announced in early June that he intended to be on the first-ever crewed flight, which is slated for July 20.
\n
The public will be able to watch the whole thing go down on Blue Origin's livestream, where it will show exterior shots of the rocket and capsule shooting up toward the cosmos. (Shots of the interior — and Bezos' facial expressions — won't be released until after the flight.) The missions is expected to kick off Tuesday after 8 am ET, weather permitting.
\n
Here's everything you need to know before the big event.
\n
Who's going?
\n
Though the New Shepard capsule can carry up to six people, Bezos is bringing just three others along on this inaugural journey. They include his brother, Mark Bezos; Wally Funk, an 82-year-old pilot and one of the \"Mercury 13\" women; and an 18-year old recent high school graduate named Oliver Daemen.
\n
Bezos was supposed to fly alongside a mystery bidder who won a recent Blue Origin auction by agreeing to pay $28 million for a seat on the flight, but the company announced Thursday that the person, who asked to remain anonymous for the time being, had to bow out because of \"scheduling conflicts.\" Daemen — whose father, Dutch investment firm founder Joes Daemen, paid for his ticket — will fly in the auction winner's place.
\n
What will happen?
\n
When most people think about spaceflight, they think about an astronaut circling the Earth, floating in space, for at least a few days.
\n
That is not what the Bezos brothers and their fellow passengers will be doing.
\n
They'll be going up and coming right back down, and they'll be doing it in less time, about 11 minutes, than it takes most people to get to work.
\n
Visually, Blue Origin's livestream will look much the same as most of the New Shepard test launches of years past have looked: The rocket and capsule will be sitting on a launch pad at Blue Origin's private facilities in rural Texas — near Van Horn, which is about 120 miles east of El Paso.
\n
New Shepard'ssuborbital fightshit about three times the speed of sound — roughly 2,300 miles per hour — and fly directly upward until the rocket expends most of its fuel. The crew capsule will then separate from the rocket at the top of the trajectory and briefly continue upward before the capsule almost hovers at the top of its flight path, giving the passengers a few minutes of weightlessness. It works sort of like an extended version of the weightlessness you experience when you reach the peak of a roller coaster hill, just before gravity brings your cart — or, in Bezos' case, your space capsule -- screaming back down toward the ground.
\n
A graphic that shows the flight profile of Blue Origin's New Shepard.
\n
The New Shepard capsule then deploys a large plume of parachutes to slow its descent to less than 20 miles per hour before it hits the ground, and Bezos and his fellow passengers will be further cushioned by shock-absorbent seats.
\n
The rocket, flying separately after having detached from the human-carrying capsule, will then re-ignite its engines and use its on-board computers to execute a pinpoint, upright landing. The booster landing looks similar to what SpaceX does with its Falcon 9 rockets, though those rockets are far more powerful than New Shepard and — yes — more prone to exploding on impact.
\n
A smattering of media will also be allowed in to watch the launch and interview Bezos and the other passengers after landing. CNN Business reporters will be on the ground during the flight and will post live updates on our site.
\n
How is this different from what SpaceX and Virgin Galactic do?
\n
Bezos' flight will come just nine days after British billionaire Richard Branson took his own supersonic joy ride to the edge of space, the result of a surprise announcement that came from his space company, Virgin Galactic, days after Bezos announced his intention to go to space.
\n
The two men's companies — and their PR machines — have since entered into a public back-and-forth, though the billionaires themselves have said they're not interested in racing to become the first to actually rocket into space aboard a craft they helped fund.
\n
But suborbital space tourism isn't all that Branson and Bezos are pursuing with their space ventures. Nor is it the largest or most important sector in the burgeoning commercial space industry.
\n
Branson, Musk and Bezos, however, have all been compared for years because of their similarities — all three men used fortune they accrued through other lines of business to pursue space-focused ventures. Here's how they break down:
\n
Elon Musk's SpaceX has for years been making headlines and breaking records with its rocket technology — and it is far different than what Blue Origin will debut on Tuesday.
\n
First off, SpaceX builds orbital rockets. Orbital rockets need to drum up enough power to hit at least 17,000 miles per hour, or what's known as orbital velocity, essentially giving a spacecraft enough energy to continue whipping around the Earth rather than being dragged immediately back down by gravity. That's how SpaceX is able to put satellites into orbit or carry astronauts to and from the International Space Station.
\n
Suborbital flights, however, don't need to travel nearly as fast. They need only reach an altitude above the 50 miles mark — which the US government considers to mark the edge of outer space — or the 62-mile mark, which is internationally considered the demarcating line. (New Shepard is expected to reach over 62 miles.)
\n
What New Shepard will do on Tuesday will more closely resemble what Richard Branson — the other, other space billionaire — is planning to do with his company, Virgin Galactic.
\n
Virgin Galactic is also planning to launch wealthy tourists to suborbital space, though it developed a much different vehicle to get there. Rather than an autonomous rocket that takes off vertically, Virgin Galactic has built a piloted space plane that takes off from a runway (much like an airplane) attached to a massive winged mothership.
\n
Virgin Galactic has completed test flights of its own, and Branson became the first billionaire to fly to space aboard a rocket he helped fund on July 11.
\n
How risky is this?
\n
Space travel is, historically, fraught with danger. Though the risks are not necessarily astronomical for Bezos' jaunt to suborbital space, as his space company Blue Origin has spent the better part of the last decade running New Shepard through a series of successful test flights.
\n
Suborbital flights also require far less power and speed than orbital rockets. Blue Origin's New Shepard is a small, suborbital rocket that takes off vertically from a launch pad, giving a shorter yet higher-speed experience than the aerial-launched space plane created by Branson's Virgin Galactic. But much like Virgin Galactic's plane, New Shepard is designed to shuttle paying customers more than dozens of miles above the Earth's surface for a few moments of weightlessness and panoramic views of the Earth.\nNew Shepard has flown 15 automated test flights with no people on board, and Bezos announced in early June that he intended to be on the first-ever crewed flight, which is slated for July 20.\nThe public will be able to watch the whole thing go down on Blue Origin's livestream, where it will show exterior shots of the rocket and capsule shooting up toward the cosmos. (Shots of the interior — and Bezos' facial expressions — won't be released until after the flight.) The missions is expected to kick off Tuesday after 8 am ET, weather permitting.\nHere's everything you need to know before the big event.\nWho's going?\nThough the New Shepard capsule can carry up to six people, Bezos is bringing just three others along on this inaugural journey. They include his brother, Mark Bezos; Wally Funk, an 82-year-old pilot and one of the \"Mercury 13\" women; and an 18-year old recent high school graduate named Oliver Daemen.\nBezos was supposed to fly alongside a mystery bidder who won a recent Blue Origin auction by agreeing to pay $28 million for a seat on the flight, but the company announced Thursday that the person, who asked to remain anonymous for the time being, had to bow out because of \"scheduling conflicts.\" Daemen — whose father, Dutch investment firm founder Joes Daemen, paid for his ticket — will fly in the auction winner's place.\nWhat will happen?\nWhen most people think about spaceflight, they think about an astronaut circling the Earth, floating in space, for at least a few days.\nThat is not what the Bezos brothers and their fellow passengers will be doing.\nThey'll be going up and coming right back down, and they'll be doing it in less time, about 11 minutes, than it takes most people to get to work.\nVisually, Blue Origin's livestream will look much the same as most of the New Shepard test launches of years past have looked: The rocket and capsule will be sitting on a launch pad at Blue Origin's private facilities in rural Texas — near Van Horn, which is about 120 miles east of El Paso.\nNew Shepard'ssuborbital fightshit about three times the speed of sound — roughly 2,300 miles per hour — and fly directly upward until the rocket expends most of its fuel. The crew capsule will then separate from the rocket at the top of the trajectory and briefly continue upward before the capsule almost hovers at the top of its flight path, giving the passengers a few minutes of weightlessness. It works sort of like an extended version of the weightlessness you experience when you reach the peak of a roller coaster hill, just before gravity brings your cart — or, in Bezos' case, your space capsule -- screaming back down toward the ground.\nA graphic that shows the flight profile of Blue Origin's New Shepard.\nThe New Shepard capsule then deploys a large plume of parachutes to slow its descent to less than 20 miles per hour before it hits the ground, and Bezos and his fellow passengers will be further cushioned by shock-absorbent seats.\nThe rocket, flying separately after having detached from the human-carrying capsule, will then re-ignite its engines and use its on-board computers to execute a pinpoint, upright landing. The booster landing looks similar to what SpaceX does with its Falcon 9 rockets, though those rockets are far more powerful than New Shepard and — yes — more prone to exploding on impact.\nA smattering of media will also be allowed in to watch the launch and interview Bezos and the other passengers after landing. CNN Business reporters will be on the ground during the flight and will post live updates on our site.\nHow is this different from what SpaceX and Virgin Galactic do?\nBezos' flight will come just nine days after British billionaire Richard Branson took his own supersonic joy ride to the edge of space, the result of a surprise announcement that came from his space company, Virgin Galactic, days after Bezos announced his intention to go to space.\nThe two men's companies — and their PR machines — have since entered into a public back-and-forth, though the billionaires themselves have said they're not interested in racing to become the first to actually rocket into space aboard a craft they helped fund.\nBut suborbital space tourism isn't all that Branson and Bezos are pursuing with their space ventures. Nor is it the largest or most important sector in the burgeoning commercial space industry.\nBranson, Musk and Bezos, however, have all been compared for years because of their similarities — all three men used fortune they accrued through other lines of business to pursue space-focused ventures. Here's how they break down:\nElon Musk's SpaceX has for years been making headlines and breaking records with its rocket technology — and it is far different than what Blue Origin will debut on Tuesday.\nFirst off, SpaceX builds orbital rockets. Orbital rockets need to drum up enough power to hit at least 17,000 miles per hour, or what's known as orbital velocity, essentially giving a spacecraft enough energy to continue whipping around the Earth rather than being dragged immediately back down by gravity. That's how SpaceX is able to put satellites into orbit or carry astronauts to and from the International Space Station.\nSuborbital flights, however, don't need to travel nearly as fast. They need only reach an altitude above the 50 miles mark — which the US government considers to mark the edge of outer space — or the 62-mile mark, which is internationally considered the demarcating line. (New Shepard is expected to reach over 62 miles.)\nWhat New Shepard will do on Tuesday will more closely resemble what Richard Branson — the other, other space billionaire — is planning to do with his company, Virgin Galactic.\nVirgin Galactic is also planning to launch wealthy tourists to suborbital space, though it developed a much different vehicle to get there. Rather than an autonomous rocket that takes off vertically, Virgin Galactic has built a piloted space plane that takes off from a runway (much like an airplane) attached to a massive winged mothership.\nVirgin Galactic has completed test flights of its own, and Branson became the first billionaire to fly to space aboard a rocket he helped fund on July 11.\nHow risky is this?\nSpace travel is, historically, fraught with danger. Though the risks are not necessarily astronomical for Bezos' jaunt to suborbital space, as his space company Blue Origin has spent the better part of the last decade running New Shepard through a series of successful test flights.\nSuborbital flights also require far less power and speed than orbital rockets. That means less time the rocket is required to burn, lower temperatures scorching the outside of the spacecraft, less force and compression ripping at the spacecraft, and generally fewer opportunities for something to go very wrong.\nStill, any time a human straps themselves into a rocket, there are risks involved — and Bezos has apparently calculated that, for him, it's worth it.\n\"Ever since I was five years old, I've dreamed of traveling to space,\" Bezos wrote in his June announcement on Instagram.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":155,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":696439617,"gmtCreate":1640744368537,"gmtModify":1640744368607,"author":{"id":"4088378716140630","authorId":"4088378716140630","name":"6fea9d41","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088378716140630","authorIdStr":"4088378716140630"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","listText":"[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","text":"[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] [Miser]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/696439617","repostId":"698794374","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":698794374,"gmtCreate":1640529578623,"gmtModify":1640547511148,"author":{"id":"3573162818118967","authorId":"3573162818118967","name":"Pepeflabs","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb2ce4a85b6af8ab6f45834a991797c6","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573162818118967","authorIdStr":"3573162818118967"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Apple(AAPL)$gogogo","listText":"$Apple(AAPL)$gogogo","text":"$Apple(AAPL)$gogogo","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f2f4f0d95f0e3e9f4ffd9b42c3b7d502","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":2,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/698794374","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":0,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":590,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":869024277,"gmtCreate":1632230850299,"gmtModify":1632801928013,"author":{"id":"4088378716140630","authorId":"4088378716140630","name":"6fea9d41","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088378716140630","authorIdStr":"4088378716140630"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$HAIDILAO(06862)$hmmm","listText":"$HAIDILAO(06862)$hmmm","text":"$HAIDILAO(06862)$hmmm","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/da13d1a8c4893319755aafb9fb25a08b","width":"1080","height":"1923"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/869024277","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":222,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":869024133,"gmtCreate":1632230821422,"gmtModify":1632801928260,"author":{"id":"4088378716140630","authorId":"4088378716140630","name":"6fea9d41","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088378716140630","authorIdStr":"4088378716140630"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[难过] ","listText":"[难过] ","text":"[难过]","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d99c8d36ae2825c217e883b164b753c0","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/869024133","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":682,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
