More than 18 million sellers have migrated over to managed payments.\nThe managed-payments efforts helped drive the sixth-straight quarter of double-digit growth in transaction revenue and eBay expects to complete the transition by the end of the year.\n\"We're just getting started in terms of the opportunity of what we can do with commerce and payments together in a single flow and single experience,\" Chief Executive Jamie Iannone said on the earnings call.\nEBay's Promoted Listings offering generated $207 million in revenue during the period, up 12% from a year earlier and up 9% when excluding currency impacts.\n\"We continue to purposely reduce third-party advertising in favor of Promoted Listings, which delivers superior performance and offer a better experience for both sellers and buyers,\" Chief Financial Officer Stephen Priest said on the call.\nFor the fourth quarter, eBay expects $2.57 billion to $2.62 billion in revenue and 97 cents to $1.01 in adjusted earnings per share. The FactSet consensus calls for $2.65 billion in revenue and $1.00 in adjusted EPS.\nShares of eBay have risen 7.4% over the past three months as the S&P 500 has gained 3.4%.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":813,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":855656311,"gmtCreate":1635374988525,"gmtModify":1635377463277,"author":{"id":"4088198493008700","authorId":"4088198493008700","name":"Thomas8855","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/67cc46e177356572799c4398ddd7b94e","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088198493008700","authorIdStr":"4088198493008700"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yes","listText":"Yes","text":"Yes","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/855656311","repostId":"855838391","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":855838391,"gmtCreate":1635347938580,"gmtModify":1635505417556,"author":{"id":"3578615300523341","authorId":"3578615300523341","name":"Julia要早日暴富","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/13aadc40494597f186fe451005ef26a6","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578615300523341","authorIdStr":"3578615300523341"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Skillz Inc(SKLZ)$看好这个美国游戏平台!","listText":"$Skillz Inc(SKLZ)$看好这个美国游戏平台!","text":"$Skillz Inc(SKLZ)$看好这个美国游戏平台!","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4fa2d58e74c30109dcf3ec349acbff17","width":"960","height":"1839"}],"top":1,"highlighted":2,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/855838391","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":0,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1001,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":883122017,"gmtCreate":1631228668739,"gmtModify":1631884398711,"author":{"id":"4088198493008700","authorId":"4088198493008700","name":"Thomas8855","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/67cc46e177356572799c4398ddd7b94e","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088198493008700","authorIdStr":"4088198493008700"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$AMC Entertainment(AMC)$Yes","listText":"$AMC Entertainment(AMC)$Yes","text":"$AMC Entertainment(AMC)$Yes","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/883122017","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":515,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":814448622,"gmtCreate":1630882002766,"gmtModify":1631885193318,"author":{"id":"4088198493008700","authorId":"4088198493008700","name":"Thomas8855","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/67cc46e177356572799c4398ddd7b94e","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088198493008700","authorIdStr":"4088198493008700"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Gogo","listText":"Gogo","text":"Gogo","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/814448622","repostId":"2164877371","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2164877371","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Dow Jones publishes the world’s most trusted business news and financial information in a variety of media.","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Dow Jones","id":"106","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/150f88aa4d182df19190059f4a365e99"},"pubTimestamp":1630678740,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2164877371?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-09-03 22:19","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Sphere 3D stock pulls back sharply after share, warrant offering","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2164877371","media":"Dow Jones","summary":"MW Sphere 3D stock pulls back sharply after share, warrant offering\nShares of Sphere 3D Corp. tumble","content":"
MW Sphere 3D stock pulls back sharply after share, warrant offering
\n
Shares of Sphere 3D Corp. tumbled 26.6% on heavy volume of 35.4 million shares in morning trading Friday, to pull back from a 3 1/2-year high, after the computing, storage and networking technologies company announced the pricing of a $192.1 million direct offering of common stock and warrants. and immersive experiences, where people can simultaneously attend concerts, school or meetings.
\n
A new tech-industry battle is taking shape over the “metaverse” as companies such as Facebook Inc. and Roblox Corp. work to shape a virtual realm that most consumers don’t yet know exists.
\n
The metaverse concept, rooted in science-fiction novels such as “Snow Crash” and “Ready Player One,” encompasses an extensive online world transcending individual tech platforms, where people exist in immersive, shared virtual spaces. Through avatars, people would be able to try on items available in stores or attend concerts with friends, just as they would offline.
\n
Enthusiasm for the concept has also helped supercharge valuations of companies such as Roblox—which went public in a direct listing in March—and “Fortnite” maker Epic Games Inc. as investors bet the popular videogame worlds will have an early foothold in the nascent online space.
\n
Other major companies are also expressing interest: Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg,Microsoft Corp.’s Satya Nadella and Match GroupInc.’s Shar Dubey are among chief executive officers who have talked recently about ways their companies are looking to participate in building or supporting elements of shared virtual worlds. But analysts say that one of the biggest challenges is turning that engagement into profits, even as more people embrace the concept.
\n
Roblox CEO Dave Baszucki said Tuesday that the company sees its 15-year-old platform as a hub for virtual and immersive experiences where thousands of people can simultaneously attend concerts, school or staff meetings. Through avatars, people would be able to try on items available in stores or attend concerts with friends, just as they would offline.\nEnthusiasm for the concept has also helped supercharge valuations of companies such as Roblox—which went public in a direct listing in March—and “Fortnite” maker Epic Games Inc. as investors bet the popular videogame worlds will have an early foothold in the nascent online space.\nOther major companies are also expressing interest: Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg,Microsoft Corp.’s Satya Nadella and Match GroupInc.’s Shar Dubey are among chief executive officers who have talked recently about ways their companies are looking to participate in building or supporting elements of shared virtual worlds. But analysts say that one of the biggest challenges is turning that engagement into profits, even as more people embrace the concept.\nRoblox CEO Dave Baszucki said Tuesday that the company sees its 15-year-old platform as a hub for virtual and immersive experiences where thousands of people can simultaneously attend concerts, school or staff meetings. He said the company has been investing heavily in technology and growing its workforce to support these experiences, but also in areas such as content moderation.\n“It must be a civil and safe platform that welcomes 6-year-olds and at the same time welcomes 30-year-olds who are working together,” Mr. Baszucki told analysts Tuesday on an earnings call when asked about the interest companies such as Facebook are taking in the metaverse.\n\n ‘It’s very clear that this is becoming a focal battleground for big tech.’\n\n\n — Matthew Ball, venture capitalist and former media executive\n\nRoblox more than doubled its second-quarter revenue from a year earlier to $454.1 million—helped by growth in its user base—but posted steeper losses as it recorded higher costs including those tied to fees paid to developers, research and development and its technology infrastructure.\nMuch of how people will connect to the metaverse is unclear, including how different companies’ virtual realms or platforms will interact. today is truly capable of that and its common usage is becoming misleading for consumers.
\n
Li Xiang’s comments, on his WeChat account Monday, come days after a fatal accident involving an electric car from rival Nio Inc.The 31-year-old driver of that vehicle had Nio’s navigation-on-pilot function activated and was killed when his car rear-ended another on a highway.
\n
That and similar accidents in China have raised consumer concerns over the safety of electric cars, which tend to have more advanced driving technology and intelligent features than traditional cars. Some people say the way the vehicles are being advertised, including describing driver-assistance functions as autonomous driving, is potentially dangerous.
\n
“The terms ‘autonomous’ and ‘assistance’ are conflicting each other in describing one single status,” Li said. Drivers are still ultimately responsible for their own safety even when using assisted-driving functions, he said.
\n
It’s an issue that’s sparked debate outside of China as well. But what would you say if you were offered an exchange traded fund that takes less risk than the S&P 500 but has outperformed it? \n
\n
\n The First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF $(RDVY)$ holds 50 stocks -- it is equally weighted, with the portfolio reconstituted annually and rebalanced each quarter. \n
\n
\n Here's how it has performed over the past five years against the SPDR S&P 500 ETF $(SPY.AU)$, which tracks the benchmark S&P 500 , and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF $(VTI.AU)$, which has also beaten the S&P 500: \n
\n
\n The First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF is rated five stars (the highest) by Morningstar and has $5.1 billion in assets under management. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF has about $386 billion in assets, and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF has about $264 billion. \n
\n
\n When the First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF reconstitutes its portfolio each March, it begins with the 1,000 largest U.S.-listed companies (excluding real estate investment trusts), with average trading volume of at least 5 million shares over the previous three months. \n
\n
\n Companies eligible to be held by the fund must meet these criteria: \n
\n
\n The companies are then ranked by a combination of dividend increases over the previous five years, current payout ratio and current dividend yield. The 50 with the best scores make up the portfolio, restricting any one sector to 30% of the weighting. \n
\n
\n This approach of selecting \"quality\" dividend growers is far less concentrated than the S&P 500 because of the equal weighting. Most broad indexes are weighted by market capitalization. This means the five largest companies in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (Apple Inc. $(AAPL)$, Microsoft Corp. $(MSFT)$, Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$, Facebook Inc. (FB) and both share classes of Alphabet Inc. $(GOOGL)$(GOOGL)) make up 22% of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF. Among those five, Apple and Microsoft are held by the First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF. \n
\n
\n Digging into the portfolio \n
\n
\n Among the 50 stocks held by the First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF, 24 have current dividend yields higher than 2.00%, which compares to a weighted aggregate dividend yield of 1.35% for the S&P 500, according to FactSet. That said, the focus for the ETF isn't dividend income, it is long-term growth -- the ETF itself pays a small quarterly dividend, for a yield of less than 1%. \n
\n
\n An important factor in the ETF's stock selection is five-year growth of quality dividends -- those well-covered by cash flow. This points to something that may fascinate long-term investors: The correlation with a growing dividend and long-term performance. If you hold a group of individual stocks that fit the bill, you can even build a solid dividend income stream years down the line, while also going for growth. \n
\n
\n Here's a screen of the 50 stocks held by the First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF, highlighting growth of dividends and rising dividend yields. \n
\n
\n Starting with the 50 stocks held by the fund, here are the 24 that had dividend yields of at least 2.00% five years ago. But what would you say if you were offered an exchange traded fund that takes less risk than the S&P 500 but has outperformed it? \n\n\n The First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF $(RDVY)$ holds 50 stocks -- it is equally weighted, with the portfolio reconstituted annually and rebalanced each quarter. \n\n\n Here's how it has performed over the past five years against the SPDR S&P 500 ETF $(SPY.AU)$, which tracks the benchmark S&P 500 , and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF $(VTI.AU)$, which has also beaten the S&P 500: \n\n\n The First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF is rated five stars (the highest) by Morningstar and has $5.1 billion in assets under management. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF has about $386 billion in assets, and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF has about $264 billion. \n\n\n When the First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF reconstitutes its portfolio each March, it begins with the 1,000 largest U.S.-listed companies (excluding real estate investment trusts), with average trading volume of at least 5 million shares over the previous three months. \n\n\n Companies eligible to be held by the fund must meet these criteria: \n\n\n The companies are then ranked by a combination of dividend increases over the previous five years, current payout ratio and current dividend yield. The 50 with the best scores make up the portfolio, restricting any one sector to 30% of the weighting. \n\n\n This approach of selecting \"quality\" dividend growers is far less concentrated than the S&P 500 because of the equal weighting. \n\n\n Digging into the portfolio \n\n\n Among the 50 stocks held by the First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF, 24 have current dividend yields higher than 2.00%, which compares to a weighted aggregate dividend yield of 1.35% for the S&P 500, according to FactSet. That said, the focus for the ETF isn't dividend income, it is long-term growth -- the ETF itself pays a small quarterly dividend, for a yield of less than 1%. \n\n\n An important factor in the ETF's stock selection is five-year growth of quality dividends -- those well-covered by cash flow. This points to something that may fascinate long-term investors: The correlation with a growing dividend and long-term performance. If you hold a group of individual stocks that fit the bill, you can even build a solid dividend income stream years down the line, while also going for growth. \n\n\n Here's a screen of the 50 stocks held by the First Trust Rising Dividend Achievers ETF, highlighting growth of dividends and rising dividend yields. \n\n\n Starting with the 50 stocks held by the fund, here are the 24 that had dividend yields of at least 2.00% five years ago. The list is sorted by the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for dividends over the past five years. It also shows the higher yield for an investor who bought those shares five years ago, based on the price they paid then: \n\nCompanyFive-year dividend CAGRDividend yield on shares purchased five years agoDividend yield -- five years agoCurrent dividend yield for a new investorPrice change -- 5 yearsTotal Return -- 5 Years Morgan Stanley MS28.5%9.60%2.74%2.68%259%305% $Bank of America Corp(BAC-N)$. Fool","summary":"The theater chain's recently ended quarter serves up the expected glimmer of a recovery, but things are still nowhere near normal.","content":"
The good news is movie theater chain AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC) topped last quarter's revenue and earnings estimates. The bad news is it's still deep in the red, and only selling a fraction of the number of tickets it was selling before the pandemic took hold.
\n
None of this is terribly shocking, of course. A year earlier, the world was largely shut down due to COVID-19. Though the contagion is still with us, consumers and businesses alike are coping. Theaters in the U.S. were mostly reopened by March -- before AMC's second quarter began -- and studios were at least willing to give theaters a try. Universal's Fast and Furious series entry F9 debuted in June, catching the tail end of the quarter in question. A Quiet Place, Part II, and Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard were also released in May and June, respectively. Godzilla vs. Kong was in theaters back in April. They weren't necessarily must-sees, but for newly vaccinated movie-goers ready to get out and do something close to normal again, they were something.
\n
As it turns out, though, they were still very little. AMC has miles to go before nearing the sort of business it was doing before the coronavirus rattled the world.
\n
\n
A still-ugly picture
\n
The image below speaks volumes, plotting the number of movie tickets AMC sold every quarter through the quarter ending in June. Also plotted are the company's historical quarterly revenue, adjusted EBITDA, and operating profit (or loss), which is a function of those ticket sales. As the saying goes, read 'em and weep.
\n
Data source: AMC Entertainment Holdings. Chart by author. Fiscal data is in millions. Ticket data is in thousands.
\n
Last quarter's 22.1 million tickets sold is around a fourth of the company's usual quarterly ticket sales, around 90 million. Q2's revenue of $444.7 million is roughly a third of the normal figure of $1.3 billion. The most recent results are clearly better than the non-existent numbers being produced a year ago, but still, we're miles away from the pre-pandemic norm. The company's also still deep in the red, reporting an operating loss of $296.6 million and negative adjusted EBITDA of $150.8 million.
\n
Neither the numbers nor the trend should be surprising, even if analysts and investors alike could only make broad guesses given that the turnaround remains a work in progress. Any revenue and earnings estimate that's even close to the actual reported figure is impressive in light of the circumstances.
\n
The earnings beat itself, however, has largely obscured more important matters and left important questions unanswered. Chief among these questions is, how much longer will it take the entire movie industry to crawl all the way out of the hole it's still clearly in?
\n
From sizzle to fizzle
\n
The release of F9 in June drew patrons back to theaters, to be sure. Box Office Mojo reports domestic ticket sales of nearly $99 million for that late-June weekend, which was the best weekend the business had seen since February of last year. Walt Disney's (NYSE:DIS) Black Widow led an even better weekend in early July, leading to $117 million worth of ticket sales in the U.S.
\n
Data source: Box Office Mojo. Chart by author.
\n
Things have clearly cooled off in the meantime, however, despite reasonably splashy titles like Jungle Cruise, Space Jam: A New Legacy, and The Suicide Squad being in theaters. Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard and A Quiet Place, Part II are also still in theaters, offering at least something theatrical to a wide audience. Consumers just aren't as stoked about going to the movies as they were a month ago.
\n
Can AMC explain these gloomy trends with the resurgence of COVID-19 via the delta variant? Sure, that's a headwind that can't be ignored. Something else that can't be ignored, however, is the fact that Jungle Cruise, The Suicide Squad, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Black Widow, and F9 can all be streamed at home.
\n
Bottom line
\n
This isn't a forecast for a complete collapse of AMC. One way or another, the theater chain will carry on. It may require some sort of reorganization or debt restructuring, but the name will survive.
\n
The return to normalcy (or profitability) is at least several quarters away, though, and that could be a few rough quarters. The bad news is it's still deep in the red, and only selling a fraction of the number of tickets it was selling before the pandemic took hold.\nNone of this is terribly shocking, of course. They weren't necessarily must-sees, but for newly vaccinated movie-goers ready to get out and do something close to normal again, they were something.\nAs it turns out, though, they were still very little. AMC has miles to go before nearing the sort of business it was doing before the coronavirus rattled the world.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nA still-ugly picture\nThe image below speaks volumes, plotting the number of movie tickets AMC sold every quarter through the quarter ending in June. Also plotted are the company's historical quarterly revenue, adjusted EBITDA, and operating profit (or loss), which is a function of those ticket sales. As the saying goes, read 'em and weep.\nData source: AMC Entertainment Holdings. Chart by author. Fiscal data is in millions. Ticket data is in thousands.\nLast quarter's 22.1 million tickets sold is around a fourth of the company's usual quarterly ticket sales, around 90 million. Q2's revenue of $444.7 million is roughly a third of the normal figure of $1.3 billion. The most recent results are clearly better than the non-existent numbers being produced a year ago, but still, we're miles away from the pre-pandemic norm. The company's also still deep in the red, reporting an operating loss of $296.6 million and negative adjusted EBITDA of $150.8 million.\nNeither the numbers nor the trend should be surprising, even if analysts and investors alike could only make broad guesses given that the turnaround remains a work in progress. Any revenue and earnings estimate that's even close to the actual reported figure is impressive in light of the circumstances.\nThe earnings beat itself, however, has largely obscured more important matters and left important questions unanswered. Chief among these questions is, how much longer will it take the entire movie industry to crawl all the way out of the hole it's still clearly in?\nFrom sizzle to fizzle\nThe release of F9 in June drew patrons back to theaters, to be sure. Box Office Mojo reports domestic ticket sales of nearly $99 million for that late-June weekend, which was the best weekend the business had seen since February of last year. Walt Disney's (NYSE:DIS) Black Widow led an even better weekend in early July, leading to $117 million worth of ticket sales in the U.S.\nData source: Box Office Mojo. Chart by author.\nThings have clearly cooled off in the meantime, however, despite reasonably splashy titles like Jungle Cruise, Space Jam: A New Legacy, and The Suicide Squad being in theaters. Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard and A Quiet Place, Part II are also still in theaters, offering at least something theatrical to a wide audience. Consumers just aren't as stoked about going to the movies as they were a month ago.\nCan AMC explain these gloomy trends with the resurgence of COVID-19 via the delta variant? Sure, that's a headwind that can't be ignored. Something else that can't be ignored, however, is the fact that Jungle Cruise, The Suicide Squad, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Black Widow, and F9 can all be streamed at home.\nBottom line\nThis isn't a forecast for a complete collapse of AMC. One way or another, the theater chain will carry on. It may require some sort of reorganization or debt restructuring, but the name will survive.\nThe return to normalcy (or profitability) is at least several quarters away, though, and that could be a few rough quarters. In the meantime, this company has to justify an $18.5 billion market cap, never having produced more than a billion dollars' worth of EBITDA in any four-quarter stretch and never having turned an annualized operating profit of more than $265 million in any four-quarter span -- even in its 2018 heyday.\nAt the very least, AMC investors should exercise caution. These investors should also start asking exactly how AMC is going to convince a bunch of consumers to fall out of love with streaming new releases at home. MAJA HITIJ/GETTY IMAGES\nTesla Inc. set its shareholder meeting for Oct. 7 at the Fremont, Calif., factory, with a call for reducing its directors’ terms among the proposals the electric-car maker will bring to the table, the company said in filing late Friday.\nOne of the proposals calls for each director’s term to be reduced from three years to two years. Tesla’s board currently has nine members who are divided into three classes in staggered three-year terms.\nIf the proposal is approved, however, the board will be divided into two classes with staggered two-year terms, with directors distributed as equally between the classes as possible, Tesla said in the filing.\nThe board would be reduced to eight members, since Antonio Gracias, a venture capitalist who has served on the Tesla board since 2007, said in 2019 he’d not be seeking reelection when his term ends this year.\nTesla’s board nominated current board members James Murdoch, the youngest son of News Corp founder Rupert Murdoch, and Kimbal Musk, Chief Executive Elon Musk’s brother, for re-election as class II directors, with terms expiring in 2024. If the term reduction is approved, then their terms would end in 2023, the company said.\nTesla’s curtailing board member terms was a response to a shareholder proposal calling to elect each board member for one year.\nThe two-year term, however, “strikes a suitable balance to the long-term interests of and nearer-term accountability to our stockholders at this time,” Tesla said.\nTesla shares were flat in after-hours trading after ending the regular trading day down 0.7%. And while AMC Entertainment's (NYSE:AMC) shares are still up by over 1,600% year to date, the movie theater operator looks poised for a massive crash because of its deteriorating balance sheet and seismic shifts in the film industry.
\n
1. Streaming is the new normal
\n
According to the Wall Street Journal, AMC's multi-bagger rally was driven by retail speculation and an intentional short squeeze. Fundamentals play a smaller role, but some investors may also be optimistic about the company's ability to bounce back from the coronavirus pandemic now that 56% of Americans above age 12 are vaccinated. AMC has reopened almost all its U.S. locations.
\n
But unfortunately, the new normal isn't looking so normal for AMC.
\n
\n
In July, Disney (NYSE: DIS) released Black Widow, the first Marvel movie to hit theaters since the pandemic. Unlike prior Marvel releases, Disney also made the film available on its streaming platform Disney+ through Premier Access, a service that allows users to rent it for a one-time charge of $30 on top of the service's regular subscription fees.
\n
Black Widow earned $78 million from domestic theaters in its opening weekend compared to at least $60 million from Premier Access.
\n
The film's success on Premier Access is a terrible trend for the traditional U.S. movie theater industry. Unlike theatrical releases, Disney won't have to split ticket sales with the theaters, resulting in higher profits for the House of Mouse. Online releases also boost Disney's competitive moat against streaming rivals like Netflix and could help drive subscriber growth.
\n
It is unclear how long Disney plans to continue its dual-release strategy, but if it becomes permanent (or if other studios follow suit), AMC could become an unnecessary middleman in an industry it once dominated.
\n
2. Massive cash burn and a deteriorating balance sheet
\n
With AMC's future uncertain, investors should pay attention to the company's current performance. That picture isn't pretty. First-quarter revenue tanked 84% to $148 million -- a slight improvement from the fourth quarter (when sales were down 89% against the prior year), but not much evidence of a strong recovery. The company is also burning through cash, reporting negative operating cash flows of $313 million in the period.
\n
With just $813 million in cash and equivalents on its balance sheet, AMC will probably need to tap the debt and equity markets to sustain operations. And with $5.4 billion in corporate borrowings and $4.9 billion in operating lease liabilities (deferred rent for some of its properties), its balance sheet is already in bad shape.
\n
Considering these challenges, AMC has no business trading for a market cap of $19.5 billion, which represents a jaw-dropping 43 times its 12-month revenue. Even if the company recovered to its pre-pandemic sales figure of $5.5 billion (which looks unlikely), that would give the stock a price-to-sales (P/S) multiple of 3.5, which is quite a premium for a company with a busted balance sheet that struggled to earn consistent profits even before the pandemic. (AMC reported a net loss of $149 million in 2019.)
\n
An obsolete company?
\n
The symbiotic relationship between film studios and movie theaters is breaking down. And this could turn AMC Entertainment into an unnecessary intermediary in film distribution. The company's financials are also in shambles, which could mean more debt and equity dilution in the future. AMC's stock shouldn't be trading for such a high valuation in light of these challenges.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
2 Reasons to Sell AMC Stock
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n2 Reasons to Sell AMC Stock\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-29 22:25 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
What goes up must come down -- at least when the rally comes from speculation instead of fundamentals. There are six different versions of the car with different features, and prices range from 160,000 yuan to 230,000 yuan.\nXpeng's P7 sedan starts from 229,900 yuan after subsidies.
