run core parts of its 5G wireless network on Microsoft's cloud computing platform.
\n
The newer generation of networks, which AT&T began rolling out in 2018, is designed to rely more heavily on software and data centers for routing traffic rather than telecommunications specific gear.
\n
Microsoft, which analysts believe to be the second largest cloud computing provider by revenue behind rival Amazon Web Services , has been building out specific cloud computing offering to go after carriers, and AT&T is the Redmond, Washington-based company's first major win.
\n
The two also said that Microsoft will purchase software and intellectual property developed by AT&T to help build out its offerings for carriers. The companies did not disclose the terms of the deals, but said that Microsoft will make job offers to several hundred AT&T engineers.
\n
The deal follows a $2 billion agreement in 2019 in which AT&T said it would start using Microsoft's cloud for software development and other tasks. At that time, AT&T said it would continue to run its core networking functions in its own private data centers.
\n
Andre Fuetsch, AT&T's chief technology officer, said that shifting to a public cloud vendor will let AT&T take advantage of a larger ecosystem of software developers who are working on technologies such as wringing more use out of pricey 5G spectrum or creating new features for users.
\n
\"That's what we at AT&T want to do, and we think working with Microsoft gives us that advantage,\" Fuetsch told Reuters in an interview.
\n
Microsoft intends to use the newly acquired technology - plus the experience gained helping AT&T run the network - to build out a product it calls Azure for Operators, which it will use to go after core network business from telecommunications companies in the 60 regions of the world where it operates.
\n
\"I think we're going have operators around the planet that are quite interested in that,\" Jason Zander, executive vice president of Microsoft Azure, said in an interview.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Microsoft
\n
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) just hit a major milestone, rising above the $2 trillion mark in market capitalization. It became just the second U.S. stock to reach that level.
\n
Microsoft used to split its stock regularly, but its share price got stuck in the doldrums for a long time following the tech bust in the early 2000s. It took Microsoft roughly 15 years to return to all-time highs after the decline, and it wasn't until early 2019 that the share price climbed above the $100 mark for good. Now, the stock fetches about $270 per share.
\n
Historically, Microsoft has tended to do stock splits when its share price moved to between $150 and $200 per share. While many companies have moved away from frequent splits over the past 20 years, it's not surprising to see Microsoft having chosen to wait this time around. However, Microsoft is a Dow component, and its stock price determines its influence in the price-weighted index. With Microsoft having about double the influence of the larger Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), there's definitely some appeal to a 2-for-1 split that would put the two tech giants on more of an even keel within the Dow.
\n
2. Intuitive Surgical
\n
In 2017, robotic surgery company Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ:ISRG) did something that had fallen out of favor when it made its own 3-for-1 stock split. The split didn't entirely lead to a huge run of similar moves from other companies, but it did mark somewhat of a turning point as far as company perception of stock splits was concerned.
\n
Intuitive Surgical came up with a novel reason for its stock split four years ago. In addition to the usual comments about making share prices more affordable for retail investors, the company added that it was useful to be more precise in awarding stock-based compensation to employees. As prices rose, it was harder to dole out stock or options awards effectively. The same might well be happening now, as Intuitive has recovered strongly from weak industry conditions and rewarded long-term investors handsomely.
\n
The last split from Intuitive Surgical came as the stock was approaching the $1,000 mark. With shares now fetching more than $900 per share, the same reasons for splitting appear to apply today.
\n
3. Netflix
\n
Finally, Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) rounds out this list of potential stock split candidates. With a price at around $530 per share, the stock isn't quite at levels that have led to past splits. However, it wouldn't be unreasonable for the streaming video giant to move forward with a split at current prices.
\n
Netflix's most recent stock split came in 2015. The 7-for-1 split came as Netflix had rocketed past the $700 per share mark, and it proved to be one of multiple 7-for-1 splits that seemed to come into vogue in the mid-2010s.
\n
Fundamentally, Netflix's business is strong enough to support another split. Subscriptions soared in 2020, and the company could well be in position to boost its monthly subscription prices once again in the near future. Even with competition getting fierce in streaming video, Netflix has held its own with its wide selection of original and third-party content and its first-mover advantage.
\n
It might take another leg up to motivate Netflix to do a stock split. However, that upward movement could come sooner than many think.
\n
Don't fret about splits
\n
Investors like the short-term bump that often comes when a company announces a stock split. Investors shouldn’t expect much good news,","content":"
Boeing reports second-quarter earnings Wednesday morning. Investors shouldn’t expect much good news, but the results shouldn’t matter too much for the stock.
\n
For the quarter, Wall Street is looking for an 81-cent-per-share loss from $16.5 billion in sales. For the year-ago quarter, Boeing (ticker: BA) reported an adjusted loss of almost $5 a share from $11.8 billion in sales.
\n
Those aren’t great results, but the commercial aerospace giant is still digging out from the dual crises of the 737 MAX and Covid-19. Things are so challenging for the company, it could report almost anything without shocking investors.
\n
“There are enough items that are unknown that something could be unexpected…. More than likely, it will miss,” Edward Jones analyst Jeff Windau tells Barron’s. “Cash burn [will be] in focus.” Wall Street expects Boeing to burn through another $2.8 billion in cash after burning through $3.7 billion in the first quarter.
\n
In the second quarter of 2018, before Covid-19 and the worldwide grounding of the 737 MAX in March 2019 after two deadly crashes within five months, Boeing earned $3.33 a share from $24.3 billion in sales. Free cash flow came in at $4.3 billion. Numbers like that are still far down the road.
\n
Commercial air travel is improving, though. Over the past week, U.S. air travel was down about 21% compared with the same week in 2019. Three months ago, air travel in the U.S. was down about 42% compared with the same week in April 2019.
\n
That improvement won’t be reflected in Boeing numbers. “Boeing’s 2Q deliveries numbers were poor, and it announced another cut to 787 production,” wrote Vertical Research Partners analyst Rob Stallard in a preview report. “This is a setback, with some flow through to key suppliers like [ Sprit AeroSystems ] and [ Hexcel ]. We think Boeing is set to announce another monster 2Q loss.” He projects cash burn of about $2.8 billion, in line with the Wall Street consensus estimate.
\n
Stallard and Windau both rate Boeing shares Hold. Stallard’s price target is $153 a share. Windau doesn’t publish price targets for stocks he covers.
\n
Stallard notes in his report that demand is improving, “particularly for new narrow body aircraft.”
\n
What investors will want to hear about is a new plane to be developed by Boeing. CEO Dave Calhoun might not be ready to tip his hand yet, though. Boeing is investigating what it calls the NMA, or new medium-size aircraft, but details of size and engine technology—and when it might developed—haven’t been discussed with investors in detail. What’s more, the NMA hasn’t really been addressed on an earnings conference call since January.
\n
What happens to the stock after earnings is anyone’s guess. Over the past eight quarters, shares have dropped five times and risen three times. Options markets imply the stock will move about 3%, up or down, following earnings.
\n
That isn’t too much for all the turmoil faced by the company over the past 24 months.
\n
Boeing stock is down 1%, at $223.61, in recent trading. Investors shouldn’t expect much good news, but the results shouldn’t matter too much for the stock.\nFor the quarter, Wall Street is looking for an 81-cent-per-share loss from $16.5 billion in sales. For the year-ago quarter, Boeing (ticker: BA) reported an adjusted loss of almost $5 a share from $11.8 billion in sales.\nThose aren’t great results, but the commercial aerospace giant is still digging out from the dual crises of the 737 MAX and Covid-19. Things are so challenging for the company, it could report almost anything without shocking investors.\n“There are enough items that are unknown that something could be unexpected…. More than likely, it will miss,” Edward Jones analyst Jeff Windau tells Barron’s. “Cash burn [will be] in focus.” Wall Street expects Boeing to burn through another $2.8 billion in cash after burning through $3.7 billion in the first quarter.\nIn the second quarter of 2018, before Covid-19 and the worldwide grounding of the 737 MAX in March 2019 after two deadly crashes within five months, Boeing earned $3.33 a share from $24.3 billion in sales. Free cash flow came in at $4.3 billion. Numbers like that are still far down the road.\nCommercial air travel is improving, though. Over the past week, U.S. air travel was down about 21% compared with the same week in 2019. Three months ago, air travel in the U.S. was down about 42% compared with the same week in April 2019.\nThat improvement won’t be reflected in Boeing numbers. We think Boeing is set to announce another monster 2Q loss.” He projects cash burn of about $2.8 billion, in line with the Wall Street consensus estimate.\nStallard and Windau both rate Boeing shares Hold. Stallard’s price target is $153 a share. Windau doesn’t publish price targets for stocks he covers.\nStallard notes in his report that demand is improving, “particularly for new narrow body aircraft.”\nWhat investors will want to hear about is a new plane to be developed by Boeing. CEO Dave Calhoun might not be ready to tip his hand yet, though. Boeing is investigating what it calls the NMA, or new medium-size aircraft, but details of size and engine technology—and when it might developed—haven’t been discussed with investors in detail. What’s more, the NMA hasn’t really been addressed on an earnings conference call since January.\nWhat happens to the stock after earnings is anyone’s guess. Over the past eight quarters, shares have dropped five times and risen three times. Options markets imply the stock will move about 3%, up or down, following earnings.\nThat isn’t too much for all the turmoil faced by the company over the past 24 months.\nBoeing stock is down 1%, at $223.61, in recent trading. Year to date, Boeing shares are up about 5%, trailing behind comparable gains of the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average. Since reporting first-quarter numbers, Boeing stock is down about 5%, trailing the market by about 10 percentage points.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":285,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":898536967,"gmtCreate":1628508507659,"gmtModify":1633746596540,"author":{"id":"4087463795393260","authorId":"4087463795393260","name":"Dhiran","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6dc0fab3442b0ae4e189a5da3a919dc9","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087463795393260","authorIdStr":"4087463795393260"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Not
