A separate report showed U.S. retail sales dropped more than expected in May.
\n
“There was a bit of a reaction to the economic data we got, which, for the most part, shows that the economy is starting to wean itself off stimulus, the recovery is slowing down a little, and inflation is continuing to grow,” said Ed Moya, senior market analyst for the Americas at OANDA.
\n
“We’re seeing some very modest weakness, and it’ll be choppy leading up to the Fed decision. Right now, the Fed is probably in a position to show they are thinking about tapering, but they’re still a long way from actually doing it.”
\n
The Fed is likely to announce in August or September a strategy for reducing its massive bond buying program, but will not start cutting monthly purchases until early next year, a Reuters poll of economists found.
\n
The benchmark S&P 500, the blue-chip Dow Jones and the tech-focused Nasdaq have risen 13%, 12.1% and 9.2% respectively so far this year, largely driven by optimism about an economic reopening.
\n
However, the S&P 500 has been broadly stuck within a range, despite recording its 29th record-high finish of 2021 on Monday, versus 33 for all of last year.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 94.42 points, or 0.27%, to 34,299.33, the S&P 500 lost 8.56 points, or 0.20%, to 4,246.59 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 101.29 points, or 0.71%, to 14,072.86.
\n
Seven of the 11 major S&P sectors slipped. Here are the risks, and how Apple stock could be impacted.
\n
If the battle with Epic Games over competitive policy in the App Store was not enough, Apple is now facing another war on the antitrust front. Think of Amazon ranking their own offerings higher than its competitors’ on amazon.com, or Alphabet displaying their devices first on a search page.
\n
The other two are tangentially related to the first two. One limits Big Tech’s ability to acquire companies that may compete with other vendors on their platforms. The last pertains to users’ rights and ability to transfer their own data to other, even if competing platforms.
\n
For now, the new legislation is still in the pipeline. Before being considered for a vote on the floor of the House, the proposal would first need to clear the Judiciary Subcommittee. Between now and then, expect lobbying efforts to be deployed to slow the process down or even halt it altogether.
\n
Risks to Apple
\n
In my opinion, all FAAMG companies stand to lose from the proposed legislation – including Microsoft, a company that fought its own antitrust war in the 1990s, but that has remained mostly away from the spotlight this time. Which tech company might suffer most is subject to debate.
\n
Apple would probably “feel the heat” mostly within its services segment. The company has already been accused of being too powerful a gatekeeper of the App Store, a popular application platform through which tens of millions of developers offer their products and services.
\n
Outside the App Store, it is unclear how Apple might be impacted by the legislation. CEO Tim Cook has made his case clear that Apple is not a monopoly in any of the businesses that it is involved in – from smartphones to personal computers and most, if not all, digital services.
\n
Nothing new so far
\n
Interestingly, and despite the news having surfaced during trading hours on June 11, Apple stock barely moved in response. AAPL shares ended the trading day up nearly 1%, very much at the high for the day and ahead of the S&P 500’s 0.2% gains.
\n
In my view, investors have brushed off the news because it is largely aligned with expectations that have been set years ago.Even before the US elections for President and Senators in 2020, it had become clear that the left and right parties in Congress would be united by their desire to limit Big Tech’s power.
\n
I find it unlikely that Apple stock will be swayed primarily by the antitrust efforts in Washington, D.C. – at least for now. How far can it go from here?
\n
Nvidia shares have finally been giving bulls something to cheer about as the stock scorches higher.
\n
Just like most of big tech, Nvidia topped in early September, hitting roughly $588 a share. We’ve had spurts above that level, but none of the rallies have been sustainable.
\n
That’s despite a shortage in semiconductors keeping demand elevated. It’s also despite the crypto-mining market keeping demand high for mining-specific chips.
\n
Even with strong earnings and an impressive GTC event (where management again updated its guidance above consensus expectations), Nvidia stock couldn’t get moving.
\n
Others like Apple and Amazon have been experiencing the same thing - strong operations and better-than-expected results but a stagnant share price.
\n
For Nvidia though, shares finally broke out after the company’s most recent earnings report. Now investors are trying to figure out just how far this stock can run.
\n
Trading Nvidia
\n
Daily chart of Nvidia stock.
\n
Shares stumbled for a day after the company reported earnings in mid-May. Growth stocks were still in a bear market and investors weren’t sure if they should buy Nvidia despite strong results.
\n
It took a day to figure out, but then they started to gobble up the stock.
\n
However, with sustained growth acting as a tailwind and a 4-for-1 stock split coming on July 20, buyers may continue to bid this name higher. That’s what we saw near the end of summer last year with Apple and Tesla.
\n
In any regard, the rally here has been steep and while Nvidia stock has rested for a few days at a time, it still has not tested 10-day moving average in almost a month.
\n
As it stands now, shares are hitting the 161.8% extension areas from both the larger and shorter ranges from 2021. Additionally, there is a bit of divergence on the Williams %R reading.
\n
These observations have me a bit cautious on the stock in the short term, but not in a bearish way. Rather, it leaves me mindful of some potential consolidation, which to be honest, would be healthy after such a big rally.
\n
That said, I am bullish on Nvidia. If this stock can maintain the 10-day moving average and hang around $700, it opens the door for higher prices. Specifically, it keeps $750 to $766 on the table, the latter of which comes into play around the two-times range extension.
\n
At $750 post-split, Nvidia would be trading at $187.50. That could leave room up to $200 in a post-split world or $800 in pre-split world.
\n
For long-term investors or traders, the 261.8% extension up near $860 seems impossibly far off, but if Nvidia can continue to trend higher, I wouldn’t rule this target out in the future.
\n
On a close below $690 and the 10-day moving average, we could get a retest of the $650 breakout level and/or the 21-day moving average.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Nvidia Is in Rally Mode: Here’s How High It Can Go
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNvidia Is in Rally Mode: Here’s How High It Can Go\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-15 07:47 GMT+8 TheStreet\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Nvidia has been ripping higher over the past month, easily running to new all-time highs. It’s also despite the crypto-mining market keeping demand high for mining-specific chips.\nEven with strong earnings and an impressive GTC event (where management again updated its guidance above consensus expectations), Nvidia stock couldn’t get moving.\nOthers like Apple and Amazon have been experiencing the same thing - strong operations and better-than-expected results but a stagnant share price.\nFor Nvidia though, shares finally broke out after the company’s most recent earnings report. Now investors are trying to figure out just how far this stock can run.\nTrading Nvidia\nDaily chart of Nvidia stock.\nShares stumbled for a day after the company reported earnings in mid-May. Growth stocks were still in a bear market and investors weren’t sure if they should buy Nvidia despite strong results.\nIt took a day to figure out, but then they started to gobble up the stock.\nHowever, with sustained growth acting as a tailwind and a 4-for-1 stock split coming on July 20, buyers may continue to bid this name higher. That’s what we saw near the end of summer last year with Apple and Tesla.\nIn any regard, the rally here has been steep and while Nvidia stock has rested for a few days at a time, it still has not tested 10-day moving average in almost a month.\nAs it stands now, shares are hitting the 161.8% extension areas from both the larger and shorter ranges from 2021. Additionally, there is a bit of divergence on the Williams %R reading.\nThese observations have me a bit cautious on the stock in the short term, but not in a bearish way. Rather, it leaves me mindful of some potential consolidation, which to be honest, would be healthy after such a big rally.\nThat said, I am bullish on Nvidia. If this stock can maintain the 10-day moving average and hang around $700, it opens the door for higher prices. Specifically, it keeps $750 to $766 on the table, the latter of which comes into play around the two-times range extension.\nAt $750 post-split, Nvidia would be trading at $187.50. That could leave room up to $200 in a post-split world or $800 in pre-split world.\nFor long-term investors or traders, the 261.8% extension up near $860 seems impossibly far off, but if Nvidia can continue to trend higher, I wouldn’t rule this target out in the future.\nOn a close below $690 and the 10-day moving average, we could get a retest of the $650 breakout level and/or the 21-day moving average.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":254,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":163497548,"gmtCreate":1623890760084,"gmtModify":1634026395248,"author":{"id":"3585453186881138","authorId":"3585453186881138","name":"3875ba23","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3585453186881138","authorIdStr":"3585453186881138"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Tesla👍","listText":"Tesla👍","text":"Tesla👍","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/163497548","repostId":"1138650073","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":21,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":160496201,"gmtCreate":1623803734903,"gmtModify":1634027986014,"author":{"id":"3585453186881138","authorId":"3585453186881138","name":"3875ba23","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3585453186881138","authorIdStr":"3585453186881138"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"what goes down must come up","listText":"what goes down must come up","text":"what goes down must come up","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/160496201","repostId":"2143680537","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2143680537","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1623797252,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2143680537?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-16 06:47","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street ends down as data spooks investors awaiting Fed report","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2143680537","media":"Reuters","summary":"Wall Street’s main indices closed lower on Tuesday as data showing stronger inflation and weaker U.S. retail sales in May spooked already-jittery investors awaiting the results of the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting.Assurance from the Fed that rising prices are transitory and falling U.S. Treasury yields have helped ease some concerns over inflation and supported U.S. stocks in recent weeks. Officials also pledged to keep policy supportive for now to encourage an ongoing jobs recovery.
\n
The Fed cited an improved economic outlook, with overall economic growth expected to hit 7% this year.
