That’s almost double the 23% return for the real estate sector, which is the second-best sector. The S&P 500 is up nearly 12% this year.\nEnergy’s big start to the year means that even if the sector goes nowhere for the rest of 2021, it will still be the best year since 1990 by nearly 10%, according to Bay Crest Partners chief market technician Jonathan Krinsky.\nThe surge in energy stocks comes on the back of a recovery in oil prices, and as investors return to areas of the market that were left out of 2020′s rebound from the pandemic lows. The sector was also starting from a low base. In 2020, the group fell 37.3% for its worst performance since inception in 1989.\nKrinsky is among those saying the upside move is overdone, and his call is to sell crude oil and energy stocks broadly. From a technical standpoint, he noted that the $420 to $450 level acted as support — a floor — for the group during the last decade. But then during the Covid sell-off, the sector plunged below that key level — breaking below $200 — as the pandemic ground economies around the world to a halt.\n\nThe S&P Energy Sector has since recovered and traded as high as $420 on Thursday, inching closer to their prior support level, which now acts as resistance, or where an uptrend could be expected to reverse.\n“Oftentimes when you break a very important support like that, once you come back and test it as resistance, it’s difficult to exceed that — at least on the first try,” Krinsky noted.\nGauging performance from Jan. 1 might seem arbitrary, but he added that the sector’s outperformance is notable from virtually any date. Over the last eight months, the group has returned over 90%, which Krinsky says is more than two times the prior largest such gain over the last three decades.\n“Even on a rolling basis this is somewhat unprecedented,” he said. His bearish call on the sector also stems from other commodities breaking down, including lumber and copper. Bank of America recently noted that the entire sector makes up just 2% of the average long-only portfolio, or less than half the allocation toward Facebook, which sits at 4.2%.\nEnergy still comprises a tiny portion of the S&P 500, but as the sector’s weighting grows, fund managers who shun the space could risk returns.\nMRB Partners on Thursday reiterated its overweight rating on the group, saying the recovery in demand for petroleum products, coupled with ongoing supply constraints, should push oil prices higher, leading to further returns for energy stocks.\n“Strengthening cash flows, leaner cost structures, and better capital discipline position the industry to moderately increase capital returns to shareholders,” strategists led by Salvatore Ruscitti wrote in a note to clients. “Relative performance will benefit from the reflationary backdrop and our expectations for a softer U.S. dollar.”\nWhen it comes to specific stocks, Gilman Hill Asset Management CEO Jenny Harrington owns names includingChevron,OneokandKinder Morgan. She noted on Thursday’s“Halftime Report”that it’s important to look at the whole picture. While oil is at its highest level in nearly two and a half years, it’s trading at about half the level it was just a few years ago. Even the most optimistic analyst surveyed by Refinitiv has a price target for AMC that's more than 70% below the current share price.\nBut isn't AMC's business picking up? Yep. The easing of restrictions has enabled the company to reopen 99% of its U.S. theaters. AMC could benefit as seating capacity limitations imposed by state and local governments are raised. The White House issued the following statement:</p>\n<blockquote>\n <i>The United States and our G7 partners are actively considering a global effort to multiply the impact of the proposed Special Drawing Rights (SDR) allocation to the countries most in need…At potentially up to $100 billion in size, the proposed effort would further support health needs – including vaccinations…</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p><b>A separate press release from the same day continued the same sentiment, stating, “We strongly support the effort to recycle SDRs to further support health needs.”</b></p>\n<p>In another development, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said last Wednesday that she expected the fund’s governors to approve a $650 billion allocation of SDRs in mid-August.</p>\n<p><u><b>What exactly are SDRs?</b></u></p>\n<p><b>Basically, they’re world money.</b></p>\n<p>In 1969, the IMF created the SDR, possibly to serve as a source of liquidity and alternative to the dollar.</p>\n<p><b>In 1971, the dollar did devalue relative to gold and other major currencies. SDRs were issued by the IMF from 1970 to 1981. None were issued after 1981 until 2009 during the global financial crisis.</b></p>\n<p>The 2009 issuance was a case of the IMF “testing the plumbing” of the system to make sure it worked properly. Because zero SDRs were issued from 1981–2009, the IMF wanted to rehearse the governance, computational, and legal processes for issuing SDRs.</p>\n<p>The purpose was partly to alleviate liquidity concerns at the time, but it was also to make sure the system works in case a large, new issuance was needed on short notice. The 2009 experiment showed the system worked fine.</p>\n<p>Since 2009, the IMF has proceeded in slow steps to create a platform for massive new issuances of SDRs and establish a deep liquid pool of SDR-denominated assets.</p>\n<p>On January 7, 2011, the IMF issued a master plan for replacing the dollar with SDRs.</p>\n<p>This included creating an SDR bond market, SDR dealers, and ancillary facilities such as repos, derivatives, settlement and clearance channels, and the entire apparatus of a liquid bond market.</p>\n<p>A liquid bond market is critical. U.S. Treasury bonds are among the world’s most liquid securities, which makes the dollar a legitimate reserve currency.</p>\n<p><b>The IMF study recommended that the SDR bond market replicate the infrastructure of the U.S. Treasury market, with hedging, financing, settlement and clearance mechanisms substantially similar to those used to support trading in Treasury securities today.</b></p>\n<p>In August 2016, the World Bank announced that it would issue SDR-denominated bonds to private purchasers. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the largest bank in China, will be the lead underwriter on the deal.</p>\n<p>In September 2016, the IMF included the Chinese yuan in the SDR basket, giving China a seat at the monetary table.</p>\n<p><b>So, the framework has been created to expand the SDR’s scope.</b></p>\n<p>The SDR can be issued in abundance to IMF members and used in the future for a select list of the most important transactions in the world, including balance-of-payments settlements, oil pricing, and the financial accounts of the world’s largest corporations, such as Exxon Mobil, Toyota, and Royal Dutch Shell.</p>\n<p>The basic idea behind the SDR is that the<b>global monetary system centered around the dollar is inherently unstable</b>and needs to be reformed.</p>\n<p>Part of the problem is due to a process called Triffin’s Dilemma, named after economist Robert Triffin. Triffin said that the issuer of a dominant reserve currency had to run trade deficits so that the rest of the world could have enough of the currency to buy goods from the issuer and expand world trade.</p>\n<p>But, if you run deficits long enough, you would eventually go broke. This was said about the dollar in the early 1960s. That’s almost double the 23% return for the real estate sector, which is the second-best sector. The S&P 500 is up nearly 12% this year.\nEnergy’s big start to the year means that even if the sector goes nowhere for the rest of 2021, it will still be the best year since 1990 by nearly 10%, according to Bay Crest Partners chief market technician Jonathan Krinsky.\nThe surge in energy stocks comes on the back of a recovery in oil prices, and as investors return to areas of the market that were left out of 2020′s rebound from the pandemic lows. The sector was also starting from a low base. In 2020, the group fell 37.3% for its worst performance since inception in 1989.\nKrinsky is among those saying the upside move is overdone, and his call is to sell crude oil and energy stocks broadly. From a technical standpoint, he noted that the $420 to $450 level acted as support — a floor — for the group during the last decade. But then during the Covid sell-off, the sector plunged below that key level — breaking below $200 — as the pandemic ground economies around the world to a halt.\n\nThe S&P Energy Sector has since recovered and traded as high as $420 on Thursday, inching closer to their prior support level, which now acts as resistance, or where an uptrend could be expected to reverse.\n“Oftentimes when you break a very important support like that, once you come back and test it as resistance, it’s difficult to exceed that — at least on the first try,” Krinsky noted.\nGauging performance from Jan. 1 might seem arbitrary, but he added that the sector’s outperformance is notable from virtually any date. Over the last eight months, the group has returned over 90%, which Krinsky says is more than two times the prior largest such gain over the last three decades.\n“Even on a rolling basis this is somewhat unprecedented,” he said. His bearish call on the sector also stems from other commodities breaking down, including lumber and copper. And while the country has regained two-thirds of the positions it lost after the coronavirus arrived, New York has recouped fewer than half, leaving a deficit of more than 500,000 jobs.\nRestaurants and bars are filling up again with New Yorkers eager for a return to normal, but scars are everywhere. Boarded-up storefronts and for-lease signs dot many neighbourhoods. Empty sidewalks in midtown Manhattan make it feel like a weekend in midweek. Subway ridership on weekdays is less than half the level of two years ago.\nThe city's economic plight stems largely from its heavy reliance on office workers, business travellers, tourists and the service businesses catering to all of them. All eyes are on September, when many companies aim to bring their workers back to the office and Broadway fully reopens, attracting more visitors and their dollars. But even then, the rebound will be only partial.\nThe shift towards remote work endangers thousands of businesses that serve commuters who are likely to go into the office less frequently than before the pandemic, if at all. By the end of September, the Partnership for New York City, a business advocacy group, predicts that only 62 per cent of office workers will return, mostly three days a week.\nRestoring the city to economic health will be an imposing challenge for its next mayor, who is likely to emerge from the Democratic primary on Tuesday. The candidates have offered differing visions of how to help struggling small businesses and create jobs.\n\"We are bouncing back, but we are nowhere near where we were in 2019,\" said Ms Barbara Byrne Denham, senior economist at Oxford Economics. \"We suffered more than everyone else, so it will take a little longer to recover.\"\nAt 10.9 per cent in May, the city's unemployment rate was nearly twice the national average of 5.8 per cent.
