Lucid&nbsp;delivered on its promises in 2021&nbsp;by expanding its manufacturing facility, going public and raising cash, entering mass production, and starting customer deliveries. Yet&nbsp;recent events, most notably a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) request for documents&nbsp;that was issued on Dec. 3&nbsp;and a controversial senior note offering, have taken a toll on Lucid stock of late.</p>\n<p>Despite the bad press, there's reason to believe Lucid could be a great stock to own over the long term. The timing of the senior note offering was fantastic for Lucid, which valued its stock at $54.78 per share (a 37% premium to its share price at the time of this writing). It also gives the company the cash needed to accelerate production, expand manufacturing capacity, and meet a customer demand that currently&nbsp;sits at over 17,000 reservations. Given its incredible battery technology, Lucid could become a&nbsp;staple in the luxury sedan market&nbsp;over time.</p>\n<p><b>Rivian isn't worth $86 billion...yet</b></p>\n<p>Rivian has seen its stock sink as the&nbsp;honeymoon period after its initial public offering&nbsp;(IPO) draws to a close. In fact, Rivian's share price&nbsp;fell over 10%&nbsp;on Dec. 17 after the company reported its Q3 2021 earnings, which was its first report as a public company. Lower-than-expected customer deliveries, wider-than-expected losses, and the harsh reality that it's going to take a lot of money to grow its manufacturing and charging network to the size Rivian hopes added up to an overall disappointing quarter. However, Rivian's reservation numbers are growing at a breakneck pace -- quite a bit faster than Lucid's, in fact. But lately, it's found itself outside the limelight, or briefly in it for negative reasons.</p>\n<p>Nio has been mass-producing&nbsp;electric cars&nbsp;for a few years now and is becoming an established player in the space.Inconsistent production numbers, and an&nbsp;uncertain growth plan in Europe&nbsp;are all headwinds facing Nio right now. What's more, the SEC is&nbsp;tightening its grip&nbsp;on foreign companies like Nio.</p>\n<p>However, Nio held its highly anticipated Nio Day on Dec. 18, unveiling its new ET5 midsize sedan and making various announcements. Nio is showing no shortage of innovation and could be a great long-term winner.</p>\n<p><b>Firing on all electric motors</b></p>\n<p>Tesla is down \"just\" 25% from its high as investors grapple with valuation concerns for many growth stocks. Tesla isn't the same unprofitable and streaky company it once was, but it is priced to perfection at a 22.5 price-to-sales (P/S) ratio and a 301.8 price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio.</p>\n<p>Despite the sky-high valuation,there's a lot to like about Tesla the company. Its industry-leading operating margin, impressive growth, diverse business, and market-leading position in the growing EV industry are&nbsp;reasons to like the company for years to come.</p>\n<p><b>An EV basket for 2022</b></p>\n<p>Two ways to approach the sell-off in top-tier EV stocks are the basket strategy and the wait-and-see strategy. Investing in, say, a&nbsp;50/50 split of Lucid and Tesla, or even an equal split of all four companies on this list, gives exposure to multiple aspects of the market while limiting the damage any single company can inflict on your portfolio.</p>\n<p>However, there's a good chance that we are years away from consistent profitability from Lucid, Rivian, or Nio. The question is: Which one is the better investment right now?</p>\n<p><b>Starbucks</b></p>\n<p>Investors clearly didn't like Starbucks' latest quarterly earnings report. Following the late-October release, they sent the stock down by 6% to about $106. The issue stemmed from&nbsp;higher costs&nbsp;that will likely continue weighing on near-term profitability.</p>\n<p>In the latest quarter, Starbucks' operating margin under&nbsp;U.S. generally accepted accounting principles(GAAP) more than doubled to 18.2%. But for next year, management expects a 17% margin, largely due to higher wages. While this is below its 18% to 19% long-term target, I believe this will prove temporary.</p>\n<p>That's because Starbucks continues to post strong sales growth. That will help the company increase prices and leverage expenses.</p>\n<p>Starbucks' quarterly revenue rose by 31% to $8.1 billion, driven by new restaurant openings and a 17% increase in same-store sales. For fiscal 2022, management expects a high single-digit percentage increase in comps and to open 2,000 restaurants, mostly outside of the U.S. It anticipates these will lead to revenue of $32.5 billion to $33 billion,</p>\n<p>In short, demand for Starbucks' products, which took a pause during the pandemic due to store closures, remains strong.</p>\n<p><b>Walt Disney</b></p>\n<p>Disney's shares have fallen this year due to concerns about&nbsp;slowing growth at Disney+, its streaming service. As it grew by leaps and bounds during the pandemic, I'm not concerned.</p>\n<p>After all, Disney+ had 116 million paid subscribers at the start of July 2021, compared to 103.6 million in April. This is also more than double the 57.5 million from a year ago.</p>\n<p>While it may not have the supersonic growth of the past, Disney+ is still adding subscribers at a nice pace. What's more, Disney is far more than a streaming service. Its vast media empire includes parks, movies, several television networks, and retail stores.</p>\n<p>This helps the company produce strong results, even if one part of the business slows. For instance, this year saw the return of live sports that helped its ESPN network, and theme parks reopened. Its quarterly revenue grew by 45% to $17 billion year over year.</p>\n<p>With popular media properties, such as a stable of Marvel characters and movies, the future looks bright for Disney. That's because it has highly recognized and well-regarded brands that have proven their staying power. Management has strengthened its position, including buying Twenty-First Century Fox a couple of years ago, which added television networks, Marvel characters, and provided a controlling interest in the streaming service Hulu.</p>\n<p>After examining both companies, both have strong brands that attract a lot of people. For me, the edge goes to Starbucks, since it has increased dividends since 2010, including during the pandemic. It's nice to receive the income, and it's a positive sign that management and the board of directors have confidence in the future.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Disney suspended its dividend last year. One of the things that makes her a popular investor to follow is that all the buys and sells from these funds are published daily.</p>\n<p>Since she has a history of picking high-tech stocks at good prices, we asked three Motley Fool contributors to highlight one company that her funds have purchased recently that investors should consider adding to their portfolio.</p>\n<p>They came up with <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Meta Platforms</a> </b>(NASDAQ:FB), <b>Palantir</b> (NYSE:PLTR), and <b>Twilio</b> (NYSE:TWLO).</p>\n<h2>Meta Platforms: The company formerly known as Facebook</h2>\n<p><b>Danny Vena (Meta Platforms): </b>The <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ARKF\">ARK Fintech Innovation ETF</a></b> has made some bold moves lately, no doubt spurred on by Cathie Wood's vision of the future. One of the biggest purchases over the past week is the addition of a big chunk of Meta Platforms, the company formerly known as Facebook.</p>\n<p>Over the past week, the fund has stockpiled more than 100,000 shares of Meta, worth more than $33 million (as of this writing). Perhaps more importantly, ARK Fintech Innovation already had a substantial stake in Meta, now equal to a roughly 3% position, and valued at nearly $103 million -- making it the fund's 11th largest position.</p>\n<p>Meta has been working to debut its long-awaited digital currency dubbed Diem, formerly known as Libra. The company is a founding member of the Diem Association, which underpins the upcoming cryptocurrency.&nbsp;Diem is a blockchain-based payment system that was designed from the ground up with payments in mind, focusing on \"consumer safety, financial stability, and combating financial crime.\"</p>\n<p>Additionally, just last month, Meta launched a pilot of Novi -- its cryptocurrency wallet -- to a small number of users in the U.S. and Guatemala.</p>\n<p>Given Wood's early adoption and bullish track record regarding <b>Bitcoin</b>, it's little wonder the rock star investor might place a similar bet on a Meta-backed cryptocurrency and digital wallet. But those fintech aspirations notwithstanding, there are plenty of other reasons to be bullish on Meta.</p>\n<p>Let's not forget that Facebook is one of the most recognized companies on the planet. For the third quarter, Facebook reported 1.93 billion daily active users (DAUs), up 6% year over year, and 2.91 billion monthly active users (MAUs). When you expand that to include the company's other platforms (Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger) that rises to 2.81 billion DAUs and 3.58 billion MAUs.</p>\n<p>That many users creates a powerful network effect for the social media baron, helping Meta generate significant advertising revenue to support its moonshots. In the third quarter, revenue of $29 billion grew 35% year over year -- even as the company dealt with privacy reforms rolled out by <b>Apple</b>, which made it more difficult to measure the success of advertising campaigns across devices using iOS. Meta also generated more than $9.1 billion in net income and $9.5 billion in free cash flow.</p>\n<p>Even as the company faces regulatory challenges, Meta is preparing for the metaverse, a digital realm online where users play, work, and shop. Meta describes this as \"the next evolution of social connection ... [where] you'll be able to socialize, learn, collaborate and play in ways that go beyond what's possible today.\"</p>\n<p>Meta sees the metaverse as its next big growth driver, as well as a way to retain young, tech savvy users. The company has a head start in the areas of augmented reality (AR) and virtual-reality, which will likely be key components in its broader strategy.</p>\n<p>It also doesn't hurt that the stock is on sale at a 15% discount to recent highs.</p>\n<h2>Palantir: Wood continues adding shares to this insight seeker</h2>\n<p><b>Will Healy</b> <b>(Palantir): </b>Palantir stands out from other data companies in that it specializes in delivering insights. The company works with national security and law enforcement organizations through its Gotham software, functionality that has everyone talking about Palantir stock.</p>\n<p>Moreover, the company has also developed a product for the commercial space, called Foundry, which currently drives the company's fastest growth.</p>\n<p>Seeing the potential of these products, Wood has accumulated Palantir shares in the ARK Innovation Fund since February, buying multiple lots with only one sale in September. This has taken the total in that fund to more than 24 million shares, a 2.8% weighting. Wood has added Palantir shares less aggressively to the <b>ARK Industrial Innovation ETF</b>. Nonetheless, more than 1.1 million Palantir shares make up about 1% of this fund.</p>\n<p>Palantir reported strong numbers in its third-quarter 2021 earnings report. Third-quarter revenue of $392 million surged 36% from year-ago levels. This led to an adjusted net income of $82 million. Palantir also raised fourth-quarter guidance, and predicted the $418 million in revenue will rise 30% year over year if that number holds.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the stock dropped 9% in Tuesday trading as the company forecast an adjusted operating margin of 22% for Q4. Analysts had expected 24%. Moreover, a government document indicated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) might replace Palantir's system with a competing product, though a recent U.S. Army contract could mitigate that loss.</p>\n<p>Additionally, while Wood bought just under 1 million shares between the two funds on that day, the stock fell an additional 7% on Wednesday. With that move, Palantir stock wipes out all of its 2021 gains and has fallen 4% in 2021 as of the time of this writing. Also, despite that drop, Palantir trades at a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 27, well above the average S&amp;P 500 stock, which sells at just over three times sales.</p>\n<p>With its data insight capabilities, Palantir's massive revenue growth should continue. However, given the high sales multiple and the stock falling on a mostly favorable earnings report, investors may not want to follow Wood's lead in the near term.</p>\n<h2>Twilio: Expanding its mission</h2>\n<p><b>Brian Withers (Twilio): </b>Twilio announced earnings on Oct. 28, and the stock took a 17% haircut the next day. Since then, Cathie Wood's ARK funds snapped up over 415,000 shares of the stock representing about $122 million. These buys moved this customer communication platform specialist to the 12th largest holding across its funds. Let take a look at why she might be buying massive quantities of this tech company, which appears to be on sale.</p>\n<p>First, let's look at the quarterly results and why investors may have been spooked. The top line grew at a massive 65% year over year, but subtracting the contributions for the Zipwhip and Segment.io acquisitions, the year-over-year growth drops to 38%. This is a deceleration from the last four quarters of organic year-over-year growth that were between 47% and 54%. This slowdown was one reason for the stock sell-off, the other was likely the growing losses. It just announced its Twilio Engage platform which takes advantage of the integration of Segment.io's customer data platform and Twilio's core messaging services. This new product will enable businesses to personalize messages based on customer behaviors and will make the messages customers receive even more relevant to their needs.</p>\n<p>Lastly, the company has updated its mission. For the last 13 years, the mission has been \"Fuel the Future of Communications.\" Today the mission is broader, focusing on its core user, the software developer. It is to \"Unlock the Imagination of Builders.\" This may not make any impact this quarter or even in the coming year. But over time, this allows the company to expand beyond just its communication products.</p>\n<p>With the stock more than 30% off its high, it could be a good time to jump in and pick up some shares yourself. The company works with national security and law enforcement organizations through its Gotham software, functionality that has everyone talking about Palantir stock.\nMoreover, the company has also developed a product for the commercial space, called Foundry, which currently drives the company's fastest growth.\nSeeing the potential of these products, Wood has accumulated Palantir shares in the ARK Innovation Fund since February, buying multiple lots with only one sale in September. This has taken the total in that fund to more than 24 million shares, a 2.8% weighting. Wood has added Palantir shares less aggressively to the ARK Industrial Innovation ETF. Nonetheless, more than 1.1 million Palantir shares make up about 1% of this fund.\nPalantir reported strong numbers in its third-quarter 2021 earnings report. Third-quarter revenue of $392 million surged 36% from year-ago levels. This led to an adjusted net income of $82 million. Palantir also raised fourth-quarter guidance, and predicted the $418 million in revenue will rise 30% year over year if that number holds.\nNonetheless, the stock dropped 9% in Tuesday trading as the company forecast an adjusted operating margin of 22% for Q4. Analysts had expected 24%. Moreover, a government document indicated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) might replace Palantir's system with a competing product, though a recent U.S. Army contract could mitigate that loss.\nAdditionally, while Wood bought just under 1 million shares between the two funds on that day, the stock fell an additional 7% on Wednesday. Year-to-date the S&amp;P 500 index is up 864.57 points or 23.02%.</p>\n<p>ARK’s seven ETFs returned an average of 141% in 2020, on the back of gains from companies such as&nbsp;<b>Tesla Inc.</b>,and&nbsp;<b>Teladoc Health Inc</b>.,&nbsp;making Wood the toast of Wall Street. But those funds, focused primarily on companies that aren’t yet profitable, have been limping lower since hitting a peak back in February, and their woeful performance has raised questions about the prospects for the ETFs in the months and years to come.</p>\n<p>Wood urged investors to maintain their support of the ARK complex and said that maintaining a long-term, five-year time horizon would be the best way to judge the fund manager’s true performance.</p>\n<p>“With a five-year investment time horizon, our forecasts for these platforms suggest that our strategies today could deliver a 30-40% compound annual rate of return during the next five years,” the ARK CEO wrote.</p>\n<p>“In other words, if our research is correct—and I believe that our research on innovation is the best in the financial world—then our strategies will triple to quintuple in value over the next five years,”&nbsp;Wood added.</p>\n<p>The ARK founder also made the case that the Nasdaq and S&amp;P 500 could be the bigger disappointment to return-eager investors in the longer-term because they are more overvalued than the disruptive investments that comprise her funds.</p>\n<p>“Unlike many innovation-related stocks, equity benchmarks are selling at record high prices and near record high valuations, 26x for the S&amp;P 500 and 127x for the Nasdaq on a trailing twelve-month basis,” Wood wrote.</p>\n<p>She said that the “five major innovation platforms which involve 14 technologies are likely to transform the existing world order and that so-called tried and true investment strategies “will disappoint during the next five to ten years as DNA sequencing, robotics, energy storage, artificial intelligence, and blockchain technology scale and converge.”</p>\n<p>Wood also made the case that the so-called wall of worry, with inflation fears representing perhaps the biggest concern, provided an ideal backdrop for further advances in innovation stocks in the longer run because the dot-com markets of the late-1990s weren’t properly buffeted by investor concerns. The thinking is that “walls of worry” tend to limit market euphoria.</p>\n<p>“In our view, the wall of worry built on the back of high multiple stocks bodes well for equities in the innovation space,” she wrote. “No wall of worry existed or tested the equity market in 1999. Nio: A spec for growth</h2>\n<p>Chinese electric vehicle maker <b>Nio</b> (NYSE:NIO) already has a market cap of about $65 billion, and it has yet to make a profit. That makes it speculative, and by traditional metrics, expensive. But successful growth stocks can earn their valuations quickly, and Nio is at a stage where it is starting to realize its potential.</p>\n<p>The 66,395 vehicle deliveries in the first nine months of 2021 represent growth of over 150% compared to the same period last year. Along with its manufacturing partner, it is expanding production with a new facility in Hefei, China, that will double its production capacity to at least 240,000 vehicles annually. The company has also set up a division in Norway, including its Nio House social centers, and soon will have a series of the unique battery swap stations it offers customers in China. A move into Germany is next, at the same time Nio begins selling its first sedan, the luxury ET7. The company also has two other new products planned for 2022.</p>\n<p>In its second-quarter earnings report, Nio showed it more than doubled gross margin year over year, with an adjusted loss from operations compressed by more than half versus the year-ago quarter. If the company continues to progress toward profitability in the third quarter report coming in several weeks, investors will likely continue to support its lofty valuation. As long as the bigger-picture growth story of EV adoption continues to materialize, Nio should be able to take advantage of it. Having it on the list to buy in a market decline makes sense for those who want a better price to add to existing holdings, or who feel uncomfortable investing at the current valuation.</p>\n<h2>2. Costco: Stability when needed</h2>\n<p>Warehouse retailer <b>Costco Wholesale</b> (NASDAQ:COST) is a good stock to add during a downturn both because of its long-term success and its position in the consumer staples sector. Its fortunes have led the stock to far outpace total returns of the <b>S&amp;P 500 index</b> as this 10-year chart shows.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2ecc163fa7c8312600128b1cea5c3a8d\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"387\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>COST Total Return Level data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>But maybe, more importantly, it can give investors above-average stability during an economic downturn as its customers continue to shop for necessities there. Its bulk price offerings become even more desirable for consumers when times are tight. And the annual fee isn't typically something customers look to trim during tough times. As of the end of the company's fiscal fourth quarter, membership renewal rates were over 91% in the U.S. and Canada and almost 89% globally.</p>\n<p>And Costco continues to grow its member base. It told shareholders in its recent fiscal fourth-quarter investor call that it added 1.8 million cardholders in the three-month period ended June 30, for a total membership of 111.6 million. That customer base will provide stability for both Costco and its investors during the next economic down cycle.</p>\n<h2>3. NextEra Energy: A combination of income and growth</h2>\n<p><b>NextEra Energy</b> (NYSE:NEE) is in a unique position to provide investors with income from its electric utility subsidiary while still providing exposure to the renewable energy sector with its NextEra Energy Resources clean energy business.</p>\n<p>The utility business consists of Florida Power &amp; Light and Gulf Power and gives investors stable income from a region that also is experiencing population growth. Through the recently reported 2021 third quarter, both utilities showed growth based on the average number of customer accounts versus the prior-year period for at least the eighth consecutive quarter.</p>\n<p>Besides the comfort of income coming from regulated utility businesses, investors can look to get a cheaper stake in the secular growth of renewable energy by buying NextEra during a downturn. According to NextEra, its Energy Resources subsidiary is the world's largest generator of wind and solar energy, and it also owns growing battery storage assets. But corrections and bear markets are the best opportunities for long-term investors to juice their portfolios.\nWith the market continuing to make new highs, and the only bear market in a decade coming briefly due to the pandemic, now is a good time to get a plan ready for the next one. Consider having a shopping list that has different types of stocks to take advantage of the diversity offered by both growth and income investments.\nThe three stocks below make a good mix for the next bear market shopping list.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Nio: A spec for growth\nChinese electric vehicle maker Nio (NYSE:NIO) already has a market cap of about $65 billion, and it has yet to make a profit. That makes it speculative, and by traditional metrics, expensive. But successful growth stocks can earn their valuations quickly, and Nio is at a stage where it is starting to realize its potential.\nThe 66,395 vehicle deliveries in the first nine months of 2021 represent growth of over 150% compared to the same period last year. Along with its manufacturing partner, it is expanding production with a new facility in Hefei, China, that will double its production capacity to at least 240,000 vehicles annually. The company has also set up a division in Norway, including its Nio House social centers, and soon will have a series of the unique battery swap stations it offers customers in China. A move into Germany is next, at the same time Nio begins selling its first sedan, the luxury ET7. The company also has two other new products planned for 2022.\nIn its second-quarter earnings report, Nio showed it more than doubled gross margin year over year, with an adjusted loss from operations compressed by more than half versus the year-ago quarter. If the company continues to progress toward profitability in the third quarter report coming in several weeks, investors will likely continue to support its lofty valuation. As long as the bigger-picture growth story of EV adoption continues to materialize, Nio should be able to take advantage of it. Having it on the list to buy in a market decline makes sense for those who want a better price to add to existing holdings, or who feel uncomfortable investing at the current valuation.\n2. Costco: Stability when needed\nWarehouse retailer Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST) is a good stock to add during a downturn both because of its long-term success and its position in the consumer staples sector. Its fortunes have led the stock to far outpace total returns of the S&P 500 index as this 10-year chart shows.\nCOST Total Return Level data by YCharts\nBut maybe, more importantly, it can give investors above-average stability during an economic downturn as its customers continue to shop for necessities there. Its bulk price offerings become even more desirable for consumers when times are tight. And the annual fee isn't typically something customers look to trim during tough times. As of the end of the company's fiscal fourth quarter, membership renewal rates were over 91% in the U.S. and Canada and almost 89% globally.\nAnd Costco continues to grow its member base. It told shareholders in its recent fiscal fourth-quarter investor call that it added 1.8 million cardholders in the three-month period ended June 30, for a total membership of 111.6 million. That customer base will provide stability for both Costco and its investors during the next economic down cycle.\n3. NextEra Energy: A combination of income and growth\nNextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) is in a unique position to provide investors with income from its electric utility subsidiary while still providing exposure to the renewable energy sector with its NextEra Energy Resources clean energy business.\nThe utility business consists of Florida Power & Light and Gulf Power and gives investors stable income from a region that also is experiencing population growth. Through the recently reported 2021 third quarter, both utilities showed growth based on the average number of customer accounts versus the prior-year period for at least the eighth consecutive quarter.\nBesides the comfort of income coming from regulated utility businesses, investors can look to get a cheaper stake in the secular growth of renewable energy by buying NextEra during a downturn. According to NextEra, its Energy Resources subsidiary is the world's largest generator of wind and solar energy, and it also owns growing battery storage assets. A good portion of the reason the stock has essentially gone nowhere over the course of the year is that the company is both speculative and sells at a relatively high valuation during an environment in which the market has been punishing many highly valued, speculative companies.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bfc4a368e7f8ca30e3472d6bf1737558\" tg-width=\"601\" tg-height=\"558\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: YTD Return.com</span></p>\n<p>Unity Software's relatively high valuation is based upon investors speculating on newer technologies such as&nbsp;RT3D, VR/AR and the metaverse growing rapidly in upcoming years. Essentially, Unity Software investors are betting that newer technologies will give Unity massive upside beyond the company's&nbsp;gaming development platform.</p>\n<p>As I write this, Unity currently sells at sales multiple of&nbsp;approximately 38, which is above the median valuation of 31.06 but below the maximum valuation of 54 since Unity came public.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/04691b759cae09ac0f6da791af42af5d\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"417\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>The current market is in a mostly \"Risk-Off\" state because of worries over supply chain disruptions, inflation and a bearish Federal Reserve and Unity doesn't have the profile of a stock that will do well when the market wants to avoid more speculative investments.</p>\n<p>Unity currently doesn't have any near-term catalysts to send the stock substantially higher over the next year, while at the same time the company is investing heavily in R&amp;D and taking operating losses. Consistent profitability for Unity is more likely to take place 3 to 5 years out, rather than over the next year.</p>\n<p><b>Why Buy Unity?</b></p>\n<p>The world appears to be in the beginning stages of adoption of technologies such as AR/VR, RT3D, Digital Twins, and the metaverse, which are all technologies that are related and overlap with each other. All of the above opportunities are potentially massive opportunities. The metaverse has been estimated by Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) to be an&nbsp;$8 trillion opportunity, while Matthew Ball, CEO of Venture Capital firm Epyllion, believes that the metaverse economy could value between&nbsp;$10-30 trillion&nbsp;in the next 10 to 15 years. Nvidia's (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang thinks that the metaverse economy could one day even be far bigger than that of the real-world economy.</p>\n<p>Recently, Facebook renamed itself to Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:FB), which could be a signal that the era of the metaverse is at the beginning stages. Through both the Facebook and Instagram platform, Mark Zuckerberg likely has enough data on consumer preferences to accurately gauge possible consumer adoption of such concepts as the metaverse. I don't think the decision to rebrand Facebook into Meta Platforms was made lightly. Zuckerberg has likely seen enough data indicating that the world is ready for VR platforms like Oculus and is also ready for concepts such as the metaverse.</p>\n<p>What makes many investors very excited is that while competition like the&nbsp;Unreal Engine&nbsp;provides fairly stiff competition in gaming, Unity is already beginning to dominate the content on emerging AR platforms with 90% share on Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) HoloLens and 90% of Samsung (Grey Market:OTC:SSNLF) Gear VR content. This gives Unity an excellent start at becoming a major player in the buildout of many of the economies that will grow around the metaverse and many other VR/AR applications.</p>\n<p>Investors are already increasingly interested in companies that might be involved in the build-out of the metaverse and Unity is no exception. After the Facebook rebranding announcement on October 28, Unity received a temporary bump in stock price over the next several weeks, rising from a closing price of $144.08 on October 28 to a November 18 closing price of $201.12. So, investors need to be aware that the stock price can move on any type of news concerning the buildout or adoption of the metaverse.</p>\n<p>However, concepts like the metaverse and AR/VR, might take at least ten years to play out. While positive mentions of the metaverse might temporarily goose the company's stock, back in the real-world investors are very concerned about things like inflation and it didn't take long for the metaverse balloon to pop, as today the stock trades below where it was trading before the Meta Platforms announcement was first made. Investors need to realize that it might take at least 3 to 5 years before the metaverse and AR/VR really begins to move the needle in positively affecting Unity Software's fundamentals. Therefore, only long-term investors should buy Unity Software's stock.</p>\n<p><b>Why Investors Should Avoid Unity</b></p>\n<p>Investors looking for short-term gains over the next year should probably avoid Unity Software's stock, as there is substantial downside risk in the near term because of poor investor sentiment toward stocks like Unity. The market is most definitely in a \"Risk-Off\" mood and has little patience for highly valued stocks that are producing an operating loss. The stock is likely to be extremely volatile over the next year. Unity could soar on some analyst positive commentary of the Metaverse and just as easily the next day sink on news of an interest rate hike. Investors that are risk-averse and are overly worried by volatility should avoid buying Unity.</p>\n<p>Secondarily, while the TAM of things like the metaverse and AR/VR might be enormous, adoption could be slow and not be accomplished very easily. According to Morgan Stanley Analyst Brian Nowak, actually getting people to use a metaverse could be a major hurdle. This&nbsp;Business Insider article&nbsp;highlights the numerous problems that the metaverse could encounter such as privacy and whether the metaverse could actually provide value-add solutions for consumer pain points. So, investors can't expect a lot of bang for the buck in the near term from concepts like the metaverse, despite all of the hype in the news media about it.</p>\n<p><b>Unity Software Q3 2021 Earnings Results</b></p>\n<p>Unity Software announced earnings after the bell on November 9th and in a knee-jerk reaction the stock dropped sharply after hours,down at least 9%, likely for the reason that the stock had a huge runup into earnings on the back of Facebook's Meta Platforms announcement and some investors likely wanted to take profits.</p>\n<p>Unity opened on November 10th down 7% from the previous day's close but rapidly ran up after investors really began assessing the company's \"beat and raise\" quarter and the company's acquisition of Weta Digital. Unity's stock actually ended up 3% over the previous day's close. Investors could not really ignore that Unity really had a great quarter.</p>\n<p>Unity total&nbsp;Q3 revenues&nbsp;were up 43% year-over-year to $286.3 million, exceeding company expectations of revenues in the $260 to $265 million range. Unity's revenues also beat consensus analyst expectations of $266 million.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9de611046290b8f49af74bbedb256558\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"433\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Unity Software has three revenue sources named Create, Operate and Strategic Partnerships in which I explained what each segment does in&nbsp;my last article&nbsp;on Unity. Create Solutions and Operate Solutions revenue were $83.7 million and $185.0 million, respectively, an increase of 34% and 54%, respectively, from Q3 2020. Strategic Partnerships and Other revenue came in at $17.6 million, a decrease of 3% from Q3 2020.</p>\n<p>Create Solutions and Operate Solutions came out to be 29% and 65% of revenue, respectively. So, Unity's largest revenue contributor, Operate, continues to be the fastest-growing part of the company.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fad425cba495be9798d090c89a6fd68a\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"189\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Unity Software Q3 2021 Earnings Announcement</span></p>\n<p>Unity Q3 GAAP gross profit came in at 222.81 million with gross margins of 78%, up from 76% last year. Unity Q3 non-GAAP gross profit came in at $231.56 million with gross margins of 81%, up from 79% last year. CFO Luis Visoso indicated last quarter that the company has confidence that gross margins can be sustained above 70% over the long term.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/92d493a9cd9c53b5cedce2dcaddb00c1\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"417\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Last quarter, Unity's management mentioned on the earnings call that the company will continue to invest heavily on R&amp;D and that can be seen this quarter with GAAP R&amp;D expenses coming in at $178.41, up 53% over the year-ago period. GAAP R&amp;D as a percentage of revenues was 62% opposed to 58% in the year-ago period. Non-GAAP R&amp;D was $118.18 million, up 47% over the year-ago period. Non-GAAP R&amp;D as a percentage of revenue was 41% opposed to 40% over the year-ago period.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d6ba117f06cc0e2aae0ea40114ce73b\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"433\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/87da53ec6ad75e2595a88296801d3b86\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"467\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Part of the reason that investors can sometimes act skittish toward Unity Software is that the company, in the near term, is in heavy investment mode, while at the same time, the company's ability to generate excess returns on invested capital is more over the long-term. During times when investment sentiment is \"Risk Off\", the market is not very often kind to stocks that fit this profile, which is why the company has essentially flatlined this year, despite \"beat &amp; raise\" quarters and the excitement of the metaverse ahead.</p>\n<p>Currently, Unity is producing an operating loss both on a GAAP and non-GAAP basis. Unity Q3 GAAP loss from operations was $126.75 million with operating margins of -44%.</p>\n<p>Unity Q3 non-GAAP loss from operations was $12 million with operating margins of -4%.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/24ffaf2e45b47a3204d19936190808cd\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"433\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Unity Q3 non-GAAP EPS of -$0.06 beat analyst estimates by $0.01; GAAP EPS of -$0.41 missed analyst estimates by $0.05.</p>\n<p><b>Unity's Recent Business Performance</b></p>\n<p>Dollar-Based Net Expansion Rate (DBNER): This is a critical metric to track for software companies that operate in the cloud. In an article titled,Why I Like High DBNERs, it mentions that companies that have consistently high DBNERs will grow revenues faster than similar businesses with a lower DBNERs, while also experiencing significant stock price appreciation.</p>\n<p>The DBNER metric can also help investors analyze a company's competitive moat, its pricing power, the quality of the product/service and the stickiness of the company's business. The Why I Like High DBNERs article also mentions that the author considers a DBNER over 120% as very good and a number over 130% as outstanding.</p>\n<p>Here is Unity's DBNER history:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/107d3d57fbdee98676c4cd07ffe5a5ed\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"327\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Unity Software 10-Q | Quarterly Report</span></p>\n<p>Unity has put up a DBNER of above 130% since Q3 2019. In Q3 2021, Unity put up a Dollar-based net expansion rate of 142%. This is in comparison to last year's Dollar-based net expansion rate of 144%, in the same period.</p>\n<p>Unity software has been putting up excellent DBNER over a relatively long period of time and my experience with companies that consistently put up such high DBNER numbers is that they eventually have a stock price that outperforms.</p>\n<p>Customers contributing more than $100K to revenue: This metric represents a measure of Unity's penetration of larger enterprises, which include&nbsp;AAA gaming studios&nbsp;and large organizations in industries other than gaming.</p>\n<p>Unity Software strongly focuses on this metric because it represents the segment of the company's customer base where the majority of the revenue and revenue growth comes from. No one customer accounts for more than 10% of the revenue, so Unity does not have customer concentration risks at this time. In fact, the company could be considered widely diversified.</p>\n<p>Unity has 973 customers generating more than $100,000 of revenue TTM in Q3 2021, up from 739 a year earlier, which represents 32% YoY growth. This number is also up from 888 in Q2 2021. This strong growth is a trend that Unity management expects to continue moving forward.</p>\n<p><b>Balance Sheet</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/728fa1793eee219403e86af2d187549a\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"450\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Unity ended Q3 with approximately $1.28 billion in cash, cash equivalents, restricted cash and short-term investments. Unity has no long-term debt and 357.70 million in payables and accrued expenses. Unity has a very good balance sheet and can support all of its growth initiatives.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/00bb6a0f470c1d00ea4db96579bb8b8d\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"417\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Free cash flow in Q3 was $34 million, which brought the total free cash flow through the first 9 months of 2021 to -$100 million. This number includes around $50 million in charges from a lease dispute that was recorded in Q2. Management expects Unity to break even on a free cash flow basis sometime within FY2023.</p>\n<p><b>Company Guidance</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6b75634c25128559eed14279e65f6166\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"113\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Unity Software Q3 2021 Earnings Announcement</span></p>\n<p>Unity Software CFO Luis Felipe Visoso stated during the conference call that Unity entered Q4 with very good momentum in the business. He projected Q4 revenues of $285 to $290 million, representing 29% to 32% year-on-year growth.</p>\n<p>The company is raising full year guidance for the second time this year to $1.08 billion to $1.085 billion, representing 40% year-over-year growth. This represents an increase of $25 million on the high side of the range from previous guidance in Q2. The original revenue guidance given in Q1 was for $1.000 billion to $1.015 billion.</p>\n<p>Unity Q4 non-GAAP operating loss from operations is projected to be between $20 million to $25 million and between $59 million to $64 million for the full year.</p>\n<p><b>The Weta Digital Acquisition</b></p>\n<p>On November 09, after the bell, Unity surprised investors by announcing the very interesting acquisition of Weta Digital's tools, pipeline, and engineering talent for $1.62 billion. The tools being purchased were responsible for things like bringing Gollum to life in&nbsp;<i>The Lord of the Rings</i>&nbsp;films among&nbsp;many other movies. Anyone that has ever seen the visual effects in movies like&nbsp;Avatar&nbsp;understands that Weta's tools are very top of the line.</p>\n<p>But what is the reason behind Unity making this acquisition?</p>\n<p>Well, this acquisition is a bid by Unity to close the&nbsp;VFX&nbsp;quality gap with the&nbsp;Unreal Engine&nbsp;from Epic Games (Private). Unity has always been known as creating a very versatile engine that is relatively easy to use and this might be the reason it has become a favorite among mobile developers. However, the Unreal engine is perceived to have better visual effects which might be the reason that developers making more expensive&nbsp;Triple-A games, tend to gravitate towards Unreal. With the Weta Digital tools acquisition, Unity should become a lot more competitive with Unreal in gaining developers producing Triple-A gaming titles.</p>\n<p>Until this acquisition, Weta's 3D tools were used exclusively in-house at division within the company called Weta VFX, which consists of 1,700 visual artists that are directly responsible for creating the visual effects in many different popular movies. Weta VFX will eventually be renamed WetaFX and will become an independent studio that will license its tools from Unity.</p>\n<p>Weta Digital will become part of Unity Create Solutions and Create Solutions will gain around 275 engineers, a cloud-based platform and a collection of tools that are able to create all different types of special 3D effects. Unity will take Weta's tools and begin making them available to a wide variety of artists and creators throughout the film industry, the gaming industry, the internet, and also into other industries such as automotive, architecture and e-commerce.</p>\n<p>On the earnings call, Unity management indicated that they plan on making a cloud-based version of Weta Digital to widen the access for millions of consumers who will be able to generate high-quality 3D content every day on different social media, gaming platforms and ultimately in \"metaverse\" worlds. The average price target is $166.76 with a high forecast of $194.00 and a low forecast of $85.00. Essentially, Unity Software investors are betting that newer technologies will give Unity massive upside beyond the company's gaming development platform.\nAs I write this, Unity currently sells at sales multiple of approximately 38, which is above the median valuation of 31.06 but below the maximum valuation of 54 since Unity came public.\nData by YCharts\nThe current market is in a mostly \"Risk-Off\" state because of worries over supply chain disruptions, inflation and a bearish Federal Reserve and Unity doesn't have the profile of a stock that will do well when the market wants to avoid more speculative investments.\nUnity currently doesn't have any near-term catalysts to send the stock substantially higher over the next year, while at the same time the company is investing heavily in R&D and taking operating losses. Consistent profitability for Unity is more likely to take place 3 to 5 years out, rather than over the next year.\nWhy Buy Unity?\nThe world appears to be in the beginning stages of adoption of technologies such as AR/VR, RT3D, Digital Twins, and the metaverse, which are all technologies that are related and overlap with each other. All of the above opportunities are potentially massive opportunities. The metaverse has been estimated by Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) to be an $8 trillion opportunity, while Matthew Ball, CEO of Venture Capital firm Epyllion, believes that the metaverse economy could value between $10-30 trillion in the next 10 to 15 years. Nvidia's (NASDAQ:NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang thinks that the metaverse economy could one day even be far bigger than that of the real-world economy.\nRecently, Facebook renamed itself to Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:FB), which could be a signal that the era of the metaverse is at the beginning stages. Through both the Facebook and Instagram platform, Mark Zuckerberg likely has enough data on consumer preferences to accurately gauge possible consumer adoption of such concepts as the metaverse. I don't think the decision to rebrand Facebook into Meta Platforms was made lightly. Zuckerberg has likely seen enough data indicating that the world is ready for VR platforms like Oculus and is also ready for concepts such as the metaverse.\nWhat makes many investors very excited is that while competition like the Unreal Engine provides fairly stiff competition in gaming, Unity is already beginning to dominate the content on emerging AR platforms with 90% share on Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) HoloLens and 90% of Samsung (Grey Market:OTC:SSNLF) Gear VR content. This gives Unity an excellent start at becoming a major player in the buildout of many of the economies that will grow around the metaverse and many other VR/AR applications.\nInvestors are already increasingly interested in companies that might be involved in the build-out of the metaverse and Unity is no exception. After the Facebook rebranding announcement on October 28, Unity received a temporary bump in stock price over the next several weeks, rising from a closing price of $144.08 on October 28 to a November 18 closing price of $201.12. So, investors need to be aware that the stock price can move on any type of news concerning the buildout or adoption of the metaverse.\nHowever, concepts like the metaverse and AR/VR, might take at least ten years to play out. While positive mentions of the metaverse might temporarily goose the company's stock, back in the real-world investors are very concerned about things like inflation and it didn't take long for the metaverse balloon to pop, as today the stock trades below where it was trading before the Meta Platforms announcement was first made. Investors need to realize that it might take at least 3 to 5 years before the metaverse and AR/VR really begins to move the needle in positively affecting Unity Software's fundamentals. Therefore, only long-term investors should buy Unity Software's stock.\nWhy Investors Should Avoid Unity\nInvestors looking for short-term gains over the next year should probably avoid Unity Software's stock, as there is substantial downside risk in the near term because of poor investor sentiment toward stocks like Unity. The market is most definitely in a \"Risk-Off\" mood and has little patience for highly valued stocks that are producing an operating loss. The stock is likely to be extremely volatile over the next year. Unity could soar on some analyst positive commentary of the Metaverse and just as easily the next day sink on news of an interest rate hike. Investors that are risk-averse and are overly worried by volatility should avoid buying Unity.\nSecondarily, while the TAM of things like the metaverse and AR/VR might be enormous, adoption could be slow and not be accomplished very easily. According to Morgan Stanley Analyst Brian Nowak, actually getting people to use a metaverse could be a major hurdle. This Business Insider article highlights the numerous problems that the metaverse could encounter such as privacy and whether the metaverse could actually provide value-add solutions for consumer pain points. So, investors can't expect a lot of bang for the buck in the near term from concepts like the metaverse, despite all of the hype in the news media about it.\nUnity Software Q3 2021 Earnings Results\nUnity Software announced earnings after the bell on November 9th and in a knee-jerk reaction the stock dropped sharply after hours,down at least 9%, likely for the reason that the stock had a huge runup into earnings on the back of Facebook's Meta Platforms announcement and some investors likely wanted to take profits.\nUnity opened on November 10th down 7% from the previous day's close but rapidly ran up after investors really began assessing the company's \"beat and raise\" quarter and the company's acquisition of Weta Digital. Unity's stock actually ended up 3% over the previous day's close. Investors could not really ignore that Unity really had a great quarter.\nUnity total Q3 revenues were up 43% year-over-year to $286.3 million, exceeding company expectations of revenues in the $260 to $265 million range. Unity's revenues also beat consensus analyst expectations of $266 million.\nData by YCharts\nUnity Software has three revenue sources named Create, Operate and Strategic Partnerships in which I explained what each segment does in my last article on Unity. Create Solutions and Operate Solutions revenue were $83.7 million and $185.0 million, respectively, an increase of 34% and 54%, respectively, from Q3 2020. Strategic Partnerships and Other revenue came in at $17.6 million, a decrease of 3% from Q3 2020.\nCreate Solutions and Operate Solutions came out to be 29% and 65% of revenue, respectively. So, Unity's largest revenue contributor, Operate, continues to be the fastest-growing part of the company.\nSource: Unity Software Q3 2021 Earnings Announcement\nUnity Q3 GAAP gross profit came in at 222.81 million with gross margins of 78%, up from 76% last year. Unity Q3 non-GAAP gross profit came in at $231.56 million with gross margins of 81%, up from 79% last year. CFO Luis Visoso indicated last quarter that the company has confidence that gross margins can be sustained above 70% over the long term.\nData by YCharts\nLast quarter, Unity's management mentioned on the earnings call that the company will continue to invest heavily on R&D and that can be seen this quarter with GAAP R&D expenses coming in at $178.41, up 53% over the year-ago period. GAAP R&D as a percentage of revenues was 62% opposed to 58% in the year-ago period. Non-GAAP R&D was $118.18 million, up 47% over the year-ago period. Non-GAAP R&D as a percentage of revenue was 41% opposed to 40% over the year-ago period.\nData by YCharts\nData by YCharts\nPart of the reason that investors can sometimes act skittish toward Unity Software is that the company, in the near term, is in heavy investment mode, while at the same time, the company's ability to generate excess returns on invested capital is more over the long-term. During times when investment sentiment is \"Risk Off\", the market is not very often kind to stocks that fit this profile, which is why the company has essentially flatlined this year, despite \"beat & raise\" quarters and the excitement of the metaverse ahead.\nCurrently, Unity is producing an operating loss both on a GAAP and non-GAAP basis. Unity Q3 GAAP loss from operations was $126.75 million with operating margins of -44%.\nUnity Q3 non-GAAP loss from operations was $12 million with operating margins of -4%.\nData by YCharts\nUnity Q3 non-GAAP EPS of -$0.06 beat analyst estimates by $0.01; GAAP EPS of -$0.41 missed analyst estimates by $0.05.\nUnity's Recent Business Performance\nDollar-Based Net Expansion Rate (DBNER): This is a critical metric to track for software companies that operate in the cloud. In an article titled,Why I Like High DBNERs, it mentions that companies that have consistently high DBNERs will grow revenues faster than similar businesses with a lower DBNERs, while also experiencing significant stock price appreciation.\nThe DBNER metric can also help investors analyze a company's competitive moat, its pricing power, the quality of the product/service and the stickiness of the company's business. The Why I Like High DBNERs article also mentions that the author considers a DBNER over 120% as very good and a number over 130% as outstanding.\nHere is Unity's DBNER history:\nSource: Unity Software 10-Q | Quarterly Report\nUnity has put up a DBNER of above 130% since Q3 2019. In Q3 2021, Unity put up a Dollar-based net expansion rate of 142%. This is in comparison to last year's Dollar-based net expansion rate of 144%, in the same period.\nUnity software has been putting up excellent DBNER over a relatively long period of time and my experience with companies that consistently put up such high DBNER numbers is that they eventually have a stock price that outperforms.\nCustomers contributing more than $100K to revenue: This metric represents a measure of Unity's penetration of larger enterprises, which include AAA gaming studios and large organizations in industries other than gaming.\nUnity Software strongly focuses on this metric because it represents the segment of the company's customer base where the majority of the revenue and revenue growth comes from. No one customer accounts for more than 10% of the revenue, so Unity does not have customer concentration risks at this time. In fact, the company could be considered widely diversified.\nUnity has 973 customers generating more than $100,000 of revenue TTM in Q3 2021, up from 739 a year earlier, which represents 32% YoY growth. This number is also up from 888 in Q2 2021. This strong growth is a trend that Unity management expects to continue moving forward.\nBalance Sheet\nData by YCharts\nUnity ended Q3 with approximately $1.28 billion in cash, cash equivalents, restricted cash and short-term investments. Unity has no long-term debt and 357.70 million in payables and accrued expenses. Unity has a very good balance sheet and can support all of its growth initiatives.\nData by YCharts\nFree cash flow in Q3 was $34 million, which brought the total free cash flow through the first 9 months of 2021 to -$100 million. This number includes around $50 million in charges from a lease dispute that was recorded in Q2. Management expects Unity to break even on a free cash flow basis sometime within FY2023.\nCompany Guidance\nSource: Unity Software Q3 2021 Earnings Announcement\nUnity Software CFO Luis Felipe Visoso stated during the conference call that Unity entered Q4 with very good momentum in the business. He projected Q4 revenues of $285 to $290 million, representing 29% to 32% year-on-year growth.\nThe company is raising full year guidance for the second time this year to $1.08 billion to $1.085 billion, representing 40% year-over-year growth. This represents an increase of $25 million on the high side of the range from previous guidance in Q2. The original revenue guidance given in Q1 was for $1.000 billion to $1.015 billion.\nUnity Q4 non-GAAP operating loss from operations is projected to be between $20 million to $25 million and between $59 million to $64 million for the full year.\nThe Weta Digital Acquisition\nOn November 09, after the bell, Unity surprised investors by announcing the very interesting acquisition of Weta Digital's tools, pipeline, and engineering talent for $1.62 billion. The tools being purchased were responsible for things like bringing Gollum to life in The Lord of the Rings films among many other movies. Anyone that has ever seen the visual effects in movies like Avatar understands that Weta's tools are very top of the line.\nBut what is the reason behind Unity making this acquisition?\nWell, this acquisition is a bid by Unity to close the VFX quality gap with the Unreal Engine from Epic Games (Private). Unity has always been known as creating a very versatile engine that is relatively easy to use and this might be the reason it has become a favorite among mobile developers. However, the Unreal engine is perceived to have better visual effects which might be the reason that developers making more expensive Triple-A games, tend to gravitate towards Unreal. With the Weta Digital tools acquisition, Unity should become a lot more competitive with Unreal in gaining developers producing Triple-A gaming titles.\nUntil this acquisition, Weta's 3D tools were used exclusively in-house at division within the company called Weta VFX, which consists of 1,700 visual artists that are directly responsible for creating the visual effects in many different popular movies. Weta VFX will eventually be renamed WetaFX and will become an independent studio that will license its tools from Unity.\nWeta Digital will become part of Unity Create Solutions and Create Solutions will gain around 275 engineers, a cloud-based platform and a collection of tools that are able to create all different types of special 3D effects. Unity will take Weta's tools and begin making them available to a wide variety of artists and creators throughout the film industry, the gaming industry, the internet, and also into other industries such as automotive, architecture and e-commerce.\nOn the earnings call, Unity management indicated that they plan on making a cloud-based version of Weta Digital to widen the access for millions of consumers who will be able to generate high-quality 3D content every day on different social media, gaming platforms and ultimately in \"metaverse\" worlds.
