Could this long-rumored device help Facebook challenge <b>Apple</b> (NASDAQ:AAPL) in the smartwatch market?</p>\n<h2>Why is Facebook developing a smartwatch?</h2>\n<p>Facebook generated 97% of its revenue from ads last quarter. The remaining 3% came from its \"other\" businesses, which include its Oculus virtual reality (VR) headsets and Portal smart screens. It might initially seem odd for Facebook to add a smartwatch to that lineup, but it would actually complement its previous hardware strategies.</p>\n<p>Facebook's strongest hardware business is its lineup of Oculus VR headsets. It could ship at least three million Oculus Quest 2 headsets this year, according to SuperData. That would make the stand-alone VR headset, which doesn't require a PC or phone, the clear leader of its niche market.</p>\n<p>Looking beyond VR devices, Facebook is developing augmented reality (AR) glasses that will use similar controls as its Oculus headsets. It also acquired CTRL-Labs, which is developing a wristband that can use brain signals to control computers, in late 2019. In theory, CTRL-Labs' technology could eventually enable users to control VR and AR devices with \"mind-reading\" wristbands instead of controllers in the future.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Facebook's Portal devices haven't gained much momentum against <b>Amazon</b> (NASDAQ:AMZN) or <b>Alphabet</b>'s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) Google in the smart screen market. That failure likely dashed Facebook's hopes of expanding its social networking platforms beyond PCs and phones and into connected homes.</p>\n<p>When you put all those pieces together, you'll realize Facebook's smartwatch could be used to enhance control of its VR and AR devices, or to expand its social networks into the Internet of Things (IoT) and perhaps succeed where the Portal failed. Facebook could also eventually upgrade its watches with CTRL-Labs' technologies and enable users to control other IoT devices with their minds.</p>\n<h2>But let's not get ahead of ourselves... yet</h2>\n<p>Facebook has reportedly spent about $1 billion on the development of its smartwatch over the past few years, but it only initially plans to ship volumes in the low six figures.</p>\n<p>That would make Facebook a tiny smartwatch maker compared to <b>Apple</b> (NASDAQ:AAPL), which grew its Apple Watch shipments 19% to 33.9 million in 2020, according to Counterpoint Research. Apple ended the year with a whopping 40% share of the global smartwatch market.</p>\n<p>Facebook likely realizes its smartwatch will face the same three problems that plagued the Portal: a deep distrust of Facebook's brand, privacy concerns, and its late arrival into a saturated market. Google also encountered similar criticisms after its recent takeover of Fitbit.</p>\n<p>Facebook reportedly plans to launch its smartwatch next summer for about $400. But a lot could happen within the next year, and new smartwatches -- including a new version of the Apple Watch -- could easily steal Facebook's thunder. A smartwatch with two cameras could also be considered complicated and redundant, especially when smartphones and action cameras serve the same purposes.</p>\n<h2>The key takeaways</h2>\n<p>The global smartwatch market could still grow from $59 billion this year to nearly $100 billion in 2025, according to Research and Markets. That's great news for Apple, but it also suggests the market might still be big enough for newcomers like Facebook to gain a foothold.</p>\n<p>But investors should take all these rumors with a grain of salt until Facebook actually makes an official announcement. Since Tesla originally announced its Bitcoin investment on Feb.&nbsp;8, Tesla shares are down 20.8% and Bitcoin prices are up 17.6%.</p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Colas said Musk is now at a critical point as a disruptor in which he must choose to follow a similar path to either&nbsp;<b>Ford Motor Company</b>&nbsp;(NYSE:F) founder Henry Ford or&nbsp;<b>Amazon.com, Inc.</b>&nbsp;(NASDAQ:AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos.</p>\n<p>Ford’s long-term path to disruption and growth was to focus almost exclusively on producing high volumes of affordable cars and reinvesting the profits back into his business, Colas said.</p>\n<p>Bezos, however, grew Amazon to its current $1.7 trillion valuation by choosing to branch Amazon out&nbsp;from e-commerce and into cloud services.</p>\n<p><b>Two Paths Forward:</b>Given Tesla’s auto business is still in the early stages of its growth story, Colas said Musk must choose to either focus all Tesla’s resources on ramping up production and selling autonomous vehicle services or he must come up with a new idea that will expand the current Tesla bull thesis.</p>\n<p>“Tesla as a stock is stuck here (or lower) until either 1) a Model 3 can drive autonomously and safely in a dense urban area such as would be applicable to ride sharing or 2) Musk comes up with his version of Amazon Web Services, a big scalable idea that leverages some core competency or business attribute,” Colas said.</p>\n<p>Colas said investing Tesla’s cash in Bitcoin and then promoting it to other companies as a way to diversify balance sheet liquidity could potentially be a growth-driving idea for Tesla, but it’s too early to tell at this point if that’s the direction Musk is looking to go.</p>\n<p><b>Benzinga’s Take:</b>The market obviously doesn’t see Bitcoin as a game-changer for Tesla given the stock’s underperformance in recent months. That made Monday the biggest day for digital sales so far this year, and Tuesday the second-biggest day, Adobe added.\nLast holiday shopping season, sales during Cyber Monday amounted to about $10.9 billion, marking the largest U.S. online shopping day on record.\n“There’s a pent up demand for online shopping as consumers look forward to a return to normalcy,” said Taylor Schreiner, director of Adobe Digital insights. “The halo effect of Prime Day also played a significant role, giving both large and small online retailers significant revenue lifts.”\nBusinesses including Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Kohl’s have been offering competing markdowns this week.\nAdobe said that retailers that bring in more than $1 billion in revenue each year reported a 29% increase in e-commerce sales during Prime Day compared with an average June day, while smaller retailers doing less than $10 million in annual revenue saw a 21% lift.\nAdobe also found that discount levels were fairly consistent on Monday and Tuesday, with toys marked down by 12%, on average, and appliances discounted by 5%.
