Amazon&#39;s positive earnings capped a run of mixed big-tech numbers, with the Nasdaq recovering much of its losses from the previous session and all three benchmarks ending the week in positive territory.</p><p>Results from megacap growth stocks have dictated market moves this week, as investors seek out tangible data to support sky-high valuations.</p><p>Amazon.com Inc jumped 13.5% after reporting robust earnings in the holiday quarter. The gain expanded its market capitalization by around $190 billion, the largest ever single-day increase in value of a U.S. company.</p><p>This came a day after Facebook-owner <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Meta Platforms</a> Inc&#39;s disappointing results shook markets and wiped more than $200 billion off its valuation, the deepest loss of stock market value in history by a U.S. company.</p><p>&#34;These are eye-watering, stomach churning moves normally associated with penny stocks, and yet they are happening in companies with billion-dollar market caps,&#34; said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK.</p><p>Despite the earnings-driven whiplash in technology stocks, all three major stock indexes ended their first week of February higher, with the indexes posting their second week of gains in a row.</p><p>While Meta lost another 0.3% on Friday, other social media companies which had been dragged down with the Facebook owner rebounded strongly as they posted estimate-beating earnings of their own.</p><p>Among them was <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNAP\">Snap Inc</a> , surging 58.8% after reporting better-than-expected fourth-quarter user growth and outlook.</p><p>Pinterest Inc also jumped 11.2% after its quarterly revenue beat estimates as retailers splurged on advertising during the holiday quarter.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 21.42 points, or 0.06%, to 35,089.74, the S&amp;P 500 gained 23.09 points, or 0.52%, to 4,500.53 and the Nasdaq Composite added 219.19 points, or 1.58%, to 14,098.01.</p><p>Among the major S&amp;P 500 sectors which advanced, energy stocks hit their highest since 2018 as crude prices touched a seven-year peak.</p><p>Hess Corp    was the largest gainer in the sector, jumping 4% to its highest close since September 2014. Occidental Petroleum Corp gained 2%, with its shares ending at levels last seen in February 2020.</p><p>Consumer discretionary was the leading sector though, up 3.7% as it was bolstered by Amazon&#39;s performance. The tech behemoth&#39;s gains helped alleviate the drag of Ford Motor Co, which slumped 9.7% after the automaker posted disappointing quarterly numbers.</p><p>The Labor Department&#39;s closely watched employment report showed nonfarm payrolls increased by 467,000 jobs last month, compared with the 150,000 jobs addition forecast by economists polled by Reuters.</p><p>The data for December was revised higher to show 510,000 jobs created, instead of the previously reported 199,000.</p><p>Fears of faster-than-expected rate hikes to curb a surge in inflation have haunted markets since the beginning of the year, with growth stocks such as technology feeling the brunt of that as investors pivot towards current cash flow from betting on future expectations.</p><p>&#34;A lot of the high-valuation stuff is going to continue to have trouble and it&#39;s already gotten smacked down a lot,&#34; said Louis Ricci, head of trading at Emles Advisors.</p><p>&#34;To us, this jobs report was affirmation that, yes, stocks are going to be jittery and there&#39;s going to be a lot of volatility.&#34;</p><p>However, the rate hike prospect has boosted U.S. Treasuries, with yields on the 10-year benchmark hitting their highest levels since December 2019, in the wake of the payrolls data. The gain expanded its market capitalization by around $190 billion, the largest ever single-day increase in value of a U.S. company.</p><p>This came a day after Facebook-owner <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Meta Platforms</a> Inc&#39;s disappointing results shook markets and wiped more than $200 billion off its valuation, the deepest loss of stock market value in history by a U.S. company.</p><p>&#34;These are eye-watering, stomach churning moves normally associated with penny stocks, and yet they are happening in companies with billion-dollar market caps,&#34; said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK.</p><p>Despite the earnings-driven whiplash in technology stocks, all three major stock indexes ended their first week of February higher, with the indexes posting their second week of gains in a row.</p><p>While Meta lost another 0.3% on Friday, other social media companies which had been dragged down with the Facebook owner rebounded strongly as they posted estimate-beating earnings of their own.</p><p>Among them was <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNAP\">Snap Inc</a> , surging 58.8% after reporting better-than-expected fourth-quarter user growth and outlook.</p><p>Pinterest Inc also jumped 11.2% after its quarterly revenue beat estimates as retailers splurged on advertising during the holiday quarter.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 21.42 points, or 0.06%, to 35,089.74, the S&amp;P 500 gained 23.09 points, or 0.52%, to 4,500.53 and the Nasdaq Composite added 219.19 points, or 1.58%, to 14,098.01.</p><p>Among the major S&amp;P 500 sectors which advanced, energy stocks hit their highest since 2018 as crude prices touched a seven-year peak.</p><p>Hess Corp    was the largest gainer in the sector, jumping 4% to its highest close since September 2014. The Malta, N.Y.-based silicon wafer foundry -- known as a fabrication plant, or \"fab,\" in industry parlance -- debuted its stock on the Nasdaq in late October. Wall Street analysts just started coverage of the stock last week.</p>\n<p>GlobalFoundries CEO on IPO: 'We have to accelerate our capacity'</p>\n<p>Third-party fabs like GlobalFoundries make silicon wafers for the majority of chip makers that do not have their own fabs -- companies like Apple Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">$(AAPL)$</a> and Nvidia Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NVDA\">$(NVDA)$</a>, for example. GlobalFoundries bills itself as the third largest foundry in the world based on external sales.</p>\n<p>While the world is still working its way through a global chip shortage, and fabs still have long back orders from customers, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the standout aspects of GlobalFoundries is that it services chip makers that are not considered cutting edge but are essential all the same, as evidenced in shortages of inexpensive chips that are crucial for the production of autos.</p>\n<p>\"GlobalFoundries has carved out a niche in the fast-growing foundry market by focusing on older, trailing-edge technology that has been neglected by [Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (2330.TW)], the largest foundry company,\" Citi Research analyst Christopher Danley, who has a buy rating and a $75 price target, wrote in a note about the company.</p>\n<p>\"In addition, GlobalFoundries has proprietary wireless technology that has resulted in strong share gains with leading wireless companies such as Qualcomm <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QCOM\">$(QCOM)$</a>, Broadcom <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AVGO\">$(AVGO)$</a>, and Qorvo <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QRVO\">$(QRVO)$</a>,\" he said.</p>\n<p>Citi's Danley also sees GlobalFoundries as being a \"major beneficiary from the industrywide shortages.\"</p>\n<p>What to expect</p>\n<p>Earnings: Of six analysts surveyed by FactSet, GlobalFoundries on average is expected to post a loss of a penny a share. A month ago, Thomas Caulfield, GlobalFoundries chief executive, forecast a profit of about $290 million to $300 million for the September-ending quarter. Of the seven analysts polled by FactSet, the Street expects a loss of $19.9 million.</p>\n<p>Revenue: Wall Street expects revenue of $1.7 billion from GlobalFoundries, according to nine analysts polled by FactSet. Caulfield forecast revenue of about $1.7 billion.</p>\n<p>Stock movement: Since the company's trading debut on Oct. 28, shares have surged 50% from their $47 IPO pricing. Over that same period, the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IPO\">Renaissance IPO ETF</a> <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IPO.UK\">$(IPO.UK)$</a> has declined 5%, the PHLX Semiconductor Index has risen 13%, the S&amp;P 500 index has advanced 2%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index has risen 2%.</p>\n<p>What analysts are saying</p>\n<p>Jefferies analyst Mark Lipacis, who has a buy rating and a $87 price target, also touched upon GlobalFoundries' focus on more practical chips.</p>\n<p>He called the fab \"the leading trailing-node, analog/mixed-signal foundry benefiting from IoT demand drivers that will translate to unit demand 10x the size of cellphones, and a shift of its customers to a fab-lite model.\"</p>\n<p>\"These dynamics have led to unprecedented levels of visibility and pricing power, and as a result, we expect GFS to maintain a premium valuation multiple,\" Lipacis said.</p>\n<p>The analyst notes that the fab's capacity is \"sold out for 2022, 94% sold out for 2023, and roughly 77% of their 2022 and 2023 sales (approx. $10 billion) are secured by long-term agreements.\"</p>\n<p>Cowen analyst Krish Sankar, who has an outperform rating and a $80 price target, said GlobalFoundries strong backlog of single-source designs could double the company's gross margins through 2025 and drive a 40% earnings-per-share compound annual growth rate.</p>\n<p>\"As a U.S. DoD Trusted Foundry, a large presence in U.S., EU, and Singapore offers geographic diversity and makes it a unique play on global (ex-Greater China) tech investment themes,\" Sankar added.</p>\n<p>Of the 16 analysts who initiated coverage just recently, 13 have buy ratings, two have hold ratings, and one has a sell rating, according to FactSet. The two states account for more than 30% of all COVID-19 deaths since March 1.</p>\n<p><b>Fed taper talk</b></p>\n<p>Markets are fixatedon the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee’s Sept. 21-22 meeting, where Fed officials facing the prospect of removing accommodations that have propped markets up since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S., even as the economic rebound looks uneven.</p>\n<p>The Fed has been buying $80 billion of Treasurys and $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities each month since last June to keep long-term interest rates low and bolster demand.
