This week, the stock market can’t seem to","content":"
Just last Friday, the S&P 500 had closed at a record high. This week, the stock market can’t seem to find its footing, with the major indexes slumping again Tuesday.
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 256.33 points, or 0.8%, the S&P 500 fell 0.7%, and the Nasdaq Composite finished off 0.9%.
\n
It’s been a while since the stock market had a meaningful drop, and this one may not actually qualify. This was the S&P 500’s largest drop since just March 23, so the current pullback may not be worth getting excited about. Then again, it could be the start of something bigger. Here are four reasons markets fell today.
\n
Covid Cases are rising globally. The seven-day average hit 628,035 on April 10, up 63% from 384346 on Feb. 28. Global cases have topped 142 million, and India recently reported more than 250,000 cases on its own. The continued spread threatens to overwhelm the positive narrative about vaccines in the U.S. Reports that India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the country and that a full lockdown could but put in place has only spooked the market further.
\n
The vaccine narrative is weakening. The market opened lower this morning, but the drop really accelerated when the European Medicines Agency announced that it had found a possible link to very rare cases of blood clots in users of Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ) vaccine, and said a warning should be added. That overwhelmed its conclusion that the ‘overall benefit-risk remains positive’ for the vaccine because it could mean fewer people get vaccinated. Even before the latest announcement, confidence was eroding. “It doesn’t seem likely that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is going to completely disappear anytime soon,” JPMorgan strategists concluded in a report released Tuesday. “The lack of a vaccine for those aged under 18 years, the less than 100% take-up of vaccines, the less than 100% efficacy of vaccines and the development of variants mean that the prevalence of infection will remain for a long time, even if at a low level.”
\n
The reopening narrative is weakening. United Airlines (UAL) earnings were worse than expected. The U.S. State Department put 80% of the world’s nations on a “do not travel” list due to high levels of Covid. And the worst performing stocks are part of the reopening trade. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) closed down 4.4%, American Airlines (AAL) slid 5.5%, Marriott International (MAR) fell 4%, Devon Energy (DVN) slumped 4.8%, and Zions Bancorp (ZION) has tumbled 6.5%. That pretty much says it all right there.
\n
Investors are questioning the economic recovery. At this point, everyone knows that the economic recovery is going to be strong. When even the International Monetary Fund realizes that’s the case, you know it’s consensus. Now, the market is wrestling with whether growth has peaked or if there’s further acceleration ahead. With little economic data to shift the narrative this week, investors are asking “what have you done for me lately.”
\n
None of this means a bear market is ahead of us, and just because investors are embracing a narrative, doesn’t mean that’s how the future plays out. It is the future, after all. But the market is always trying to adjust to greater risk after a massive rally. Perhaps a little more volatility is warranted.
","source":"lsy1610680873436","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Is the Stock Market Down Today? It's why, even though we are enjoying a beautiful spring week, Goldman notes that single stock options trading activity is elevated relative to historical levels. To wit, daily options volumes are up 70% in April, up from YTD lows of $2.4bn on 30-Mar.

In total, across single stocks, $544BN of options are set to expiry today, including $305BN calls. As such, today’s expiry could be important for stocks with large open interest in at-the-money(ATM) options, as market makers delta-hedging their unusually large options portfolios will be active. This flow is likely to dampen volatility in some names while exacerbating stock price moves in others.

How to trade this?

As Goldman's Vishal Vivek writes, at major expirations, options traders track situations wherea large amount of open interest is set to expire. In situations where there is a significant amount of expiring open interest in at-the-money strikes (strike prices at or very near the current stockprice), delta-hedging activity can impact the underlying stock’s trading that day. If market makers or other options traders who delta-hedge their positions are net long ATM options, expiration-related flow could have the effect of dampening stock price movements, causing the stock price to settle near the strike with large open interest. This situation is often referred to as a “pin” and can be an ideal situation fora large investor trying to enter/exit a stock position. Alternatively, if delta-hedgers are net short ATM options (have a “negative gamma” position), their hedging activity could exacerbate stock price moves.

What that means it expiration-related trades may cause trading activity to aggressively pick up for stocks with a significant amount of ATM open interest.

So to help traders looking to hop on for daytrading opportunities, here is a table identifying possible focus stocks with large ATM open interest expiring today, which is compared to the average daily volume of the underlying stocks. As Goldman puts it, \"expiration-related activity is likely to have more of an impact if the open interest represents a significant percentage of the stock’s volume.\"

Finally, for what it's worth, this morning our friends at SpotGamma write that this has been a rather strange OPEX cycle, \"with a consistent almost mechanical bid pushing markets higher. We’ve not seen the Call Wall “breached” this many times before, but there are other aberrations that we’ve mentioned in previous notes – like net put sales. We’ve got some theories on this we are posting in a longer form piece.\"

According to SG, because implied volatility has now compressed (ie VIX at new lows) there is now more potential for “long term” volatility. Recall how as of late any sharp, violent drop in markets was bought so quickly (see chart below). These bursts lower coincided with record VIX spikes, but a reflective snap-back bid would bring a market recovery of equal force as the VIX (i.e. implied volatility) reversed.

And one other curious observation from SpotGamma:

When implied volatility is very high, its very sensitive to market moves and also signaling that markets are expecting more large moves ahead. As soon as markets would pause or catch a support level, that implied volatility would quickly reverse lower. We often think of this analogy that if a shark stops swimming, it sinks ( partially true!). If the market stops dropping then Implied volatility sinks.

With this, as we often talk about, lower implied volatility (ie lower VIX) signals market makers have to buy back short hedges which fuels rallies. It's why, even though we are enjoying a beautiful spring week, Goldman notes that single stock options trading activity is elevated relative to historical levels. To wit, daily options volumes are up 70% in April, up from YTD lows of $2.4bn on 30-Mar.In total, across single stocks, $544BN of options are set to expiry today, including $305BN calls. As such, today’s expiry could be important for stocks with large open interest in at-the-money(ATM) options, as market makers delta-hedging their unusually large options portfolios will be active. This flow is likely to dampen volatility in some names while exacerbating stock price moves in others. How to trade this?As Goldman's Vishal Vivek writes, at major expirations, options traders track situations wherea large amount of open interest is set to expire. As Goldman puts it, \"expiration-related activity is likely to have more of an impact if the open interest represents a significant percentage of the stock’s volume.\"Finally, for what it's worth, this morning our friends at SpotGamma write that this has been a rather strange OPEX cycle, \"with a consistent almost mechanical bid pushing markets higher. We’ve not seen the Call Wall “breached” this many times before, but there are other aberrations that we’ve mentioned in previous notes – like net put sales. We’ve got some theories on this we are posting in a longer form piece.\"According to SG, because implied volatility has now compressed (ie VIX at new lows) there is now more potential for “long term” volatility. Recall how as of late any sharp, violent drop in markets was bought so quickly (see chart below). These bursts lower coincided with record VIX spikes, but a reflective snap-back bid would bring a market recovery of equal force as the VIX (i.e. implied volatility) reversed. And one other curious observation from SpotGamma:When implied volatility is very high, its very sensitive to market moves and also signaling that markets are expecting more large moves ahead. SG's conclusion: this current level of lower implied volatility now gives the market more downside firepower. Starting with a lower implied volatility “slows down” that responsive “snap-back” buying mechanism. Additionally, gamma is higher when IV is lower so gamma flips may have more juice.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":84,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":198649030,"gmtCreate":1620957593720,"gmtModify":1634194969781,"author":{"id":"3581732379296720","authorId":"3581732379296720","name":"kimkimlaw","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aa6b20a6b00f59b6a60ad7daab5b46d2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581732379296720","idStr":"3581732379296720"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Watching baba","listText":"Watching baba","text":"Watching baba","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/198649030","repostId":"2135766316","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":188,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":379114808,"gmtCreate":1618705825204,"gmtModify":1634291380784,"author":{"id":"3581732379296720","authorId":"3581732379296720","name":"kimkimlaw","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aa6b20a6b00f59b6a60ad7daab5b46d2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581732379296720","idStr":"3581732379296720"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Should I enter Tesla","listText":"Should I enter Tesla","text":"Should I enter Tesla","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/379114808","repostId":"2128985135","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2128985135","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1618620886,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2128985135?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-04-17 08:54","market":"fut","language":"en","title":"ARK buys another $64 mln in Coinbase shares, sells $99.5 mln of Tesla shares","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2128985135","media":"Reuters","summary":"April 16 (Reuters) - Cathie Wood’s ARK funds bought more shares of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global Inc on Friday while selling shares of electric carmaker Tesla , according to the firm's da","content":"

April 16 (Reuters) - Cathie Wood’s ARK funds bought more shares of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global Inc on Friday while selling shares of electric carmaker Tesla

, according to the firm's daily trade summary.

ARK on Friday bought 187,078 shares of Coinbase, which debuted on the Nasdaq earlier this week, in a purchase worth nearly $64 million at the day’s closing price of $342.

It sold 134,541 shares of Tesla, valued at $99.5 million at Friday's close. Now, it’s fair to point out that we’re still not out of the woods in terms of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, cases are down substantially from their peak, while the vaccine rollout has been very encouraging for previously hard-hit investments like AAL stock.

Indeed, American and its competition, such asUnited Airlines(NASDAQ:UAL) andDelta(NYSE:DAL), is experiencing a much-needed revival. It’s a similar tale for the other majors.

Multiple factors support the narrative that the worst is behind AAL stock. In this case, American generated revenue of $17.3 billion in 2020, down 62% from 2019. It’s not that the improvements aren’t happening because they are. Rather, we need to see massive, groundbreaking progress.

We’re just not there yet. And we don’t know when that improvement will occur. For this reason, I believe investors are shying away from AAL stock. Personally, you might do well following their lead.

We need to look long and hard attotal public debt as a percentage of GDP. Previously, it was hovering roughly around 103% on average. As of the fourth quarter of 2020, it’s up at 129%. That’s a staggering gap. Rather, we need to see massive, groundbreaking progress. We’re just not there yet. And we don’t know when that improvement will occur. For this reason, I believe investors are shying away from AAL stock. Personally, you might do well following their lead.We need to look long and hard attotal public debt as a percentage of GDP. Previously, it was hovering roughly around 103% on average. As of the fourth quarter of 2020, it’s up at 129%. That’s a staggering gap. Tourism dollars, though, are accretive for our economy. The thing is, who would want to visit the U.S. right now with all its myriad problems and social crises? Frankly, I’m looking to leave rather than stay.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":41,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371758216,"gmtCreate":1618974400135,"gmtModify":1634289483766,"author":{"id":"3581732379296720","authorId":"3581732379296720","name":"kimkimlaw","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aa6b20a6b00f59b6a60ad7daab5b46d2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581732379296720","idStr":"3581732379296720"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Is time to get in then ?","listText":"Is time to get in then ?","text":"Is time to get in then ?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/371758216","repostId":"1122253275","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":99,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371554732,"gmtCreate":1618962645826,"gmtModify":1634289632129,"author":{"id":"3581732379296720","authorId":"3581732379296720","name":"kimkimlaw","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aa6b20a6b00f59b6a60ad7daab5b46d2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581732379296720","idStr":"3581732379296720"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Is it a good price to have apple now?","listText":"Is it a good price to have apple now?","text":"Is it a good price to have apple now?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/371554732","repostId":"2129774840","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":92,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":139019893,"gmtCreate":1621573114512,"gmtModify":1634187957236,"author":{"id":"3581732379296720","authorId":"3581732379296720","name":"kimkimlaw","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aa6b20a6b00f59b6a60ad7daab5b46d2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3581732379296720","idStr":"3581732379296720"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"How is HUYA going ?
