Don't make these mistakes when the next one hits.","content":"
The scary thing about stock market crashes is that they can happen when you least expect them to. And while stock market crashes are normal in that they actually occur somewhat frequently, they can be terrifying for investors who aren't used to them.
\n
But the decisions you make during a market crash will dictate whether you survive it unscathed, or whether you end up taking serious losses you don't recover from for years. With that in mind, here are three moves you might seriously regret during a stock market downturn.
\n
1. Selling when investment values plunge
\n
When you buy stocks, you lock in those investments at a certain price. That price can then rise or fall on an ongoing basis.
\n
If you don't sell your stocks while their value is up, you won't make money. Similarly, if you don't sell your stocks when their values declines, you won't suffer losses. It's the latter you really need to keep in mind during a stock market crash.
\n
When investment values start to fall, it can very tempting to cash out investments in an effort to minimize the blow. But the stock market has a long history of recovering from crashes, so if you leave your portfolio alone, you'll give your stock values a chance to come back up rather than guarantee yourself losses that could've been easily avoided.
\n
2. Pausing your retirement plan contributions
\n
The point of putting money into a 401(k) or IRA isn't to just let it sit there in cash. Rather, you're supposed to invest it so it grows into a large sum over time.
\n
You may be inclined to stop funding your retirement savings during periods when the stock market is doing poorly. But that's a mistake. The money that goes into your retirement plan gets tax-advantaged treatment, whether immediately or in the future, so it pays to keep pumping cash into your account even when the stock market isn't at its strongest.
\n
3. Not adding discounted stocks to your portfolio
\n
Many people assume that buying stocks during a market crash is a bad idea. But actually, the opposite is true.
\n
During market downturns, stock values tend to fall across the board. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the companies you're interested in are actually worth less money than they were the month prior. It just means that temporarily, their share prices are down. That gives you a prime opportunity to buy quality stocks when they're less expensive.
\n
For example, if you're interested in a given company whose share prices has been hovering around $50, during a market crash, it might fall to $40. And while stock market crashes are normal in that they actually occur somewhat frequently, they can be terrifying for investors who aren't used to them.\nBut the decisions you make during a market crash will dictate whether you survive it unscathed, or whether you end up taking serious losses you don't recover from for years. With that in mind, here are three moves you might seriously regret during a stock market downturn.\n1. Selling when investment values plunge\nWhen you buy stocks, you lock in those investments at a certain price. That price can then rise or fall on an ongoing basis.\nIf you don't sell your stocks while their value is up, you won't make money. Similarly, if you don't sell your stocks when their values declines, you won't suffer losses. It's the latter you really need to keep in mind during a stock market crash.\nWhen investment values start to fall, it can very tempting to cash out investments in an effort to minimize the blow. But the stock market has a long history of recovering from crashes, so if you leave your portfolio alone, you'll give your stock values a chance to come back up rather than guarantee yourself losses that could've been easily avoided.\n2. Pausing your retirement plan contributions\nThe point of putting money into a 401(k) or IRA isn't to just let it sit there in cash. Rather, you're supposed to invest it so it grows into a large sum over time.\nYou may be inclined to stop funding your retirement savings during periods when the stock market is doing poorly. But that's a mistake. The money that goes into your retirement plan gets tax-advantaged treatment, whether immediately or in the future, so it pays to keep pumping cash into your account even when the stock market isn't at its strongest.\n3. Not adding discounted stocks to your portfolio\nMany people assume that buying stocks during a market crash is a bad idea. But actually, the opposite is true.\nDuring market downturns, stock values tend to fall across the board. But that doesn't necessarily mean that the companies you're interested in are actually worth less money than they were the month prior. It just means that temporarily, their share prices are down. That gives you a prime opportunity to buy quality stocks when they're less expensive.\nFor example, if you're interested in a given company whose share prices has been hovering around $50, during a market crash, it might fall to $40. Does that mean that from now on, shares will only be worth 40? Not at all. But if you scoop them up at $40 apiece, you'll set yourself up to profit big time when their values creeps back up to $50 or beyond.\nKnowing how to navigate a stock market crash could prevent you from making poor decisions that hurt you financially. Avoid the above mistakes the next time the market takes a turn for the worse -- you'll be much better off for it in the long run.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":178,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":848463956,"gmtCreate":1636020461940,"gmtModify":1636020462067,"author":{"id":"3580714845618733","authorId":"3580714845618733","name":"KHLuk","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3580714845618733","authorIdStr":"3580714845618733"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/848463956","repostId":"1189037300","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1189037300","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Stock Market Quotes, Business News, Financial News, Trading Ideas, and Stock Research by Professionals","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Benzinga","id":"1052270027","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d08bf7808052c0ca9deb4e944cae32aa"},"pubTimestamp":1636018960,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1189037300?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-11-04 17:42","market":"us","language":"en","title":"5 Stocks To Watch For November 4, 2021","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1189037300","media":"Benzinga","summary":"Some of the stocks that may grab investor focus today are:\n\nWall Street expects Moderna, Inc. to rep","content":"
Some of the stocks that may grab investor focus today are:
\n
\n
Wall Street expects Moderna, Inc. to report quarterly earnings at $8.95 per share on revenue of $6.45 billion before the opening bell. src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/46e56ecec91d63700b86279b0050514d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"360\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">
\n

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta GameStop, MicroVision, Sanderson Farms & more
\n
1) GameStop(GME) – The videogame retailer's stock jumped 6.8% in the premarket after it had announced it had completed a previously announced sale of 5 million common shares, raising $1.126 billion.
\n
2) MicroVision(MVIS) – MicroVision shares slid 10.8% in the premarket after the laser technology company said it would sell up to $140 million of stock \"from time to time\" and use the funds for general corporate purposes.
\n
3) Sanderson Farms(SAFM) – Sanderson Farms is exploring a possible sale, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke to The Wall Street Journal. The paper said the poultry producer has already drawn interest from suitors such as agricultural investment firm Continental Grain. The stock surged 10% in premarket action.
\n
4) Torchlight Energy Resources(TRCH) – Torchlight shares gained another 4.9% in premarket trading after a 58% surge in Monday's trading. The oil and gas producer is among the stocks getting increased social media attention on sites like Reddit and Stocktwits.
\n
5) Alphabet(GOOGL) – The European Unionhas opened a formal antitrust probeof Google's digital ad practices. Revenue also came in below estimates. The company said it was hurt by short-term issues – such as hydrogen shortages and the Texas freeze – which are abating in the current quarter. Plug Power shares gained 1.4% in premarket trading.
\n
8) Boeing(BA) – Boeing announced the departure of lobbyist and political strategist Tim Keating. No reason was given for Keating’s departure, though the company said a search is underway for a permanent replacement. The move comes amid a rebound in travel, with Delta saying the leisure travel is already back to pre-pandemic levels and business travel is picking up as well.
\n
10) Lordstown Motors(RIDE) – Lordstown remains on watch today following a 5.5% Monday drop. The electric vehicle maker’s executive chairman Angela Strand said the company is “evaluating strategic partners” as part of its search for new funding.
\n
11) Exxon Mobil(XOM) – Exxon Mobil is denying a Bloomberg report that it plans to cut 5% to 10% of its office workforce annually over the next three to five years. Exxon told CNBC it is merely going through its annual employee assessments, which are unrelated to workforce reductions.
\n
12) CrowdStrike(CRWD) – CrowdStrike was upgraded to “buy” from “hold” at Stifel Financial, which points to the cybersecurity company’s potential to increase profit margins and its ability to acquire new customers. Whether that loss is temporary or permanent depends on the investing moves you make both before the crash and during it. The following three mistakes could decimate your portfolio and put your finances in serious jeopardy, so you should avoid them at all costs.
\n
1. Not diversifying enough
\n
Diversifying your portfolio is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself against loss. By investing in many securities, you ensure that no single one has too great an effect on your portfolio. When one stock price drops, you'll have others to pick up the slack.
\n
\n
It's not quite as simple as investing in multiple stocks, though. You also need to make sure you have your money spread around in many sectors, so that if one is hit hard (as was the case with a lot of tourism-related businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic), you won't lose everything. You should have some of your money in bonds and other safe investments as well to balance out the stocks you own.
\n
One of the simplest ways to diversify your portfolio quickly is to invest in an index fund. These are collections of stocks that track a market index, like the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). They often contain hundreds of stocks in several industries, and they generate returns that are very similar to their underlying index. Their fees are pretty affordable too. Some of the most popular S&P 500 index funds have expense ratios of just 0.03%. That means you only pay $3 per year if you have $10,000 invested.
\n
2. Emotional buying and selling
\n
Hearing a lot of chatter about a stock on social media can make some inexperienced investors tempted to buy a lot of it in the hopes of becoming an overnight millionaire. And seeing a stock in their portfolio plummet can make some want to sell for fear of losing even more if they hold onto the stock.
\n
But it's often best to avoid these rash moves. If you guess wrong, you could waste your money on a stock going nowhere or turn a temporary loss into a permanent one by selling too soon. Instead, do your research into an investment before buying or selling. Focus on its long-term growth potential. Don't worry about day-to-day shifts unless you begin to notice a larger trend that suggests the company may be heading for trouble.
\n
3. Investing money you'll need in the next few years
\n
Keep money you plan to spend in the next five to seven years out of the stock market if you can. Investing is one of the best ways to grow your wealth over the long term, but the stock market's volatility makes it a bad place for short-term investments. If you need your money at a certain time, you have to sell, regardless of what your shares are worth at the time. That could mean taking a huge loss.
\n
If you'd rather not leave your money in a savings account earning next to no interest, try stashing it in a high-yield savings account or a certificate of deposit (CD) instead. These won't give you the same returns that investing your money could, but there's no risk of loss. Plus, savings accounts enable you to withdraw your funds at any time. CDs typically don't allow you to withdraw money before the CD term is up, or else you'll pay a penalty. But that shouldn't be an issue if you know you won't need your money for a while.
\n
The underlying thread in all three of the mistakes above is not thinking about how your decisions could affect your finances down the road. Even when times are good, you should always be thinking about how your portfolio will fare in a market crash, because you never know when the next one's going to happen.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Investing Mistakes That Could Wipe You Out in a Market Crash
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Investing Mistakes That Could Wipe You Out in a Market Crash\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-01 17:40 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Just about everyone will lose money when the stock market takes a dip.
