The fund had managed around $23 billion near its peak.
\n
A big rise in bond yields, especially in notably the benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield , on the back of fears of the possibility of surging inflation, powered by a $1.9 trillion COVID fiscal package and potentially trillions more in infrastructure spending proposed by President Joe Biden, has raised hopes of a sharper rebound from the viral pandemic.
\n
That in turn has lifted benchmark borrowing costs, with the 10-year Treasury seeing its sharpest selloff in prices since 2016 , and commensurately its sharpest rally in yields.
\n
Higher borrowing costs have weighed on some of the speculative investment wagers that Wood's team has supported.
\n
Greengold says Ark Innovation's composition of smaller companies make it more vulnerable to higher bond yields. The Morningstar analyst puts it this way:
\n
The analyst adds:
\n
Wood and Ark Innovation have drawn outsize attention because the investor is seen as a disrupter in investing circles, with the flagship fund boasting a 174% gain, despite its recent slump.
\n
However, the risks and volatility associated with its heavy-technology investment strategy, which bullishly embraces electrric-vehicle companies like Tesla Inc.$(TSLA)$ and digital assets like bitcoin , has begun to raise concerns as investors fret about the rising yields and shift out of pandemic highfliers to those companies that have been left behind and may perform better as the economy opens up.
\n
Wood kicked off ARK Investment about seven years ago and earned her way onto Barron's 100 Most Influential Women in U.S. Finance this year. But Morningstar seems to think the future pathway to gains for Wood's funds will be much tougher.
\n
Ark Innovation now stands down 3.4% so far in 2021, which puts it as a laggard against the almost 125-year old Dow Jones Industrial Average , up 8% and the S&P 500 index which is up over 6% so far in 2021. The small-capitalization Russell 2000 index , meanwhile, filled with value-oriented companies, is up with over 13% in the year to date, while the growthy Nasdaq Composite Index boasts a mere 3.2% year-to-date return.
\n
In recent interviews , Wood has said that the broadening of the rally in stocks to value names and rising interest rates would create turbulence in the short-term but be good for the investment company over the longer term.
\n
A call to Ark Investment's office for comment wasn't immediately returned.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; But that type of thinking could cost you money.
\n
Companies with high P/E valuations may be able to continue to grow sales quickly, boosting earnings in the process. And that could lead to higher share prices, even though the S&P 500 hit a new intraday high April 6 and the Nasdaq reached a new high Feb. 19.
\n
The time frame under discussion is a minimum of two to three years. This period is expected by economists and investment analysts to represent a return to growth in the economy and a rebound in corporate earnings. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has pledged to keep interest rates very low.
\n
Below is a list of stocks whose P/E ratios (based on current share prices) will decline significantly over the next several years if analysts' estimates are accurate.
\n
Amazon's example
\n
In the five years through April 5, shares of Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$ have soared 451%. Look at how high the stock's forward price-to-earnings ratios have been:
\n
(FACTSET)
\n
Those forward P/E ratios (based on rolling 12-month consensus estimates among analysts polled by FactSet) have always been high for Amazon, when compared with those for the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust $(SPY.AU)$ and the Invesco QQQ Trust $(QQQ)$ (which tracks the Nasdaq-100):
\n
(FACTSET)
\n
The two ETFs' forward P/E valuations are much lower than Amazon's, although they have moved sharply higher from two years ago.
\n
You might have been warned to steer clear of Amazon's stock at any time since the ecommerce company's IPO in 1997. That would have been a mistake, as the stock market has been rewarding rapid sales growth with high P/E valuations.
\n
As with Amazon, a company's earnings may be misleading when conducting valuation research. Earnings can vary widely, especially if a company is emphasizing reinvesting in the business rather than showing profits. Amazon's annual revenue increased at a compound annual growth rate of 29% from 2015 through 2020. The company booked annual profits during that periods, but as recently as 2014 reported a net loss of $241 million on net sales of $89 billion.
\n
An investment screen of high P/E stocks
\n
The Nasdaq-100 is made up of the 100 largest companies in the Nasdaq Composite Index by market capitalization, excluding financial companies. That means it's weighted heavily toward technology companies and other rapid growers.
\n
The following screen is based on consensus sales estimates among analysts polled by FactSet through calendar 2023, but it excludes 11 for which 2023 estimates aren't available. The screen also excludes any companies expected to show declines in annual sales or net losses during 2021, 2022 or 2023.
\n
That brings the initial list down to 77 companies. Here are the 25 expected to achieve the highest compound annual growth rates for sales over the next three calendar years, with their current forward P/E ratios and ratios of current prices to 2023 and 2023 earnings-per-share estimates:
\n
(FACTSET)
\n
Continuing the Amazon discussion, you can see that the analysts expect the company's sales growth rate to slow to an annual pace of 19% over the next three years, but that is still a very impressive growth rate if it holds. And the ratio of the company's current stock price to estimatde 2023 EPS is 34.8, which isn't outrageously high for a fast grower.
\n
Taking the list from the top, for MercadoLibre Inc. (MELI) and Peloton Interactive Inc. $(PTON)$, you can see that two years out the forward P/Es based on current prices still look very high, as do the ones for Zoom Video Communications Inc (ZM). and Tesla Inc. $(TSLA)$.
\n
Potential bargains for patient long-term investors include Advanced Micro Devices Inc. $(AMD)$, Facebook Inc. (FB) and even Netflix Inc. $(NFLX)$, which has been perennially expensive.
\n
But that's when you need to do your own research.
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; But that type of thinking could cost you money.\nCompanies with high P/E valuations may be able to continue to grow sales quickly, boosting earnings in the process. And that could lead to higher share prices, even though the S&P 500 hit a new intraday high April 6 and the Nasdaq reached a new high Feb. 19.\nThe time frame under discussion is a minimum of two to three years. This period is expected by economists and investment analysts to represent a return to growth in the economy and a rebound in corporate earnings. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has pledged to keep interest rates very low.\nBelow is a list of stocks whose P/E ratios (based on current share prices) will decline significantly over the next several years if analysts' estimates are accurate.\nAmazon's example\nIn the five years through April 5, shares of Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$ have soared 451%. Look at how high the stock's forward price-to-earnings ratios have been:\n(FACTSET)\nThose forward P/E ratios (based on rolling 12-month consensus estimates among analysts polled by FactSet) have always been high for Amazon, when compared with those for the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust $(SPY.AU)$ and the Invesco QQQ Trust $(QQQ)$ (which tracks the Nasdaq-100):\n(FACTSET)\nThe two ETFs' forward P/E valuations are much lower than Amazon's, although they have moved sharply higher from two years ago.\nYou might have been warned to steer clear of Amazon's stock at any time since the ecommerce company's IPO in 1997. That would have been a mistake, as the stock market has been rewarding rapid sales growth with high P/E valuations.\nAs with Amazon, a company's earnings may be misleading when conducting valuation research. Earnings can vary widely, especially if a company is emphasizing reinvesting in the business rather than showing profits. Amazon's annual revenue increased at a compound annual growth rate of 29% from 2015 through 2020. The company booked annual profits during that periods, but as recently as 2014 reported a net loss of $241 million on net sales of $89 billion.\nAn investment screen of high P/E stocks\nThe Nasdaq-100 is made up of the 100 largest companies in the Nasdaq Composite Index by market capitalization, excluding financial companies. That means it's weighted heavily toward technology companies and other rapid growers.\nThe following screen is based on consensus sales estimates among analysts polled by FactSet through calendar 2023, but it excludes 11 for which 2023 estimates aren't available. The screen also excludes any companies expected to show declines in annual sales or net losses during 2021, 2022 or 2023.\nThat brings the initial list down to 77 companies. Here are the 25 expected to achieve the highest compound annual growth rates for sales over the next three calendar years, with their current forward P/E ratios and ratios of current prices to 2023 and 2023 earnings-per-share estimates:\n(FACTSET)\nContinuing the Amazon discussion, you can see that the analysts expect the company's sales growth rate to slow to an annual pace of 19% over the next three years, but that is still a very impressive growth rate if it holds. And the ratio of the company's current stock price to estimatde 2023 EPS is 34.8, which isn't outrageously high for a fast grower.\nTaking the list from the top, for MercadoLibre Inc. (MELI) and Peloton Interactive Inc. $(PTON)$, you can see that two years out the forward P/Es based on current prices still look very high, as do the ones for Zoom Video Communications Inc (ZM). and Tesla Inc. $(TSLA)$.\nPotential bargains for patient long-term investors include Advanced Micro Devices Inc. $(AMD)$, Facebook Inc. (FB) and even Netflix Inc. $(NFLX)$, which has been perennially expensive.\nBut that's when you need to do your own research.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":185,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":343157444,"gmtCreate":1617694955088,"gmtModify":1634297069557,"author":{"id":"3579981738791003","authorId":"3579981738791003","name":"Tt1987","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9759e0994b4b546291901ac7fa544a5e","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3579981738791003","authorIdStr":"3579981738791003"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/343157444","repostId":"1163635018","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"1163635018","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1617694773,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1163635018?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-04-06 15:39","market":"us","language":"en","title":"How to Trade Tesla After It Beats Delivery Expectations","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1163635018","media":"TheStreet","summary":"Tesla doubles its first-quarter production results year over year and shares vault higher on the new","content":"
Tesla doubles its first-quarter production results year over year and shares vault higher on the news. People love to hate Cathie Wood, but her funds get results\n
\n
\n Andrea Riquier \n
\n
\n Some thoughts from an analyst who takes a quantitative approach \n
\n
\n ARK Investment Management, the upstart firm run by Cathie Wood, has had a stellar run in recent years, but as the landscape for stocks has shifted and ARK's funds have taken a hit, naysayers are coming out of the woodwork, raising concerns about Wood's abilities, ARK's approach, and how appropriate the funds are for investors. \n
\n
\n One research group has a more favorable view of ARK's flagship fund, the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK), which may spring from its more quantitative methodology. MarketWatch spoke with CFRA's head of research, Todd Rosenbluth, one day after research powerhouse Morningstar published a critical analysis of the fund and its management. \n
\n
\n \"Thematic-investing specialist ARK Investment Management has been in tune with the market's unfolding narrative in recent years, but its lone portfolio manager, inexperienced team, and lax risk controls make it ill-prepared to grapple with a major plot twist,\" Morningstar analyst Robby Greengold wrote . \n
\n
\n In contrast, CFRA's research team wrote that the fund \"is concentrated on fast growing, innovative companies, such as Tesla $(TSLA)$ and Spotify Technology $(SPOT)$, but many of the positions have favorable earnings quality scores, reducing ARKK's risk profile. CFRA thinks ARKK has a high likelihood of outperforming its global equities ETF category in the next nine months based on our multi-faceted ratings approach,\" they said, concluding, \"stick with this top performing ARK ETF.\" \n
\n
\n Morningstar's rating \"seems negative for reasons that are less quantifiable to me,\" Rosenbluth told MarketWatch. \"They're offering a qualitative assessment, which means there's room for subjectivity.\" \n
\n
\n To the extent that CFRA's analysis takes a view of management, it mostly focuses on whether those individuals have been in place for three years. Wood founded ARK in 2014 and has been in charge since then. While Greengold notes that ARK's supporting analysts \"lack deep industry experience\" and have only bachelor's degrees, Rosenbluth says CFRA looks at \"the output of their work,\" not their experience. \n
\n
\n Morningstar \"is taking a stand on whether or not this team is experienced enough to continue doing what it's doing past 2020\" -- that is, as growth stocks may be less in favor than cyclical ones -- \"but this is the team that got the fund this far in the first place,\" Rosenbluth said. \n
\n
\n In recent weeks, there's been a fair amount of armchair quarterbacking of Wood and ARK's ability to manage a fund that has exploded in size -- to $23 billion now, with roughly $16 billion of that coming in over the past 12 months, according to FactSet data. That's important because many of the companies ARK invests in have traditionally been smaller and newer. \n
\n
\n \"There was extremely strong demand in 2020 and into 2021 that has made the fund less nimble than it was before,\" Rosenbluth acknowledged. \"When we see what's inside the fund we have confidence that management can handle it. The fund has added in some larger-cap, more liquid companies . Because it is actively managed the team is able to trade in and around stocks that are most appealing to them.\" \n
\n
\n That's exactly how ARK managed through the market turbulence of 2020, according to Wood. A MarketWatch extended interview with her on that topic is here . \n
\n
\n Rosenbluth also acknowledges that for investors who saw ARKK's returns soar 153% in 2020 there may be some risk in expecting such a stellar performance to repeat itself. \n
\n
\n \"We believe the fund will outperform the broader category of ETFs but it's reasonable to look to the downside of something that has climbed so high, in part because so many more investors have recently discovered this fund,\" he said. \"But I think it compensates investors with reward potential.\" \n
\n
\n Wood's gender -- and some of her personal preferences -- can make her seem like a Rorschach test of the investing world, with observers projecting their own interests and biases onto her. That's why Rosenbluth prefers to focus on fund performance. \n
\n
\n Still, he has an intriguing view on why Wood and ARK are grabbing so much attention. \n
\n
\n ARK is an independent asset manager, and until last year one that had a relatively modest amount of money under management, he pointed out. It's also somewhat unusual for being an active, fully transparent manager of ETFs . All that means Wood and ARK don't fit neatly into industry conceptions of what \"ETF management\" should look like, just as the Innovation ETF doesn't fit neatly into Morningstar's traditional style boxes. \n
\n
\n In fact, the love-hate relationship that the public seems to have with Wood reminds Rosenbluth of another newsmaker from a different world. \"Everyone, not just football fans, has a view on Tom Brady and many people root against him because of the past success he's had.,\" he said. \n
\n
\n See:Tech innovation is changing the world, and this fund manager has big bets on how it's going to work \n
\n
\n -Andrea Riquier; 415-439-6400; AskNewswires@dowjones.com \n
\n
\n \n
\n
\n $(END)$ Dow Jones Newswires\n
\n
\n April 06, 2021 12:44 ET (16:44 GMT)\n
\n
\n Copyright (c) 2021 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.\n
\n

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Tom Brady of asset management?
