Despite navigating its way through Black Monday in 1987, the dot-com bubble, the Great Recession, and more recently the coronavirus crash, the average annual total return for the benchmark <b>S&amp;P 500</b> since 1980, including dividends, is north of 11%.</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, we see this optimism readily apparent in Wall Street's ratings on stocks. According to <b>FactSet</b>, more than half of all stocks carry a consensus buy rating, 38% have the equivalent of a hold rating, and just 7% are rated as sells. Yet, history shows that far more than 7% of stocks will eventually head lower.</p>\n<p>Based on Wall Street's consensus price targets, the following five ultra-popular stocks are all expected to lose value over the coming 12 months.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b04ade705354c4825038c4dfcd0187d9\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"500\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Palantir Technologies: Implied downside of 12%</h3>\n<p>Since its direct listing in late September 2020, data-mining company <b>Palantir Technologies</b> (NYSE:PLTR) has been a favorite among growth and retail investors. But if Wall Street's <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-year consensus price target proves accurate, Palantir will head in reverse by up to 12%.</p>\n<p>The likeliest reason Wall Street is tempering expectations on Palantir is valuation. Specifically, Palantir ended June 17 with a market cap of nearly $48 billion, but is on track to bring in perhaps $1.5 billion in full-year sales in 2021. That's a multiple of about 32 times sales. Even if Palantir continues to grow its top-line at 30% annually, it could take years for this price-to-sales multiple to come down to anywhere close to the average for cloud stocks.</p>\n<p>Another possible concern is the growth potential for its government-focused Gotham platform. Big government contract wins in the U.S. have been primarily responsible for Palantir's exceptional growth rate. However, there remains an outside chance that President Joe Biden may curb funding to some of the federal agencies that employ Palantir's services.</p>\n<p>Over the long run, I'm optimistic and believe Palantir's platform is unlike anything else available. But tempering near-term expectations given its valuation premium may be warranted.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a38605bee8e62f3e8aa414fa24278e7e\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Moderna: Implied downside of 11%</h3>\n<p>Biotech stock <b>Moderna</b> (NASDAQ:MRNA) is arguably the biggest beneficiary of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It's <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of only three drugmakers to currently have their COVID-19 vaccine approved on an emergency-use authorization (EUA) basis in the United States. But if Wall Street's consensus 12-month price target is correct, it's stock is also on its way to a double-digit decline.</p>\n<p>Why the lack of love from Wall Street? The answer looks to be analysts looking to the future. While Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine is a mainstay in the U.S., and it's likely to play a clear role in other markets, time might prove the company's enemy. Over time, new vaccines are expected to come onto the scene, which'll eat away at Moderna's potential pool of patients.</p>\n<p>The other worry is that no one is exactly certain how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last. If it's a year, Moderna is unlikely to be the only drugmaker supplying booster shots. Meanwhile, if it's longer than a year, it means reduced sales opportunities for the company.</p>\n<p>Based solely on Wall Street's earnings per share consensus in 2021 and 2022, Moderna appears reasonably priced. But with the company staring down a potentially significant haircut in revenue next year as new drugmakers enter the space, caution is advised.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/07841e6a8173146a0fbfddf95a0f1ccb\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>GameStop: Implied downside of 71%</h3>\n<p>This will probably come as a shock to no one, but Reddit favorite <b>GameStop</b> (NYSE:GME) is fully expected to fall flat on its face. Even though Wall Street's consensus price target for the company has quintupled in recent months, it <i>still</i> implies up to 71% downside over the next year.</p>\n<p>The biggest issue for GameStop is that its valuation has completely detached from its underlying fundamentals. While it's not uncommon for stocks to trade on emotion for short periods of time, operating performance is what always dictates the long-term movement in the share price of a stock. When it comes to operating performance, GameStop has been a dud.</p>\n<p>Although the company's first-quarter fiscal results highlighted a 25% net sales increase from the prior-year period, total sales for the company have been falling precipitously for years. That's because video game retailer GameStop recognized the shift to digital gaming too late, and it's now stuck with its massive portfolio of brick-and-mortar gaming stores. Even though e-commerce sales have been a bright spot for the company, slashing costs and closing stores remains its No. 1 priority.</p>\n<p>With sufficient cash, bankruptcy isn't a concern for GameStop. But without any true top-line growth and the company still losing money, it's an impossible sell at its current price tag.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c7ff785aa0040a5565d474390f58b47a\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"457\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Image source: Getty Images.</p>\n<h3>Ocugen: Implied downside of 18%</h3>\n<p>Volatile clinical-stage biotech stock <b>Ocugen</b> (NASDAQ:OCGN) may also be in for an unpleasant next 12 months. The company behind an experimental COVID-19 vaccine (Covaxin) and a trio of internally developed eye-blindness candidates is expected to shed 18% of its value, if Wall Street's consensus price target is correct.</p>\n<p>Arguably the biggest issue for Ocugen is the clinical update the company issued on June 10 concerning Covaxin. That's a bit optimistic given an expected sales growth slowdown.</p>\n<p>Perhaps the other reason Wall Street expects NVIDIA to go sideways is the company's cryptocurrency mining chip segment. While sales of crypto chips could hit $400 million in the current quarter, demand is entirely dependent on the hype surrounding digital currencies and the favorability of technical charts. Crypto is just as well known for its long bear markets as it is for the big gains it's delivered over the past decade. According to FactSet, more than half of all stocks carry a consensus buy rating, 38% have the equivalent of a hold rating, and just 7% are rated as sells. Yet, history shows that far more than 7% of stocks will eventually head lower.\nBased on Wall Street's consensus price targets, the following five ultra-popular stocks are all expected to lose value over the coming 12 months.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nPalantir Technologies: Implied downside of 12%\nSince its direct listing in late September 2020, data-mining company Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR) has been a favorite among growth and retail investors. But if Wall Street's one-year consensus price target proves accurate, Palantir will head in reverse by up to 12%.\nThe likeliest reason Wall Street is tempering expectations on Palantir is valuation. Specifically, Palantir ended June 17 with a market cap of nearly $48 billion, but is on track to bring in perhaps $1.5 billion in full-year sales in 2021. That's a multiple of about 32 times sales. Even if Palantir continues to grow its top-line at 30% annually, it could take years for this price-to-sales multiple to come down to anywhere close to the average for cloud stocks.\nAnother possible concern is the growth potential for its government-focused Gotham platform. Big government contract wins in the U.S. have been primarily responsible for Palantir's exceptional growth rate. However, there remains an outside chance that President Joe Biden may curb funding to some of the federal agencies that employ Palantir's services.\nOver the long run, I'm optimistic and believe Palantir's platform is unlike anything else available. It's one of only three drugmakers to currently have their COVID-19 vaccine approved on an emergency-use authorization (EUA) basis in the United States. But if Wall Street's consensus 12-month price target is correct, it's stock is also on its way to a double-digit decline.\nWhy the lack of love from Wall Street? The answer looks to be analysts looking to the future. While Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine is a mainstay in the U.S., and it's likely to play a clear role in other markets, time might prove the company's enemy. Over time, new vaccines are expected to come onto the scene, which'll eat away at Moderna's potential pool of patients.\nThe other worry is that no one is exactly certain how long COVID-19 vaccine immunity will last. If it's a year, Moderna is unlikely to be the only drugmaker supplying booster shots. Meanwhile, if it's longer than a year, it means reduced sales opportunities for the company.\nBased solely on Wall Street's earnings per share consensus in 2021 and 2022, Moderna appears reasonably priced. But with the company staring down a potentially significant haircut in revenue next year as new drugmakers enter the space, caution is advised.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nGameStop: Implied downside of 71%\nThis will probably come as a shock to no one, but Reddit favorite GameStop (NYSE:GME) is fully expected to fall flat on its face. Even though Wall Street's consensus price target for the company has quintupled in recent months, it still implies up to 71% downside over the next year.\nThe biggest issue for GameStop is that its valuation has completely detached from its underlying fundamentals. While it's not uncommon for stocks to trade on emotion for short periods of time, operating performance is what always dictates the long-term movement in the share price of a stock. When it comes to operating performance, GameStop has been a dud.\nAlthough the company's first-quarter fiscal results highlighted a 25% net sales increase from the prior-year period, total sales for the company have been falling precipitously for years. That's because video game retailer GameStop recognized the shift to digital gaming too late, and it's now stuck with its massive portfolio of brick-and-mortar gaming stores. Even though e-commerce sales have been a bright spot for the company, slashing costs and closing stores remains its No. 1 priority.\nWith sufficient cash, bankruptcy isn't a concern for GameStop. speculative retail trading.\nAMC announced earlier this week that it had sold 8.5 million equity shares to Mudrick for $230.5 million. The hedge fund was also involved in a key $100 million debt restructuring deal with AMC in December.\nThe company completed another equity offering on Thursday, raising $587 million. Even with an 18% decline on Thursday, the stock is still up 96% this week.\nBloomberg News first reported that Mudrick had exited its equity Simple algebra suggests that the future price of a stock can be calculated by multiplying an assumed P/E multiple by actual or estimated EPS.</p>\n<p>The graph below shows that Apple’s trailing P/E (that is, the valuation multiple derived using past earnings figures) has pulled back from the second half 2020 highs of around 40 times. The bad news is that, even at the current 36 times, the figure is much higher than it has historically been, on average.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d180bf2e7bab467da1e79a1eada870d1\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"555\"><span>Figure 2: Apple's Price/Earnings.</span></p>\n<p>There are good reasons why Apple now trades at a much higher P/E multiple than it did in the past. A few of them include:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Future growth opportunities have expanded with&nbsp;the 5G upgrade cycle, the expansion of the services portfolio, the rebirth of the Mac and iPad segments,and even the rumored Apple Car</li>\n <li>Apple’s financial performance is less dependent on one single product category – the iPhone – than it was in the mid 2010s</li>\n <li>Services, with its higher margins and more predictable revenue inflow, have become a much more important piece of the business</li>\n <li>Interest rates have come down to the closest that they have ever been to zero, which is a tailwind to valuation multiples</li>\n</ul>\n<p>That said, I find it unrealistic to project an increase in Apple stock price based primarily on valuation multiple expansion. I believe that a sustainable trailing P/E of around 35 times is about as high as one should reasonably expect to see in the next few years.</p>\n<p><b>Second piece of the puzzle: earnings</b></p>\n<p>Valuation multiples do not tell the whole story, however. Apple stock can also rise on future financial performance, especially if the results beat current expectations.</p>\n<p>According to our friends at&nbsp;Seeking Alpha, analysts currently project 2024 earnings per share to land at $5.38. For reference, Apple’s fiscal 2020 earnings reached $3.28.</p>\n<p>Now, let’s travel in time to September 2024, roughly three years from now, at the end of Apple’s fiscal year. At that moment, Apple stock should be worth about $190 per share, given two assumptions:</p>\n<ol>\n <li>The company meets current EPS expectations for fiscal 2024</li>\n <li>The P/E multiple stays close to current levels, at 35 times</li>\n</ol>\n<p>Therefore, for Apple stock price to double in three years primarily on the back of financial performance, the Cupertino company needs to deliver EPS of over $7. That is: rather than growing earnings at an expected annual pace of about 13%, Apple needs to pick up the pace and offer 22% instead.</p>\n<p>This is quite a tall order, in my view. Three-year growth in earnings at these levels has not happened since the very early days of the iPhone and iPad, two revolutionary product categories that Apple essentially invented.</p>\n<p>Therefore, for Apple stock to get to $250 in three years without valuation multiples climbing to levels never seen before, any (or a combination of) the following would probably need to happen to send EPS through the roof:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>An outstanding 5G super cycle that supports iPhone sales increase comparable to early 2010s levels, when the product category was still in the middle of its growth life cycle;</li>\n <li>A sizable, game-changing product launch that adds revenues where none currently exist. The most likely candidates would be&nbsp;augmented or virtual realitywearable devices,or the Apple Car;</li>\n <li>Aggressive monetization of Apple’s user base, primarily through service offerings and cross-selling of wearable and complementary products. In the case of services, segment revenues would somehow need to double in three years or less,rather than the expected five.</li>\n <li>Acceleration in the share repurchase efforts. Lately, Apple has been retiring its stock at a pace of 5% to 6% per year. That is: rather than growing earnings at an expected annual pace of about 13%, Apple needs to pick up the pace and offer 22% instead.\nThis is quite a tall order, in my view. Three-year growth in earnings at these levels has not happened since the very early days of the iPhone and iPad, two revolutionary product categories that Apple essentially invented.\nTherefore, for Apple stock to get to $250 in three years without valuation multiples climbing to levels never seen before, any (or a combination of) the following would probably need to happen to send EPS through the roof:\n\nAn outstanding 5G super cycle that supports iPhone sales increase comparable to early 2010s levels, when the product category was still in the middle of its growth life cycle;\nA sizable, game-changing product launch that adds revenues where none currently exist. The most likely candidates would be augmented or virtual realitywearable devices,or the Apple Car;\nAggressive monetization of Apple’s user base, primarily through service offerings and cross-selling of wearable and complementary products. In the case of services, segment revenues would somehow need to double in three years or less,rather than the expected five.\nAcceleration in the share repurchase efforts. Lately, Apple has been retiring its stock at a pace of 5% to 6% per year. I figured the legacy air carrier would put out a poorly received report, and the financials did come into a little turbulence with another huge loss on a sharp decline in revenue.</li>\n <li>Norwegian Cruise Line tumbled 7% for the week. It was a rough week for cruise lines. There was more pressure to keep the industry from resuming operations out of stateside ports this summer.</li>\n <li>Carnival stock was the biggest sinker of the three stocks, losing 8% of its value. It was a great week to double up on the number of cruise stocks on this list to avoid. Carnival had risen 9% the week before, and this wiped nearly all of those previous gains out.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>The three stocks averaged a 6.7% slide for the week. The <b>S&amp;P 500</b> actually rose during the week. The 1.4% gain naturally beat the three stocks that all went the wrong way. This week, I see <b>Coinbase Global</b> (NASDAQ:COIN), <b>American Airlines</b> (NASDAQ:AAL), and <b>Travelzoo</b> (NASDAQ:TZOO) as vulnerable investments in the near term. Here's why I think these are three stocks to avoid this week.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/844fa22418b0d6398103c6917b0d7eb3\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"459\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2><b>1. Coinbase Global</b></h2>\n<p>Last week's buzzworthy IPO was Coinbase Global. The leading cryptocurrency marketplace is growingly briskly. Revenue soared 144% to $1.3 billion in 2020. It was a mesmerizing debutante, of course. Coinbase priced its direct listing at a reference price of $250, and it wasn't enough. It soared when it began trading well into Wednesday's trading day. It closed out the week trading 37% above its reference price.</p>\n<p>Coinbase is going to be <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> of the market's best cryptocurrency stocks, giving investors to play the entire marketplace instead of individual tokens or players. However, the $68 billion market cap it has entering the new week of trading is problematic. There are a growing number of places to trade crypto, and trading costs for investors will invariably head lower in the process. If you saw the race to zero for stock brokerages it's easy to see this become a cutthroat niche as well.</p>\n<p>Coinbase finds itself in a potentially lose-lose situation. If cryptocurrency begins losing favor obviously this will end horribly for Coinbase. However, success for the next-gen currency vehicles can also end badly for Coinbase as major financial hotbeds embrace crypto trading at more competitive commission rates.</p>\n<h2>2. American Airlines</h2>\n<p>I was right to be worried about Delta's quarterly report last week, and now we have American Airlines as the next legacy carrier on the runway. It reports on Thursday morning.</p>\n<p>It's fair to point out that investors are more prepared for a dud out of American Airlines now that they heard from Delta last week. American Airlines stock took a 6% hit in an otherwise buoyant market trading last week, partly in sympathy with Delta's poorly received financials -- but also because American previewed its upcoming financials. It wasn't pretty. American Airlines expects to post a larger loss than analysts were modeling. Wall Street pros see revenue cut by more than half for the period.</p>\n<p>A rough report isn't normally going to be a deal breaker, but then you have the stock's valuation to worry about. American Airlines is fetching an enterprise value well above the $33 billion it was commanding at the end of 2019 before the pandemic became a fundamentals-crushing reality. American Airlines ascending shares along with financing through fresh shares and debt have bloated the value of the business. The valuation is out of whack, and a rough report on Thursday will only hammer that point home.</p>\n<h2>3. Travelzoo</h2>\n<p>Travelzoo reported fourth-quarter results just five weeks ago, but it's back with its first-quarter results on Thursday. Travelzoo is a popular provider of travel deals with 30.2 million members worldwide, and I'll concede that this is a dangerous name to put on this list. Stimulus checks and COVID-19 vaccinations are picking up, and Travelzoo's a smart way for folks to travel sponsored getaway bargains.</p>\n<p>The rub here is that there are still plenty of international travel restrictions in place. Travelzoo's overhead is low enough where it returned to profitability in the previous quarter, but it fell well short of analyst revenue targets. I figured the legacy air carrier would put out a poorly received report, and the financials did come into a little turbulence with another huge loss on a sharp decline in revenue.\nNorwegian Cruise Line tumbled 7% for the week. It was a rough week for cruise lines. There was more pressure to keep the industry from resuming operations out of stateside ports this summer.\nCarnival stock was the biggest sinker of the three stocks, losing 8% of its value. It was a great week to double up on the number of cruise stocks on this list to avoid. Carnival had risen 9% the week before, and this wiped nearly all of those previous gains out.\n\nThe three stocks averaged a 6.7% slide for the week. The S&P 500 actually rose during the week. The 1.4% gain naturally beat the three stocks that all went the wrong way. This week, I see Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN), American Airlines (NASDAQ:AAL), and Travelzoo (NASDAQ:TZOO) as vulnerable investments in the near term. Here's why I think these are three stocks to avoid this week.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. Coinbase Global\nLast week's buzzworthy IPO was Coinbase Global. The leading cryptocurrency marketplace is growingly briskly. Revenue soared 144% to $1.3 billion in 2020. It was a mesmerizing debutante, of course. Coinbase priced its direct listing at a reference price of $250, and it wasn't enough. It soared when it began trading well into Wednesday's trading day. It closed out the week trading 37% above its reference price.\nCoinbase is going to be one of the market's best cryptocurrency stocks, giving investors to play the entire marketplace instead of individual tokens or players. However, the $68 billion market cap it has entering the new week of trading is problematic. There are a growing number of places to trade crypto, and trading costs for investors will invariably head lower in the process. If you saw the race to zero for stock brokerages it's easy to see this become a cutthroat niche as well.\nCoinbase finds itself in a potentially lose-lose situation. If cryptocurrency begins losing favor obviously this will end horribly for Coinbase. However, success for the next-gen currency vehicles can also end badly for Coinbase as major financial hotbeds embrace crypto trading at more competitive commission rates.\n2. American Airlines\nI was right to be worried about Delta's quarterly report last week, and now we have American Airlines as the next legacy carrier on the runway. It reports on Thursday morning.\nIt's fair to point out that investors are more prepared for a dud out of American Airlines now that they heard from Delta last week. American Airlines stock took a 6% hit in an otherwise buoyant market trading last week, partly in sympathy with Delta's poorly received financials -- but also because American previewed its upcoming financials. It wasn't pretty. American Airlines expects to post a larger loss than analysts were modeling. Wall Street pros see revenue cut by more than half for the period.\nA rough report isn't normally going to be a deal breaker, but then you have the stock's valuation to worry about. American Airlines is fetching an enterprise value well above the $33 billion it was commanding at the end of 2019 before the pandemic became a fundamentals-crushing reality. American Airlines ascending shares along with financing through fresh shares and debt have bloated the value of the business. The valuation is out of whack, and a rough report on Thursday will only hammer that point home.\n3. Travelzoo\nTravelzoo reported fourth-quarter results just five weeks ago, but it's back with its first-quarter results on Thursday. Travelzoo is a popular provider of travel deals with 30.2 million members worldwide, and I'll concede that this is a dangerous name to put on this list. Stimulus checks and COVID-19 vaccinations are picking up, and Travelzoo's a smart way for folks to travel sponsored getaway bargains.\nThe rub here is that there are still plenty of international travel restrictions in place. Travelzoo's overhead is low enough where it returned to profitability in the previous quarter, but it fell well short of analyst revenue targets. The S&P 500 gained 1.1% to 4,170.42, also reaching a record high. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.3% to 14,038.76.\nTechnology shares rebounded as bond yields fell. The so-called FAANG stocks – Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Alphabet – all climbed more than 1%. The 10-year Treasury yield dropped 8 basis points below 1.56%. Earlier in the year, higher rates caused investors to dump growth-oriented stocks.\nRetail sales surged 9.8% in March as additional stimulus sent consumer spending soaring, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. That number topped the Dow Jones estimate of a 6.1% gain.\nA separate report on Thursday showed that first-time filings for unemployment insurance dropped to the lowest level since March 2020. The Labor Department reported 576,000 new jobless claims for the week ended April 10. Economists polled by Dow Jones expected a total of 710,000.\n“Although 34,000 by itself is just another number, this is a monumental feat when you think back to where we were last year at this time,” said Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at LPL Financial. “The speed and resiliency of this economic recovery is unlike anything we’ve ever seen and it helps to justify stocks at all-time highs.”\nShares of UnitedHealth, a Dow member, gained 3.8% after results topped the Street’s forecasts and the health insurer raised guidance for 2021.\nPepsi shares added 0.1% after the consumer snack and drink maker said sales last quarter rose nearly 7%, topping estimates.\nThe market has been grinding higher to reach new records in recent sessions amid the economic reopening and trillions of dollars in stimulus.
