The world's leading subscription-based streaming service will announce its first-quarter results after having posted wildly different growth rates in the previous two reports.
\n
Netflix's late April earnings showed much slower user growth than management had forecast, which executives blamed on temporary challenges like a light content release schedule rather than rising competition from rivals like Disney (NYSE:DIS).
\n
That explanation raises the bar for Netflix to issue an optimistic forecast for the second half of 2021 in its announcement on July 20. Let's take a look at the key metrics to follow in that report.
\n
Meeting low expectations
\n
Growth expectations are low following last quarter's surprise slowdown. Netflix is aiming to add just 1 million global subscribers after gaining 4 million last quarter. The same factors that powered that weak Q1 result will affect Q2. Those include a return to more normal TV trends as people turned to other entertainment activities in the wake of the pandemic.
\n
The big growth question is whether Netflix is feeling heat from competition like Disney's expanding streaming service. Executives said in April that these threats weren't to blame for the slow start to the year, given that engagement remained strong with existing members and growth was sluggish across many markets rather than just in the ones with new competition. Tuesday's report will mark Netflix's opportunity to show that it is still the leader in the niche.
\n
Capital questions
\n
The improving cash flow picture has been a big factor behind Netflix's stock price surge, and that's likely to be another highlight of this report. Ironically, the worry is that the company can't spend cash quickly enough to keep the content pipeline fully stocked. Most TV and movie production paused early last year and has only now started back up. Management is hoping to spend as much as $17 billion on content this year while marking its first year of positive cash flow.
\n
NFLX Cash from Operations (TTM) data by YCharts
\n
Look for a new financial metric this quarter, too: stock buyback spending. Executives started that program in Q2 after the company found plenty of room to invest in the business while paying down its debt.
\n
The forecast for the second half
\n
Netflix has been telling investors that the business will resume its impressive growth rate in the second half of the year, mainly thanks to the flood of new releases that will hit its servers. Tuesday's report is management's opportunity to back up those claims with hard numbers.
\n
The company will issue a new subscriber outlook that should reflect its industry leadership position and its unusually high member loyalty. The world's leading subscription-based streaming service will announce its first-quarter results after having posted wildly different growth rates in the previous two reports.\nNetflix's late April earnings showed much slower user growth than management had forecast, which executives blamed on temporary challenges like a light content release schedule rather than rising competition from rivals like Disney (NYSE:DIS).\nThat explanation raises the bar for Netflix to issue an optimistic forecast for the second half of 2021 in its announcement on July 20. Let's take a look at the key metrics to follow in that report.\nMeeting low expectations\nGrowth expectations are low following last quarter's surprise slowdown. Netflix is aiming to add just 1 million global subscribers after gaining 4 million last quarter. The same factors that powered that weak Q1 result will affect Q2. Those include a return to more normal TV trends as people turned to other entertainment activities in the wake of the pandemic.\nThe big growth question is whether Netflix is feeling heat from competition like Disney's expanding streaming service. Executives said in April that these threats weren't to blame for the slow start to the year, given that engagement remained strong with existing members and growth was sluggish across many markets rather than just in the ones with new competition. Tuesday's report will mark Netflix's opportunity to show that it is still the leader in the niche.\nCapital questions\nThe improving cash flow picture has been a big factor behind Netflix's stock price surge, and that's likely to be another highlight of this report. Ironically, the worry is that the company can't spend cash quickly enough to keep the content pipeline fully stocked. Most TV and movie production paused early last year and has only now started back up. Management is hoping to spend as much as $17 billion on content this year while marking its first year of positive cash flow.\nNFLX Cash from Operations (TTM) data by YCharts\nLook for a new financial metric this quarter, too: stock buyback spending. Executives started that program in Q2 after the company found plenty of room to invest in the business while paying down its debt.\nThe forecast for the second half\nNetflix has been telling investors that the business will resume its impressive growth rate in the second half of the year, mainly thanks to the flood of new releases that will hit its servers. Tuesday's report is management's opportunity to back up those claims with hard numbers.\nThe company will issue a new subscriber outlook that should reflect its industry leadership position and its unusually high member loyalty. Anything less might be a reason for shareholders to worry. Meanwhile, Netflix's updated profit outlook should continue forecasting at least a 20% operating margin, assuming management is right about its ability to raise prices as user engagement rises.\nThe forecast for the fall and winter months might seem weak compared to the blockbuster growth the service enjoyed in 2019 and 2020. But with global membership rising further above 200 million, it should also reinforce the idea that Netflix is still in the early days of improving on its current base of just 10% of total TV screen time in the U.S. market.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":409,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":156029840,"gmtCreate":1625186928980,"gmtModify":1631890135921,"author":{"id":"3578522473795865","authorId":"3578522473795865","name":"KentxTeo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fe7b5ba2701712406a72f99907430051","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578522473795865","authorIdStr":"3578522473795865"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Impressive gains ","listText":"Impressive gains ","text":"Impressive gains","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/156029840","repostId":"1157474542","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1157474542","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1625185432,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1157474542?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-02 08:23","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Krispy Kreme shares rise 23% despite disappointing pricing, opening trade","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1157474542","media":"CNBC","summary":"Krispy Kreme shares closed Thursday up more than 23% despite a disappointing opening trade for the c","content":"
\n
Krispy Kreme shares closed Thursday up more than 23% despite a disappointing opening trade for the company's return to the public markets.\nOn Wednesday night, the doughnut chain priced its initial ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"cnbc_highlight","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The stock's first trade on Thursday afternoon was $16.30 per share, but shares quickly rebounded. When the markets closed, the stock was trading for $21 a share.\nThe share offering raised $500 million for the company and gave it an implied valuation of $2.7 billion.
Anything less might be a reason for shareholders to worry. Meanwhile, Netflix's updated profit outlook should continue forecasting at least a 20% operating margin, assuming management is right about its ability to raise prices as user engagement rises.
\n
The forecast for the fall and winter months might seem weak compared to the blockbuster growth the service enjoyed in 2019 and 2020. But with global membership rising further above 200 million, it should also reinforce the idea that Netflix is still in the early days of improving on its current base of just 10% of total TV screen time in the U.S. market.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Netflix Earnings: What to Watch
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNetflix Earnings: What to Watch\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-17 21:22 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) investors are bracing for a volatile trading week ahead. Aerospace giant Boeing weighed on the Dow, with shares falling 2% after regulators told the company it is not likely to receive certification for its long-range aircraft until at least 2023.\nMonday's moves came as Treasury yields retreated across most maturities, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield sliding to about 1.49%. Yields move inverse of prices.\nStocks finished their best week in months on Friday as investors are growing more confident the current inflation in the U.S. is not a sustained economic threat, but a temporary uptick.\nThe S&P 500 ended Friday at a closing record high of 4,280.70, while the Dow rose 237 points. While the Nasdaq Composite closed just lower on Friday, it added 2.35% for the week, its best since April 9 and is up 4.45% for the month of June.\n\"This is one of the more buoyant markets I've ever seen, and as far as I'm concerned taking money off the table is not advised right now,\" CNBC's Jim Cramer said on \"Squawk on the Street.\"\nThe weekly gains came even after the Commerce Department reported that its inflation indicator rose 3.4% in May, the fastest increase since the early 1990s.\nSpikes in the core personal consumption expenditures price index can cause heartburn for investors since the Federal Reserve likes to watch it for signs of inflation. Still, the rise actually undershot what economists polled by Dow Jones had forecast and reinforced for investors that the economy-wide price increases are likely to be transient and manageable.\nA massive, bipartisan infrastructure deal appeared revitalized as of Sunday evening after President Joe Biden clarified on Saturday thathe doesn’t plan to veto the legislationif it comes without a separate reconciliation bill favored by Democrats.
