It's expensive stocks, and some of those happen to be in the tech bucket. There's also expensive stocks in biotech, and there's expensive stocks even in nontech groups. And what's really changed in the last two or three months is that the bond market has woken up to the idea that actually the back end is going to move out, and so the narrative three months ago was that 'rates can't go up, they won't go up, the Fed won't let it happen.' But here we are, 1.5%, 1.6% [for the 10-year]. And so now the equity market is accepting this idea that it was inevitable. And we're adjusting. So I don't think this is the end of the bull market or the end of tech stocks per se, but it was an adjustment that was very necessary.\"\nDavid Kostin, chief U.S. equity strategist at Goldman Sachs, said tech is still a longer-term bet.\n\"The issue really is what's happening on the margin. We have huge fiscal stimulus coming, likely to be signed in the next day or so. We're likely to have very significant improvement in the vaccination process, more than 2 million people a day. So those things are about nearer-term activity, and that really does benefit an improvement of business fundamentals for some of the near-term, more cyclical-related stocks in the recovery trade, if you will. So if you want to think about longer term, sure, technology, secular growth, those are definitely tapping into some of the evolutions in what's happening in the economy, but near term, tactically it's likely to be cyclical.\"\nJim Grant, founder and editor of Grant's Interest Rate Observer, broke down the bond market.\n\"We have been in a 40-year bull market in bonds. Almost no one living on Wall Street today has any recollection of interest rates rising. We are predisposed to assume that rates go down, that seems natural. ... They are remarkably low when adjusted for inflation. As measured since 1962, as a saver, you'd get over 2.5 almost percentage points of real inflation-adjusted yield by owning the 10-year Treasury. Today you get exactly no real interest. ... So the value proposition for the 10-year Treasury, to me, is absolutely barren. There's nothing to be said as an investment for them.\"\nGabriela Santos, global market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, said it all comes back to earnings.\n\"I think one of the points we make is we're coming into this year with a much better outlook but with stretched valuations. So returns this year are really going to come from the change in earnings, and it's really the cyclical parts of the market that will see the biggest delta in earnings this year versus last year. Those are the kind of sectors that can absorb rising yields, that can really tap into this improvement in the economy. So just an example, financials will see a 40 percentage-point change in earnings, consumer discretionary 70 percentage points. If we look at health care, only 2 percentage points. Tech only 10%. Each shareholder of record <i>as of June 21</i> will receive three additional shares of NVIDIA stock for each <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> they own, which will be distributed after the market close on July 19. The stock will start trading on a split-adjusted basis when the market opens on Tuesday, July 20.</p>\n<p>To give some context to the numbers, here's an example of how it will work, though the final numbers will vary based on the then-current stock price. For each share of NVIDIA stock that an investor holds -- currently worth roughly $760 -- post-split, shareholders would own a total of four shares priced at $190 each.</p>\n<h3>The odd quirk</h3>\n<p>What sets NVIDIA's stock split apart from many others is the extraordinary length of time between the record date and the distribution date of the new, split shares. The record date is the date by which investors must own the stock in order to be eligible to receive additional shares created by the stock split, which occurs on the effective date. So what happens to investors who buy between the record date and the effective date? But the 2021 growth rate would be the fastest since 1984, according to&nbsp;World Bank&nbsp;data.</p>\n<p><b>Tech value stock screen</b></p>\n<p>There are several definitions of value stocks, but generally they are those that trade at lower valuations to earnings and typically grow their sales at a slower pace. That said, an individual value stock might also be considered a growth stock. This is illustrated by the Russell indexes.</p>\n<p>The Russell 1000 Index&nbsp;is made up of the 1,000 largest publicly traded U.S. companies by market capitalization and is reconstituted each year in June. Selected from the Russell 1000 are the Russell 1000 Value Index,which has 849 stocks, and the Russell 1000 Growth Index,which has 453 stocks. The groups overlap, with 291 stocks in both. You can read how FTSE Russell describes the makeup of its indexeshere.</p>\n<p>So an easy way to play value at this time is to buy shares of an exchange traded fund that tracks the Russell 1000 Value Index,such as the iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF&nbsp;or the Vanguard Russell 1000 Value ETF.As always, do your own research on any investment you consider to make an informed decisions.</p>\n<p>For a large-cap technology value screen, we started with the information technology sector of the S&amp;P 500 Index.Here’s how this sector’s weighted aggregate forward price-to-earnings ratio has increased over the past five years:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/448e8db17465fbd7031f10b78f718961\" tg-width=\"1259\" tg-height=\"988\"><span>(FACTSET)</span></p>\n<p>The sector’s forward P/E his risen to 25.4.</p>\n<p>This doesn’t mean “expensive” tech stocks can’t be excellent investments. Salesforce.com&nbsp;was trading at a forward P/E of 68.7 five years ago, and the stock has nearly tripled since then.</p>\n<p>Getting back to the S&amp;P 500 tech value screen, we then added tech-oriented stocks in the communications services sector, including videogame developers and Facebook Inc.,Alphabet Inc.,Netflix Inc.&nbsp;and Twitter Inc..That brought the list up to 82 stocks. Two of the videogame developers made the cut, but among the four companies named above, only Facebook had a low enough P/E to pass the screen.</p>\n<p>Here are the 43 S&amp;P 500 tech companies that So the figures are based on consensus estimates for&nbsp;<i>calendar</i>&nbsp;2020 among analyst polled by FactSet. For Micron Technology Inc.,the 2020 sales growth figure is for the past four reported fiscal quarters through Dec. 3.</p>\n<p><b>The curious case of Facebook</b></p>\n<p>You might wonder about Facebook, which lives in both the value and growth worlds. Its forward P/E valuation of 23.2 is relatively low. But Facebook is very much a growth stock — sales increased 22% last year, and analysts expect even better revenue growth of 25% in 2021.</p>\n<p>Facebook trades for seven times the consensus forward sales estimate, compared to a forward price-to-sales estimate of 5.9 for the entire S&amp;P 500 tech sector. But that “high” price-to-sales ratio may not be so important because it is such a profitable company. Its 2020 operating margin of 50% is among the highest on the list.</p>\n<p>Cody Willard called Facebook a bargain, not only because of its low P/E valuation but because of&nbsp;the long-term growth path&nbsp;for its Oculus virtual-reality hardware and software.</p>\n<p>There are 16 companies on the list that are expected to produce double-digit increases in sales in 2021, including Skyworks Solutions Inc.&nbsp;and Qualcomm Inc..Both are expected to grow their revenues by 21% this year.</p>\n<p><b>‘Old tech’</b></p>\n<p>Oracle Corp.&nbsp;is an “old tech” company that can be considered a value stock, as it trades for only 15.4 times the consensus earnings estimate for the next 12 months among analysts polled by FactSet. The company reported better-than-expected results for its fiscal third quarter after the close March 10 and&nbsp;increased its quarterly dividend by a third. Then on March 11, the stock fell as much as 9%. That “sell the good news” reaction may not be much of a surprise, as the stock had risen 48% over the previous year through March 10.</p>\n<p>International Business Machines Corp.&nbsp;is one of the cheapest stocks on the list, based on its forward P/E ratio of 11.5. The stock was up 2% from a year earlier through the close March 10. It has an attractive dividend yield of 5.10% that is supported by strong free cash flow.</p>\n<p>Victoria Greene, a portfolio manager at G Squared Private Wealth in College Station, Texas,may have been a bit early&nbsp;when naming IBM as an excellent long-term play in June. Stocks with low valuations tend to do well during economic growth phases.\nMark DeCambre underlined the value rallyby pointing out that the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended at a record high Dec. 10, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was still in a correction.\nBut what about tech stocks? There’s plenty of value there too, as you can see in the screen below.\nEconomists polled by MarketWatch expect the U.S. economy to expand by 6% in 2021. Yes, that’s coming off a 3.5% contraction in 2020, according to the latest estimate from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. But the 2021 growth rate would be the fastest since 1984, according to World Bank data.\nTech value stock screen\nThere are several definitions of value stocks, but generally they are those that trade at lower valuations to earnings and typically grow their sales at a slower pace. That said, an individual value stock might also be considered a growth stock. Its forward P/E valuation of 23.2 is relatively low. But Facebook is very much a growth stock — sales increased 22% last year, and analysts expect even better revenue growth of 25% in 2021.\nFacebook trades for seven times the consensus forward sales estimate, compared to a forward price-to-sales estimate of 5.9 for the entire S&P 500 tech sector. But that “high” price-to-sales ratio may not be so important because it is such a profitable company. Its 2020 operating margin of 50% is among the highest on the list.\nCody Willard called Facebook a bargain, not only because of its low P/E valuation but because of the long-term growth path for its Oculus virtual-reality hardware and software.\nThere are 16 companies on the list that are expected to produce double-digit increases in sales in 2021, including Skyworks Solutions Inc. and Qualcomm Inc..Both are expected to grow their revenues by 21% this year.\n‘Old tech’\nOracle Corp. is an “old tech” company that can be considered a value stock, as it trades for only 15.4 times the consensus earnings estimate for the next 12 months among analysts polled by FactSet. The company reported better-than-expected results for its fiscal third quarter after the close March 10 and increased its quarterly dividend by a third. Then on March 11, the stock fell as much as 9%. That “sell the good news” reaction may not be much of a surprise, as the stock had risen 48% over the previous year through March 10.\nInternational Business Machines Corp. is one of the cheapest stocks on the list, based on its forward P/E ratio of 11.5. The stock was up 2% from a year earlier through the close March 10. It has an attractive dividend yield of 5.10% that is supported by strong free cash flow.\nVictoria Greene, a portfolio manager at G Squared Private Wealth in College Station, Texas,may have been a bit early when naming IBM as an excellent long-term play in June. But here we are, 1.5%, 1.6% [for the 10-year]. And so now the equity market is accepting this idea that it was inevitable. And we're adjusting. So I don't think this is the end of the bull market or the end of tech stocks per se, but it was an adjustment that was very necessary.\"\nDavid Kostin, chief U.S. equity strategist at Goldman Sachs, said tech is still a longer-term bet.\n\"The issue really is what's happening on the margin. So those things are about nearer-term activity, and that really does benefit an improvement of business fundamentals for some of the near-term, more cyclical-related stocks in the recovery trade, if you will. So if you want to think about longer term, sure, technology, secular growth, those are definitely tapping into some of the evolutions in what's happening in the economy, but near term, tactically it's likely to be cyclical.\"\nJim Grant, founder and editor of Grant's Interest Rate Observer, broke down the bond market.\n\"We have been in a 40-year bull market in bonds. Almost no one living on Wall Street today has any recollection of interest rates rising. We are predisposed to assume that rates go down, that seems natural. ... They are remarkably low when adjusted for inflation. As measured since 1962, as a saver, you'd get over 2.5 almost percentage points of real inflation-adjusted yield by owning the 10-year Treasury. Today you get exactly no real interest. ... So the value proposition for the 10-year Treasury, to me, is absolutely barren. There's nothing to be said as an investment for them.\"\nGabriela Santos, global market strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management, said it all comes back to earnings.\n\"I think one of the points we make is we're coming into this year with a much better outlook but with stretched valuations. So returns this year are really going to come from the change in earnings, and it's really the cyclical parts of the market that will see the biggest delta in earnings this year versus last year. Those are the kind of sectors that can absorb rising yields, that can really tap into this improvement in the economy. So just an example, financials will see a 40 percentage-point change in earnings, consumer discretionary 70 percentage points. If we look at health care, only 2 percentage points. Tech only 10%. Iceland and Bulgaria followed suit and Ireland and the Netherlands announced suspensions on Sunday.</p>\n<p>Spain will stop using the vaccine for at least 15 days, Cadena Ser radio reported, citing unnamed sources.</p>\n<p>The top WHO scientist reiterated on Monday that there have been no documented deaths linked to COVID-19 vaccines.</p>\n<p>“We do not want people to panic,” Soumya Swaminathan said on a virtual media briefing, adding there has been no association, so far, pinpointed between so-called “thromboembolic events” reported in some countries and COVID-19 shots.</p>\n<p>WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said an advisory committee meeting on AstraZeneca would be held on Tuesday. EU medicines regulator EMA will also convene this week to assess the information gathered into whether the AstraZeneca shot contributed to thromboembolic events in those inoculated.</p>\n<p>The moves by some of Europe’s largest and most populous countries will deepen concerns about the slow rollout of vaccines in the region, which has been plagued by shortages due to problems producing vaccines, including AstraZeneca’s.</p>\n<p>Germany warned last week it was facing a third wave of infections, Italy is intensifying lockdowns and hospitals in the Paris region are close to being overloaded.</p>\n<p>German Health Minister Jens Spahn said that although the risk of blood clots was low, it could not be ruled out.</p>\n<p>“This is a professional decision, not a political one,” Spahn said, adding he was following a recommendation of the Paul Ehrlich Institute, Germany’s vaccine regulator.</p>\n<p>France said it was suspending the vaccine’s use pending an assessment by EMA.</p>\n<p>“The decision taken, in conformity also with our European policy, is to suspend, out of precaution, vaccination with the AZ shot, hoping that we can resume quickly if the EMA’s guidance allows,” French President Emmanuel Macron said.</p>\n<p>Italy said its halt was a “precautionary and temporary measure” pending EMA’s ruling.</p>\n<p>“The EMA will meet soon to clarify any doubts so that the AstraZeneca vaccine can be resumed safely in the vaccination campaign as soon as possible,” said Gianni Rezza, Director General of Prevention at Italy’s Ministry of Health.</p>\n<p>Austria and Spain have stopped using particular batches and prosecutors in the northern Italian region of Piedmont earlier seized 393,600 doses following the death of a man hours after he was vaccinated. It was the second region to do so after Sicily, where two people had died shortly after having their shots.</p>\n<p>The WHO appealed to countries not to suspend vaccinations against a disease that has caused more than 2.7 million deaths worldwide. WHO Director-General Tedros said systems were in place to protect public health.</p>\n<p>“This does not necessarily mean these events are linked to COVID-19 vaccination, but it’s routine practice to investigate them, and it shows that the surveillance system works and that effective controls are in place,” he told the media briefing.</p>\n<p>The United Kingdom said it had no concerns, while Poland said it thought the benefits outweighed any risks.</p>\n<p>The EMA has said that as of March 10, a total of 30 cases of blood clotting had been reported among close to 5 million people vaccinated with the AstraZeneca shot in the European Economic Area, which links 30 European countries.</p>\n<p>Michael Head, a senior research fellow in global health at the University of Southampton, said the decisions by France, Germany and others looked baffling.</p>\n<p>“The data we have suggests that numbers of adverse events related to blood clots are the same (and possibly, in fact lower) in vaccinated groups compared to unvaccinated populations,” he said, adding that halting a vaccination programme had consequences.</p>\n<p>“This results in delays in protecting people, and the potential for increased vaccine hesitancy, as a result of people who have seen the headlines and understandably become concerned. There are no signs yet of any data that really justify these decisions.”</p>\n<p>A senior German infectious diseases physician, however, said the background incidence of 2-5 thromboses per million per year was significantly lower than the number of 7 out of 1.6 million vaccinated people cited by Germany’s health ministry.</p>\n<p>“This should be the reason to suspend the vaccination in Germany until all cases, including suspected cases in Germany and Europe, have been completely cleared up,” said Clemens Wendtner, head of the special unit for highly contagious life threatening infections at the Schwabing Clinic in Munich.</p>\n<p><b>‘UNUSUAL’ SYMPTOMS</b></p>\n<p>AstraZeneca’s shot was among the first and cheapest to be developed and launched at volume since the coronavirus was first identified in central China at the end of 2019, and is set to be the mainstay of vaccination programmes in much of the developing world.</p>\n<p>Thailand announced plans on Monday to go ahead with the Anglo-Swedish firm’s shot after suspending its use on Friday, but Indonesia said it would wait for the WHO to report.</p>\n<p>The WHO said its advisory panel was reviewing reports related to the shot and would release its findings as soon as possible. But it said it was unlikely to change its recommendations, issued last month, for widespread use, including in countries where the South African variant of the virus may reduce its efficacy.</p>\n<p>The EMA has also said there was no indication the events were caused by the vaccination and that the number of reported blood clots was no higher than seen in the general population.</p>\n<p>But the handful of reported side-effects in Europe have upset vaccination programmes already stumbling over slow rollouts and vaccine scepticism in some countries.</p>\n<p>The Netherlands said on Monday it had seen 10 cases of possible noteworthy adverse side-effects from the AstraZeneca shot, hours after putting its vaccination programme on hold following reports of potential side-effects in other countries.</p>\n<p>Recent information indicates “a very special, rarely occurring form of thrombosis, of which some cases appear to have occurred shortly after vaccination. This is of course suspicious and should be investigated,” said Anke Huckriede, vaccinology professor at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.</p>\n<p>Denmark reported “highly unusual” symptoms in a 60-year-old citizen who died from a blood clot after receiving the vaccine, the same phrase used on Saturday by Norway about three people under the age of 50 it said were being treated in hospital.</p>\n<p>One of the three health workers hospitalised in Norway after receiving the AstraZeneca shot had died, health authorities said on Monday, but there was no evidence the vaccine was the cause.</p>\n<p>AstraZeneca said earlier it had conducted a review covering more than 17 million people vaccinated in the EU and the UK which had shown no evidence of an increased risk of blood clots.</p>\n<p>Long-awaited results from AstraZeneca’s 30,000-person U.S. vaccine trial are now being reviewed by independent monitors to determine whether the shot is safe and effective, a top U.S. official said on Monday.</p>","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Iceland and Bulgaria followed suit and Ireland and the Netherlands announced suspensions on Sunday.</p>\n<p>Spain will stop using the vaccine for at least 15 days, Cadena Ser radio reported, citing unnamed sources.</p>\n<p>The top WHO scientist reiterated on Monday that there have been no documented deaths linked to COVID-19 vaccines.</p>\n<p>“We do not want people to panic,” Soumya Swaminathan said on a virtual media briefing, adding there has been no association, so far, pinpointed between so-called “thromboembolic events” reported in some countries and COVID-19 shots.</p>\n<p>WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said an advisory committee meeting on AstraZeneca would be held on Tuesday. EU medicines regulator EMA will also convene this week to assess the information gathered into whether the AstraZeneca shot contributed to thromboembolic events in those inoculated.</p>\n<p>The moves by some of Europe’s largest and most populous countries will deepen concerns about the slow rollout of vaccines in the region, which has been plagued by shortages due to problems producing vaccines, including AstraZeneca’s.</p>\n<p>Germany warned last week it was facing a third wave of infections, Italy is intensifying lockdowns and hospitals in the Paris region are close to being overloaded.</p>\n<p>German Health Minister Jens Spahn said that although the risk of blood clots was low, it could not be ruled out.</p>\n<p>“This is a professional decision, not a political one,” Spahn said, adding he was following a recommendation of the Paul Ehrlich Institute, Germany’s vaccine regulator.</p>\n<p>France said it was suspending the vaccine’s use pending an assessment by EMA.</p>\n<p>“The decision taken, in conformity also with our European policy, is to suspend, out of precaution, vaccination with the AZ shot, hoping that we can resume quickly if the EMA’s guidance allows,” French President Emmanuel Macron said.</p>\n<p>Italy said its halt was a “precautionary and temporary measure” pending EMA’s ruling.</p>\n<p>“The EMA will meet soon to clarify any doubts so that the AstraZeneca vaccine can be resumed safely in the vaccination campaign as soon as possible,” said Gianni Rezza, Director General of Prevention at Italy’s Ministry of Health.</p>\n<p>Austria and Spain have stopped using particular batches and prosecutors in the northern Italian region of Piedmont earlier seized 393,600 doses following the death of a man hours after he was vaccinated. It was the second region to do so after Sicily, where two people had died shortly after having their shots.</p>\n<p>The WHO appealed to countries not to suspend vaccinations against a disease that has caused more than 2.7 million deaths worldwide. WHO Director-General Tedros said systems were in place to protect public health.</p>\n<p>“This does not necessarily mean these events are linked to COVID-19 vaccination, but it’s routine practice to investigate them, and it shows that the surveillance system works and that effective controls are in place,” he told the media briefing.</p>\n<p>The United Kingdom said it had no concerns, while Poland said it thought the benefits outweighed any risks.</p>\n<p>The EMA has said that as of March 10, a total of 30 cases of blood clotting had been reported among close to 5 million people vaccinated with the AstraZeneca shot in the European Economic Area, which links 30 European countries.</p>\n<p>Michael Head, a senior research fellow in global health at the University of Southampton, said the decisions by France, Germany and others looked baffling.</p>\n<p>“The data we have suggests that numbers of adverse events related to blood clots are the same (and possibly, in fact lower) in vaccinated groups compared to unvaccinated populations,” he said, adding that halting a vaccination programme had consequences.</p>\n<p>“This results in delays in protecting people, and the potential for increased vaccine hesitancy, as a result of people who have seen the headlines and understandably become concerned. High-growth stocks are facing steeper hurdles from rising bond yields. Investors appear to be rotating from growth to value and into sectors with more exposure to a cyclical economic recovery.</p><p>Quite simply, fatigue may be setting into overcrowded trades and investment themes—whether those are alternative-meat producers, a travel recovery, green energy, or the continued domination of Big Tech.</p><p>Against that backdrop, investors may want to tread cautiously. One way to do so: Avoid stocks with low earnings quality and high short interest—meaning there are short positions, or bearish bets, on a large percentage of a company’s shares outstanding. (A short position is when investors borrow and then sell shares, betting that a stock’s price will fall so they can buy shares back at a cheaper price.) Stocks with that combination of attributes may be most at risk of underperforming or blowing up, according to Wolfe Research.</p><p>The firm ranks stocks on a relative basis within sectors by scoring earnings quality on seven financial measures, while also looking at valuation and sentiment indicators, based on fourth-quarter financials.</p><p>Wolfe calls stocks scoring in the bottom 10% of earnings quality, while also seeing high short interest, “our highest conviction cohort of stocks to avoid.”</p><p>One caveat: Low-quality stocks have been a popular trade—fueled by ample market liquidity and demand for riskier assets. High short interest also primes a stock for a short-squeeze, whereby traders who are short buy the stock to cover their positions, exerting upward pressure on the price. Nothing illustrates that dynamic more than the frenzied trading around GameStop (ticker: GME) this year.</p><p>Beauty products maker Coty (COTY), for example, shows up on Wolfe’s screen. But it may have already had its blowup, falling 15% the day it released its earnings report in February. Barron’s was bullish on the stock in the aftermath, and it has been moving up since then.</p><p>Nonetheless, plenty of other stocks on Wolfe’s watch list do seem vulnerable. Many have surged in a reopening trade or company-specific dynamics, and all trade at steep valuations. Here are 10 stocks from Wolfe’s list:</p><p>Carvana (CVNA), for instance, has been a blockbuster, gaining 535% over the last 52 weeks. Investors appear to have decided that it is a disruptive force in car buying and that a pandemic-fueled shift to online sales has accelerated its momentum. However, Carvana isn’t close to reporting a profit, and is expected to lose $1.96 a share this year and 97 cents in 2022.</p><p>The stock is up around 11% this year, but it has been wobbling lately and is down from its 52-week high around $315, trading recently at $287. Short interest is high at 22% of the shares outstanding, according to FactSet.</p><p>Expedia Group (EXPE) has surged 32% this year. Investors expect online bookings volume to soar as consumers head for vacations this summer and fall. Wall Street doesn’t see Expedia Group earning a profit this year but expects big gains in 2022 with earnings per share of $6.04. At recent prices around $175, shares trade at 28 times 2022 earnings, a 40% premium to the S&amp;P 500 ‘s multiple of 20 times.</p><p>Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) is also trading on hopes for a travel rebound in 2022. Wall Street expects revenues of $1.6 billion this year, up from $1.3 billion in 2020. But the stock is riding on expectations of a surge to $6 billion in revenue in 2022. Analysts are looking for earnings of 62 cents a share in 2022, up from an expected loss of $5.87 a share this year. The stock has climbed 218% in the last 52 weeks, and it is powering ahead this year, up 21% so far.</p><p>It’s hardly cheap, though, at 50 times estimated 2022 profits. About 13% of the shares are held short, according to FactSet.</p><p>Lyft (LYFT) also fits into the reopening theme; shares are up 178% in the last 52 weeks, including a 35% gain this year. Ride-sharing could pick up as more people head to work, meetings, and evenings out.</p><p>However, Lyft and its chief rival Uber Technologies (UBER) face rising labor costs and regulatory hurdles in Europe and other regions. Wall Street sees Lyft losing $1.08 a share this year and turning a modest profit of 17 cents in 2022. That gives it a multiple of 379 times 2022 earnings. Short interest is around 9%.</p><p>Restoration Hardware parent Restoration Hardware (RH) has been a stay-at-home winner. The stock soared 338% over the last year and it’s ahead 5% this year. The company is profitable, expected to earn $19.17 a share this year, up from an estimated $17.05 in 2020. But the stock hit a rough patch in early March as high-growth, high-multiple stocks sold off.</p><p>RH trades at 22 times 2022 earnings, which doesn’t look excessive. But It is now vulnerable to a blowup, according to Wolfe, with short-interest at 11% of the float.</p><p>Beyond Meat (BYND) has long been a battleground between alt-meat bulls and bears. The stock has surged 93% over the last 52 weeks, defying the bears, but at recent prices around $142, it’s off 36% from its 52-week high of $221.</p><p>The alt-meat trend is going strong, and Beyond is working its way into more restaurants and supermarkets, while expanding its product line. But alt-meat rivals are gaining traction. Beyond’s profits aren’t expected to roll in until 2022, when the firm is anticipated to earn 23 cents a share. At that level of profit, the stock trades at 621 times earnings.</p><p>Stocks like Beyond trade on underlying business momentum, making earnings less of a share-price driver. Still, it isn’t encouraging that Wall Street sees the losses piling up. Per-share estimates for 2021 have been lowered 12% in the last week, according to FactSet, and 2021 estimates are down 190% in the past three months.</p><p>Meanwhile, First Solar (FSLR) is riding a wave of investor demand for green stocks from ESG funds and others looking for exposure to clean energy. The company, which makes solar power systems and modules, has gained 124% over the last 52 weeks. The company has reported strong sales and bookings, but the stock is also baking in friendly climate policies from the Biden administration.</p><p>The stock has been wavering, however, after its big run. It has slumped 17% this year and it’s off more than 20% from 52-week highs around $112, recently trading around $82. Despite a favorable backdrop for green energy, First Solar’s sales and earnings are expected to fall slightly from 2021 to 2022. The stock trades at 24 times 2022 earnings, a premium to the market.</p><p>Other large-cap stocks that make Wolfe’s blowup watch list include BioMarin Pharmaceutical (BMRN), Zendesk (ZEN), and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). Zendesk and AMD are each up more than 100% over the last year, while BioMarin has been flat. High-growth stocks are facing steeper hurdles from rising bond yields. Investors appear to be rotating from growth to value and into sectors with more exposure to a cyclical economic recovery.Quite simply, fatigue may be setting into overcrowded trades and investment themes—whether those are alternative-meat producers, a travel recovery, green energy, or the continued domination of Big Tech.Against that backdrop, investors may want to tread cautiously. One way to do so: Avoid stocks with low earnings quality and high short interest—meaning there are short positions, or bearish bets, on a large percentage of a company’s shares outstanding. (A short position is when investors borrow and then sell shares, betting that a stock’s price will fall so they can buy shares back at a cheaper price.) Stocks with that combination of attributes may be most at risk of underperforming or blowing up, according to Wolfe Research.The firm ranks stocks on a relative basis within sectors by scoring earnings quality on seven financial measures, while also looking at valuation and sentiment indicators, based on fourth-quarter financials.Wolfe calls stocks scoring in the bottom 10% of earnings quality, while also seeing high short interest, “our highest conviction cohort of stocks to avoid.”One caveat: Low-quality stocks have been a popular trade—fueled by ample market liquidity and demand for riskier assets. High short interest also primes a stock for a short-squeeze, whereby traders who are short buy the stock to cover their positions, exerting upward pressure on the price. Nothing illustrates that dynamic more than the frenzied trading around GameStop (ticker: GME) this year.Beauty products maker Coty (COTY), for example, shows up on Wolfe’s screen. But it may have already had its blowup, falling 15% the day it released its earnings report in February. Barron’s was bullish on the stock in the aftermath, and it has been moving up since then.Nonetheless, plenty of other stocks on Wolfe’s watch list do seem vulnerable. Many have surged in a reopening trade or company-specific dynamics, and all trade at steep valuations. Here are 10 stocks from Wolfe’s list:Carvana (CVNA), for instance, has been a blockbuster, gaining 535% over the last 52 weeks. Investors appear to have decided that it is a disruptive force in car buying and that a pandemic-fueled shift to online sales has accelerated its momentum. However, Carvana isn’t close to reporting a profit, and is expected to lose $1.96 a share this year and 97 cents in 2022.The stock is up around 11% this year, but it has been wobbling lately and is down from its 52-week high around $315, trading recently at $287. Short interest is high at 22% of the shares outstanding, according to FactSet.Expedia Group (EXPE) has surged 32% this year. Investors expect online bookings volume to soar as consumers head for vacations this summer and fall. Wall Street doesn’t see Expedia Group earning a profit this year but expects big gains in 2022 with earnings per share of $6.04. At recent prices around $175, shares trade at 28 times 2022 earnings, a 40% premium to the S&P 500 ‘s multiple of 20 times.Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) is also trading on hopes for a travel rebound in 2022. Wall Street expects revenues of $1.6 billion this year, up from $1.3 billion in 2020. But the stock is riding on expectations of a surge to $6 billion in revenue in 2022. Analysts are looking for earnings of 62 cents a share in 2022, up from an expected loss of $5.87 a share this year. The stock has climbed 218% in the last 52 weeks, and it is powering ahead this year, up 21% so far.It’s hardly cheap, though, at 50 times estimated 2022 profits. About 13% of the shares are held short, according to FactSet.Lyft (LYFT) also fits into the reopening theme; shares are up 178% in the last 52 weeks, including a 35% gain this year. Ride-sharing could pick up as more people head to work, meetings, and evenings out.However, Lyft and its chief rival Uber Technologies (UBER) face rising labor costs and regulatory hurdles in Europe and other regions. Wall Street sees Lyft losing $1.08 a share this year and turning a modest profit of 17 cents in 2022. That gives it a multiple of 379 times 2022 earnings. Short interest is around 9%.Restoration Hardware parent Restoration Hardware (RH) has been a stay-at-home winner. The stock soared 338% over the last year and it’s ahead 5% this year. The company is profitable, expected to earn $19.17 a share this year, up from an estimated $17.05 in 2020. But the stock hit a rough patch in early March as high-growth, high-multiple stocks sold off.RH trades at 22 times 2022 earnings, which doesn’t look excessive. But It is now vulnerable to a blowup, according to Wolfe, with short-interest at 11% of the float.Beyond Meat (BYND) has long been a battleground between alt-meat bulls and bears. The stock has surged 93% over the last 52 weeks, defying the bears, but at recent prices around $142, it’s off 36% from its 52-week high of $221.The alt-meat trend is going strong, and Beyond is working its way into more restaurants and supermarkets, while expanding its product line. But alt-meat rivals are gaining traction. Beyond’s profits aren’t expected to roll in until 2022, when the firm is anticipated to earn 23 cents a share. At that level of profit, the stock trades at 621 times earnings.Stocks like Beyond trade on underlying business momentum, making earnings less of a share-price driver. Still, it isn’t encouraging that Wall Street sees the losses piling up. Per-share estimates for 2021 have been lowered 12% in the last week, according to FactSet, and 2021 estimates are down 190% in the past three months.Meanwhile, First Solar (FSLR) is riding a wave of investor demand for green stocks from ESG funds and others looking for exposure to clean energy. The company, which makes solar power systems and modules, has gained 124% over the last 52 weeks. The company has reported strong sales and bookings, but the stock is also baking in friendly climate policies from the Biden administration.The stock has been wavering, however, after its big run. It has slumped 17% this year and it’s off more than 20% from 52-week highs around $112, recently trading around $82. Despite a favorable backdrop for green energy, First Solar’s sales and earnings are expected to fall slightly from 2021 to 2022. The stock trades at 24 times 2022 earnings, a premium to the market.Other large-cap stocks that make Wolfe’s blowup watch list include BioMarin Pharmaceutical (BMRN), Zendesk (ZEN), and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).
