This is not a good scenario for stocks.</p>\n<p>There is an old adage that it is not good for the market if the Generals are out in front of the Army (the “Generals” being General Motors, General Electric, etc. – i.e., the mainstays of the Dow of days gone by; the “Army” being the main body of stocks). The point is that if the advance is narrow and limited to the largest institutional stocks, then trouble lies ahead.</p>\n<p>It is a good point, but too vague to implement as a trading system. We would normally see that reflected in breadth (which is now giving a sell signal) and new highs vs. new lows (which is also on a sell signal).</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c46ab28413e089cb3da5f328292ad4e7\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"465\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">LAWRENCE MCMILLAN</p>\n<p>One positive thing is that the SPX chart is still in an uptrend, as the moving averages and “modified Bollinger Bands” are still trending higher. However, if the S&amp;P breaks through support at 3,870, that uptrend would be called into question. As one can see from the accompanying chart, there is further support near 3,725. If that is broken, the bears would clearly be in charge. Meanwhile, the recent all-time highs, at 3,985, represent resistance.</p>\n<p>What is different today compared to previous minor pullbacks is that several of our internal indicators have weakened considerably and are on sell signals: breadth, new highs vs. new lows, and equity-only put-call ratios.</p>\n<p>Equity-only put-call ratios remain on sell signals that were first generated in mid-February and that have strengthened by beginning to rise rapidly.&nbsp;They are still relatively low on their charts, meaning that there is a lot of room to move higher before one might say they are “oversold.”</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bfd689fa18eceb515c752afa1cb024f7\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"465\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">LAWRENCE MCMILLAN<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9216bd23616405d8464aa44f5baea259\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"460\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">LAWRENCE MCMILLAN</p>\n<p>Breadth has deteriorated badly over the past two weeks – especially this last week. Sell signals were generated by the breadth oscillators on March 18 and March 19, and those oscillators have plunged since then.&nbsp;The “stocks only” breadth oscillator has already descended into oversold territory, but “oversold doesn’t mean buy.”</p>\n<p>The NYSE breadth oscillator is also moving lower, but at a much slower pace, since the more positive “Dow-type” stocks have a heavier weight in that oscillator.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile, cumulative breadth has fallen sharply as well. That is not a signal, but it is worth noting that the “stocks only” cumulative advance-decline line has fallen almost 10,000 issues since the cumulative A-D line reached an all-time high on March 15 (that is, over that time, summing the daily figures, declines have outnumbered advances by 10,000 issues).</p>\n<p>A significant development has also occurred in the case of the “new highs vs. new lows” indicator. On March 23, new 52-week lows outnumbered new 52-week highs andnew 52-week lows numbered more than 100 issues — the first time that has happened since last May.&nbsp;That was the case again on March 24.&nbsp;That places this indicator on a sell signal until new highs take control once again.</p>\n<p>Countering the negativity of put-call ratios, breadth, and new highs vs. new lows, is the fact that the volatility indicators still remain generally bullish. VIX has not risen substantially (yet), so the “spike peak” buy signal of March 4 remains in place.</p>\n<p>Moreover, the trend of VIXVIX,-6.56%continues to be lower, as both VIX and its 20-day moving average are below the declining 200-day moving average. In fact, on March 22, VIX closed at its lowest price (18.88) since February 2020.</p>\n<p>If VIX should continue to fall below there, it would be a bullish sign for stocks.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c5d40b1aedd4e9457306d25814439c92\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"465\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">LAWRENCE MCMILLAN</p>\n<p>As we’ve noted previously, the fact that VIX has remained so high all during the huge rally over the past year has been a worrisome sign for many traders. But the traders that were keeping VIX higher were actually correct, because realized volatility of SPX (i.e., its 20-day historical volatility) has been just below 20 since early March. Thus, realized volatility rose to meet implied volatility, rather than the other way around (which is more often the case).</p>\n<p>Now, if one wants to make the case that it is worrisome to see both forms of volatility this high, then so be it. But there is no longer any significant difference between the S&amp;P’s realized and implied volatility.</p>\n<p>The construct of volatility derivatives has remained bullish throughout.&nbsp;VIX futures are all trading at premiums to VIX, and the term structure slopes upward through the coming summer. Similarly, the term structure of the CBOE Volatility Indices slopes upward through the next six months as well.</p>\n<p>The first sign of a negative reversal here would be if the April VIX futures traded above the price of May VIX futures.</p>\n<p>Near-term deterioration in some internal indicators is certainly a cause for worry, and small countertrend bearish positions can be taken because of that. However, the S&amp;P’s trend is still higher, and the trend of VIX is still lower – both bullish factors. This is not a good scenario for stocks.\nThere is an old adage that it is not good for the market if the Generals are out in front of the Army (the “Generals” being General Motors, General Electric, etc. – i.e., the mainstays of the Dow of days gone by; the “Army” being the main body of stocks). The point is that if the advance is narrow and limited to the largest institutional stocks, then trouble lies ahead.\nIt is a good point, but too vague to implement as a trading system. We would normally see that reflected in breadth (which is now giving a sell signal) and new highs vs. new lows (which is also on a sell signal).\nLAWRENCE MCMILLAN\nOne positive thing is that the SPX chart is still in an uptrend, as the moving averages and “modified Bollinger Bands” are still trending higher. However, if the S&P breaks through support at 3,870, that uptrend would be called into question. As one can see from the accompanying chart, there is further support near 3,725. If that is broken, the bears would clearly be in charge. Meanwhile, the recent all-time highs, at 3,985, represent resistance.\nWhat is different today compared to previous minor pullbacks is that several of our internal indicators have weakened considerably and are on sell signals: breadth, new highs vs. new lows, and equity-only put-call ratios.\nEquity-only put-call ratios remain on sell signals that were first generated in mid-February and that have strengthened by beginning to rise rapidly. They are still relatively low on their charts, meaning that there is a lot of room to move higher before one might say they are “oversold.”\nLAWRENCE MCMILLANLAWRENCE MCMILLAN\nBreadth has deteriorated badly over the past two weeks – especially this last week. Sell signals were generated by the breadth oscillators on March 18 and March 19, and those oscillators have plunged since then. The “stocks only” breadth oscillator has already descended into oversold territory, but “oversold doesn’t mean buy.”\nThe NYSE breadth oscillator is also moving lower, but at a much slower pace, since the more positive “Dow-type” stocks have a heavier weight in that oscillator.\nMeanwhile, cumulative breadth has fallen sharply as well. That is not a signal, but it is worth noting that the “stocks only” cumulative advance-decline line has fallen almost 10,000 issues since the cumulative A-D line reached an all-time high on March 15 (that is, over that time, summing the daily figures, declines have outnumbered advances by 10,000 issues).\nA significant development has also occurred in the case of the “new highs vs. new lows” indicator. On March 23, new 52-week lows outnumbered new 52-week highs andnew 52-week lows numbered more than 100 issues — the first time that has happened since last May. That was the case again on March 24. That places this indicator on a sell signal until new highs take control once again.\nCountering the negativity of put-call ratios, breadth, and new highs vs. new lows, is the fact that the volatility indicators still remain generally bullish. VIX has not risen substantially (yet), so the “spike peak” buy signal of March 4 remains in place.\nMoreover, the trend of VIXVIX,-6.56%continues to be lower, as both VIX and its 20-day moving average are below the declining 200-day moving average. In fact, on March 22, VIX closed at its lowest price (18.88) since February 2020.\nIf VIX should continue to fall below there, it would be a bullish sign for stocks.\nLAWRENCE MCMILLAN\nAs we’ve noted previously, the fact that VIX has remained so high all during the huge rally over the past year has been a worrisome sign for many traders. But the traders that were keeping VIX higher were actually correct, because realized volatility of SPX (i.e., its 20-day historical volatility) has been just below 20 since early March. Thus, realized volatility rose to meet implied volatility, rather than the other way around (which is more often the case).\nNow, if one wants to make the case that it is worrisome to see both forms of volatility this high, then so be it. But there is no longer any significant difference between the S&P’s realized and implied volatility.\nThe construct of volatility derivatives has remained bullish throughout. VIX futures are all trading at premiums to VIX, and the term structure slopes upward through the coming summer. Similarly, the term structure of the CBOE Volatility Indices slopes upward through the next six months as well.\nThe first sign of a negative reversal here would be if the April VIX futures traded above the price of May VIX futures.\nNear-term deterioration in some internal indicators is certainly a cause for worry, and small countertrend bearish positions can be taken because of that. However, the S&P’s trend is still higher, and the trend of VIX is still lower – both bullish factors. Its share price has had a spectacular growth in 2020 (rising by about 400%), primarily because of the pandemic, which has benefited from the surge in demand for all its digital businesses. This accelerated growth is unlikely to be repeated in 2021. However, 2021 will continue to usher in strong growth because of increasing online demand in the region.</p>\n<p>Sea is a promising company and has the potential to become one of the largest companies in ASEAN because of its strong appetite for growth and expansion. It is already three times the size of Singapore Telecommunication corporation and twice that of PTT (Thai Petroleum) by enterprise value.</p>\n<p>Sea’s future share price movement would depend on further increases in revenue growth and new revenue streams. However, it has significant risks and challenges from competition. At the current share price, Sea is 34% over valued (see annex 1) and is trading at 27 times of sales (2.5 times the average of its competitors, see annex 2). However, Sea’s good growth prospects within the next 2 years justify its price.</p>\n<p>Sea’s three core businesses (gaming, e-commerce and financial services) have been growing rapidly (160% year-on-year by revenue). The revenue stream to watch in 2021 is its fintech arm (i.e. SeaMoney), which is currently contributing only one percent to Sea’s overall revenue. It has been awarded a banking licence by the Monetary Authority of Singapore in 2020 (1 of 2 awardees) and acquired Bank Kesejahteraan Ekonomi (in Indonesia) in January 2021. Its financial services business is well positioned for a prospective growth towards the end of 2021 and into 2022. SeaMoney on its own could potentially add an additional $15 per share to Sea’s overall share price by end of 2021 (based on fundamental discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation with ADYEN’s historical data as a comparator).</p>\n<p><b>Overview</b></p>\n<p>The bulk of Sea’s business is in Southeast Asia. It operates in three key busines segments, through Garena (digital gaming), Shopee (e-commerce), and SeaMoney (digital financial services). Despite its rapid regional expansion, it has not yet generated profit. This situation is normal for businesses such as Sea, which has been focusing on building market position and expansion. Sea benefited from the COVID-19 pandemic, which accelerated its growth due to the surge in demand for its digital businesses.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation of Sea Ltd</b></p>\n<p>Determining a value for Sea is difficult at this point in time as the future potential of SeaMoney has yet to take shape. However, a ten-year DCF projection based on the company’s past performance can be used to determine a minimum intrinsic share price value without the growth contribution of SeaMoney (see figure 1 and table 1). Based on the DCF valuation, a $155.99 share price can be considered a low estimate for Sea. It is one of the largest and fastest growing regions in the world (4.9% per year in the four next years) with a population of 670 million people and a GDP of $4.7 trillion by 2025 (more than that of India). The region’s internet economy has more than tripled over the past four years, reaching $100 billion in 2019 and is expected to grow to $300 billion by 2025 (a 20% CAGR) according to the&nbsp;Google, Temasek and Bain, e-Conomy SEA 2020 annual report. Digital financial services are another promising market for the region as it is expected to grow to $1 trillion by 2025, accounting for half the money transactions conducted in Southeast Asia.</p>\n<p>Sea has multiple revenue streams, and the company has ample opportunities to explore new revenue streams and enhance synergistic advantages. Garena is already profitable and is an exclusive distributor of Tencent Games in Southeast Asia. It has been expanding in game development. This business segment is bank rolling Shopee and SeaMoney. The latter has the potential to contribute to Sea’s future growth. It is currently contributing only 1 percent of Sea’s revenue (see figure 1). They include the following:</p>\n<ol>\n <li><i>Existing competition (high impact):</i>Given the attractiveness of the markets that Sea participates in, there is fierce competition (especially in e-commerce and fintech) from other players such as Lazada, Grab, Gojek, Tokopedia and Bukalapak. This competitive pressure put into question Sea’s future growth and profits.</li>\n <li><i>New competition Gojek/Tokopedia merger (high impact):</i>In January 2021, Gojek and Grab merger talks fell apart. Currently, Gojek and Tokopedia are in the process to merge to form a $40 billion powerhouse and Grab is seeking IPO. The anticipated new entity (Gojek &amp; Tokopedia) will be a formidable competitor to Sea in Indonesia, given Gojek’s and Tokopedia’s extensive business networks in the region.</li>\n <li><i>Financial risk (moderate impact):</i>Sea has been increasing its debt leverage, at US$1.92 billion (September 2020) – an increase of US$470.6 million in a year. However, it also has US$3.55 billion in cash, leading to a US$1.63 billion net cash position. While Sea is losing money, it has generated positive free cash flow of US$96 million (September 2020) and therefore has limited short-term balance sheet risk.</li>\n <li><i>Sustainability (high impact):</i>Sea has not been profitable in the past five years and will not be until 2022. It has been using the profits from Garena (its only profitable business segment) to finance the expansion of its e-commerce and Fintech businesses.</li>\n <li><i>Over-valuation (moderate impact):</i>Sea is currently trading at a price-to-sales ratio of 27 times. This ratio is high as compared with Tencent Holdings at 11 times, Alibaba at 10 times and Meituan at 15 times. Although justifiable, this is a high premium to take on.</li>\n <li><i>Regulations (high impact):</i>Sea is subject to government regulations. Its financial services business is especially susceptible to regulatory changes. This can be further complicated by the number of countries it operates in. However, the author believes that the company will overcome most of its challenge and strengthen its position as one of the dominant digital players in Southeast Asia. Investors should consider buying Sea as a long-term investment and with the strategy to buy the share when it dips in price and to slowly increase their position over time.</p>\n<p>Sea is one of the most exciting stories to watch. Key issues to follow closely are the company’s growth, SeaMoney development and rising challenges for competitors. Its share price has had a spectacular growth in 2020 (rising by about 400%), primarily because of the pandemic, which has benefited from the surge in demand for all its digital businesses. This accelerated growth is unlikely to be repeated in 2021. However, 2021 will continue to usher in strong growth because of increasing online demand in the region.\nSea is a promising company and has the potential to become one of the largest companies in ASEAN because of its strong appetite for growth and expansion. It is already three times the size of Singapore Telecommunication corporation and twice that of PTT (Thai Petroleum) by enterprise value.\nSea’s future share price movement would depend on further increases in revenue growth and new revenue streams. However, it has significant risks and challenges from competition. At the current share price, Sea is 34% over valued (see annex 1) and is trading at 27 times of sales (2.5 times the average of its competitors, see annex 2). However, Sea’s good growth prospects within the next 2 years justify its price.\nSea’s three core businesses (gaming, e-commerce and financial services) have been growing rapidly (160% year-on-year by revenue). The revenue stream to watch in 2021 is its fintech arm (i.e. SeaMoney), which is currently contributing only one percent to Sea’s overall revenue. It has been awarded a banking licence by the Monetary Authority of Singapore in 2020 (1 of 2 awardees) and acquired Bank Kesejahteraan Ekonomi (in Indonesia) in January 2021. Its financial services business is well positioned for a prospective growth towards the end of 2021 and into 2022. SeaMoney on its own could potentially add an additional $15 per share to Sea’s overall share price by end of 2021 (based on fundamental discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation with ADYEN’s historical data as a comparator).\nOverview\nThe bulk of Sea’s business is in Southeast Asia. It operates in three key busines segments, through Garena (digital gaming), Shopee (e-commerce), and SeaMoney (digital financial services). Despite its rapid regional expansion, it has not yet generated profit. This situation is normal for businesses such as Sea, which has been focusing on building market position and expansion. Sea benefited from the COVID-19 pandemic, which accelerated its growth due to the surge in demand for its digital businesses.\nValuation of Sea Ltd\nDetermining a value for Sea is difficult at this point in time as the future potential of SeaMoney has yet to take shape. However, a ten-year DCF projection based on the company’s past performance can be used to determine a minimum intrinsic share price value without the growth contribution of SeaMoney (see figure 1 and table 1). Based on the DCF valuation, a $155.99 share price can be considered a low estimate for Sea. It is one of the largest and fastest growing regions in the world (4.9% per year in the four next years) with a population of 670 million people and a GDP of $4.7 trillion by 2025 (more than that of India). The region’s internet economy has more than tripled over the past four years, reaching $100 billion in 2019 and is expected to grow to $300 billion by 2025 (a 20% CAGR) according to the Google, Temasek and Bain, e-Conomy SEA 2020 annual report. Digital financial services are another promising market for the region as it is expected to grow to $1 trillion by 2025, accounting for half the money transactions conducted in Southeast Asia.\nSea has multiple revenue streams, and the company has ample opportunities to explore new revenue streams and enhance synergistic advantages. Garena is already profitable and is an exclusive distributor of Tencent Games in Southeast Asia. It has been expanding in game development. This business segment is bank rolling Shopee and SeaMoney. The latter has the potential to contribute to Sea’s future growth. It is currently contributing only 1 percent of Sea’s revenue (see figure 1). They include the following:\n\nExisting competition (high impact):Given the attractiveness of the markets that Sea participates in, there is fierce competition (especially in e-commerce and fintech) from other players such as Lazada, Grab, Gojek, Tokopedia and Bukalapak. This competitive pressure put into question Sea’s future growth and profits.\nNew competition Gojek/Tokopedia merger (high impact):In January 2021, Gojek and Grab merger talks fell apart. Currently, Gojek and Tokopedia are in the process to merge to form a $40 billion powerhouse and Grab is seeking IPO. The anticipated new entity (Gojek & Tokopedia) will be a formidable competitor to Sea in Indonesia, given Gojek’s and Tokopedia’s extensive business networks in the region.\nFinancial risk (moderate impact):Sea has been increasing its debt leverage, at US$1.92 billion (September 2020) – an increase of US$470.6 million in a year. However, it also has US$3.55 billion in cash, leading to a US$1.63 billion net cash position. While Sea is losing money, it has generated positive free cash flow of US$96 million (September 2020) and therefore has limited short-term balance sheet risk.\nSustainability (high impact):Sea has not been profitable in the past five years and will not be until 2022. It has been using the profits from Garena (its only profitable business segment) to finance the expansion of its e-commerce and Fintech businesses.\nOver-valuation (moderate impact):Sea is currently trading at a price-to-sales ratio of 27 times. This ratio is high as compared with Tencent Holdings at 11 times, Alibaba at 10 times and Meituan at 15 times. Although justifiable, this is a high premium to take on.\nRegulations (high impact):Sea is subject to government regulations. Its financial services business is especially susceptible to regulatory changes. This can be further complicated by the number of countries it operates in. However, this is unlikely to be an issue in Singapore, Sea’s home country.\nShare dilution (moderate impact):Sea has been constantly diluting its shares to support the financing of its various business expansions (see table 2).\n\nTable 2: Sea’s shares\n\nConclusion\nSea Ltd is a potentially high rewarding long-term investment but has a considerable amount of risk. However, the author believes that the company will overcome most of its challenge and strengthen its position as one of the dominant digital players in Southeast Asia. Shares pared those gains during morning trade.\nUnlike initial public offerings, secondary listings may not be greeted with massive first-day rallies as shares of the company are already trading on another exchange.\nThe Hong Kong listing is a big moment for Baidu, China’s largest search engine. The company has had a rough couple years from mid-2018 and lagged behind rivals such asAlibabaandTencent. Baidu failed to move quickly asChinese users flocked to mobile search and a tough advertising market hurt the business.\nBut a turnaround, led by CEO Robin Li, has centered on convincing investors that the technology giant is a leader in artificial intelligence and autonomous driving in a bid to diversify its revenue stream beyond advertising. And that seems to paying off.\nIn mid-May 2018,Baidu’sU.S.-listed shares closed at $284.07 a share, a record high at the time. But the stock subsequently fell over 70% to a trough of $83.62 in March 2020 amid the stock market crash. That was the lowest close since April 2013.\nBut since the March 2020 low, shares have rallied over 200%. Baidu shares hit an all time high of $354.82 in February.\n“I think EV (electric vehicles) is part of the story. At the same time, cloud computing, integrating AI, these are all the areas where Baidu has been investing in very heavily really since 2014 and we’re just starting to see the fruits of those labors,” Brendan Ahern, chief investment officer at KraneShares, told “Squawk Box Asia” on Tuesday.\nBaidu has an autonomous driving system called Apollo which can be sold to automakers. The companystarted a standalone electric vehicle company in partnership with Chinese carmaker Geely. Baidu is also testing robotaxis in cities including in Beijing. And last month, the firm launched a smart transportation project in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, its biggest yet.\nJames Lee, U.S. and China internet analyst at Mizuho Securities, has a $350 price target on Baidu’s U.S.-listed shares, which is 31% higher than Monday’s closing price on Wall Street. He said that the autonomous driving business could be valued at $40 billion and that the Chinese government will continue to support this industry with favorable policies. Lee also said he expects Baidu’s advertising business to continue to gain momentum in the first quarter of this year.\n“We do like the fundamentals of the company and we continue to expect the Baidu shares will outperform the market,” Lee told “Street Signs Asia” on Tuesday.\nMeanwhile, Baidu has been looking to further diversify its revenue streams.
