POINTS\n\nWidely regarded as the \"crown jewel\" of the U.K. tech industry, Arm has co-founded the accelerator, known as Deeptech Labs, with the University of Cambridge, private equity investor Cambridge Innovation Capital and venture firm Martlet Capital.\nSo-called deep tech companies aim to create new intellectual property by breaking technological ground in an effort to solve complex problems.\nWhile London is home to most of the U.K.'s tech companies, Cambridge has spawned some of the nation's most innovative firms that have caught the eye of U.S. tech giants.\n\nLONDON — U.K. chip designer Arm has co-founded a new start-up accelerator in Cambridge, England, to try and help young \"deep tech\" firms to grow into the next generation of tech giants.\nWidely regarded as the \"crown jewel\" of the U.K. tech industry, Arm has co-founded the accelerator, known as Deeptech Labs, with the University of Cambridge, private equity investor Cambridge Innovation Capital and venture firm Martlet Capital.\nSo-called deep tech companies aim to create new intellectual property by breaking technological ground in an effort to solve complex problems.\nAdam Bastin, VP of corporate development at Arm, said in a statement that Cambridge has \"remained a critical hub of talent, creativity and innovation\" from Arm's earliest days in a barn just outside the city back in the early 1980s.\n\"In co-founding Deeptech Labs, we're pleased to support the next generation of game-changing technology companies by helping them to access the world-class Cambridge technology ecosystem,\" he said.\nIn exchange for a chunk of equity, typically between 5% and 20%, Deeptech Labs offers start-ups £350,000 ($495,000), access to a three-month development program and networking opportunities.\nDeeptech Labs CEO Miles Kirby told CNBC on Friday: \"I've seen a lot of deep tech founders who are maybe academics or engineers, and they've got a great technology, but they really struggle to kind of go from a technology to a business.\"\nHe added: \"You see a lot of companies that fail in that seed-to-series-A stage, because they don't find the right market fit, or they don't find the right business model. We're really helping to address that.\"\nKirby, who previously worked at Qualcomm for 18 years and ran an accelerator while he was there, said Deeptech Labs looked at around 900 companies for its initial cohort, before picking five: AutoFill, BKwai, Circuit Mind, Contilio, and Mindtech.\nCircuit Mind, for example, is aiming to build a platform that enables engineers to design circuit boards in just a few hours with the help of AI software, while Contilio is working on a 3D analytics platform to help the construction industry understand, predict and deliver complex construction projects cheaper, faster, and more sustainably.\nWhile London is home to most of the U.K.'s tech companies, Cambridge has spawned some of the nation's most innovative firms that have caught the eye of U.S. tech giants –Applebought speech tech firm VocalIQ in 2015 to improve Siri, whileAmazonbought Evi to boost Alexa in 2013. The city is also home to fast-growing start-ups like Darktrace, as well as sizableAmazonandMicrosoftresearch labs.\nThere are dozens of tech accelerators around the world. Y Combinator, which is whereAirbnb, Stripe and Reddit were born, is perhaps the most famous, butGoogle,Facebook,Microsoftand many other large tech companies have similar ventures. While they clearly have some benefits to founders, some have questioned whether entrepreneurs should sacrifice the equity or go it alone.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":642,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":195181170,"gmtCreate":1621262435190,"gmtModify":1634192933542,"author":{"id":"3575338121012336","authorId":"3575338121012336","name":"col","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5110a773428d8c8ea6479d5340108add","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3575338121012336","idStr":"3575338121012336"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"go are hot and bail just as quickly to cement your profits before moving on to the next meme stock.
\n
Obviously that's gambling, not investing. The real value comes from holding on to your stocks for years -- decades is best -- and watching as their businesses grow and appreciate. It's not as exciting as taking a flier on a WallStreetBets stock, but buying good companies that still possess long-term potential and never selling is how you really accumulate wealth. That's why I plan to hold these two stocks forever.
\n

\n
\n
1. Genuine Parts
\n
You may know aftermarket auto parts retailer Genuine Parts (NYSE:GPC) better as the owner of NAPA Auto Parts stores. It has a long history of outperformance with sales growing in 87 of the last 93 years (last year being one of those anomalies where revenue dropped, though for obvious reasons).
\n
Still, the long-term outlook remains not only positive, but quite upbeat. The auto industry was also hurt by the pandemic, which means people were buying new cars but keeping their rust buckets on the road longer and they'll need parts to keep them running.
\n
Worse for new car dealers, the computer chip shortage that's plaguing numerous industries, and the auto industry in particular, has manufacturers lowering expectations for production for the coming year. Ford just issued a fairly robust earnings report but its guidance that it expects production to fall by 1.1 million vehicles this year put a damper on its stock.
\n
Again, that means car owners will need to keep their current vehicles in good shape, so Genuine Parts will still be needed. And it's that constant ebb and flow of demand for people to fix their cars that has sustained the auto parts retailer over the past century, and will likely keep it motoring for at least another 100 years into the future. (Even if we're driving flying cars by then, owners will still need the parts to repair them.)
\n
One of the most attractive things about Genuine Parts, however, is its record of dividend payments. The company has paid investors a cash dividend every year since going public in 1928, and its payout this year of $3.26 per share represents the 65th consecutive year it increased the dividend, which currently yields 2.6% annually.
\n
2. Leggett & Platt
\n
Robinhood's meme stock crowd would probably never pile into Leggett & Platt (NYSE:LEG) because making innerspring coils for mattresses and sofas is not the sort of sexy play that pops up in internet chatrooms. Yet this study business has been around since 1883 and keeps chugging along largely out of view of the masses, but producing outsized returns for those in the know.
\n
Over the last 40 years, Leggett & Platt has returned almost 10,600% for investors, compared to nearly 3,800% by the S&P 500, meaning $10,000 invested in this oh-so-boring company at the start of 1980 would be worth well over $1 million today (the stock index would have generated $387,000 in the same time frame).
\n
Data by YCharts.
\n
Leggett & Platt has done that by sticking to its knitting, or rather its steel coils. It rarely extends far outside those operations, which account for half of its annual revenue, and when it does it tends to be in closely related fields.
\n
Beyond mattresses and sofas, the company supplies the auto and aerospace industries, furniture manufacturers, and flooring and textile businesses with products that are in some fashion closely related to its core components, such as mechanical and lumbar support for seats; steel mechanisms and motion hardware for chairs; and synthetic fabrics for ground stabilization, drainage protection, erosion, and weed control.
\n
Yet like Genuine Parts, Leggett & Platt is also a longtime dividend payer, and it notes that maintaining its inclusion in the list of Dividend Aristocrat stocks, or those companies that have increased their shareholder payout for 25 consecutive years or more, is a high priority for the company.
\n
The dividend actually ranks second on its list of priorities after investing in organic growth, and with 49 straight years of dividend hikes, Leggett & Platt is poised to become a Dividend King, or a company with 50 or more years of raising its payout (a much smaller elite group of stocks, of which Genuine Parts is also a member).
\n
Because it is a conservatively run business in a fairly conservative industry, there's little reason why it shouldn't be able to keep going as it has for many years to come, and that's why Leggett & Platt will remain in my portfolio forever.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Here Is What to Expect.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1131068131","media":"Barrons","summary":"Despite controversy, economic damage to online ads amid Covid-19 pandemic-related economic turmoil, ","content":"
Despite controversy, economic damage to online ads amid Covid-19 pandemic-related economic turmoil, and antitrust scrutiny, Facebook is expected to report another blockbuster quarter Wednesday.
\n
As demonstrated by powerful results last week from Snapchat maker Snap (ticker: SNAP), digital advertising is coming back, fast. Facebook (FB) stands to make even more money than Snap. Analysts expect a net profit of nearly $7 billion, which amounts to $2.61 a share, when Facebook reports results after the closing bell Wednesday.
\n
Including sales of its virtual reality hardware, and other devices—which are expected contribute to the estimated $452 million to the “Other” revenue segment—Facebook revenue is expected to rise roughly 33% to $23.71 billion. The ad business will contribute revenue of $23.29 billion.
\n
Facebook is expected to grow its user base by tens of millions as well. Analysts forecast its daily member count will rise to 1.87 billion, and monthly user base will top 2.83 billion. Its monthly user base is expected to reach almost 3 billion (2.99 billion) by the end of the year.
\n
Beyond advertising, BMO Capital Markets analyst Daniel Salmon wrote in a research note that commerce and shopping are becoming more important for Facebook’s success.
\n
In March, Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said there were one million Facebook Shops, and 250 million visitors. Salmon said that if the company discloses the gross merchandise volume, it could help cement the importance to investors of Facebook’s commerce initiatives. Salmon acknowledged that such as disclosure wasn’t likely.
\n
Investors have been wondering for months about the impact of a change to Apple‘s mobile operating system tech, which finally rolled out this week.
\n
On Monday, in an update to its iOS operating system,Apple changed its software to ask iPhone and iPad users to opt in to an app’s tracking—a significant departure from the opt out ability buried in the operating system’s settings previously.
\n
Zuckerberg and Apple (APPL) CEO Tim Cook have sparred over the issue for months. With just over a day’s worth of data, it seems unlikely Facebook will share details about the impact on its users. Previously developers have said it will hurt advertising targeting, and therefore damage ad revenue. It isn’t yet clear exactly what Apple users will do when presented with the choice, or the effectiveness of potential workarounds built by Facebook and others.
\n
BofA Securities analyst Justin Post wrote that he expects a “modest, low-single digit” impact on advertising spending on the platform since Facebook has had “ample time to prepare and develop workarounds.”
\n
Facebook finance chief David Wehner has discussed the potential impact on the business in past conference calls, and investors should pay close attention to any updates offered Wednesday. It’s worth noting that Zuckerberg took a less cautious tone in March, saying that he was confident the company will handle the situation. There is also the potential it could positively benefit the company, the CEO said.
\n
Of the analysts that cover Facebook, 49 rate the stock Buy, six have a Hold, and three rate it a Sell. The average target price is $339, which implies an upside of 12%.
\n
Barron’s took a positive view of Facebook stock earlier this month. Shares have climbed 2% since the cover story in the April 5 issue, as the S&P 500 index rose 4.1%. Facebook (FB) stands to make even more money than Snap. Analysts expect a net profit of nearly $7 billion, which amounts to $2.61 a share, when Facebook reports results after the closing bell Wednesday.\nIncluding sales of its virtual reality hardware, and other devices—which are expected contribute to the estimated $452 million to the “Other” revenue segment—Facebook revenue is expected to rise roughly 33% to $23.71 billion. The ad business will contribute revenue of $23.29 billion.\nFacebook is expected to grow its user base by tens of millions as well. Analysts forecast its daily member count will rise to 1.87 billion, and monthly user base will top 2.83 billion. Its monthly user base is expected to reach almost 3 billion (2.99 billion) by the end of the year.\nBeyond advertising, BMO Capital Markets analyst Daniel Salmon wrote in a research note that commerce and shopping are becoming more important for Facebook’s success.\nIn March, Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said there were one million Facebook Shops, and 250 million visitors. Salmon said that if the company discloses the gross merchandise volume, it could help cement the importance to investors of Facebook’s commerce initiatives. Salmon acknowledged that such as disclosure wasn’t likely.\nInvestors have been wondering for months about the impact of a change to Apple‘s mobile operating system tech, which finally rolled out this week.\nOn Monday, in an update to its iOS operating system,Apple changed its software to ask iPhone and iPad users to opt in to an app’s tracking—a significant departure from the opt out ability buried in the operating system’s settings previously.\nZuckerberg and Apple (APPL) CEO Tim Cook have sparred over the issue for months. With just over a day’s worth of data, it seems unlikely Facebook will share details about the impact on its users. Previously developers have said it will hurt advertising targeting, and therefore damage ad revenue. It isn’t yet clear exactly what Apple users will do when presented with the choice, or the effectiveness of potential workarounds built by Facebook and others.\nBofA Securities analyst Justin Post wrote that he expects a “modest, low-single digit” impact on advertising spending on the platform since Facebook has had “ample time to prepare and develop workarounds.”\nFacebook finance chief David Wehner has discussed the potential impact on the business in past conference calls, and investors should pay close attention to any updates offered Wednesday. It’s worth noting that Zuckerberg took a less cautious tone in March, saying that he was confident the company will handle the situation. There is also the potential it could positively benefit the company, the CEO said.\nOf the analysts that cover Facebook, 49 rate the stock Buy, six have a Hold, and three rate it a Sell. The average target price is $339, which implies an upside of 12%.\nBarron’s took a positive view of Facebook stock earlier this month. Shares have climbed 2% since the cover story in the April 5 issue, as the S&P 500 index rose 4.1%. Facebook gained 0.7% to $305.02 in Tuesday afternoon trading.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":296,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":342051196,"gmtCreate":1618135101115,"gmtModify":1634294742729,"author":{"id":"3575338121012336","authorId":"3575338121012336","name":"col","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5110a773428d8c8ea6479d5340108add","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575338121012336","authorIdStr":"3575338121012336"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a They dominate their industries, generate tons of cash and are obscenely profitable. Yet neither of the companies are in the prestigious Dow Jones Industrial Average — and for a good reason.
\n
BothAmazon(AMZN)andAlphabet(GOOGL)have stock prices in the quadruple digits. That makes them a no-go for the Dow, which weights its 30 components by share price rather than market value. So if either Amazon (currently priced north of $3,300 a share) or Alphabet (trading at just under $2,300) joined theDow, they would immediately have an outsized impact on the Dow.It wouldn't even be close: The priciest Dow stock currently isUnitedHealth(UNH), and at just over $400 a share, it makes up about 8% of the Dow's weighting. The case for splitting sharesBut if Amazon and Alphabet wanted to join the Dow, there's a solution to this price problem: The companies could announce a stock split, which increases the number of shares of the company has while cutting the price of each share to a more affordable level. It wouldn't change the companies' value.
\n
That's whatApple(AAPL)did in 2014, and it wasadded to the Dow in early 2015. Applesplit its stock again last year. Elon Musk'sTesla(TSLA)executed its ownstock splitlast year to make its surging stock more accessible to individual investors.
\n
Beyond the Dow question, splits can be compelling because some experts argue that having a more affordable price for a single share could attract even more investors. But that's admittedly less of an issue due to fractional trading, in which investors can buy a small piece of a company's shares through online brokers like Robinhood, Fidelity or Charles Schwab. There have been rumors about Amazon potentially announcing a split soon, especially now that Jeff Bezos is getting ready tohand over the CEO reinsto AWS headAndy Jassy. But Amazon didn't mention anything about a potential split when the companyreported earnings last week.Amazon was not immediately available for comment when asked by CNN Business if the company was considering a stock split, while a spokesperson for Alphabet declined to comment.High profile companies are 'split' on whether to splitThe pair of tech giants aren't the only companies trading at sky-high stock prices. Priceline ownerBooking(BKNG),Chipotle(CMG)andAutoZone(AZO)are also prominent companies in the S&P 500 with stock prices in excess of $1,000 a share.A Booking spokesperson, when asked by CNN Business about a future stock split, said the company has \"considered this but have not really seen the need to do so as of now.\"Chipotle chief financial officer Jack Hartung said in an email to CNN Business that \"we do not have any plans to split our stock at this time, but if we see an opportunity to enhance shareholder value and remove impediments to interested investors owning our stock, we will discuss the opportunity with our Board.\"
\n
AutoZone was not immediately available for comment.Meanwhile, several other high-profile companies in addition to Apple and Tesla have announced stock splits lately.Spice companyMcCormick(MKC)split its stock in December — its first split in about 20 years. Paint giantSherwin-Williams(SHW)split in April \"to make the stock more accessible to employees and a broader base of investors,\" senior vice president of investor relations James Jaye said on a conference call with analysts last month. And railroadCanadian Pacific(CP), which is in a bidding war with rivalCanadian National(CNI)forKansas City Southern(KSU), is preparing for a split later this month. The stock is currently trading around $375 and will split 5 for 1, which will lower the price to around $75 a share.\"The share split will encourage greater liquidity for CP's common shares and provide enhanced opportunities for ownership by a wider group of investors,\" said chief financial officer Nadeem Velani in a recent conference call with analysts.More trouble than they're worth? Not all company leaders are on board with stock splits. At least one major CEO has publicly called them a waste of time.PNC(PNC)CEO William Demchak said at the bank's shareholder meeting last month that \"there's not really a compelling case to be made for a stock split.\" One PNC share costs about $190.\"At one time, the conventional thinking was that when a company's share price got to a certain level, the company would split the stock as a way of foreshadowing expectations of growth and in order to make it more affordable for retail shareholders,\" he said. But Demchak added that \"all the stock split really does is increase costs because it doubles the cost of the mechanics that go into servicing every share.\"\"The split might result in some positive short-term public relations that brings about maybe a short-term bump,\" he added. \"But long term, it would appear that the cost is more than it's worth.\"
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Amazon and Alphabet may need to split their high-priced stocks
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Amazon and Alphabet may need to split their high-priced stocks\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-05 11:45 GMT+8 CNN\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
New York (CNN Business)Amazon and Google owner Alphabet are two of the most valuable companies on the planet. It wouldn't change the companies' value.\nThat's whatApple(AAPL)did in 2014, and it wasadded to the Dow in early 2015. Applesplit its stock again last year. Elon Musk'sTesla(TSLA)executed its ownstock splitlast year to make its surging stock more accessible to individual investors.\nBeyond the Dow question, splits can be compelling because some experts argue that having a more affordable price for a single share could attract even more investors. Priceline ownerBooking(BKNG),Chipotle(CMG)andAutoZone(AZO)are also prominent companies in the S&P 500 with stock prices in excess of $1,000 a share.A Booking spokesperson, when asked by CNN Business about a future stock split, said the company has \"considered this but have not really seen the need to do so as of now.\"Chipotle chief financial officer Jack Hartung said in an email to CNN Business that \"we do not have any plans to split our stock at this time, but if we see an opportunity to enhance shareholder value and remove impediments to interested investors owning our stock, we will discuss the opportunity with our Board.\"\nAutoZone was not immediately available for comment.Meanwhile, several other high-profile companies in addition to Apple and Tesla have announced stock splits lately.Spice companyMcCormick(MKC)split its stock in December — its first split in about 20 years. \"But long term, it would appear that the cost is more than it's worth.\"","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":446,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":371356985,"gmtCreate":1618914575047,"gmtModify":1634289952371,"author":{"id":"3575338121012336","authorId":"3575338121012336","name":"col","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5110a773428d8c8ea6479d5340108add","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575338121012336","authorIdStr":"3575338121012336"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a
