It decided at the end of June to increase its investment by 90 billion yen, betting that it can become the pharmaceutical industry's answer to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which specializes in making computer chips designed by others.
\n
As in the chip industry, there is a growing trend among big drugmakers to farm out some or all of their development and manufacturing to specialists. One factor driving the trend is the growing diversity of treatments and drugmaking technologies.
\n
As new treatments such as antibody drugs, cell therapies and gene therapies have become widely available, pharmaceutical companies face much tougher challenges developing and marketing drugs.
\n
Another factor is the huge investment needed to develop and manufacture biopharmaceuticals -- drugs derived from biological processes, such as blood products. This has opened the door for contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) of the sort Fujifilm hopes to become.
\n
Developing a new drug and bringing it to the market typically takes around 10 years and carries with it a huge risk of failure. The economics of the business argue for outsourcing: It makes sense for pharmaceutical companies to focus on lab operations drug discovery, and leaving steps such as cell line development, clinical trials and commercial manufacturing to service providers like CDMOs. \"We want to focus our management resources on drug discovery and marketing,\" says an executive at a major Japanese drugmaker.
\n
Takahiro Mori, a senior analyst at Mizuho Securities, predicts steady growth for outsourcing in the biopharmaceutical industry. \"Major pharmaceutical companies are putting less priority on investment in complex and sophisticated production technology for such drugs,\" he points out.
\n
Fujifilm believes it can be a major player in contract development and manufacturing of drugs by capitalizing on its competitive production technology. (File photo by AP)
\n
In fact, more big drugmakers are selling off their manufacturing operations these days. Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis sold its U.S. production facility for gene therapies to AGC in August. AstraZeneca of Britain sold its U.S. plant to AGC in June 2020.
\n
Research and Markets has forecast the CDMO market will grow by 50% to $241 billion by 2024, compared with 2020. The market is currently dominated by Lonza Group, a Swiss company, Boehringer Ingelheim of Germany and Samsung Biologics of South Korea. Together, they control around 70% of the global market in terms of production capacity.
\n
In particular, Samsung Biologics is using its financial muscle to expand, spending around $1.4 billion on a new plant that will raise its capacity by 70% next year. It has further plans for growth
\n
Fujifilm is late to the race but hopes its competitive production technology will help it catch up. The Japanese company plans to introduce a new production system that can more efficiently make antibodies with high purity in its plant in the U.K. Fujifilm describes the system as a \"fully integrated continuous processing facility.\"
\n
Fujifilm's continuous processing approach offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional batch cell culturing, allowing higher efficiency, along with better, more consistent product quality, the company says. Because it allows continuous production, the system does not require large tanks, reducing the required investment by 70% and overall production costs by around 30%, according to Fujifilm. The company says the amount of antibodies that can be harvested is three times higher with its continuous production method, compared with conventional batch production.
\n
Continuous production, however, requires highly precise control of the entire cell culturing process, as well as sophisticated refining technology and equipment. It also demands an enormous amount of culture media -- 30 to 40 times more than is used in batch production. These technological and cost challenges have hindered widespread use of continuous production for biopharmaceuticals. Fujifilm has taken advantage of its design capabilities in film production and other businesses to develop new equipment for its continuous production system.
\n
Takatoshi Ishikawa, a senior executive vice president in charge of the company's Bio CDMO division, calls Fujifilm's new production system \"a game-changer\" that will put it in a strong position to become the market leader. One factor driving the trend is the growing diversity of treatments and drugmaking technologies.\nAs new treatments such as antibody drugs, cell therapies and gene therapies have become widely available, pharmaceutical companies face much tougher challenges developing and marketing drugs.\nAnother factor is the huge investment needed to develop and manufacture biopharmaceuticals -- drugs derived from biological processes, such as blood products. This has opened the door for contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) of the sort Fujifilm hopes to become.\nDeveloping a new drug and bringing it to the market typically takes around 10 years and carries with it a huge risk of failure. The economics of the business argue for outsourcing: It makes sense for pharmaceutical companies to focus on lab operations drug discovery, and leaving steps such as cell line development, clinical trials and commercial manufacturing to service providers like CDMOs. \"We want to focus our management resources on drug discovery and marketing,\" says an executive at a major Japanese drugmaker.\nTakahiro Mori, a senior analyst at Mizuho Securities, predicts steady growth for outsourcing in the biopharmaceutical industry. \"Major pharmaceutical companies are putting less priority on investment in complex and sophisticated production technology for such drugs,\" he points out.\nFujifilm believes it can be a major player in contract development and manufacturing of drugs by capitalizing on its competitive production technology. (File photo by AP)\nIn fact, more big drugmakers are selling off their manufacturing operations these days. Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis sold its U.S. production facility for gene therapies to AGC in August. AstraZeneca of Britain sold its U.S. plant to AGC in June 2020.\nResearch and Markets has forecast the CDMO market will grow by 50% to $241 billion by 2024, compared with 2020. The market is currently dominated by Lonza Group, a Swiss company, Boehringer Ingelheim of Germany and Samsung Biologics of South Korea. Together, they control around 70% of the global market in terms of production capacity.\nIn particular, Samsung Biologics is using its financial muscle to expand, spending around $1.4 billion on a new plant that will raise its capacity by 70% next year. It has further plans for growth\nFujifilm is late to the race but hopes its competitive production technology will help it catch up. The Japanese company plans to introduce a new production system that can more efficiently make antibodies with high purity in its plant in the U.K. Fujifilm describes the system as a \"fully integrated continuous processing facility.\"\nFujifilm's continuous processing approach offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional batch cell culturing, allowing higher efficiency, along with better, more consistent product quality, the company says. Because it allows continuous production, the system does not require large tanks, reducing the required investment by 70% and overall production costs by around 30%, according to Fujifilm. The company says the amount of antibodies that can be harvested is three times higher with its continuous production method, compared with conventional batch production.\nContinuous production, however, requires highly precise control of the entire cell culturing process, as well as sophisticated refining technology and equipment. It also demands an enormous amount of culture media -- 30 to 40 times more than is used in batch production. These technological and cost challenges have hindered widespread use of continuous production for biopharmaceuticals. Fujifilm has taken advantage of its design capabilities in film production and other businesses to develop new equipment for its continuous production system.\nTakatoshi Ishikawa, a senior executive vice president in charge of the company's Bio CDMO division, calls Fujifilm's new production system \"a game-changer\" that will put it in a strong position to become the market leader. The company is already in talks with more than one major pharmaceutical company over the new technology.\nFujifilm aims to raise the sales in its CDMO business to 200 billion yen by the year through March 2025, double the figure for the year that ended in March 2021, and achieve annual sales growth of 20% in subsequent years.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":704,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":878354205,"gmtCreate":1637154040638,"gmtModify":1637154040835,"author":{"id":"3575098910724577","authorId":"3575098910724577","name":"G7","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/239026a67b093628454229400edb283a","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575098910724577","authorIdStr":"3575098910724577"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Nanofilm(MZH.SI)$lol what happened? pleasant surprise","listText":"$Nanofilm(MZH.SI)$lol what happened? pleasant surprise","text":"$Nanofilm(MZH.SI)$lol what happened? pleasant surprise","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f3bb9ca3f3e783c9a2c0d58a68a524b2","width":"1080","height":"3164"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/878354205","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1501,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":148899866,"gmtCreate":1625965180755,"gmtModify":1631884164152,"author":{"id":"3575098910724577","authorId":"3575098910724577","name":"G7","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/239026a67b093628454229400edb283a","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575098910724577","authorIdStr":"3575098910724577"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Bank investors are hoping for something to get excited about this coming week when JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs Group, and others report second-quarter results. The European Central Bank on Thursday kept in place its monetary policy and communicated the view that inflation will be transitory.\nWhat analysts and traders say\n\"Record increases in CPI for a second straight month were driven by transportation costs. That's not the only price increase, but monthly changes would be a lot lower without the impact of used vehicles soaring above a decade-long trend,\" wrote Jim Vogel, executive v.p. president at FHN Financial.\n\"Bond investors apparently are willing to track CPI-ex autos in the same way they adjust autos from retail sales. This is not the best way to do it, but it's understandable in the moment,\" the analyst said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":122,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":607991523,"gmtCreate":1639469048269,"gmtModify":1639469048428,"author":{"id":"3575098910724577","authorId":"3575098910724577","name":"G7","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/239026a67b093628454229400edb283a","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575098910724577","authorIdStr":"3575098910724577"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"lower more please","listText":"lower more please","text":"lower more please","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/607991523","repostId":"1193701389","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":613,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":603657271,"gmtCreate":1638408014836,"gmtModify":1638408015063,"author":{"id":"3575098910724577","authorId":"3575098910724577","name":"G7","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/239026a67b093628454229400edb283a","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3575098910724577","authorIdStr":"3575098910724577"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"for real? Call me old-school, but I've always considered a market cap in excess of $100 billion to be a megacap stock (today, some folks believe in a megacap cutoff of $200 billion).
\n
Historically, companies that surpass a $100 billion market cap are slow-growing, but they're often profitable, time-tested, and offer modest long-term appreciation. Can these megacap stocks actually double? Let's take a closer look.
\n
\n
Tesla Motors: Implied upside of 129%
\n
Perhaps unsurprisingly, auto stock Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) offers the highest implied upside, based on the beefiest Wall Street price target -- $1,471 a share -- as of this past weekend. If this price target came to fruition, we'd be talking about a 129% increase in Tesla's stock. It's also worth mentioning that ARK invest CEO and Chief Investment Officer Cathie Wood believes Tesla can hit $3,000 a share by mid-decade.
\n
The obvious reason for bullishness has to do with the epic multi-decade vehicle replacement cycle that'll see people and businesses switching to electric vehicles (EV) and other forms of alternative energy-powered transportation. Tesla had a first-mover advantage in the U.S., and it's building a name for itself in China, which is the largest auto market in the world. By 2035, the Society of Automotive Engineers of China estimates that half of all new vehicles sold in China will be powered by alternative energy.
\n
Another reason some Wall Street analysts have rallied around Tesla is the company's clear-cut competitive advantages. For example, Tesla's batteries have higher capacity, more power, and better range than the batteries being developed by its peers. The introduction of the Model 3 also brought the price of entry-level EV ownership down considerably.
\n
But Tesla is also a highly polarizing stock, with a low price target from Wall Street of just $67. That's because there's a mountain of competition brewing in the EV space domestically and abroad. General Motors (NYSE:GM) plans to spend $35 billion on EVs and autonomous innovation through mid-decade. Meanwhile, Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) is planning to spend $30 billion through 2025 on EVs. GM and Ford will each be launching 30 new electric vehicles globally within five years.
\n
An even bigger concern might just be Tesla's inability to generate a profit from selling EVs. Although it's been reporting adjusted quarterly profits for more than a year, Tesla's \"profitability\" has hinged on it selling renewable energy credits to other automakers or selling its digital assets (Bitcoin) for a profit. It's hard to envision Tesla being worth $1.4 trillion without even demonstrating to Wall Street that it can generate a recurring profit from selling EVs.
\n
\n
JD.com: Implied upside of 101%
\n
Wall Street is also expecting big things from China's second-largest online retailer, JD.com (NASDAQ:JD). Though the consensus of all analysts is that JD offers a hearty 43% upside, one analyst foresees the company making a currency-converted run at close to $105 a share. This implies potential gains of 101% for the e-commerce giant.
\n
Wall Street's fascination with JD has to do with its similarities to Amazon.com and its (pardon the pun) prime location (i.e., at the heart of China's rapidly growing economy). Though the company does, in certain instances, act as a third-party marketplace, it's primarily a direct retailer of goods to online shoppers and maintains its own inventory. Having greater control over product quality and logistics is what's helped Amazon to generate insane amounts of cash flow, and it should do the same for JD. As of the end of March, JD's annual active customer count was a stone's throw from 500 million, up 29% from the prior-year period.
\n
Equally exciting is the rapid growth JD is experiencing from its service operations, which encompasses things like healthcare services, cloud services, and advertising. In late April, Cloudflare announced that it would partner with JD to expand its network in China. For JD, Cloudflare's use of its cloud infrastructure will create another channel of fast-growing sales. In Q1, this service segment grew sales by a blistering 73% from the prior-year quarter.
\n
However, JD is far from being the only fish in the pond in the world's second-largest economy. Though being a direct retailer comes with its advantages, it's nevertheless under constant pressure from the likes of Alibaba and Pinduoduo. Even Tencent Holdings, which has been a longtime shareholder of JD, is a potential threat with its slow but steady push into mobile e-commerce.
\n
Yet, even with increasing competition and regulatory uncertainty in China, JD offers a very realistic shot at eventually hitting Wall Street's upper echelon price target. Take note, I'm not saying JD gets there within 12 months, as is the common timeframe for Wall Street price targets. But within the next few years, $105 is a very realistic target given its 20%-plus sustainable growth rate and cloud services push.
\n
\n
Netflix: Implied upside of 124%
\n
The last megacap stock that Wall Street believes has the potential to double is streaming content provider Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX). The most aggressive price target on Wall Street foresees Netflix galloping to $1,154 a share, or 124% higher than where the company settled this past week.
\n
Similar to Tesla, Wall Street's fascination with Netflix has a lot to do with the company's first-mover advantage. Folks were scratching their heads when CEO Reed Hastings decided to shift away from a highly profitable DVD-delivery business and focus his company's attention on streaming. With hindsight being 20/20, we know this was a genius move. Netflix ended June with almost 209.2 million global streaming subscribers.
\n
Netflix also has a long history of turning heads thanks to its original programming. It's released dozens of original shows and movies, many of which have turned casual subscribers into users who become hooked on the service.
\n
But there are also a number of good reasons to believe that $1,154 isn't achievable. For instance, competition in the streaming space has been steadily picking up, with Netflix losing some of its share in the United States. In particular, Walt Disney's streaming service Disney+ took just 16 months to go from launch to more than 100 million subscribers. The timing of the pandemic certainly helped Disney+, however its ascension can't be ignored.
\n
Furthermore, there's uncertainty about subscriber growth in a post-pandemic world. Make no mistake about it, we're still in a global pandemic. But with vaccination rates climbing, it's a fair assumption that people are going to be spending more time outside their homes rather than in front of their televisions or laptops. This could certainly slow Netflix's subscriber growth.
\n
A final reason for skepticism in this high-water price target is Netflix's long history of net cash outflows. It's no secret that Netflix wants to expand internationally, and it's willing to spend big to gobble up international streaming share. But it's difficult to imagine Netflix being worth close to $500 billion without any consistent positive cash flow.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Can These Megacap Stocks Double? The cryptocurrency has been trading in a range between 30,000 and 40,000 over the past few weeks. That volatility may only persist as it tests key levels of technical support.
\n
There are plenty of reasons for the recent weakness. China is cracking down on bitcoin mining operations. For example, the most recent one is the technology bubble of the late 1990s. All a company had to do was add a dot.com to the end of their corporate name or say they were launching a website. This would send the stock soaring, even though there was nothing fundamental that actually change.
\n
Back then, investors came up with all sorts of ingenious ways how to value some of these dot.com stocks. Even though some of those valuations made no sense, there was something to show how one could arrive at that valuation. Investors could look to extrapolate cash flow or the potential revenue and earnings growth. At least there was something because the company either created something or had something of value to sell.
\n
With Bitcoin, there seems to be plenty of reason why the crypto can rise, but very little to support some of these far-fetched valuations. Bitcoin produces nothing, clearly has no store of value or stability, and offers no dividend. There is no revenue, no cash flow, nothing. At least in the speculative technology bubble of the late 1990s, even though the valuation was a stretch, an investor could decide if they agreed or disagreed with the analysis. Bitcoin offers investors no such way to do that.
\n
Technicals
\n
The only thing an investor is left with are technical charts, and those continue to look really weak. It's currently testing support around 30,000 and is likely heading even lower to complete a 5 wave cycle. Based on a projection of this 5 wave counted, Bitcoin is likely heading toward 16,300. Additionally, the relative strength index is falling, suggesting the bulls have no control over it at this point. Even the MACD is showing a downward sloping trend line as well.
