Square sees mid-size businesses as a huge addressable market, and this category demonstrated high potential for profitability, with gross profit growing at double the rate of other categories.</p>\n<p>Its Cash App ecosystem was a huge success as people began to rely more heavily on digital payments while under lockdown. But it was<b>Bitcoin</b>(CRYPTO:BTC)that made the biggest splash on Square's business. Literally.</p>\n<p>Calling Square (ticker: SQ) her top pick for 2021, Evercore ISI’s Rayna Kumar writes that it is the “most disruptive company in payments and banking.” She reiterated an Outperform rating on Thursday, with a $304 price target. “Disruption pays,” she writes, “pounding [the] table ahead of earnings.”</p>\n<p>Square was ahead 2% on last&nbsp;Friday and is up 27% this year to recent prices around $280.</p>\n<p>The payments app is riding a strong growth wave: Its Cash App has become a popular stock trading platform. Retail trading surged during the pandemic, and Cash App may have won over clients from Robinhood after that app briefly restricted trading in GameStop (GME).</p>\n<p>According to a small survey of Robinhood users by Mizuho Securities, nearly 40% of respondents who switched to other trading apps said they shifted to Cash App, beating other platforms like Stash, Fidelity, or TD Ameritrade (now owned byCharles Schwab).</p>\n<p>Bitcoin’s surging price, recently hitting records around $50,000, is also fueling gains for Cash App; users can buy and trade the cryptocurrency on the app. Square buys the cryptocurrency and resells it to users, taking a cut of transactions. The company posted about $1.6 billion in total Bitcoin revenue in the third quarter, though net revenue, after costs for the currency, was just $32 million.</p>\n<p>Kumar expects Square to beat consensus estimates in the fourth quarter of 2020 and throughout 2021. She sees Square posting net revenue of $924 million in the quarter with Ebitda—earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization—of $160 million, ahead of consensus estimates of $141 million. She sees the firm posting adjusted net revenue of $4.3 billion in 2021, resulting in adjusted Ebitda of $825 million, 24% above consensus estimates.</p>\n<p>Cash App may have boosted active users by 56% in January, according to Evercore surveys. The app had 33 million users in the September quarter, and Kumar expects the company to hit 40 million in the fourth quarter.</p>\n<p>Kumar notes that Square is working to integrate Cash App with its Seller App used by merchants to process payments. The company is integrating the ecosystems through new products like Instant Payments from merchants to employees and On-Demand Pay, giving employees a way to quickly access up to $200 per pay period in Cash App.</p>\n<p>Wolfe Research’s Darrin Peller also reiterated a bullish view, maintaining an Outperform rating and $335 target. He expects shares to “grind higher over the next several months,” fueled by Bitcoin, stock trading, and growth trends in Cash App.</p>\n<p>“Square stands out as a material share gainer across its businesses, solidifying its status as a global leader,” he wrote in a note on Thursday.</p>\n<p>Investors are paying a steep multiple for Square’s growth. The company is expected to earn 76 cents a share in the next 12 months, giving it a price-to-earnings ratio of 370 times.</p>\n<p>Analysts value stocks like Square on a multiple of revenue, but that doesn’t make it much cheaper. Assuming $4.2 billion in net revenue this year, the shares trade at 66 times sales.PayPal Holdings(PYPL), by contrast, fetches 13 times sales.</p>\n<p>Valuation is keeping Piper Sandler analyst Christopher Donat on the sidelines. He has kept a Neutral rating on the stock since initiating coverage last July. His current price target is $190.</p>\n<p>“We’ve had a tough time putting an overweight on it, and it’s even tougher liking the valuation now,” he said. The pace of downloads of Cash App has been slowing, he points out, leading to slower growth of active users. He is also concerned about ongoing sales weakness at small bricks-and-mortar merchants such as restaurants.</p>\n<p>“I think Square is a great growth story with a long runway but I’m uncomfortable with the valuation,” he said. Square trades at 15 times enterprise value to revenue, compared with 11 times forPayPal Holdings,which is his top pick in payments.</p>\n<p>Square is scheduled to report earnings after the close on Feb. 23. Literally.\nCalling Square (ticker: SQ) her top pick for 2021, Evercore ISI’s Rayna Kumar writes that it is the “most disruptive company in payments and banking.” She reiterated an Outperform rating on Thursday, with a $304 price target. “Disruption pays,” she writes, “pounding [the] table ahead of earnings.”\nSquare was ahead 2% on last Friday and is up 27% this year to recent prices around $280.\nThe payments app is riding a strong growth wave: Its Cash App has become a popular stock trading platform. Retail trading surged during the pandemic, and Cash App may have won over clients from Robinhood after that app briefly restricted trading in GameStop (GME).\nAccording to a small survey of Robinhood users by Mizuho Securities, nearly 40% of respondents who switched to other trading apps said they shifted to Cash App, beating other platforms like Stash, Fidelity, or TD Ameritrade (now owned byCharles Schwab).\nBitcoin’s surging price, recently hitting records around $50,000, is also fueling gains for Cash App; users can buy and trade the cryptocurrency on the app. Square buys the cryptocurrency and resells it to users, taking a cut of transactions. The company posted about $1.6 billion in total Bitcoin revenue in the third quarter, though net revenue, after costs for the currency, was just $32 million.\nKumar expects Square to beat consensus estimates in the fourth quarter of 2020 and throughout 2021. She sees Square posting net revenue of $924 million in the quarter with Ebitda—earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization—of $160 million, ahead of consensus estimates of $141 million. She sees the firm posting adjusted net revenue of $4.3 billion in 2021, resulting in adjusted Ebitda of $825 million, 24% above consensus estimates.\nCash App may have boosted active users by 56% in January, according to Evercore surveys. The app had 33 million users in the September quarter, and Kumar expects the company to hit 40 million in the fourth quarter.\nKumar notes that Square is working to integrate Cash App with its Seller App used by merchants to process payments. The company is integrating the ecosystems through new products like Instant Payments from merchants to employees and On-Demand Pay, giving employees a way to quickly access up to $200 per pay period in Cash App.\nWolfe Research’s Darrin Peller also reiterated a bullish view, maintaining an Outperform rating and $335 target. He expects shares to “grind higher over the next several months,” fueled by Bitcoin, stock trading, and growth trends in Cash App.\n“Square stands out as a material share gainer across its businesses, solidifying its status as a global leader,” he wrote in a note on Thursday.\nInvestors are paying a steep multiple for Square’s growth. The company is expected to earn 76 cents a share in the next 12 months, giving it a price-to-earnings ratio of 370 times.\nAnalysts value stocks like Square on a multiple of revenue, but that doesn’t make it much cheaper. Assuming $4.2 billion in net revenue this year, the shares trade at 66 times sales.PayPal Holdings(PYPL), by contrast, fetches 13 times sales.\nValuation is keeping Piper Sandler analyst Christopher Donat on the sidelines. He has kept a Neutral rating on the stock since initiating coverage last July. His current price target is $190.\n“We’ve had a tough time putting an overweight on it, and it’s even tougher liking the valuation now,” he said. And for a while, the unlikely trading boom around the stock of the beleaguered video game retailerGameStopput the little guy on top. Breathtaking fortunes appeared overnight.</p><p>But they disappeared almost as quickly.</p><p>At its highest point,GameStop’s&nbsp;share price was $483. On Friday, the stock was worth $40.59. The trading frenzy — powered by online hype over a rebellion against traditional Wall Street powers — had created, and then&nbsp;destroyed, roughly $30 billion in on-paper wealth.</p><p>Many small-time investors who got caught up in the mania as it peaked lost big. Shawn Daumer went to Hooters.</p><p>Armed with money partly from high school graduation gifts and winnings from trades on stocks like Tesla, Mr. Daumer had spent about $47,000on shares of GameStop the week before it went through the roof.</p><p>It was Jan. 26 — just two days into&nbsp;GameStop’s big week— when he and his brother hit up Hooters, scarfed down 30 wings and got 10 more to go. Two days later, GameStop hit its intraday peak of $483 and Mr. Daumer, a real estate broker in Valparaiso, Ind., was holding 1,233 shares. He was up more than a half-million dollars on his initial investment.</p><p>Mr. Daumer traced his interest in GameStop to the same place many others did: Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum, where armchair traders gather for raunchy jokes, tales of success and even to brag about enormous losses.</p><p><b>Understand What Happened With GameStop</b></p><ul><li>Shares in GameStop, the video retailer,have crashed&nbsp;from their January highs, which were driven by memes on social media.</li><li>Amateur traders&nbsp;egging on one another on Redditbet heavily on shares of the company&nbsp;in January, sending the price up more than 1,700 percent at one point.</li><li>The wave was in part aimed athurting large hedge funds&nbsp;that had been&nbsp;short selling&nbsp;— betting against —&nbsp;GameStop stock. Some of those fundsexperienced huge losses&nbsp;as a result.</li><li>But many of the individual investors who pumped up the stock could lose huge amounts of money, too. Somebelieve the price will go back up&nbsp;and are refusing to sell, even as the share price has collapsed.</li><li>Now, regulators are looking into&nbsp;how the rally started&nbsp;and whethernew rules&nbsp;should be created because of it.</li></ul><p>“Really the biggest part is once you see everybody buying shares day after day, and seeing it live on your own screen, and watching it go up,” Mr. Daumer said in the midst of GameStop’s surge. “It’s follow the trend, you know? If that’s the trend, follow it and it makes you money.”</p><p>But GameStop’s stock abruptly turned down when the trading app Robinhood and other brokerage firms announced a slew of restrictions on the trading of a handful of stocks that had been spiking. Mr. Daumer had about $200,000 in potential profits evaporate almost immediately.</p><p>“I’m still up 500 percent,” he said at the time. “I’m OK.” Besides, Mr. Daumer and his fellow Redditors believed GameStop would soar once more: “We’re going to $1,000,” he said.</p><p>They never came close.</p><p>Last week,as the stock plunged&nbsp;72 percent in two days, he’d had enough. Mr. Daumer put in an order to sell on Tuesday afternoon, and the order was filled Wednesday morning at a price of $91.22.</p><p>He walked away with more than $65,000 in profit, more than doubling his investment.</p><p>Not everyone was so lucky.</p><p><b>A Rude Awakening</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d56965a819f901d26e04fec085eed4a0\" tg-width=\"2048\" tg-height=\"1365\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Nora Samir held her GameStop shares too long and lost more than half of what she invested.Credit...David Maurice Smith for The New York Times</span></p><p>It seemed like a dream to Nora Samir.</p><p>She woke up in the middle of the night of Jan. 27 at her home in Sydney. On the other side of the world, GameStop was soaring.</p><p>The $735 she’d put in the day before had doubled. She raced downstairs to tell her mother, who was sleeping.</p><p>“Nora, don’t be greedy,” her mother warned. “You need to take it out.”</p><p>But Ms. Samir, 24, a child-health researcher at the University of New South Wales and a stock market neophyte,</p><p>didn’t sell — she bought.</p><p>After investing about $800 more, she owned just over nine shares of GameStop. She later plowed $1,800 into BlackBerry, the cellphone maker that once dominated mobile email and hadbeen swept up in the frenzy.</p><p>“I was on a high,” she admitted. “When the stock is going up, you don’t think of how low it can go.”</p><p>The high didn’t last long — and the fall was made worse when her trading app crashed, leaving her with little choice but to hold on while GameStop shares plunged.</p><p>She managed to sell one share on the way down, for $134. The shares she still owned on Friday were worth $528. She’s lost more than half what she put into GameStop.</p><p>The lesson, Ms. Samir said: “Don’t be greedy.”</p><p><b>You Only Live Once</b></p><p>Jacob Chalfant, a high school senior from Westfield, N.J., enjoyed how his “diamond hands” were putting the squeeze on Wall Street’s hedge funds.</p><p>A poster on WallStreetBets since he was 15, Mr. Chalfant, now 18, relished the GameStop rally for the pressure it put on firms like Melvin Capital, which had bet that GameStop’s shares would fall.</p><p>In the parlance of Reddit, Mr. Chalfant’s diamond-hard hands won’t fold, unlike the “paper hands” of sellers. He’s still holding the shares he bought for $1,035 — about a month’s wages from his job at a pizza shop and his freelance photography business — when GameStop was trading at $290. On Friday, his investment was worth $220.</p><p>“I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ve already lost the money,” he said. “Realistically, the stock is not going to go where it was before.”</p><p>But the losses are an investment, too, Mr. Chalfant said. They’ve earned him “internet points” on WallStreetBets. “If you’re saying, ‘I’m still holding,’ you have more clout than if you didn’t,” he said.</p><p>(Many on the WallStreetBets forum insist that GameStop’s shares may surge again. On the other hand, another Reddit forum opened last week where users share tales of losses from trading the stock whose ticker symbol is GME: GMEbagholdersclub.)</p><p>Mr. Chalfant said he and other teenage traders enjoy the gamification of the investing, and many of his friends had gotten in on GameStop just because they thought it was funny, not to make money.</p><p>“We’re living in a system where there’s no such thing as justice anymore and the entire world is falling apart,” Mr. Chalfant said. “Nothing really matters, so we might as well try to have fun while we’re here.”</p><p><b>Collateral Damage</b></p><p>Terrell Jones didn’t need to invest in GameStop to lose money off the frenzy.</p><p>Mr. Jones, a college student from Kenosha, Wis., bought $300 in shares of AMC, the movie theater chain whose stock was also swept up in the attempt to squeeze the short sellers who profit as stocks decline.</p><p>“I just got caught up in the social media hype and just dove right into it,” he said. “I fell for it.”</p><p>When AMC started to fall and he had lost $112, Mr. Jones, 24, panicked.</p><p>“I just had to get out of there as soon as possible,” he said. “It’s a lot of money, we’re in the middle of a pandemic and I have rent that needs to be paid.”</p><p>Mr. Jones, 24, had never invested in the stock market before. Now, though, he feels that he learned a lesson.</p><p>“I realized pretty quick that people like me were up against those billionaires,” he said. “And at the end of the day, those people always find a way to win.”</p><p><b>Losing His Head</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1568d73f6db637748479d972e48a4b97\" tg-width=\"2048\" tg-height=\"1595\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>“This is money I have already written off,” said C. Arthur Davitt, who lives in Chicago.Credit...Lyndon French for The New York Times</span></p><p>Ordinarily, C. Arthur Davitt is a model of financial discipline.</p><p>He automatically sweeps $200 a month into an index fund, saves enough to get a company match on his 401(k) and has been aggressively paying down his $35,000 in graduate school debt.</p><p>But Mr. Davitt, 29, thought it might be fun to get in on some of the skyrocketing stocks. He put less than $1,500 in GameStop and AMC — the GameStop portion is now down by nearly half, and his stake in AMC lost more than 20 percent.</p><p>“I am not a gambler by nature,” he said, “and this is money I have already written off.”</p><p>Mr. Davitt, who lives in Chicago and works for a company that provides worker assistance programs for employers, figures he might as well hold on to both companies. GameStop just named several new executives, which could help inject new life into the company, he said, and AMC could see a bounce once more people start venturing out of their homes.</p><p>“If I didn’t like GameStop or AMC,” Mr. Davitt said, “I wouldn’t be finding this as enjoyable.”</p><p><b>Another on the Line</b></p><p>By almost any measure, Mr. Daumer, the Indiana teenager, is one of the winners of the GameStop trade. He more than doubled his money, even if he didn’t score the biggest possible payday.</p><p>“Do you fish?” he asked, searching for a way to explain the experience.</p><p>When you’re fishing, he said, and you feel a tug on your line, it might be just a nibble or it might be a bite. If you wait to feel a stronger tug, you risk losing the fish you didn’t know you had.</p><p>The peak, he said, was that kind of moment. He thought it was just a small nibble, and decided to wait.</p><p>“The fish got away,” he said.</p><p>But there are others out there to be hooked, he said. He’s already dabbling in shares of a penny stock, Castor Maritime, which is based in Cyprus. It’s up over 300 percent so far this year.</p><p>What kind of business is the company in?</p><p>“You know what? Shawn Daumer went to Hooters.Armed with money partly from high school graduation gifts and winnings from trades on stocks like Tesla, Mr. Daumer had spent about $47,000on shares of GameStop the week before it went through the roof.It was Jan. 26 — just two days into GameStop’s big week— when he and his brother hit up Hooters, scarfed down 30 wings and got 10 more to go. Two days later, GameStop hit its intraday peak of $483 and Mr. Daumer, a real estate broker in Valparaiso, Ind., was holding 1,233 shares. He was up more than a half-million dollars on his initial investment.Mr. Daumer traced his interest in GameStop to the same place many others did: Reddit’s WallStreetBets forum, where armchair traders gather for raunchy jokes, tales of success and even to brag about enormous losses.Understand What Happened With GameStopShares in GameStop, the video retailer,have crashed from their January highs, which were driven by memes on social media.Amateur traders egging on one another on Redditbet heavily on shares of the company in January, sending the price up more than 1,700 percent at one point.The wave was in part aimed athurting large hedge funds that had been short selling — betting against — GameStop stock. Some of those fundsexperienced huge losses as a result.But many of the individual investors who pumped up the stock could lose huge amounts of money, too. Somebelieve the price will go back up and are refusing to sell, even as the share price has collapsed.Now, regulators are looking into how the rally started and whethernew rules should be created because of it.“Really the biggest part is once you see everybody buying shares day after day, and seeing it live on your own screen, and watching it go up,” Mr. Daumer said in the midst of GameStop’s surge. “It’s follow the trend, you know? If that’s the trend, follow it and it makes you money.”But GameStop’s stock abruptly turned down when the trading app Robinhood and other brokerage firms announced a slew of restrictions on the trading of a handful of stocks that had been spiking. Mr. Daumer had about $200,000 in potential profits evaporate almost immediately.“I’m still up 500 percent,” he said at the time. “I’m OK.” Besides, Mr. Daumer and his fellow Redditors believed GameStop would soar once more: “We’re going to $1,000,” he said.They never came close.Last week,as the stock plunged 72 percent in two days, he’d had enough. Mr. Daumer put in an order to sell on Tuesday afternoon, and the order was filled Wednesday morning at a price of $91.22.He walked away with more than $65,000 in profit, more than doubling his investment.Not everyone was so lucky.A Rude AwakeningNora Samir held her GameStop shares too long and lost more than half of what she invested.Credit...David Maurice Smith for The New York TimesIt seemed like a dream to Nora Samir.She woke up in the middle of the night of Jan. 27 at her home in Sydney. On the other side of the world, GameStop was soaring.The $735 she’d put in the day before had doubled. She raced downstairs to tell her mother, who was sleeping.“Nora, don’t be greedy,” her mother warned. “You need to take it out.”But Ms. Samir, 24, a child-health researcher at the University of New South Wales and a stock market neophyte,didn’t sell — she bought.After investing about $800 more, she owned just over nine shares of GameStop. She later plowed $1,800 into BlackBerry, the cellphone maker that once dominated mobile email and hadbeen swept up in the frenzy.“I was on a high,” she admitted. “When the stock is going up, you don’t think of how low it can go.”The high didn’t last long — and the fall was made worse when her trading app crashed, leaving her with little choice but to hold on while GameStop shares plunged.She managed to sell one share on the way down, for $134. The shares she still owned on Friday were worth $528. She’s lost more than half what she put into GameStop.The lesson, Ms. Samir said: “Don’t be greedy.”You Only Live OnceJacob Chalfant, a high school senior from Westfield, N.J., enjoyed how his “diamond hands” were putting the squeeze on Wall Street’s hedge funds.A poster on WallStreetBets since he was 15, Mr. Chalfant, now 18, relished the GameStop rally for the pressure it put on firms like Melvin Capital, which had bet that GameStop’s shares would fall.In the parlance of Reddit, Mr. Chalfant’s diamond-hard hands won’t fold, unlike the “paper hands” of sellers. He’s still holding the shares he bought for $1,035 — about a month’s wages from his job at a pizza shop and his freelance photography business — when GameStop was trading at $290. On Friday, his investment was worth $220.“I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ve already lost the money,” he said. “Realistically, the stock is not going to go where it was before.”But the losses are an investment, too, Mr. Chalfant said. They’ve earned him “internet points” on WallStreetBets. “If you’re saying, ‘I’m still holding,’ you have more clout than if you didn’t,” he said.(Many on the WallStreetBets forum insist that GameStop’s shares may surge again. On the other hand, another Reddit forum opened last week where users share tales of losses from trading the stock whose ticker symbol is GME: GMEbagholdersclub.)Mr. Chalfant said he and other teenage traders enjoy the gamification of the investing, and many of his friends had gotten in on GameStop just because they thought it was funny, not to make money.“We’re living in a system where there’s no such thing as justice anymore and the entire world is falling apart,” Mr. Chalfant said. “Nothing really matters, so we might as well try to have fun while we’re here.”Collateral DamageTerrell Jones didn’t need to invest in GameStop to lose money off the frenzy.Mr. Jones, a college student from Kenosha, Wis., bought $300 in shares of AMC, the movie theater chain whose stock was also swept up in the attempt to squeeze the short sellers who profit as stocks decline.“I just got caught up in the social media hype and just dove right into it,” he said. “I fell for it.”When AMC started to fall and he had lost $112, Mr. Jones, 24, panicked.“I just had to get out of there as soon as possible,” he said. “It’s a lot of money, we’re in the middle of a pandemic and I have rent that needs to be paid.”Mr. Jones, 24, had never invested in the stock market before. Now, though, he feels that he learned a lesson.“I realized pretty quick that people like me were up against those billionaires,” he said. “And at the end of the day, those people always find a way to win.”Losing His Head“This is money I have already written off,” said C. Arthur Davitt is a model of financial discipline.He automatically sweeps $200 a month into an index fund, saves enough to get a company match on his 401(k) and has been aggressively paying down his $35,000 in graduate school debt.But Mr. Davitt, 29, thought it might be fun to get in on some of the skyrocketing stocks. He put less than $1,500 in GameStop and AMC — the GameStop portion is now down by nearly half, and his stake in AMC lost more than 20 percent.“I am not a gambler by nature,” he said, “and this is money I have already written off.”Mr. Davitt, who lives in Chicago and works for a company that provides worker assistance programs for employers, figures he might as well hold on to both companies. GameStop just named several new executives, which could help inject new life into the company, he said, and AMC could see a bounce once more people start venturing out of their homes.“If I didn’t like GameStop or AMC,” Mr. Davitt said, “I wouldn’t be finding this as enjoyable.”Another on the LineBy almost any measure, Mr. Daumer, the Indiana teenager, is one of the winners of the GameStop trade. He more than doubled his money, even if he didn’t score the biggest possible payday.“Do you fish?” he asked, searching for a way to explain the experience.When you’re fishing, he said, and you feel a tug on your line, it might be just a nibble or it might be a bite. If you wait to feel a stronger tug, you risk losing the fish you didn’t know you had.The peak, he said, was that kind of moment. He thought it was just a small nibble, and decided to wait.“The fish got away,” he said.But there are others out there to be hooked, he said. He’s already dabbling in shares of a penny stock, Castor Maritime, which is based in Cyprus. It’s up over 300 percent so far this year.What kind of business is the company in?“You know what? The stock is falling leading up to the end of the lock-up period as expected. Next week will tell a better story as to where this stock is headed. Well, Palantir Technologies Inc. has been around since 2003 and is headquartered in Denver, Colorado. In short,they build and deploy software platforms for the intelligence community in the USA to assist in counterterrorism investigations and operations.</p>\n<p>Palantir Gothamis a software program that identifies patterns hidden deep within datasets. This helps execute real-world responses to threats that have been identified within the platform. This was used in the efforts to help those in need in hurricane Florence in 2018. Palantir Gothamcombined publicly available flood data with weather information and social vulnerability census data to find the communities in greatest needand resources were deployed appropriately. More recently, they are providing the U.S. government with coronavirus tracking software.</p>\n<p>The company also provides Palantir Foundry,a platform that transforms the ways organizations operate by creating a central operating system for their data; and allows individual users to integrate and analyze the data they need in one place.</p>\n<p>Pretty cool hey?</p>\n<p><b>What Is Driving The Company?</b></p>\n<p>Revenue. This is a growth play, plain and simple. Looking below we can see what is forecasted down the pipe. The missing block is 2020, which we found out todaywas $1.1 billion. That is a ~47% increase year-over-year. Going forward, analysts are projecting the pace stays heavy at 35%+ per year revenue growth. Often we consider 20% being strong, so that makes this look really good. The stock fell over 12% today on the earnings news. Upon diving deeper, it would appear most investors were disappointed with the forward forecasts. I personally think they are sandbagging a bit to blow away consensus down the line, but time will tell how true that is. Based on everything the company had put out in terms of news, which is nicely outlined inJohn Rhodes article : Palantir: Potential Q4 Revenue Blowoutmost people expected the revenue beat, but the action in the stock over the last week showed otherwise.</p>\n<p>Data has become more relevant to the average person than ever before. The local news has all kinds of data on it when it comes to COVID-19.In 2020, Palantir helped 100 commercial organizations and 10 national governments respond to COVID-19. This has been a large opportunity for Palantir, and they have not squandered it. This response has helped earn thema 2-year contract for U.K. health services work worth $31.5 million. In the fourth quarter alone, the company signed21 deals worth more than $5 million. 12 of which were worth $10 million or more. Revenue growth will continue to be the future of Palantir.</p>\n<p>Some of the best business going is government business. For the year, Palantir saw56% of their revenue or $610 million come from government contracts. While the commercial side saw higher year-over-year growth at 107%, a 77% increase in government-based revenue isn't anything to laugh at. One of the more impressive pieces was that we saw happen with the average customer.Revenue increased by 41% year-over-year. Up to $7.9 million per customer from $5.6 million. This is an important metric to keep an eye on as customers hand more and more business over to Palantir as they continue to develop and improve their systems. The other factor playing into this is Palantir pulling larger customers into the fold. The new customers acquired in 2020, generated $42 million in revenue.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9284f5fd3e26d0c55fcd9b2f6355371e\" tg-width=\"1752\" tg-height=\"983\"></p>\n<p>(Company Presentation)</p>\n<p>So all of this and we still sit down 12% today? As I mentioned above, it was the forward forecasts that people were a bit shocked at. Palantir said toexpect revenue growth in excess of 30% for 2021. This would be fantastic news for most companies, but after you just posted a 47% growth year, it is a bit saddening. But as I said, I think they are sandbagging a bit. Analysts are still projecting about a 35% increase for 2021. Something tells me they will outdo that as the year goes on. The company did state that they are targeting $4 billion in revenue by 2025, which carrying 30% per year growth from here will get you. I fully expect that number to creep closer to $5 billion based on current projections. Palantir is going after the \"big fish\" across multiple industries.8 of their customers fall into the Fortune 100, and 12 of the Global 100. As their products continue to develop and improve, their bottom line is only going to get better. I think there is a lot of room to run here in the long term.</p>\n<p><b>What Are The Risks?</b></p>\n<p>One of the up-and-coming risks is the lock-up period ending, which I will touch on below. Besides that, I will look at the government contracts. Yes, they are some of the most important, but that's not to say they come without risk. In the past, Palantir has said they need to focus more so on commercial customers to help the bottom line and to turn a profit (part of the reason for the earnings sell-off). As we can see, they have landed some big-time commercial clients, but that government aspect still exists.</p>\n<p>Something to keep in mind as well is that dealing with the government can lead to crossing some lines that some are not okay with. As reported by the Washington Post,in 2018, more than 200 employees signed a letter to CEO Alex Karp, citing concerns over a partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Multiple other big tech companies have been forced to cut ties with government agencies in the past over potential human rights violations.</p>\n<p>That said, I do really think the company will continue to do very well in the commercial sector and well reduce the overall government exposure overtime.</p>\n<p><b>What's The \"Lock-Up Period\"?</b></p>\n<p>The one concern many have had with Palantir is the lock-up period, which ends on February 19th (Friday). Typically, this is where we will see the lows kick in on IPO's that go this route, but it is not always the case.</p>\n<blockquote>\n Looking at 15 stocks that sawtheir lock-up periods expire in the first two weeks of October, the majority of shares started to fall in the days before the expiration date, prior to bouncing back three to five days afterwards. However, some saw virtually no selling pressure on the day and the share price immediately climbed once the lock-up had ended.\n</blockquote>\n<p>What is it? Well in short, instead of an IPO where new shares of the company are created and are underwritten by an intermediary, we have a Direct Listing. This is wherethe business sells shares directly to the public without the help of any intermediaries. It does not involve any underwriters or other intermediaries, there are no new shares issued. This means the largest shareholders in the business can only freely sell their shares after the IPO lock-up expiration. Spotify (SPOT) and Slack (WORK) are two examples of companies that went the Direct Listing route. That said, neither of these companies had lock-up periods for employees.</p>\n<p>So what does this mean? Well, given thatMarketWatch said:</p>\n<blockquote>\n For Palantir, though, years of venture-capital investments have created more than enough shares to launch public trading: roughly 1.64 billion, though that grows to 2.17 billion in a fully diluted formula that includes vesting options.\n</blockquote>\n<p>It means that with roughly 497 million current outstanding shares, that we could see about 1.7 billion shares hit the market. Now that is not really likely, but what it does mean is that there should be less than average selling pressure on the stock considering the usually IPO accounts for 10% of shares released, while Palantir released over 20% based on the numbers provided above.</p>\n<p>Where are we now? Well as per the study quoted earlier, we are right on track. The stock is selling off in an orderly fashion right before the lock-up period ends. Now we have to wait and see what the rebound looks like. Or does everyone sell high and try and buy even lower? It is a bit of a wait-and-see. Let's take a look at what the technicals show us.</p>\n<p><b>What Does The Price Say?</b></p>\n<p>Taking a quick peek at the technicals, we can see a couple of really strong support levels. Firstly, we broke through a pretty big one at $30 today and did so in a big way, which is a bit concerning in the short term, but there is potential for a quick bounce to re-test that $30 mark quickly. If these markets have taught us anything, it's that they can move quickly! In a normal case, this is probably where my stop would be. Either the dip gets bought up and this stock will fly back up to $40, or we see Palantir drop down to ~$23. Because the stock is so new, we really do not have a good gauge for support. Looking below we can see roughly where I am pulling $23 out of. This is a pretty substantial move from here yet. Would be about 20% to the downside. It is a totally different approach. Scale in, and scale-out.... all while knowing when to cut it loose. If you want to play this safe, watch for the bounce and try and get in then. I do think there will be a decent bounce that takes the stock back to $36-$40, but the question is when. This is not a long-term hold for me personally.</p>\n<p><b>Wrap-Up</b></p>\n<p>As you can see, there is a lot to like about the direction in which the company is headed. The valuation can always be debated, but at the end of the day, the value is whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Palantir is a revenue machine and it is not going to slow down. They are playing with the \"big fish\" and the revenue will follow as long as they can continue to deliver on their goals. I am currently long, but watching closely as the lock-up period ends this week. In the past, Palantir has said they need to focus more so on commercial customers to help the bottom line and to turn a profit (part of the reason for the earnings sell-off). As we can see, they have landed some big-time commercial clients, but that government aspect still exists.\nSomething to keep in mind as well is that dealing with the government can lead to crossing some lines that some are not okay with. As reported by the Washington Post,in 2018, more than 200 employees signed a letter to CEO Alex Karp, citing concerns over a partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Multiple other big tech companies have been forced to cut ties with government agencies in the past over potential human rights violations.\nThat said, I do really think the company will continue to do very well in the commercial sector and well reduce the overall government exposure overtime.\nWhat's The \"Lock-Up Period\"?\nThe one concern many have had with Palantir is the lock-up period, which ends on February 19th (Friday). Typically, this is where we will see the lows kick in on IPO's that go this route, but it is not always the case.\n\n Looking at 15 stocks that sawtheir lock-up periods expire in the first two weeks of October, the majority of shares started to fall in the days before the expiration date, prior to bouncing back three to five days afterwards. However, some saw virtually no selling pressure on the day and the share price immediately climbed once the lock-up had ended.\n\nWhat is it? Well in short, instead of an IPO where new shares of the company are created and are underwritten by an intermediary, we have a Direct Listing. This is wherethe business sells shares directly to the public without the help of any intermediaries. It does not involve any underwriters or other intermediaries, there are no new shares issued. This means the largest shareholders in the business can only freely sell their shares after the IPO lock-up expiration. Spotify (SPOT) and Slack (WORK) are two examples of companies that went the Direct Listing route. That said, neither of these companies had lock-up periods for employees.\nSo what does this mean? Well, given thatMarketWatch said:\n\n For Palantir, though, years of venture-capital investments have created more than enough shares to launch public trading: roughly 1.64 billion, though that grows to 2.17 billion in a fully diluted formula that includes vesting options.\n\nIt means that with roughly 497 million current outstanding shares, that we could see about 1.7 billion shares hit the market. Now that is not really likely, but what it does mean is that there should be less than average selling pressure on the stock considering the usually IPO accounts for 10% of shares released, while Palantir released over 20% based on the numbers provided above.\nWhere are we now? Well as per the study quoted earlier, we are right on track. The stock is selling off in an orderly fashion right before the lock-up period ends. Now we have to wait and see what the rebound looks like. Or does everyone sell high and try and buy even lower? It is a bit of a wait-and-see. Let's take a look at what the technicals show us.\nWhat Does The Price Say?\nTaking a quick peek at the technicals, we can see a couple of really strong support levels. Firstly, we broke through a pretty big one at $30 today and did so in a big way, which is a bit concerning in the short term, but there is potential for a quick bounce to re-test that $30 mark quickly. If these markets have taught us anything, it's that they can move quickly! In a normal case, this is probably where my stop would be. But have not had a position until today, the game changes a bit as I take on more risk.\n\n(Source: TC2000.com)\nWhen a stock as popular as Palantir tanks like we saw today, one of two things happens. Either the dip gets bought up and this stock will fly back up to $40, or we see Palantir drop down to ~$23. Because the stock is so new, we really do not have a good gauge for support. Looking below we can see roughly where I am pulling $23 out of. This is a pretty substantial move from here yet. Would be about 20% to the downside. If $23 breaks, it could go even further south.\n\n(Source: TC2000.com)\nWhen trying to catch the bounce, you have to be prepared to average down. It is a totally different approach. Scale in, and scale-out.... all while knowing when to cut it loose. If you want to play this safe, watch for the bounce and try and get in then. I do think there will be a decent bounce that takes the stock back to $36-$40, but the question is when. This is not a long-term hold for me personally.\nWrap-Up\nAs you can see, there is a lot to like about the direction in which the company is headed. The valuation can always be debated, but at the end of the day, the value is whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Palantir is a revenue machine and it is not going to slow down. They are playing with the \"big fish\" and the revenue will follow as long as they can continue to deliver on their goals. I am currently long, but watching closely as the lock-up period ends this week. If you are going long, make sure to scale in over the next couple of days and place your bets for which way this goes next week. But after the stock's recent surge, should they be confident about Square's growth opportunities?</p>\n<p><b>What does Square do?</b></p>\n<p>Square is afintech (financial technology)company that operates two payment-related ecosystems. Its classic sellers business, which comprises business solutions such as its famous square card reader, has seen slowed growth during the pandemic from its strong storefront presence. Revenue increased 5% and gross profit increased 13%.</p>\n<p>The company invested in omnichannel capabilities to reach more clients and offer greater options for storefronts, and omnichannel gross payment volume increased by a third, accounting for half of the total. Square sees mid-size businesses as a huge addressable market, and this category demonstrated high potential for profitability, with gross profit growing at double the rate of other categories.</p>\n<p>Its Cash App ecosystem was a huge success as people began to rely more heavily on digital payments while under lockdown. But it was<b>Bitcoin</b>(CRYPTO:BTC)that made the biggest splash on Square's business. Revenue for the company increased 141% in Q4, but without Bitcoin, is was only up 23%.</p>\n<p>In the fourth quarter, Cash App active customers increased 50% over 2019 to 36 million, and Square only spent $5 per customer in acquisition cost. There are 80 million customers who have transacted at least once with the Cash App system, and Square is focusing on creating greater value for customers to keep them loyal. Its results so far indicate that new transacting customers adopt other Cash App features like Cash Card and Bitcoin trading in greater numbers. It's also a key to greater profitability, as gross profit per customer increased 70% over the prior year in the fourth quarter.</p>\n<p>Bitcoin is increasingly becoming an important part of Cash App. Bitcoin trading grew more than 250% year over year, and Square bought $190 million of the cryptocurrency in the fourth quarter, because it sees it as a necessary internet currency. CEO Jack Dorsey said on the recent earnings call, \"We believe it has the highest probability of empowering more people in the economy in a fair way.\"So long as Bitcoin's price is flying, it's great for Cash App.</p>\n<p><b>So is growth finished?</b></p>\n<p>The short answer is no.</p>\n<p>Storefronts struggled during the pandemic, but as lockdowns ease, seller business revenue and GPV should see higher growth. Electronic payments are still in their infancy, and Square is still in high-growth mode, especially Cash App.</p>\n<p>The best indication of growth, in my opinion, is its ease in pivoting into new businesses, especially ahead of the curve. Its white square card reader was a real and useful innovation when it was launched, and Cash App expanded its operations with user-friendly features. The focus on Bitcoin makes Cash App somewhat risky, as we saw high volatility in its stock price last week. But it was also a harbinger of the current obsession with cryptocurrency, and if that changes, Square is likely to make that decision faster than others.</p>\n<p><b>About the stock price</b></p>\n<p>Shares of Square trade at an outrageous valuation of roughly 600 times trailing-12-month earnings. But it has rewarded investors in the past, gaining more than 400% over the past three years. The company's fourth-quarter earnings continued the trend, and investors were happy enough to keep bidding up its stock. But after the stock's recent surge, should they be confident about Square's growth opportunities?\nWhat does Square do?\nSquare is afintech (financial technology)company that operates two payment-related ecosystems. Its classic sellers business, which comprises business solutions such as its famous square card reader, has seen slowed growth during the pandemic from its strong storefront presence. Revenue increased 5% and gross profit increased 13%.\nThe company invested in omnichannel capabilities to reach more clients and offer greater options for storefronts, and omnichannel gross payment volume increased by a third, accounting for half of the total. Square sees mid-size businesses as a huge addressable market, and this category demonstrated high potential for profitability, with gross profit growing at double the rate of other categories.\nIts Cash App ecosystem was a huge success as people began to rely more heavily on digital payments while under lockdown. But it wasBitcoin(CRYPTO:BTC)that made the biggest splash on Square's business. Revenue for the company increased 141% in Q4, but without Bitcoin, is was only up 23%.\nIn the fourth quarter, Cash App active customers increased 50% over 2019 to 36 million, and Square only spent $5 per customer in acquisition cost. There are 80 million customers who have transacted at least once with the Cash App system, and Square is focusing on creating greater value for customers to keep them loyal. Its results so far indicate that new transacting customers adopt other Cash App features like Cash Card and Bitcoin trading in greater numbers. It's also a key to greater profitability, as gross profit per customer increased 70% over the prior year in the fourth quarter.\nBitcoin is increasingly becoming an important part of Cash App. Bitcoin trading grew more than 250% year over year, and Square bought $190 million of the cryptocurrency in the fourth quarter, because it sees it as a necessary internet currency. CEO Jack Dorsey said on the recent earnings call, \"We believe it has the highest probability of empowering more people in the economy in a fair way.\"So long as Bitcoin's price is flying, it's great for Cash App.\nSo is growth finished?\nThe short answer is no.\nStorefronts struggled during the pandemic, but as lockdowns ease, seller business revenue and GPV should see higher growth. Electronic payments are still in their infancy, and Square is still in high-growth mode, especially Cash App.\nThe best indication of growth, in my opinion, is its ease in pivoting into new businesses, especially ahead of the curve. Its white square card reader was a real and useful innovation when it was launched, and Cash App expanded its operations with user-friendly features. The focus on Bitcoin makes Cash App somewhat risky, as we saw high volatility in its stock price last week. But it was also a harbinger of the current obsession with cryptocurrency, and if that changes, Square is likely to make that decision faster than others.\nAbout the stock price\nShares of Square trade at an outrageous valuation of roughly 600 times trailing-12-month earnings. But it has rewarded investors in the past, gaining more than 400% over the past three years.
