automakers.\n\nGUANGZHOU, China — Chinese search giant Baidu is in talks to raise money for a standalone artificial intelligence semiconductor company, a person with knowledge of the matter told CNBC.\nThe move is emblematic of an ongoing push among China’s biggest technology firms to boost their prowess in the chip sector. And for Baidu, it marks a further effort to diversify its business well beyond advertising.\nBaidu’s Nasdaq-traded shares jumped more than 3.5% after hours. They climbed 6.67% on Tuesday.\nBaidu’s chip company would be a subsidiary, with the search giant likely to be the majority shareholder, the person said. Venture capital firms GGV and IDG Capital are involved in early stage discussions to invest in Baidu’s chip firm, the source added. Both firms have extensive investments in China.\nBaidu declined to comment when contacted by CNBC. IDG Capital was not immediately available for comment.Calls to GGV’s offices in Singapore, Shanghai and Beijing went unanswered.\nCurrently, Baidu has an in-house chip unit that has helped to develop its Kunlun semiconductors, designed to process huge amounts of data for artificial intelligence applications. A stock's relative strength line, found in daily and weekly charts atinvestors.com, compares the stock's daily price performance to the S&P 500. An upward-sloping RS line means the stock is outperforming the S&P 500. Distributions are not subject to federal income tax and state income tax (in most states) when used for specified educational purposes.</p><p>Custodial accounts do not have those tax advantages on school-related use. “If your primary goal is to invest for education, 529 plans offer the greatest tax advantages, control and flexibility. Custodial accounts can be good options to transfer wealth for just about anything else,”wroteRichard Polimeni, director of Bank of America’s Education Savings Programs.</p><p>Whose account is it anyway?</p><p>In a custodial account, parents, grandparents or other adults can make the investment decisions in the account. Still, the account is considered to be an asset owned by the child, according toFidelity Investments.</p><p>Once the child formally becomes an adult in the eyes of the law, the account goes under their control. The age varies from 18 to 25, depending on the state, Fidelity Investments said.</p><p>It’s the child’s money, even though the parent is managing it. If the money vanishes in a losing bet or poor management, Mungavin said children could hold it against their parents.</p><p>Whether there is profit or loss, the experience will help shape a child’s views on investing, he added.
