Which vehicle maker offers the best deal based on market opportunity, scale, revenue model, growth prospects and valuation? I will compare Ford against NIO in each category and issue a final verdict at the end.</p>\n<p><b>Ford vs. NIO: The battle for the global electric vehicle market is heating up</b></p>\n<p>Although there is a world of difference between Ford and NIO, both companies are set to go toe-to-toe in the rapidly growing global electric vehicle market. Ford’s fleet is not yet EV-focused but this is going to change: Feeling that the EV race is heating up, Ford said it is accelerating its electrification plan by investing $30B into its EV manufacturing capabilities until 2025. Ford’s previous capital plan called for a $22B investment in zero-emission vehicles. Ford also set an ambitious sales goal: 40% of its global sales will be electric within the next decade and 33% of pickup truck sales. Electric vehicle sales account for just 1% of Ford's sales today. As Ford is phasing out combustion engines, it is set to evolve into an all-electric vehicle maker by 2040.</p>\n<p><b>Market opportunity</b></p>\n<p>In 2020, 3.2m electric vehicles were sold in the world which represented a small market share of just 4.2%. China, however, was responsible for buying 41% of all electric vehicles in the world in 2020. Chinese buyers purchased 1.3m electric vehicles last year and sales are set to grow fast as Beijing seeks to boost EV adoption. The second largest market for electric vehicles was Europe which accounted for 42% of global EV sales. The US is only the third-largest market for plug-in electric vehicles in the world.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b48c23b32134542f51227d9b1b612887\" tg-width=\"1083\" tg-height=\"863\"><span>(Source: Wikipedia)</span></p>\n<p>China, by far, is the fastest growing EV market in the world, although Europe is catching up fast, in part due to a legislative efforts to increase adoption of zero-emission passenger vehicles and because of massive investments in a Europe-wide charging station network. NIO is on the cusp of entering the European market in a bid to grow market share in the world’s second-largest EV market before the competition is ready.</p>\n<p>Beijing is a driver behind the electrification of the Chinese auto industry: The government wants to see a twenty percent share of electric vehicles for new car sales by 2025 which will drive EV penetration in NIO’s home market.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9871e44eaf69adb27151425887870ace\" tg-width=\"739\" tg-height=\"454\"><span>(Source:Schroders)</span></p>\n<p>Turning to growth projections.</p>\n<p>With more favorable government policies for EV makers in places like China and Europe, these markets are poised to see the fastest sales growth and the highest EV adoption rates in the world. China is not only the largest market due to population size but is also expected to outperform all other markets in the world in EV sales until 2030.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/61d19dff2f34e2d8828aca854e85d84a\" tg-width=\"825\" tg-height=\"565\"><span>(Source:McKinsey)</span></p>\n<p>Since China has a larger total market size, a higher EV adoption rate, stronger expected sales growth and a more favorable regulatory framework, the winner here would be: NIO.</p>\n<p><b>Scale and manufacturing competence</b></p>\n<p>Ford has a century’s worth of manufacturing experience. But Ford, so far, has only one all-electric vehicle in its product line-up that compares to NIO: The Mustang Mach-E SUV. In 2022, Ford will begin to sell the all-electric F-150 Lightening which builds on the success of Ford’s best-selling pick-up truck. NIO already has a stronger product catalog including the 5-seater ES6 SUV, the 5-seater coupe SUV EC6 and the ES8, a 6-seater and 7-seater full-sized SUV.</p>\n<p>Since NIO is solely focused on producing EVs and occupies a very small and defined niche, the Chinese firm has an advantage as far as EV-manufacturing expertise goes. The question is how long this advantage can last. Ford has extensive experience in building cars and can leverage a global manufacturing base to ramp up EV production faster than any niche EV maker could ever hope to achieve. This makes Ford a very serious rival not only to Tesla (TSLA) in the US, but also to NIO abroad. Ford is accelerating its electrification plans and it has the resources and the ambition to become a leader in EVs within the next decade. Ford’s proposed $30B spending on the electrification of its fleet will accelerate its transformation and turn Ford into a long term threat to other EV makers.</p>\n<p>Winner here: Ford.</p>\n<p><b>Differentiation and BaaS revenue model</b></p>\n<p>Both Ford and NIO know about the importance of differentiation in a market that will only get more competitive over time, which is why both companies are investing heavily in a related field that can break or solidify dominance in the EV market: Battery technology.</p>\n<p>Ford is forming a joint venture with South Korean battery technology company SK Innovation to secure supply of traction battery cells and array modules. The joint venture is meant to accelerate battery deliveries and will produce approximately 60 GWh annually, enough to cover 25% of Ford’s estimated annual energy demand by 2030. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has formed its own joint venture to secure battery supply.</p>\n<p>The difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.</p>\n<p>The BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Decoupling battery costs from vehicle prices creates an entirely new revenue stream on a subscription basis for NIO. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. The battery subscription model also binds customers to NIO, potentially increasing customer lifetime value.</p>\n<p>Ford and NIO are primed to benefit from falling battery costs for electric vehicles as they ramp up capital allocations. As more investments flow into developing more efficient batteries, performance will go up and costs will go down which should drive EV adoption and benefit all EV makers. This is because lower battery prices make EVs more competitive to passenger vehicles with combustion engines. But since NIO is structuring a part of its business model explicitly around battery subscriptions, NIO could benefit more than Ford.</p>\n<p>Battery costs for EVs have decreased 70% since 2014, based on information provided by investment firm Schroders, and are set to decrease more this decade.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c42acb75905affe7570a2f399ea3192f\" tg-width=\"758\" tg-height=\"449\"><span>(Source: Schroders)</span></p>\n<p>The “BaaS” model is genius and could develop into a $500M a year revenue opportunity for NIO long term. Although Ford is ramping up its investments in battery technology, the winner in this category is: NIO.</p>\n<p><b>Sales growth and valuation</b></p>\n<p>Ford’s sales in May grew 4.1% Y/Y but electrified vehicle sales (including hybrids) surged 184% Y/Y as Ford sold a record 10,364 EVs/hybrids in May. Escape electrified sales and Explorer Hybrid grew sales at 125% and 132% Y/Y showing strong customer uptake. NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles last month including 3,017 ES6s, 1,412 ES8s and 2,282 EC6s. Total Y/Y delivery growth for May was 95.3%.</p>\n<p>Ford's sales are fifty-four times larger than NIO's which creates more sales growth and revaluation potential for NIO.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/df5a0a393e44ed74241c5effcdd92350\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"419\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>The difference in valuation between Ford and NIO is like the difference between night and day. This is because Ford is still seen as a mature vehicle maker with expected enterprise sales growth in the low-to-mid digits, despite explosive growth in the EV category. Ford is expected to grow revenues by 33% until FY 2025 (base year: FY 2020) and NIO by 808%!</p>\n<p>Due to these differences in sales growth, NIO is the complete opposite of Ford, at least as far as valuation goes. The Chinese EV-maker is expected to see sales and delivery growth close to 100% this year and since NIO is only dealing in EVs, NIO gets a much higher market-cap-to-sales ratio than Ford.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/817605c6b1e82c03d0473ea570d32b8f\" tg-width=\"506\" tg-height=\"406\"><span>(Source: Author)</span></p>\n<p><b>NIO has larger risks...</b></p>\n<p>NIO is the more risky venture, but also the one that offers the most promise. Government policy favors EV-makers like NIO. The potential for total global sales growth is larger for NIO as it operates from a smaller revenue base compared to Ford. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.</p>\n<p><b>Final verdict</b></p>\n<p>NIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. You pay a high price for this growth but the market opportunity for NIO is immense.</p>\n<p>Ford’s EV sales are booming and the percentage of EV sales will increase as the vehicle maker electrifies its fleet. Ford has a lot of potential in the EV market but since EV sales are still a relatively low percentage of total sales, it will take a long time for Ford to complete its transformation.</p>\n<p>If you believe in the potential of the global EV market, buy NIO. The US is only the third-largest market for plug-in electric vehicles in the world.\n(Source: Wikipedia)\nChina, by far, is the fastest growing EV market in the world, although Europe is catching up fast, in part due to a legislative efforts to increase adoption of zero-emission passenger vehicles and because of massive investments in a Europe-wide charging station network. NIO is on the cusp of entering the European market in a bid to grow market share in the world’s second-largest EV market before the competition is ready.\nBeijing is a driver behind the electrification of the Chinese auto industry: The government wants to see a twenty percent share of electric vehicles for new car sales by 2025 which will drive EV penetration in NIO’s home market.\n(Source:Schroders)\nTurning to growth projections.\nWith more favorable government policies for EV makers in places like China and Europe, these markets are poised to see the fastest sales growth and the highest EV adoption rates in the world. China is not only the largest market due to population size but is also expected to outperform all other markets in the world in EV sales until 2030.\n(Source:McKinsey)\nSince China has a larger total market size, a higher EV adoption rate, stronger expected sales growth and a more favorable regulatory framework, the winner here would be: NIO.\nScale and manufacturing competence\nFord has a century’s worth of manufacturing experience. But Ford, so far, has only one all-electric vehicle in its product line-up that compares to NIO: The Mustang Mach-E SUV. In 2022, Ford will begin to sell the all-electric F-150 Lightening which builds on the success of Ford’s best-selling pick-up truck. NIO already has a stronger product catalog including the 5-seater ES6 SUV, the 5-seater coupe SUV EC6 and the ES8, a 6-seater and 7-seater full-sized SUV.\nSince NIO is solely focused on producing EVs and occupies a very small and defined niche, the Chinese firm has an advantage as far as EV-manufacturing expertise goes. The question is how long this advantage can last. Ford has extensive experience in building cars and can leverage a global manufacturing base to ramp up EV production faster than any niche EV maker could ever hope to achieve. This makes Ford a very serious rival not only to Tesla (TSLA) in the US, but also to NIO abroad. Ford is accelerating its electrification plans and it has the resources and the ambition to become a leader in EVs within the next decade. Ford’s proposed $30B spending on the electrification of its fleet will accelerate its transformation and turn Ford into a long term threat to other EV makers.\nWinner here: Ford.\nDifferentiation and BaaS revenue model\nBoth Ford and NIO know about the importance of differentiation in a market that will only get more competitive over time, which is why both companies are investing heavily in a related field that can break or solidify dominance in the EV market: Battery technology.\nFord is forming a joint venture with South Korean battery technology company SK Innovation to secure supply of traction battery cells and array modules. The joint venture is meant to accelerate battery deliveries and will produce approximately 60 GWh annually, enough to cover 25% of Ford’s estimated annual energy demand by 2030. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has formed its own joint venture to secure battery supply.\nThe difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.\nThe BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Decoupling battery costs from vehicle prices creates an entirely new revenue stream on a subscription basis for NIO. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. The battery subscription model also binds customers to NIO, potentially increasing customer lifetime value.\nFord and NIO are primed to benefit from falling battery costs for electric vehicles as they ramp up capital allocations. As more investments flow into developing more efficient batteries, performance will go up and costs will go down which should drive EV adoption and benefit all EV makers. This is because lower battery prices make EVs more competitive to passenger vehicles with combustion engines. But since NIO is structuring a part of its business model explicitly around battery subscriptions, NIO could benefit more than Ford.\nBattery costs for EVs have decreased 70% since 2014, based on information provided by investment firm Schroders, and are set to decrease more this decade.\n(Source: Schroders)\nThe “BaaS” model is genius and could develop into a $500M a year revenue opportunity for NIO long term. Although Ford is ramping up its investments in battery technology, the winner in this category is: NIO.\nSales growth and valuation\nFord’s sales in May grew 4.1% Y/Y but electrified vehicle sales (including hybrids) surged 184% Y/Y as Ford sold a record 10,364 EVs/hybrids in May. Escape electrified sales and Explorer Hybrid grew sales at 125% and 132% Y/Y showing strong customer uptake. NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles last month including 3,017 ES6s, 1,412 ES8s and 2,282 EC6s. Total Y/Y delivery growth for May was 95.3%.\nFord's sales are fifty-four times larger than NIO's which creates more sales growth and revaluation potential for NIO.\nData by YCharts\nThe difference in valuation between Ford and NIO is like the difference between night and day. This is because Ford is still seen as a mature vehicle maker with expected enterprise sales growth in the low-to-mid digits, despite explosive growth in the EV category. Ford is expected to grow revenues by 33% until FY 2025 (base year: FY 2020) and NIO by 808%!\nDue to these differences in sales growth, NIO is the complete opposite of Ford, at least as far as valuation goes. The Chinese EV-maker is expected to see sales and delivery growth close to 100% this year and since NIO is only dealing in EVs, NIO gets a much higher market-cap-to-sales ratio than Ford.\n(Source: Author)\nNIO has larger risks...\nNIO is the more risky venture, but also the one that offers the most promise. Government policy favors EV-makers like NIO. The potential for total global sales growth is larger for NIO as it operates from a smaller revenue base compared to Ford. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.\nFinal verdict\nNIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. You pay a high price for this growth but the market opportunity for NIO is immense.\nFord’s EV sales are booming and the percentage of EV sales will increase as the vehicle maker electrifies its fleet. Even before COVID-19, the problem was becoming unwieldy. Ironically, despite adding $4T+ in debt over the last year, the pandemic may have given the US Government short-term reprieve as it gave the Federal Reserve a green light to drop rates back to zero.</p>\n<p>First and foremost, this took pressure off the Treasury as it refinanced the ballooning short-term debt outstanding at lower rates. However, even more relief occurred as the Federal Reserve absorbed +90% of the long term debt issued since last March. This allowed more room in the private markets to purchase the issuance of new short-term Treasury Bills. Because the Fed pays interest revenue back to the Treasury, and since interest rates on Treasury Bills are sitting at 0%, this has effectively given the Treasury a <b>$4.5T loan at 0% interest</b> in 15 months!</p>\n<p>While this sounds like a great deal, it comes with major risks and has now put the Fed in a box. This will be explained in detail over two articles. Part 1 will explain why the Fed can no longer raise interest rates, and Part 2 will show how the Fed is unable to taper and may even need to increase Treasury purchases to maintain control over the long end of the yield curve.</p>\n<p><b>$28 Trillion and Growing</b></p>\n<p>The US Government cannot stop spending money. Spending is now far in excess of what is being collected in tax revenues. The US economy continues to experience nominal increases in growth, which has increased Federal Tax receipts, but Federal Spending is growing far faster. Figure 1 below, shows this clear trend.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8b5576e9901f1f8310629d45af16836a\" tg-width=\"1024\" tg-height=\"512\"></p>\n<p><i>Source – Treasurydirect.gov</i></p>\n<p>Excess spending has to be paid for using debt. This massive excess in spending has led to proliferate borrowing by the Federal Government resulting in over $28T in total debt outstanding. Now, multiply that by 28!</p>\n<p>For most governments, this would be unsustainable as interest rates would rise. This puts pressure on a borrower to bring down spending. The US Government has benefited from three major advantages that are not available to most governments. First, it has the exorbitant privilege of issuing the global reserve currency (for now), which creates far more demand for dollars than would otherwise be the case. The petro-dollar should have its own dedicated article, so that will be skipped in this analysis.</p>\n<p>It is important to highlight two other key facts that have allowed spending and borrowing to continue unabated. It has been able to borrow from the Social Security Trust Fund, and the Federal Reserve has absorbed a large chunk of debt issuance in recent years. Not only does this equate to $11T in interest-free loans (as all interest payments return back to the Treasury), but it has prevented the private markets from absorbing all new debt issuance keeping interest rates lower. As Figure 3 below shows, since Jan 2010, the private markets have “only” had to absorb $9T of the $14.5T issued.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2dee6e735c0a3c1421eb321c0eae4b54\" tg-width=\"1024\" tg-height=\"512\"></p>\n<p><i>Source – Treasurydirect.gov andhttps://fred.stlouisfed.org/</i></p>\n<p>Since Jan 2020, the numbers are even more stark. The Treasury has issued $4.5T, of which the Fed has taken on $2.6T (<i>Note: The Fed balance sheet has expanded by greater than $4T, but not all of this was Treasury Debt</i>). Looking deeper into the numbers shows the Fed had an even bigger appetite for longer-dated maturities. With Short Term rates at 0%, the Treasury can sell Treasury Bills to the private sector and still have an interest-free loan. Thus, it has been critical for the Fed to absorb almost all (~90%) the long-term debt issued by the Treasury to keep interest payments low!</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/89bf299c6c054e65d3317aa72d0f686a\" tg-width=\"1024\" tg-height=\"512\"></p>\n<p><i>Source – Treasurydirect.gov</i></p>\n<p><b>The Treasury has so far avoided higher interest payments</b></p>\n<p>Zooming back out, the three charts below show why the maneuvers over the last year have been so important. Take one more look at the US Debt load, this time categorized by vehicle. Non-Marketable is debt the government owes itself, Notes represent 1-10 year maturity, Bills less than 1 year, and Bonds >10 years. The two charts below show both the absolute growth in debt and how the makeup of the debt has changed. Since 2008, Notes have experienced the largest growth increasing from 25% of total outstanding to 42%. Bills are the highest risk to the Treasury because higher interest rates will affect Bills within months, so it is important to note that in 2015 during the last rate hike cycle they accounted for only $1.4T but now make up $4.3T. This means every .25% rate hike will almost immediately add $10B to Federal spending. The chart below clearly shows the impact of the last interest rate hike cycle. The Pink line shows how Bills followed the Fed hike cycle topping out near 2.25%.</p>\n<p>If the Fed attempted to raise rates in a similar fashion it would immediately add $100B to Federal Spending on ONLY interest due for Treasury Bills. In a scenario where the Fed shrunk its balance sheet back to $1T (no more interest free loans) AND raised interest rates back to 4%, the Treasury would incur an extra $160B in interest rates for Treasury Bills and a whopping $290B on Treasury Notes! This would not factor in any new debt added over that time, which now includes an extra $.5T a year just on interest payments!</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/04501c54f465fba412ffbf77b81a559f\" tg-width=\"1024\" tg-height=\"512\"></p>\n<p><i>Source – Treasurydirect.gov</i></p>\n<p>The chart below shows a much clearer impact of how falling interest rates have kept debt payments relatively stable for nearly 20 years. The chart shows the average weighted interest rate and the annualized monthly interest payments. The orange line (average weighted interest rate) is moving in direct opposition to the growth in debt seen above. In the last rate tightening cycle, the chart shows just how quickly higher interest rates increased the debt burden ($150B). How do these interest payments compare to tax revenue collected by the IRS? The charts and graphs attempted to show the trends and put hard numbers behind what most people already know anecdotally. This article does not even touch on how devastating higher interest rates would be on the housing market, corporate debt market, and consumer debt market. Instead it only focuses on the Treasury, which just so happens to be run by the old chair of the Federal Reserve (Janet Yellen).</p>\n<p>None of this math is overly complex, and all the data is freely available on the Treasury and Fed website. This begs the question, does the Fed realize interest rates cannot go up or are they only looking in the rear-view mirror and assuming that an increase to 2.25% will be similar to 2015 which was “only” derailed by COVID-19? To reiterate, the drop in interest rates gave the Treasury <i>relief</i> from the higher interest payments. Next time they might not even get halfway to 2% with the added debt burden.<b>Unfortunately, for the Fed, their box is tighter than most realize.</b>If the Fed hasn’t figured it out by now,<b>even before they fail to raise interest rates, they will be unable taper Quantitative Easing (debt monetization) much less shrink their balance sheet, without serious consequences.</b>That data will be reviewed in Part 2. As Figure 3 below shows, since Jan 2010, the private markets have “only” had to absorb $9T of the $14.5T issued.\n\nSource – Treasurydirect.gov andhttps://fred.stlouisfed.org/\nSince Jan 2020, the numbers are even more stark. The Treasury has issued $4.5T, of which the Fed has taken on $2.6T (Note: The Fed balance sheet has expanded by greater than $4T, but not all of this was Treasury Debt). Looking deeper into the numbers shows the Fed had an even bigger appetite for longer-dated maturities. With Short Term rates at 0%, the Treasury can sell Treasury Bills to the private sector and still have an interest-free loan. Thus, it has been critical for the Fed to absorb almost all (~90%) the long-term debt issued by the Treasury to keep interest payments low!\n\nSource – Treasurydirect.gov\nThe Treasury has so far avoided higher interest payments\nZooming back out, the three charts below show why the maneuvers over the last year have been so important. Take one more look at the US Debt load, this time categorized by vehicle. Non-Marketable is debt the government owes itself, Notes represent 1-10 year maturity, Bills less than 1 year, and Bonds >10 years. The two charts below show both the absolute growth in debt and how the makeup of the debt has changed. Since 2008, Notes have experienced the largest growth increasing from 25% of total outstanding to 42%. Non-Marketable went the other way, shrinking from 45% to 25% as the Social Security Trust Fund is no longer a source to borrow from.\n\nSource – Treasurydirect.gov\n\nSource – Treasurydirect.gov\nIt is important to notice the growth in Treasury Bills above. Bills are the highest risk to the Treasury because higher interest rates will affect Bills within months, so it is important to note that in 2015 during the last rate hike cycle they accounted for only $1.4T but now make up $4.3T. This means every .25% rate hike will almost immediately add $10B to Federal spending. The chart below clearly shows the impact of the last interest rate hike cycle. The Pink line shows how Bills followed the Fed hike cycle topping out near 2.25%.\nIf the Fed attempted to raise rates in a similar fashion it would immediately add $100B to Federal Spending on ONLY interest due for Treasury Bills. In a scenario where the Fed shrunk its balance sheet back to $1T (no more interest free loans) AND raised interest rates back to 4%, the Treasury would incur an extra $160B in interest rates for Treasury Bills and a whopping $290B on Treasury Notes! This would not factor in any new debt added over that time, which now includes an extra $.5T a year just on interest payments!\n\nSource – Treasurydirect.gov\nThe chart below shows a much clearer impact of how falling interest rates have kept debt payments relatively stable for nearly 20 years. The chart shows the average weighted interest rate and the annualized monthly interest payments. The orange line (average weighted interest rate) is moving in direct opposition to the growth in debt seen above. In the last rate tightening cycle, the chart shows just how quickly higher interest rates increased the debt burden ($150B). The Fed owns very few Treasury Bills ($320B), so those interest payments are NOT returning to the Treasury.\n\nSource – Treasurydirect.gov\nOne final chart to consider. How do these interest payments compare to tax revenue collected by the IRS? In this context, it becomes very clear how much impact the 2015 rate cycle increases had on debt payments.\n\nSource – Treasurydirect.gov\nWrapping Up\nNothing in this article should be surprising to anyone who even closely watches the US Debt situation or follows financial markets. The charts and graphs attempted to show the trends and put hard numbers behind what most people already know anecdotally. This article does not even touch on how devastating higher interest rates would be on the housing market, corporate debt market, and consumer debt market. Instead it only focuses on the Treasury, which just so happens to be run by the old chair of the Federal Reserve (Janet Yellen).\nNone of this math is overly complex, and all the data is freely available on the Treasury and Fed website. This begs the question, does the Fed realize interest rates cannot go up or are they only looking in the rear-view mirror and assuming that an increase to 2.25% will be similar to 2015 which was “only” derailed by COVID-19? To reiterate, the drop in interest rates gave the Treasury relief from the higher interest payments. Next time they might not even get halfway to 2% with the added debt burden.Unfortunately, for the Fed, their box is tighter than most realize.If the Fed hasn’t figured it out by now,even before they fail to raise interest rates, they will be unable taper Quantitative Easing (debt monetization) much less shrink their balance sheet, without serious consequences.That data will be reviewed in Part 2. That’s almost double the 23% return for the real estate sector, which is the second-best sector. The S&P 500 is up nearly 12% this year.\nEnergy’s big start to the year means that even if the sector goes nowhere for the rest of 2021, it will still be the best year since 1990 by nearly 10%, according to Bay Crest Partners chief market technician Jonathan Krinsky.\nThe surge in energy stocks comes on the back of a recovery in oil prices, and as investors return to areas of the market that were left out of 2020′s rebound from the pandemic lows. The sector was also starting from a low base. In 2020, the group fell 37.3% for its worst performance since inception in 1989.\nKrinsky is among those saying the upside move is overdone, and his call is to sell crude oil and energy stocks broadly. From a technical standpoint, he noted that the $420 to $450 level acted as support — a floor — for the group during the last decade. But then during the Covid sell-off, the sector plunged below that key level — breaking below $200 — as the pandemic ground economies around the world to a halt.\n\nThe S&P Energy Sector has since recovered and traded as high as $420 on Thursday, inching closer to their prior support level, which now acts as resistance, or where an uptrend could be expected to reverse.\n“Oftentimes when you break a very important support like that, once you come back and test it as resistance, it’s difficult to exceed that — at least on the first try,” Krinsky noted.\nGauging performance from Jan. 1 might seem arbitrary, but he added that the sector’s outperformance is notable from virtually any date. Over the last eight months, the group has returned over 90%, which Krinsky says is more than two times the prior largest such gain over the last three decades.\n“Even on a rolling basis this is somewhat unprecedented,” he said. His bearish call on the sector also stems from other commodities breaking down, including lumber and copper. Bank of America recently noted that the entire sector makes up just 2% of the average long-only portfolio, or less than half the allocation toward Facebook, which sits at 4.2%.\nEnergy still comprises a tiny portion of the S&P 500, but as the sector’s weighting grows, fund managers who shun the space could risk returns.\nMRB Partners on Thursday reiterated its overweight rating on the group, saying the recovery in demand for petroleum products, coupled with ongoing supply constraints, should push oil prices higher, leading to further returns for energy stocks.\n“Strengthening cash flows, leaner cost structures, and better capital discipline position the industry to moderately increase capital returns to shareholders,” strategists led by Salvatore Ruscitti wrote in a note to clients. “Relative performance will benefit from the reflationary backdrop and our expectations for a softer U.S. dollar.”\nWhen it comes to specific stocks, Gilman Hill Asset Management CEO Jenny Harrington owns names includingChevron,OneokandKinder Morgan. The easing of restrictions has enabled the company to reopen 99% of its U.S. theaters. AMC could benefit as seating capacity limitations imposed by state and local governments are raised. Thereleases of multiple movies this summerand later this year that are likely to be hits should also help.</p>\n<p>However, Wall Street clearly believes that AMC's share price has gotten way ahead of its business prospects. The stock is trading at nearly eight times higher than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>\n<p>Clover Health Investments</p>\n<p>Only a few days ago, it looked like <b>Clover Health Investments</b>(NASDAQ:CLOV)might push AMC to the side as the hottest meme stock. Retail investors viewed Clover as a primeshort squeezecandidate.</p>\n<p>Since the beginning of June, shares of Clover Health have jumped more than 65%. Analysts, however, don't expect those gains to last. The average price target for the stock is 25% below the current share price.</p>\n<p>Clover Health's valuation does seem to have gotten out of hand. The healthcare stock currently trades at more than 170 times trailing-12-month sales. That's a nosebleed level, especially considering that the company is the subject of investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission.</p>\n<p>Still, Clover Health could deliver improving financial results this year. The company hopes to significantly increase its membership by targeting the original Medicare program. This represents a major new market opportunity in addition to its current Medicare Advantage business.</p>\n<p>Sundial Growers</p>\n<p>At one point earlier this year, <b>Sundial Growers</b>(NASDAQ:SNDL)appeared to be a legitimate contender to become the biggest winner among meme stocks. The Canadian marijuana stock vaulted more than 520% higher year to date before giving up much of its gains. However, Sundial's share price has still more than doubled in 2021.</p>\n<p>Analysts anticipate that the pot stock could fall even further. The consensus price target for Sundial reflects a 23% discount to its current share price. One analyst even thinks the stock could sink 55%.</p>\n<p>There certainly are reasons to be pessimistic about Sundial's core cannabis business. The company's net cannabis revenue fell year over year in the first quarter of 2021. Although Sundial is taking steps that it hopes will turn things around, it remains to be seen if those efforts will succeed.</p>\n<p>Sundial's business deals could give investors reasons for optimism. After all, the company posted positive adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) in Q1 due to its investments.</p>\n<p>However, the cash that Sundial is using to make these investments has come at the cost of increased dilution of its stock. But the guide was even more out of this world, showing analysts they're way off base in their models. This is causing the bears to move from one argument to another as each gets debunked through raw financial numbers. But now they're walking into a crypto debate where the bulls have more transparency and data on their side than any other time. Unfortunately, the crypto bear thesis is not the one to take this time around. Gaming revenue growth will not slow as there's a huge RTX 3000 series opportunity with less than 4% of the GPU market share, just as supply receives a much-needed reprieve with crypto migrating to a new SKU altogether. The market appreciates the mitigated risk with crypto revenue transparency, allowing the stock to sustain a premium valuation.</p>\n<p><b>Paper Launch, Remember?</b></p>\n<p>At first, the bears postulated the RTX 3000 series debut was a paper launch because there was such limited supply. Gamers across the internet were up in arms because so few cards could be bought, sold out everywhere. Limited supply has continued to plague the 3000 series since then.</p>\n<p>But Gaming revenue has gone from $1.65B before the RTX 3000 launch to $2.76B in the latest quarter, causing this bear talking point to fade over the last several months.</p>\n<p>If the 3000 cards were so limited in supply, what accounts for the consistent monstrous quarter-over-quarter growth in the Gaming division?</p>\n<p>Ah, I'm glad you asked.</p>\n<p>It's clearly the selling of more than just a few (paper) RTX 3000 cards.</p>\n<p><b>Crypto Is The Talking Point, Again</b></p>\n<p>That question brings us to the latest bear talking point - crypto. If the bears move to this point, they have given up on the paper launch argument. That's because to mine crypto, you need a powerful GPU, and that powerful GPU is an RTX 3000 series card. So either there are very few 3000 series being sold (paper launch) - which doesn't allow a crypto bubble to be an issue - or there are indeed enough 3000 cards to meaningfully show up on the top line and debate how much is due to crypto-related sales.</p>\n<p>But the crypto debate is much harder to prove for either side. Historically it has been a bit of a closed box in terms of what cards have been sold to crypto miners and which ones have gotten into \"real\" gamers' hands. The bears can point to this and say that whatever RTX 3000 series cards have been sold over the last several months were for crypto mining.</p>\n<p>And you might be wondering, \"Why is this a big deal? Revenue is revenue, regardless of who's buying the card.\"</p>\n<p>This might be true if it wasn't for the volatile nature of the cryptocurrency world. Mining crypto is a profitability equation of how high the hash rate of a processor is (how fast it can complete the crypto calculations on the blockchain to receive a reward) and how much that particular crypto is worth on the market. The higher the crypto price, the higher the incentive to mine (the reward is bigger in pure dollar terms).</p>\n<p>But in 2018, after the \"crypto bubble\" deflated when the price of Bitcoin (BTC-USD) and Ethereum (ETH-USD) plummeted 85% from then all-time highs, Nvidia's revenue took a hit. Suddenly the cards of 2018 were not profitable to mine at depressed prices. It appeared a lot of the Gaming division sales were tied to crypto, or at least enough to knock growth off-kilter. As a result, the company experienced negative top-line growth throughout the following year.</p>\n<p>This is why the word crypto spoken by management, along with the crypto volatility with Bitcoin and Ethereum 50% off the latest all-time highs, brings a shiver down the market's spine.</p>\n<p>It sees 2018 playing out all over again.</p>\n<p><b>Facing The Crypto Thesis Head On</b></p>\n<p>However, bulls have more data over the last two quarters than they did in the 2018 crypt bust, with the strongest talking point to date coming just a few weeks ago. That point is the new RTX 3000 SKUs which will physically limit the hash rate of the cards, deterring miners from buying cards and opening up supply to gamers for typical GPU use.</p>\n<p>But if crypto is a major part of Gaming division revenue and the company is going to hardware limit the hash rates to make them unprofitable to mine crypto, future Gaming revenue will undoubtedly suffer.</p>\n<p>Right?</p>\n<p>Apparently not; guidance isn't telling us that story. With the current quarter running from May through July and the new \"hash lite\" RTX cards shipping at the end of May, guidance was still $6.3B in revenue versus The Street consensus of $5.48B.</p>\n<p>The hidden gem in the guide was the additional data bulls have needed for some time: a breakdown of revenue from CMPs (crypto mining processors). The company created CMPs to serve the industrial crypto mining community to provide better performance (by focusing processing power specifically on hashing and removing graphic rendering capabilities) and separate the supply between miners and gamers. This works to benefit investors as this breakdown of revenue allows for better risk analysis of overall revenue.</p>\n<p>And that is the key to the crypto cycle this time around.</p>\n<p>The guide for FQ2 included $400M of revenue for CMP products (as shown under the OEM/Other category). You might see this as a huge risk (relative to overall revenue), but this has now made the risk a solid number. Before this CMP breakdown, the market and analysts had to rely on rough estimates based in wide ranges to understand how much the Gaming division had downside risk built into it due to crypto.</p>\n<p>Why has the market responded positively to the expected 158% quarter-over-quarter growth, which follows 114% sequential growth in the just reported quarter for CMP? Because the market can assess the risk to the downside now - uncertainty has been mitigated.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/10c92c645e86c40c1af4be579b56fab8\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"403\"><span>Data byYCharts</span></p>\n<p>The market knows $400M is the mark now. The rest of the divisions are more understood, and channel checks are more accurate there. The question mark has been crypto, and the company is now being the most transparent about it.</p>\n<p><b>Outlook For Gaming</b></p>\n<p>This then begs the question: how much will be cannibalized from the Gaming division?</p>\n<p>Not much if we continue doing the math on the FQ2 guide. After backing out the $400M of CMP sales, we're left with a guide of $5.9B. That's still $420M of outperformance analysts didn't account for, while the Gaming division will technically see two \"hits\" to its growth, each for the same reason. Not only is there a separate product line for crypto, but the RTX cards will also have their inherent mining performance throttled. This should provide no reason to continue using RTX cards as the best value for mining (relatively cheap compared to ASICs with still profitable processing power).</p>\n<p>Of course, not all of the $420M guidance raise is for Gaming. Still, considering it's the largest division with 48% of revenue in the last quarter, it stands that analysts will meaningfully raise estimates for the Gaming division.</p>\n<p>But then, where's the Gaming growth coming from in the quarters ahead?</p>\n<p>Gamers will be the clear demand driver now. Supply should now make its way toward the gamers who have been trying to get a 3000 series card for the last eight months. You don't have to Google very much to find folks still patiently - and impatiently - waiting for their 3000 series card.</p>\n<p>There's a huge runway for upgrades from prior RTX cards and GTX cards as the market penetration of RTX 30XX cards is still less than 4%, around 3.64%, according to Steam's monthly hardware survey. And that's growing each month since January across the SKU board. This compares to the current gamer market share of all other Nvidia cards of 68.6%.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/828d8670b5f989162d31b002ead58ab0\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"109\"><span>(Source:Steam Hardware Survey)</span></p>\n<p>And if you're concerned about the lack of upgrades from RTX 20XX cards since they're only one generation behind, the non-RTX portion of the market makes up 55.11%. So there's a huge greenfield for upgrades to the 3000 series ahead with supply opening up to the real gamers.</p>\n<p><b>Outperformance To Continue</b></p>\n<p>Management has been tackling the market's concerns head-on, contrary to 2018. It has been able to capitalize on a strained crypto market because its GPU-based CMP processors are above and beyond anything anyone has ever produced. This time it did it correctly with much better transparency - the market appreciates the calculated risk.</p>\n<p>There's still further bullishness as Nvidia enters a crypto market dominated by ASICs, which tend to have very limited supply and very long lead times. Nvidia is capitalizing on the market using its larger contract position with fabs like Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) and Samsung (OTC:SSNLF)(OTC:SSNNF) to produce competitive mining processors.</p>\n<p>Eventually, the transition of Ethereum (ETH-USD) to proof-of-stake from proof-of-work may serve as a headwind rather than a tailwind. Still, this risk is much further out as not only will the transition start in early 2022, but miners are expected to remain on the network for at least a year after the transition.</p>\n<p>It comes down to this: if the market has the data it needs to calculate the at-risk revenue easily, the market won't be as skittish to value Nvidia at the multiples it has grown to. Add in the huge upside to revenue for FQ2 with gamers now able to dive into the consumer market more fully, and you have a continuation for the Gaming division to outperform through at least year-end, if not well into 2022. But the guide was even more out of this world, showing analysts they're way off base in their models. This is causing the bears to move from one argument to another as each gets debunked through raw financial numbers. But now they're walking into a crypto debate where the bulls have more transparency and data on their side than any other time. Unfortunately, the crypto bear thesis is not the one to take this time around. Gaming revenue growth will not slow as there's a huge RTX 3000 series opportunity with less than 4% of the GPU market share, just as supply receives a much-needed reprieve with crypto migrating to a new SKU altogether. The market appreciates the mitigated risk with crypto revenue transparency, allowing the stock to sustain a premium valuation.\nPaper Launch, Remember?\nAt first, the bears postulated the RTX 3000 series debut was a paper launch because there was such limited supply. Gamers across the internet were up in arms because so few cards could be bought, sold out everywhere. Limited supply has continued to plague the 3000 series since then.\nBut Gaming revenue has gone from $1.65B before the RTX 3000 launch to $2.76B in the latest quarter, causing this bear talking point to fade over the last several months.\nIf the 3000 cards were so limited in supply, what accounts for the consistent monstrous quarter-over-quarter growth in the Gaming division?\nAh, I'm glad you asked.\nIt's clearly the selling of more than just a few (paper) RTX 3000 cards.\nCrypto Is The Talking Point, Again\nThat question brings us to the latest bear talking point - crypto. If the bears move to this point, they have given up on the paper launch argument. That's because to mine crypto, you need a powerful GPU, and that powerful GPU is an RTX 3000 series card. So either there are very few 3000 series being sold (paper launch) - which doesn't allow a crypto bubble to be an issue - or there are indeed enough 3000 cards to meaningfully show up on the top line and debate how much is due to crypto-related sales.\nBut the crypto debate is much harder to prove for either side. Historically it has been a bit of a closed box in terms of what cards have been sold to crypto miners and which ones have gotten into \"real\" gamers' hands. The bears can point to this and say that whatever RTX 3000 series cards have been sold over the last several months were for crypto mining.\nAnd you might be wondering, \"Why is this a big deal? Revenue is revenue, regardless of who's buying the card.\"\nThis might be true if it wasn't for the volatile nature of the cryptocurrency world. Mining crypto is a profitability equation of how high the hash rate of a processor is (how fast it can complete the crypto calculations on the blockchain to receive a reward) and how much that particular crypto is worth on the market. The higher the crypto price, the higher the incentive to mine (the reward is bigger in pure dollar terms).\nBut in 2018, after the \"crypto bubble\" deflated when the price of Bitcoin (BTC-USD) and Ethereum (ETH-USD) plummeted 85% from then all-time highs, Nvidia's revenue took a hit. Suddenly the cards of 2018 were not profitable to mine at depressed prices. It appeared a lot of the Gaming division sales were tied to crypto, or at least enough to knock growth off-kilter. As a result, the company experienced negative top-line growth throughout the following year.\nThis is why the word crypto spoken by management, along with the crypto volatility with Bitcoin and Ethereum 50% off the latest all-time highs, brings a shiver down the market's spine.\nIt sees 2018 playing out all over again.\nFacing The Crypto Thesis Head On\nHowever, bulls have more data over the last two quarters than they did in the 2018 crypt bust, with the strongest talking point to date coming just a few weeks ago. That point is the new RTX 3000 SKUs which will physically limit the hash rate of the cards, deterring miners from buying cards and opening up supply to gamers for typical GPU use.\nBut if crypto is a major part of Gaming division revenue and the company is going to hardware limit the hash rates to make them unprofitable to mine crypto, future Gaming revenue will undoubtedly suffer.\nRight?\nApparently not; guidance isn't telling us that story. With the current quarter running from May through July and the new \"hash lite\" RTX cards shipping at the end of May, guidance was still $6.3B in revenue versus The Street consensus of $5.48B.\nThe hidden gem in the guide was the additional data bulls have needed for some time: a breakdown of revenue from CMPs (crypto mining processors). The company created CMPs to serve the industrial crypto mining community to provide better performance (by focusing processing power specifically on hashing and removing graphic rendering capabilities) and separate the supply between miners and gamers. This works to benefit investors as this breakdown of revenue allows for better risk analysis of overall revenue.\nAnd that is the key to the crypto cycle this time around.\nThe guide for FQ2 included $400M of revenue for CMP products (as shown under the OEM/Other category). You might see this as a huge risk (relative to overall revenue), but this has now made the risk a solid number. Before this CMP breakdown, the market and analysts had to rely on rough estimates based in wide ranges to understand how much the Gaming division had downside risk built into it due to crypto.\nWhy has the market responded positively to the expected 158% quarter-over-quarter growth, which follows 114% sequential growth in the just reported quarter for CMP? Because the market can assess the risk to the downside now - uncertainty has been mitigated.\nData byYCharts\nThe market knows $400M is the mark now. The rest of the divisions are more understood, and channel checks are more accurate there. The question mark has been crypto, and the company is now being the most transparent about it.\nOutlook For Gaming\nThis then begs the question: how much will be cannibalized from the Gaming division?\nNot much if we continue doing the math on the FQ2 guide. After backing out the $400M of CMP sales, we're left with a guide of $5.9B. That's still $420M of outperformance analysts didn't account for, while the Gaming division will technically see two \"hits\" to its growth, each for the same reason. Not only is there a separate product line for crypto, but the RTX cards will also have their inherent mining performance throttled. This should provide no reason to continue using RTX cards as the best value for mining (relatively cheap compared to ASICs with still profitable processing power).\nOf course, not all of the $420M guidance raise is for Gaming. Still, considering it's the largest division with 48% of revenue in the last quarter, it stands that analysts will meaningfully raise estimates for the Gaming division.\nBut then, where's the Gaming growth coming from in the quarters ahead?\nGamers will be the clear demand driver now. Supply should now make its way toward the gamers who have been trying to get a 3000 series card for the last eight months. You don't have to Google very much to find folks still patiently - and impatiently - waiting for their 3000 series card.\nThere's a huge runway for upgrades from prior RTX cards and GTX cards as the market penetration of RTX 30XX cards is still less than 4%, around 3.64%, according to Steam's monthly hardware survey. And that's growing each month since January across the SKU board. This compares to the current gamer market share of all other Nvidia cards of 68.6%.\n(Source:Steam Hardware Survey)\nAnd if you're concerned about the lack of upgrades from RTX 20XX cards since they're only one generation behind, the non-RTX portion of the market makes up 55.11%. So there's a huge greenfield for upgrades to the 3000 series ahead with supply opening up to the real gamers.\nOutperformance To Continue\nManagement has been tackling the market's concerns head-on, contrary to 2018. It has been able to capitalize on a strained crypto market because its GPU-based CMP processors are above and beyond anything anyone has ever produced. This time it did it correctly with much better transparency - the market appreciates the calculated risk.\nThere's still further bullishness as Nvidia enters a crypto market dominated by ASICs, which tend to have very limited supply and very long lead times. Nvidia is capitalizing on the market using its larger contract position with fabs like Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) and Samsung (OTC:SSNLF)(OTC:SSNNF) to produce competitive mining processors.\nEventually, the transition of Ethereum (ETH-USD) to proof-of-stake from proof-of-work may serve as a headwind rather than a tailwind. Still, this risk is much further out as not only will the transition start in early 2022, but miners are expected to remain on the network for at least a year after the transition.\nIt comes down to this: if the market has the data it needs to calculate the at-risk revenue easily, the market won't be as skittish to value Nvidia at the multiples it has grown to. Add in the huge upside to revenue for FQ2 with gamers now able to dive into the consumer market more fully, and you have a continuation for the Gaming division to outperform through at least year-end, if not well into 2022. Alphabet</b></p>\n<p>Alphabet's stock price has trounced the broader market, up 42% year to date. The online tech titan initially reported sluggish growth in 2020 as the pandemic slowed digital ad spending, which drives the bulk of Google search and YouTube revenue. But ad spending has been recovering strongly over the last few quarters.</p>\n<p>In the first quarter, revenue grew 34% year over year, on top of 15% in the year-ago quarter. More people are relying on search to find vaccine information and look for jobs, which is boosting Google's advertising revenue in the search business. YouTube ad spending is also picking up as more people are turning to the video platform to watch reviews and shop for products.</p>\n<p>During the Q1 earnings call, Alphabet's Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler said, \"We've seen great momentum in TrueView for Action ads, with a number of advertisers using the format doubling over the past year.\"</p>\n<p>Alphabet is also a leader in the booming cloud services market, where Google Cloud revenue surged 46% year over year. What's notable about this performance is that Google Cloud grew faster than the cloud market overall. This is an important market share gain for Google, which continues to trail the leaders,<b>Microsoft</b> and <b>Amazon</b>.</p>\n<p>Overall, Alphabet has a wide competitive moat, with a massive base of users who rely on Gmail, Google Maps, search, and YouTube every day.</p>\n<p>Of course, government regulation is a long-term threat here. Alphabet just reached a settlement with regulators in France, where it will pay $270 million in fines over an antitrust dispute. But this regulatory risk seems to already be reflected in the stock's valuation.</p>\n<p>Analysts expect this FAANG stock to grow earnings per share at an annualized rate of 21% over the next five years, which is more than enough to support a forward P/E of 28.7 at the stock's current price.</p>\n<p><b>2. Dell Technologies</b></p>\n<p>Many investors remember Dell from the glory days of the PC boom a few decades ago. While the company benefited from a healthy PC market in the first quarter, the reason investors should consider buying shares is the momentum Dell is experiencing with its information technology business, along with other catalysts on the horizon.</p>\n<p>After posting a 1% decline in revenue through the first half of fiscal 2021, Dell has seen revenue accelerate to 9% in fiscal Q4 2021 and 12% in fiscal Q1 2022.</p>\n<p>\"There has been a substantial acceleration in digital transformation across the globe and you can see it in our results with record first-quarter revenue of $24.5 billion,\" Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke said in the earnings report.</p>\n<p>The stock has doubled off its lows from a year ago, reflecting the company's improving outlook coming out of the pandemic. But it could still head higher, for a few reasons.</p>\n<p>First, Dell is rapidly paying down its debt, which stood at $37.9 billion at the end of April, down from $41.6 billion at the end of January. Debt reduction not only lowers financial risk for Dell, but it also boosts earnings growth, since lower debt also means lower interest expense. The recent reduction in debt lowered interest expense by approximately $162 million last quarter and contributed to a 59% jump in net profit.</p>\n<p>Dell is also spinning off its 81% interest in <b>VMware</b>, which will provide proceeds of $9.3 billion to $9.7 billion to accelerate the reduction in debt.</p>\n<p>Ultimately, valuation is what counts. The stock trades at a low price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 12 times forward earnings estimates. China is not only the largest market due to population size but is also expected to outperform all other markets in the world in EV sales until 2030.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/61d19dff2f34e2d8828aca854e85d84a\" tg-width=\"825\" tg-height=\"565\"><span>(Source:McKinsey)</span></p>\n<p>Since China has a larger total market size, a higher EV adoption rate, stronger expected sales growth and a more favorable regulatory framework, the winner here would be: NIO.</p>\n<p><b>Scale and manufacturing competence</b></p>\n<p>Ford has a century’s worth of manufacturing experience. But Ford, so far, has only one all-electric vehicle in its product line-up that compares to NIO: The Mustang Mach-E SUV. In 2022, Ford will begin to sell the all-electric F-150 Lightening which builds on the success of Ford’s best-selling pick-up truck. NIO already has a stronger product catalog including the 5-seater ES6 SUV, the 5-seater coupe SUV EC6 and the ES8, a 6-seater and 7-seater full-sized SUV.</p>\n<p>Since NIO is solely focused on producing EVs and occupies a very small and defined niche, the Chinese firm has an advantage as far as EV-manufacturing expertise goes. The question is how long this advantage can last. Ford has extensive experience in building cars and can leverage a global manufacturing base to ramp up EV production faster than any niche EV maker could ever hope to achieve. This makes Ford a very serious rival not only to Tesla (TSLA) in the US, but also to NIO abroad. Ford is accelerating its electrification plans and it has the resources and the ambition to become a leader in EVs within the next decade. Ford’s proposed $30B spending on the electrification of its fleet will accelerate its transformation and turn Ford into a long term threat to other EV makers.</p>\n<p>Winner here: Ford.</p>\n<p><b>Differentiation and BaaS revenue model</b></p>\n<p>Both Ford and NIO know about the importance of differentiation in a market that will only get more competitive over time, which is why both companies are investing heavily in a related field that can break or solidify dominance in the EV market: Battery technology.</p>\n<p>Ford is forming a joint venture with South Korean battery technology company SK Innovation to secure supply of traction battery cells and array modules. The joint venture is meant to accelerate battery deliveries and will produce approximately 60 GWh annually, enough to cover 25% of Ford’s estimated annual energy demand by 2030. NIO is also investing in battery technology and has formed its own joint venture to secure battery supply.</p>\n<p>The difference to Ford is that NIO’s battery investment strategy revolves around a battery subscription model, also called “battery-as-a-service”, which creates a strong, long term revenue opportunity for the Chinese vehicle maker. Under this “BaaS” model, users who buy a NIO electric vehicle get a 70,000 RMB initial discount, equivalent to $10,800, and can sign up for a monthly subscription to rent a rechargeable 70 kWh battery. Batteries can then be exchanged at one of NIO’s battery-swapping stations which can be found in most big Chinese cities. A battery subscription costs 980 RMB monthly which is the equivalent of $150.</p>\n<p>The BaaS model has a couple of benefits for both the vehicle maker and the user: Purchasing an electric vehicle from NIO gets a lot more affordable due to the up-front discount and the subscription model ensures that users benefit from advancement in battery technology and better performance over time. Decoupling battery costs from vehicle prices creates an entirely new revenue stream on a subscription basis for NIO. Revenues from “BaaS” subscriptions could be used to increase the density of NIO’s network of charging/replacement stations. The battery subscription model also binds customers to NIO, potentially increasing customer lifetime value.</p>\n<p>Ford and NIO are primed to benefit from falling battery costs for electric vehicles as they ramp up capital allocations. As more investments flow into developing more efficient batteries, performance will go up and costs will go down which should drive EV adoption and benefit all EV makers. This is because lower battery prices make EVs more competitive to passenger vehicles with combustion engines. Although Ford is ramping up its investments in battery technology, the winner in this category is: NIO.</p>\n<p><b>Sales growth and valuation</b></p>\n<p>Ford’s sales in May grew 4.1% Y/Y but electrified vehicle sales (including hybrids) surged 184% Y/Y as Ford sold a record 10,364 EVs/hybrids in May. Escape electrified sales and Explorer Hybrid grew sales at 125% and 132% Y/Y showing strong customer uptake. NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles last month including 3,017 ES6s, 1,412 ES8s and 2,282 EC6s. Total Y/Y delivery growth for May was 95.3%.</p>\n<p>Ford's sales are fifty-four times larger than NIO's which creates more sales growth and revaluation potential for NIO.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/df5a0a393e44ed74241c5effcdd92350\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"419\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>The difference in valuation between Ford and NIO is like the difference between night and day. This is because Ford is still seen as a mature vehicle maker with expected enterprise sales growth in the low-to-mid digits, despite explosive growth in the EV category. Ford is expected to grow revenues by 33% until FY 2025 (base year: FY 2020) and NIO by 808%!</p>\n<p>Due to these differences in sales growth, NIO is the complete opposite of Ford, at least as far as valuation goes. Government policy favors EV-makers like NIO. The potential for total global sales growth is larger for NIO as it operates from a smaller revenue base compared to Ford. But there are also a few things that work against NIO. For example, recalls due to production defects would be a much bigger challenge for NIO to overcome than for Ford which can rely on a global service and distribution network. NIO’s valuation is also not without risk as an unexpected slowing of sales growth due to production setbacks would leave a much larger dent in the financials.</p>\n<p><b>Final verdict</b></p>\n<p>NIO is definitely the more “sexy” vehicle maker. Strong adoption and sales growth in China and Europe support NIO. Its super smart BaaS model which decouples vehicle purchase prices from battery costs is genius. You pay a high price for this growth but the market opportunity for NIO is immense.</p>\n<p>Ford’s EV sales are booming and the percentage of EV sales will increase as the vehicle maker electrifies its fleet. Ford has a lot of potential in the EV market but since EV sales are still a relatively low percentage of total sales, it will take a long time for Ford to complete its transformation.</p>\n<p>If you believe in the potential of the global EV market, buy NIO. First, it has the exorbitant privilege of issuing the global reserve currency (for now), which creates far more demand for dollars than would otherwise be the case. It has been able to borrow from the Social Security Trust Fund, and the Federal Reserve has absorbed a large chunk of debt issuance in recent years. Not only does this equate to $11T in interest-free loans (as all interest payments return back to the Treasury), but it has prevented the private markets from absorbing all new debt issuance keeping interest rates lower. Non-Marketable is debt the government owes itself, Notes represent 1-10 year maturity, Bills less than 1 year, and Bonds >10 years. The two charts below show both the absolute growth in debt and how the makeup of the debt has changed. Since 2008, Notes have experienced the largest growth increasing from 25% of total outstanding to 42%. This means every .25% rate hike will almost immediately add $10B to Federal spending. The chart below clearly shows the impact of the last interest rate hike cycle. The Pink line shows how Bills followed the Fed hike cycle topping out near 2.25%.</p>\n<p>If the Fed attempted to raise rates in a similar fashion it would immediately add $100B to Federal Spending on ONLY interest due for Treasury Bills. In a scenario where the Fed shrunk its balance sheet back to $1T (no more interest free loans) AND raised interest rates back to 4%, the Treasury would incur an extra $160B in interest rates for Treasury Bills and a whopping $290B on Treasury Notes! This is causing the bears to move from one argument to another as each gets debunked through raw financial numbers. But now they're walking into a crypto debate where the bulls have more transparency and data on their side than any other time. Unfortunately, the crypto bear thesis is not the one to take this time around. Gaming revenue growth will not slow as there's a huge RTX 3000 series opportunity with less than 4% of the GPU market share, just as supply receives a much-needed reprieve with crypto migrating to a new SKU altogether. The market appreciates the mitigated risk with crypto revenue transparency, allowing the stock to sustain a premium valuation.</p>\n<p><b>Paper Launch, Remember?</b></p>\n<p>At first, the bears postulated the RTX 3000 series debut was a paper launch because there was such limited supply. Gamers across the internet were up in arms because so few cards could be bought, sold out everywhere. Limited supply has continued to plague the 3000 series since then.</p>\n<p>But Gaming revenue has gone from $1.65B before the RTX 3000 launch to $2.76B in the latest quarter, causing this bear talking point to fade over the last several months.</p>\n<p>If the 3000 cards were so limited in supply, what accounts for the consistent monstrous quarter-over-quarter growth in the Gaming division?</p>\n<p>Ah, I'm glad you asked.</p>\n<p>It's clearly the selling of more than just a few (paper) RTX 3000 cards.</p>\n<p><b>Crypto Is The Talking Point, Again</b></p>\n<p>That question brings us to the latest bear talking point - crypto. If the bears move to this point, they have given up on the paper launch argument. That's because to mine crypto, you need a powerful GPU, and that powerful GPU is an RTX 3000 series card. So either there are very few 3000 series being sold (paper launch) - which doesn't allow a crypto bubble to be an issue - or there are indeed enough 3000 cards to meaningfully show up on the top line and debate how much is due to crypto-related sales.</p>\n<p>But the crypto debate is much harder to prove for either side. Historically it has been a bit of a closed box in terms of what cards have been sold to crypto miners and which ones have gotten into \"real\" gamers' hands. The bears can point to this and say that whatever RTX 3000 series cards have been sold over the last several months were for crypto mining.</p>\n<p>And you might be wondering, \"Why is this a big deal? Revenue is revenue, regardless of who's buying the card.\"</p>\n<p>This might be true if it wasn't for the volatile nature of the cryptocurrency world. Mining crypto is a profitability equation of how high the hash rate of a processor is (how fast it can complete the crypto calculations on the blockchain to receive a reward) and how much that particular crypto is worth on the market. The higher the crypto price, the higher the incentive to mine (the reward is bigger in pure dollar terms).</p>\n<p>But in 2018, after the \"crypto bubble\" deflated when the price of Bitcoin (BTC-USD) and Ethereum (ETH-USD) plummeted 85% from then all-time highs, Nvidia's revenue took a hit. Suddenly the cards of 2018 were not profitable to mine at depressed prices. It appeared a lot of the Gaming division sales were tied to crypto, or at least enough to knock growth off-kilter. As a result, the company experienced negative top-line growth throughout the following year.</p>\n<p>This is why the word crypto spoken by management, along with the crypto volatility with Bitcoin and Ethereum 50% off the latest all-time highs, brings a shiver down the market's spine.</p>\n<p>It sees 2018 playing out all over again.</p>\n<p><b>Facing The Crypto Thesis Head On</b></p>\n<p>However, bulls have more data over the last two quarters than they did in the 2018 crypt bust, with the strongest talking point to date coming just a few weeks ago. That point is the new RTX 3000 SKUs which will physically limit the hash rate of the cards, deterring miners from buying cards and opening up supply to gamers for typical GPU use.</p>\n<p>But if crypto is a major part of Gaming division revenue and the company is going to hardware limit the hash rates to make them unprofitable to mine crypto, future Gaming revenue will undoubtedly suffer.</p>\n<p>Right?</p>\n<p>Apparently not; guidance isn't telling us that story. With the current quarter running from May through July and the new \"hash lite\" RTX cards shipping at the end of May, guidance was still $6.3B in revenue versus The Street consensus of $5.48B.</p>\n<p>The hidden gem in the guide was the additional data bulls have needed for some time: a breakdown of revenue from CMPs (crypto mining processors). The company created CMPs to serve the industrial crypto mining community to provide better performance (by focusing processing power specifically on hashing and removing graphic rendering capabilities) and separate the supply between miners and gamers. This works to benefit investors as this breakdown of revenue allows for better risk analysis of overall revenue.</p>\n<p>And that is the key to the crypto cycle this time around.</p>\n<p>The guide for FQ2 included $400M of revenue for CMP products (as shown under the OEM/Other category). You might see this as a huge risk (relative to overall revenue), but this has now made the risk a solid number. Before this CMP breakdown, the market and analysts had to rely on rough estimates based in wide ranges to understand how much the Gaming division had downside risk built into it due to crypto.</p>\n<p>Why has the market responded positively to the expected 158% quarter-over-quarter growth, which follows 114% sequential growth in the just reported quarter for CMP? Because the market can assess the risk to the downside now - uncertainty has been mitigated.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/10c92c645e86c40c1af4be579b56fab8\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"403\"><span>Data byYCharts</span></p>\n<p>The market knows $400M is the mark now. The rest of the divisions are more understood, and channel checks are more accurate there. The question mark has been crypto, and the company is now being the most transparent about it.</p>\n<p><b>Outlook For Gaming</b></p>\n<p>This then begs the question: how much will be cannibalized from the Gaming division?</p>\n<p>Not much if we continue doing the math on the FQ2 guide. After backing out the $400M of CMP sales, we're left with a guide of $5.9B. That's still $420M of outperformance analysts didn't account for, while the Gaming division will technically see two \"hits\" to its growth, each for the same reason. Not only is there a separate product line for crypto, but the RTX cards will also have their inherent mining performance throttled. This should provide no reason to continue using RTX cards as the best value for mining (relatively cheap compared to ASICs with still profitable processing power).</p>\n<p>Of course, not all of the $420M guidance raise is for Gaming. Still, considering it's the largest division with 48% of revenue in the last quarter, it stands that analysts will meaningfully raise estimates for the Gaming division.</p>\n<p>But then, where's the Gaming growth coming from in the quarters ahead?</p>\n<p>Gamers will be the clear demand driver now. Supply should now make its way toward the gamers who have been trying to get a 3000 series card for the last eight months. You don't have to Google very much to find folks still patiently - and impatiently - waiting for their 3000 series card.</p>\n<p>There's a huge runway for upgrades from prior RTX cards and GTX cards as the market penetration of RTX 30XX cards is still less than 4%, around 3.64%, according to Steam's monthly hardware survey. And that's growing each month since January across the SKU board. This compares to the current gamer market share of all other Nvidia cards of 68.6%.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/828d8670b5f989162d31b002ead58ab0\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"109\"><span>(Source:Steam Hardware Survey)</span></p>\n<p>And if you're concerned about the lack of upgrades from RTX 20XX cards since they're only one generation behind, the non-RTX portion of the market makes up 55.11%. So there's a huge greenfield for upgrades to the 3000 series ahead with supply opening up to the real gamers.</p>\n<p><b>Outperformance To Continue</b></p>\n<p>Management has been tackling the market's concerns head-on, contrary to 2018. It has been able to capitalize on a strained crypto market because its GPU-based CMP processors are above and beyond anything anyone has ever produced. This time it did it correctly with much better transparency - the market appreciates the calculated risk.</p>\n<p>There's still further bullishness as Nvidia enters a crypto market dominated by ASICs, which tend to have very limited supply and very long lead times. Nvidia is capitalizing on the market using its larger contract position with fabs like Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) and Samsung (OTC:SSNLF)(OTC:SSNNF) to produce competitive mining processors.</p>\n<p>Eventually, the transition of Ethereum (ETH-USD) to proof-of-stake from proof-of-work may serve as a headwind rather than a tailwind. Still, this risk is much further out as not only will the transition start in early 2022, but miners are expected to remain on the network for at least a year after the transition.</p>\n<p>It comes down to this: if the market has the data it needs to calculate the at-risk revenue easily, the market won't be as skittish to value Nvidia at the multiples it has grown to. Add in the huge upside to revenue for FQ2 with gamers now able to dive into the consumer market more fully, and you have a continuation for the Gaming division to outperform through at least year-end, if not well into 2022. YouTube ad spending is also picking up as more people are turning to the video platform to watch reviews and shop for products.</p>\n<p>During the Q1 earnings call, Alphabet's Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler said, \"We've seen great momentum in TrueView for Action ads, with a number of advertisers using the format doubling over the past year.\"</p>\n<p>Alphabet is also a leader in the booming cloud services market, where Google Cloud revenue surged 46% year over year. What's notable about this performance is that Google Cloud grew faster than the cloud market overall. This is an important market share gain for Google, which continues to trail the leaders,<b>Microsoft</b> and <b>Amazon</b>.</p>\n<p>Overall, Alphabet has a wide competitive moat, with a massive base of users who rely on Gmail, Google Maps, search, and YouTube every day.</p>\n<p>Of course, government regulation is a long-term threat here. Alphabet just reached a settlement with regulators in France, where it will pay $270 million in fines over an antitrust dispute. But this regulatory risk seems to already be reflected in the stock's valuation.</p>\n<p>Analysts expect this FAANG stock to grow earnings per share at an annualized rate of 21% over the next five years, which is more than enough to support a forward P/E of 28.7 at the stock's current price.</p>\n<p><b>2. Dell Technologies</b></p>\n<p>Many investors remember Dell from the glory days of the PC boom a few decades ago. While the company benefited from a healthy PC market in the first quarter, the reason investors should consider buying shares is the momentum Dell is experiencing with its information technology business, along with other catalysts on the horizon.</p>\n<p>After posting a 1% decline in revenue through the first half of fiscal 2021, Dell has seen revenue accelerate to 9% in fiscal Q4 2021 and 12% in fiscal Q1 2022.</p>\n<p>\"There has been a substantial acceleration in digital transformation across the globe and you can see it in our results with record first-quarter revenue of $24.5 billion,\" Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke said in the earnings report.</p>\n<p>The stock has doubled off its lows from a year ago, reflecting the company's improving outlook coming out of the pandemic. But it could still head higher, for a few reasons.</p>\n<p>First, Dell is rapidly paying down its debt, which stood at $37.9 billion at the end of April, down from $41.6 billion at the end of January. Debt reduction not only lowers financial risk for Dell, but it also boosts earnings growth, since lower debt also means lower interest expense. The recent reduction in debt lowered interest expense by approximately $162 million last quarter and contributed to a 59% jump in net profit.</p>\n<p>Dell is also spinning off its 81% interest in <b>VMware</b>, which will provide proceeds of $9.3 billion to $9.7 billion to accelerate the reduction in debt.</p>\n<p>Ultimately, valuation is what counts. The stock trades at a low price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 12 times forward earnings estimates.
