If you need proof, just take a gander at what's happening over at Robinhood.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/99b3853458b2424e2901821012f5502f\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</p><p><b>Robinhood investors can't get enough of these 50 stocks</b></p><p>Online investing app Robinhood, which is well-known for its commission-free trades, fractional-share investing, and gifting of free stock to new users, gained approximately 3 million new users last year. The interesting thing is that the average age of Robinhood's user base is only 31.</p><p>On one hand, seeing young people put their money to work in the world's greatest wealth creator is a happy sight. Since 1980, the average annual total return (i.e., including dividends) of the<b>S&amp;P 500</b>is over 10%. This is to say that the typical investor in an S&amp;P 500 index fund is doubling their money with dividend reinvestment every seven years.</p><p>But the other side of this coin is that young Robinhood investors are rarely thinking about the long term. The most-held stocks on the platform (known asRobinhood's leaderboard) tend to be a combination of penny stocks, momentum plays, and whatever companies happen to be making news within a given week or month.</p><p>If you don't believe me, take a look at the top 50 stocks on Robinhood's leaderboard as we enter April.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4966ee220f5e18be9c4f617bc27a7be0\" tg-width=\"794\" tg-height=\"724\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/01ba6e34aa3bf02cbe39aed01f0a7022\" tg-width=\"794\" tg-height=\"479\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><b>Retail investors' meme game is strong</b></p><p>If there's one thing that stands out from this list, it's that young Robinhood investors have faith in some highly questionable \"meme stocks.\"</p><p>Without getting too far into the weeds, the meme stocks gained fame on community chat service Reddit. For the better part of 2 1/2 months, retail investors have been working together to buy shares and out-of-the-money call options in heavily short-sold stocks, with the sole purpose of effecting ashort squeeze.</p><p>Since institutional investors and hedge funds hold the vast majority of shares held short, this meme movement has been pitched as a battle between retail investors and the \"big money.\" Examples of highly popular meme stocks include AMC Entertainment, Sundial Growers, GameStop, and Zomedica.</p><p>The concern is that most meme stocks have wildly detached from their underlying fundamentals. Even though euphoria and emotion drive share-price movements in the short term, operating results determine where a stock heads over the long run. In the case of the aforementioned meme stocks:</p><ul><li>AMC Entertainment is being crippled by debt and the ongoing pandemic. It'sunclear if the company can service its debtor cover projected losses over the next two years.</li><li>Sundial Growers has drowned its investorsby issuing 1.15 billion new sharessince Sept. 30. It's one of the slowest-growing marijuana stocks, and could also be one of the last pot stocks to turn profitable on a recurring basis.</li><li>GameStop waited far too long to shift away from a brick-and-mortar retail model to focus on digital gaming. Now it's scurrying to close stores, just to cut its expenses.</li><li>Zomedica just launched its first diagnostics system for cats and dogs but is valued at close to 80 times Wall Street's projected sales for 2023.</li></ul><p>Retail investors are playing a dangerous game that isn't going to end well.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7513496d5257634cbd04a6c701ce002b\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</p><p><b>Robinhood hoses its investors on cannabis</b></p><p>Another thing you'll note about the 50 most-held Robinhood stocks is that the platform hascompletely hamstrung its userswhen it comes to investing in marijuana. Cannabis is projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries of the decade. New Frontier Data believes annualized growth in the U.S., the most lucrative pot market in the world, will average 21% through 2025.</p><p>Yet Robinhood investors are virtually locked out of U.S. pot stocks. Since U.S.marijuana stockscan't list on the major U.S. exchanges, and Robinhood won't allow its users to buy over-the-counter-listed stocks, they're instead funneled into underperforming Canadian pot stocks like Sundial and Canopy Growth.</p><p>Canopy Growth does have a boatload of cash, thanks to a number of equity investments from spirits-giant<b>Constellation Brands</b>, but it's done a poor job of putting that capital to work. It's overpaid for acquisitions, and the company's free-wheeling spending generated huge losses for years. Without U.S. legalization, Canopy's valuationremains a red flag.</p><p>If there's any good news here, it's that Robinhood users at least nowhave a way to buy U.S. pot stocks, even if they can't get the unique exposure they might want. The<b>AdvisorShares Pure U.S. Cannabis ETF</b>(NYSEMKT:MSOS)is an exchange-traded fund specifically focused on a variety of cannabis stocks in the United States. Since it's listed on a major exchange (hint, hint!), Robinhood users can buy it.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8abdae403dddfa42107e06ea5bfddf39\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.</p><p><b>Pedal to the metal</b></p><p>A final trend you'll note from the 50 most-held stocks in April is that Robinhood investors really,<i>really</i>love companies that are developing or producing electric vehicles (EV) or alternative-energy transportation. EV stocks like Tesla, NIO, and Workhorse Group are garnering a lot of attention, with traditionalauto stocksFord and General Motors also widely owned. You'll also note hydrogen fuel-cell solutions provider Plug Power and FuelCell Energy are on the list.</p><p>It's pretty much a given at this point that the future of the automotive industry is anything that doesn't run on fossil fuels. According to the Society of Automotive Engineers of China, by 2035, half of all new-vehicle sales in the world's largest auto market (China) are expected to be alternative energy (95% of which will be EVs). Investors are simply placing their bets early on what should be a runaway growth trend for multiple decades.</p><p>The problem is that investors have historically overestimated the uptake on next-big-thing technologies. Dating back a little more than a quarter of a century, we saw bubbles burst with the internet, business-to-business commerce, genomics, blockchain, 3D printing, marijuana, and so on.</p><p>Electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell stocks will probably suffer the same fate. This isn't to say there won't be winners, so much as to point out that expectations don't come close to matching reality.</p><p>Tesla, for example,wouldn't even be profitablewithout selling regulatory emission credits to other automakers. That's an unnerving realization for one of the largest publicly traded companies. This is to say that the typical investor in an S&P 500 index fund is doubling their money with dividend reinvestment every seven years.But the other side of this coin is that young Robinhood investors are rarely thinking about the long term. For the better part of 2 1/2 months, retail investors have been working together to buy shares and out-of-the-money call options in heavily short-sold stocks, with the sole purpose of effecting ashort squeeze.Since institutional investors and hedge funds hold the vast majority of shares held short, this meme movement has been pitched as a battle between retail investors and the \"big money.\" Examples of highly popular meme stocks include AMC Entertainment, Sundial Growers, GameStop, and Zomedica.The concern is that most meme stocks have wildly detached from their underlying fundamentals. Even though euphoria and emotion drive share-price movements in the short term, operating results determine where a stock heads over the long run. In the case of the aforementioned meme stocks:AMC Entertainment is being crippled by debt and the ongoing pandemic. Cannabis is projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries of the decade. New Frontier Data believes annualized growth in the U.S., the most lucrative pot market in the world, will average 21% through 2025.Yet Robinhood investors are virtually locked out of U.S. pot stocks. Since U.S.marijuana stockscan't list on the major U.S. exchanges, and Robinhood won't allow its users to buy over-the-counter-listed stocks, they're instead funneled into underperforming Canadian pot stocks like Sundial and Canopy Growth.Canopy Growth does have a boatload of cash, thanks to a number of equity investments from spirits-giantConstellation Brands, but it's done a poor job of putting that capital to work. It's overpaid for acquisitions, and the company's free-wheeling spending generated huge losses for years. Without U.S. legalization, Canopy's valuationremains a red flag.If there's any good news here, it's that Robinhood users at least nowhave a way to buy U.S. pot stocks, even if they can't get the unique exposure they might want. Higher rates erode the value of future cash flows, hurting growth-oriented companies particularly hard.</p><p>On Wednesday, the Fed will release new economic and interest rate forecasts, which could indicate Fed officials expect to raise rates by, or even before, 2023.The central bank is expected to acknowledge stronger growth, which should put the Fed’s easy policies in the spotlight, especially given the new $1.9 trillion in federal stimulus spending.</p><p>Investors will also hear from Fed Chair Powell, who is likely to move the stock and bond markets with his commentary, despite being unlikely to offer specifics.</p><p>“There’s this assumption [Powell’s] going to be dovish tomorrow. With another round of spending, it’s hard for him not to be dovish. They are definitely afraid of scaring the market. They’re afraid of disrupting the recovery,” said Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer of Bleakley Advisory Group.</p><p>Rising interest rates have been an overhang for stocks in recent weeks, specifically the tech sector. The yield climbed 5 basis points above 1.67%, the highest since early February 2020 and exceeding its recent high on Friday of 1.642%. The 30-year rate jumped to 2.428%, its highest level since November 2019. Higher rates erode the value of future cash flows, hurting growth-oriented companies particularly hard.</p><p>On Wednesday, the Fed will release new economic and interest rate forecasts, which could indicate Fed officials expect to raise rates by, or even before, 2023.The central bank is expected to acknowledge stronger growth, which should put the Fed’s easy policies in the spotlight, especially given the new $1.9 trillion in federal stimulus spending.</p><p>Investors will also hear from Fed Chair Powell, who is likely to move the stock and bond markets with his commentary, despite being unlikely to offer specifics.</p><p>“There’s this assumption [Powell’s] going to be dovish tomorrow. But the 2021 growth rate would be the fastest since 1984, according to&nbsp;World Bank&nbsp;data.</p>\n<p><b>Tech value stock screen</b></p>\n<p>There are several definitions of value stocks, but generally they are those that trade at lower valuations to earnings and typically grow their sales at a slower pace. That said, an individual value stock might also be considered a growth stock. This is illustrated by the Russell indexes.</p>\n<p>The Russell 1000 Index&nbsp;is made up of the 1,000 largest publicly traded U.S. companies by market capitalization and is reconstituted each year in June. Selected from the Russell 1000 are the Russell 1000 Value Index,which has 849 stocks, and the Russell 1000 Growth Index,which has 453 stocks. The groups overlap, with 291 stocks in both. Salesforce.com&nbsp;was trading at a forward P/E of 68.7 five years ago, and the stock has nearly tripled since then.</p>\n<p>Getting back to the S&amp;P 500 tech value screen, we then added tech-oriented stocks in the communications services sector, including videogame developers and Facebook Inc.,Alphabet Inc.,Netflix Inc.&nbsp;and Twitter Inc..That brought the list up to 82 stocks. So the figures are based on consensus estimates for&nbsp;<i>calendar</i>&nbsp;2020 among analyst polled by FactSet. For Micron Technology Inc.,the 2020 sales growth figure is for the past four reported fiscal quarters through Dec. 3.</p>\n<p><b>The curious case of Facebook</b></p>\n<p>You might wonder about Facebook, which lives in both the value and growth worlds. Its forward P/E valuation of 23.2 is relatively low. But Facebook is very much a growth stock — sales increased 22% last year, and analysts expect even better revenue growth of 25% in 2021.</p>\n<p>Facebook trades for seven times the consensus forward sales estimate, compared to a forward price-to-sales estimate of 5.9 for the entire S&amp;P 500 tech sector. But that “high” price-to-sales ratio may not be so important because it is such a profitable company. Its 2020 operating margin of 50% is among the highest on the list.</p>\n<p>Cody Willard called Facebook a bargain, not only because of its low P/E valuation but because of&nbsp;the long-term growth path&nbsp;for its Oculus virtual-reality hardware and software.</p>\n<p>There are 16 companies on the list that are expected to produce double-digit increases in sales in 2021, including Skyworks Solutions Inc.&nbsp;and Qualcomm Inc..Both are expected to grow their revenues by 21% this year.</p>\n<p><b>‘Old tech’</b></p>\n<p>Oracle Corp.&nbsp;is an “old tech” company that can be considered a value stock, as it trades for only 15.4 times the consensus earnings estimate for the next 12 months among analysts polled by FactSet. The company reported better-than-expected results for its fiscal third quarter after the close March 10 and&nbsp;increased its quarterly dividend by a third. Then on March 11, the stock fell as much as 9%. That “sell the good news” reaction may not be much of a surprise, as the stock had risen 48% over the previous year through March 10.</p>\n<p>International Business Machines Corp.&nbsp;is one of the cheapest stocks on the list, based on its forward P/E ratio of 11.5. The stock was up 2% from a year earlier through the close March 10. It has an attractive dividend yield of 5.10% that is supported by strong free cash flow.</p>\n<p>Victoria Greene, a portfolio manager at G Squared Private Wealth in College Station, Texas,may have been a bit early&nbsp;when naming IBM as an excellent long-term play in June. Stocks with low valuations tend to do well during economic growth phases.\nMark DeCambre underlined the value rallyby pointing out that the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended at a record high Dec. 10, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was still in a correction.\nBut what about tech stocks? There’s plenty of value there too, as you can see in the screen below.\nEconomists polled by MarketWatch expect the U.S. economy to expand by 6% in 2021. Yes, that’s coming off a 3.5% contraction in 2020, according to the latest estimate from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. But the 2021 growth rate would be the fastest since 1984, according to World Bank data.\nTech value stock screen\nThere are several definitions of value stocks, but generally they are those that trade at lower valuations to earnings and typically grow their sales at a slower pace. That said, an individual value stock might also be considered a growth stock. This is illustrated by the Russell indexes.\nThe Russell 1000 Index is made up of the 1,000 largest publicly traded U.S. companies by market capitalization and is reconstituted each year in June. Its forward P/E valuation of 23.2 is relatively low. But Facebook is very much a growth stock — sales increased 22% last year, and analysts expect even better revenue growth of 25% in 2021.\nFacebook trades for seven times the consensus forward sales estimate, compared to a forward price-to-sales estimate of 5.9 for the entire S&P 500 tech sector. But that “high” price-to-sales ratio may not be so important because it is such a profitable company. Its 2020 operating margin of 50% is among the highest on the list.\nCody Willard called Facebook a bargain, not only because of its low P/E valuation but because of the long-term growth path for its Oculus virtual-reality hardware and software.\nThere are 16 companies on the list that are expected to produce double-digit increases in sales in 2021, including Skyworks Solutions Inc. and Qualcomm Inc..Both are expected to grow their revenues by 21% this year.\n‘Old tech’\nOracle Corp. is an “old tech” company that can be considered a value stock, as it trades for only 15.4 times the consensus earnings estimate for the next 12 months among analysts polled by FactSet. The company reported better-than-expected results for its fiscal third quarter after the close March 10 and increased its quarterly dividend by a third. Then on March 11, the stock fell as much as 9%. That “sell the good news” reaction may not be much of a surprise, as the stock had risen 48% over the previous year through March 10.\nInternational Business Machines Corp. is one of the cheapest stocks on the list, based on its forward P/E ratio of 11.5. The stock was up 2% from a year earlier through the close March 10. It has an attractive dividend yield of 5.10% that is supported by strong free cash flow.\nVictoria Greene, a portfolio manager at G Squared Private Wealth in College Station, Texas,may have been a bit early when naming IBM as an excellent long-term play in June. Even though euphoria and emotion drive share-price movements in the short term, operating results determine where a stock heads over the long run. In the case of the aforementioned meme stocks:</p><ul><li>AMC Entertainment is being crippled by debt and the ongoing pandemic. It'sunclear if the company can service its debtor cover projected losses over the next two years.</li><li>Sundial Growers has drowned its investorsby issuing 1.15 billion new sharessince Sept. 30. It's one of the slowest-growing marijuana stocks, and could also be one of the last pot stocks to turn profitable on a recurring basis.</li><li>GameStop waited far too long to shift away from a brick-and-mortar retail model to focus on digital gaming. Cannabis is projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries of the decade. New Frontier Data believes annualized growth in the U.S., the most lucrative pot market in the world, will average 21% through 2025.</p><p>Yet Robinhood investors are virtually locked out of U.S. pot stocks. Since U.S.marijuana stockscan't list on the major U.S. exchanges, and Robinhood won't allow its users to buy over-the-counter-listed stocks, they're instead funneled into underperforming Canadian pot stocks like Sundial and Canopy Growth.</p><p>Canopy Growth does have a boatload of cash, thanks to a number of equity investments from spirits-giant<b>Constellation Brands</b>, but it's done a poor job of putting that capital to work. It's overpaid for acquisitions, and the company's free-wheeling spending generated huge losses for years. Without U.S. legalization, Canopy's valuationremains a red flag.</p><p>If there's any good news here, it's that Robinhood users at least nowhave a way to buy U.S. pot stocks, even if they can't get the unique exposure they might want. The<b>AdvisorShares Pure U.S. Cannabis ETF</b>(NYSEMKT:MSOS)is an exchange-traded fund specifically focused on a variety of cannabis stocks in the United States. EV stocks like Tesla, NIO, and Workhorse Group are garnering a lot of attention, with traditionalauto stocksFord and General Motors also widely owned. You'll also note hydrogen fuel-cell solutions provider Plug Power and FuelCell Energy are on the list.</p><p>It's pretty much a given at this point that the future of the automotive industry is anything that doesn't run on fossil fuels. According to the Society of Automotive Engineers of China, by 2035, half of all new-vehicle sales in the world's largest auto market (China) are expected to be alternative energy (95% of which will be EVs). Investors are simply placing their bets early on what should be a runaway growth trend for multiple decades.</p><p>The problem is that investors have historically overestimated the uptake on next-big-thing technologies. Dating back a little more than a quarter of a century, we saw bubbles burst with the internet, business-to-business commerce, genomics, blockchain, 3D printing, marijuana, and so on.</p><p>Electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell stocks will probably suffer the same fate. This isn't to say there won't be winners, so much as to point out that expectations don't come close to matching reality.</p><p>Tesla, for example,wouldn't even be profitablewithout selling regulatory emission credits to other automakers. That's an unnerving realization for one of the largest publicly traded companies. With another round of spending, it’s hard for him not to be dovish. They are definitely afraid of scaring the market. They’re afraid of disrupting the recovery,” said Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer of Bleakley Advisory Group.</p><p>Rising interest rates have been an overhang for stocks in recent weeks, specifically the tech sector. The jump in yields has forced a shift into value stocks from growth, pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&amp;P 500 to hover near record highs.</p><p>A strong vaccine rollout and the easing of state lockdown restrictions have also boosted reopening stocks.</p><p>Royal Caribbean and Carnival cruise lines gained about 1% apiece in early premarket trading Wednesday. Shares of McDonald's rose 1% after Deutsche Bank upgraded the stock to buy from hold.</p><p>On Tuesday,the Dow lost nearly 130 points, dragged down by a near 4% drop inBoeing'sstock. Higher rates erode the value of future cash flows, hurting growth-oriented companies particularly hard.</p><p>On Wednesday, the Fed will release new economic and interest rate forecasts, which could indicate Fed officials expect to raise rates by, or even before, 2023.The central bank is expected to acknowledge stronger growth, which should put the Fed’s easy policies in the spotlight, especially given the new $1.9 trillion in federal stimulus spending.</p><p>Investors will also hear from Fed Chair Powell, who is likely to move the stock and bond markets with his commentary, despite being unlikely to offer specifics.</p><p>“There’s this assumption [Powell’s] going to be dovish tomorrow.
