But the company did generate positive free cash flow of $116 million in the first quarter, a significant improvement over the $290 million it burned in the prior-year period.</p>\n<p>Looking ahead, Palantir's growing ecosystem of independent software vendors, cloud service providers, and systems integrators should help the company win new contracts in both the government and commercial sectors. Calif.-based financial-tech company said Thursday that it would combine withPioneer MergerCorp.PACX1.64%, a special-purpose acquisition company affiliated with the hedge funds Falcon Edge Capital and Patriot Global Management. The plans were first reported by The Wall Street Journal. Pioneer shares rose about 2% Thursday.</p>\n<p>Acornsautomatically invests small contributions from usersinto baskets of stocks and bonds. It counts more than 4 million subscribers, most of whom pay $1 a month for the service, though Acorns also offers $3-a-month and $5-a-month options for additional features such as bank accounts or retirement plans. As of May, Acorns had $4.74 billion in assets under management, according to a recent regulatory filing.</p>\n<p>As part of the transaction, Pioneer would contribute about $400 million in cash, with another $165 million coming from a related private placement involving funds managed byBlackRockInc.,BLK-0.03%Wellington Management Co. and other investors.</p>\n<p>Special-purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, like Pioneer are corporate shells that raise money from investors and go hunting for a private company interested in taking both the shell’s cash and its stock listing as an alternative to an initial public offering. SPACs have raised more than $100 billion in 2021, according to data provider SPAC Research. But share prices for many SPACs and the companies they have taken publichave tumbled in recent weeks.</p>\n<p>SPACs have become a popular outlet for financial-tech startups, withbanking startup Social Finance Inc.,real-estate platform Better Holdco Inc.andtrading app eToro Group Ltd.all agreeing to multibillion-dollar deals with SPACs in recent months.</p>\n<p>The SPAC fad has also drawn the attention of regulators. The Securities and Exchange Commission is weighing whether to introduce new rules or guidance on SPACs with the aim of safeguarding individual investors,Chairman Gary Gensler told lawmakers this week.</p>\n<p>Individual investors are expected to play a sizable role in Acorns’s merger with Pioneer. Acorns Chief Executive Noah Kerner said in an interview he planned to contribute 10% of his personal stake in the company to fund a program that gives shares to some Acorns customers. Pioneer’s sponsor plans to do the same.</p>\n<p>Existing investors in Acorns include companies such asPayPal HoldingsInc.and Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal as well as celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.</p>\n<p>Acorns projected that it would generate $126 million in revenue this year and $309 million in 2023, up from $71 million in 2020. The company also forecast that its user base would exceed 8 million subscribers by 2023.</p>\n<p>Even hitting that target would make Acorns much smaller than fellow investing startup Robinhood Markets Inc., which had about 20 million users at the end of 2020,the Journal previously reported.</p>\n<p>Unlike Robinhood, Acorns currently doesn’t allow users to buy or sell individual stocks. DASH might eventually be able to report profits as it gains scale, but the lack of profitability in 2020 suggests that operating leverage may prove difficult to come by. I am bearish on the stock at current valuations.</p>\n<p><b>Blockbuster Top Line Growth, No Profits</b></p>\n<p>DASH saw its network report strong growth of 87% year over year for marketplace partner stores and 158% year over year for drive partner stores. Consider that Zoom (ZM), another pandemic beneficiary, generated&nbsp;25.5% GAAP net margins in the third quarter. Shopify (SHOP) generated&nbsp;12.7% GAAP net margins in its latest quarter. DASH’s contribution profit margin is a mere 23.7%, suggesting that the path to profitability will be<b>much</b>harder than tech peers.</p>\n<p>DASH guided for this upcoming year to see Marketplace GOV of $30 billion to $33 billion, up 28% from $24.7 billion in 2020. I estimate this to equate to roughly $3.7 billion in revenue. At recent prices, DASH trades at 17 times forward revenues, which is rich but at first not obviously bubbly in light of the 28% growth rate. However, price to sales is meaningless for DASH because of its low gross margins. I estimate that DASH will earn $877 million in contribution profit in 2021.</p>\n<p>DASH trades at 73 times that number, which makes no sense in comparison to the 23.7% growth rate. It is very rare to see tech companies (with high gross margins) trading at a price to sales multiple even equivalent to their growth rate. I consider such multiples to be bubbly. Yet DASH would trade at $54 per share if it traded at 23.7 times forward contribution profits. Shares have 70% downside to that price.</p>\n<p><b>Conclusion</b></p>\n<p>2020 was a year in which many tech stocks proved the naysayers wrong. Wall Street appears to have become comfortable purchasing stocks of unprofitable tech companies because operating leverage may lead to high profits in the future. Not all tech companies are created equal - DASH’s low effective gross margins suggest that on a comparable basis, its valuation is much more expensive than it looks.</p>\n<p>Even if all the projected contribution profit growth flows directly to the bottom line, then DASH would still earn only $75 million in adjusted net income (that’s after excluding stock-based compensation). Shares trade at 746 times that number. But popularity alone is not a good reason to invest. So if you're looking to buy a lottery ticket, Dogecoin is a good choice. Ultimately, Palantir played a crucial role in his conviction for securities fraud.</p>\n<p>More recently, Palantir partnered with robotics specialist Sarcos. Its software will help the company build mechanized suits for military and industrial workers. When it comes to GameStop, its biggest issue was waiting too long to focus on digital gaming. Even with its renewed focus on e-commerce, total sales for the company declined, once again, during the most recent holiday season. Further, GameStop is almost certainly staring down its fourth consecutive annual loss in 2021.</p><p>If there is some good news here, it's that GameStop isn't a lost cause. AMC recently announced that 99% of its theaters would be open by March 26.</p><p>However, this optimism looks highly flawed. Many of the company's theaters are still facing capacity restrictions, and there are no guarantees that the coronavirus pandemic will officially end in 2021. New variants of the disease, along with vaccine holdouts, threaten to push herd immunity and a return to normal further down the road.</p><p>The company's solvency is also a potential concern. Even with more than $1 billion in cash on hand, Wall Street is expecting AMC to lose more than $1.7 billion, total, over the next two years. This implies the need to issue more dilutive stock or more debt.</p><p>As the icing on the cake, AMC is also losing some of its new release exclusivity to streaming service providers. As a cryptocurrency miner, Riot uses high-powered computers to validate groups of transactions (known as blocks) on Bitcoin's network. For validating blocks, Riot is given a block reward totaling 6.25 Bitcoin (worth about $365,000). In short, the higher Bitcoin goes, the more these block rewards are worth.</p><p>While this sounds like a pretty straightforward investment, it's not that simple. For example, the asset Riot is \"mining\" has had three separate instances over the past decade where it's lost at least 80% of its value. Investors also appear to be betting on the U.S. legalizing cannabis at the federal level. Doing so would allow Canadian marijuana stocks like Sundial to enter the far more lucrative U.S. weed market.</p><p>But if there's something tenured investors are very familiar with, it's the idea that all next-big-thing investments have losers. Even though marijuana is expected to be one of the fastest-growing industries this decade, Sundial hasn't demonstrated anything from an operational perspective to suggest that it'd be a winner.</p><p>One thing Sundial has done successfully is drown its existing investors in a sea of new shares. In a roughly five-month span, the company issued more than 1.15 billion shares via at-the-market offerings, registered direct offerings, and debt-to-equity swaps.
