With interest rates potentially on the rise in 2022, the equity markets may soon be less attractive options than they are right now for investors.
\n
As bond yields rise, investors will be able to earn higher returns without having to invest in a risky and volatile stock market that's trading at all-time highs and due for a correction. Plus, companies carrying lots of debt will likely incur greater interest expenses, worsening their bottom lines in the process.
\n
Two stocks that I would steer clear of heading into next year include High Tide (NASDAQ:HITI) and AMC Holdings (NYSE:AMC). This year, they've both outperformed the S&P 500 by wide margins, but that pattern isn't likely to continue in 2022.
\n
\n
1. High Tide
\n
Cannabis retailer High Tide isn't a profitable business, and likely won't be for some time. Over the trailing 12 months, it has reported 152 million Canadian dollars in revenue and losses totaling CA$32 million. The company's gross margins of 36% aren't bad, but they're likely to get a whole lot worse.
\n
That's because High Tide recently launched a \"discount club loyalty plan\" that will accelerate a strategy focused on value. While it will help attract more customers into its stores and likely boost overall market share, it will come at the cost of smaller margins. The company said in an Oct. 20 press release that as of that day, its retail pot shops \"will begin to offer steep club discounts on cannabis products.\" This move -- to try and gain market share -- looks risky.
\n
Cannabis companies have aggressively pursued growth at all costs, and the danger is that for investors, a lack of profitability and positive cash flow can translate into significant dilution.
\n
Although High Tide has more than doubled this year and soared past the S&P 500's gains of 25%, there could be some tough times ahead for the company in 2022 as it deploys what looks to be a dangerous strategy focused primarily on revenue growth.
\n
2. AMC Holdings
\n
Entertainment company AMC is an even riskier buy, with its stock up 2,000% this year and overdue for a significant sell-off.
\n
A big risk relating to the stock right now is its wild volatility. Investing in a meme stock and what's a popular trend right now can lead investors onto a wild roller-coaster ride. All you need to do is look at the stock's 52-week range of $1.91 to $72.62 to see that while AMC has undoubtedly made some people rich, others are likely regretting their decision to jump aboard the hype. That kind of broad price range might make sense for a hot new tech stock that just went public, but it's not the price movement you would expect to see for a struggling theatre operator.
\n
And the more concerning issue is that the business itself isn't in terribly great shape. Sure, AMC is sitting on $1.8 billion in liquidity, but the company is burning through money and has corporate borrowings totaling $5.5 billion. And although for the period ending Sept. 30 there was improvement, with AMC's revenue of $763.2 million coming in at more than six times the $119.5 million it reported a year ago, that still wasn't enough to pull it out of the red. With a net loss of $224.2 million, the company still has a long way to go to break even. Meanwhile, interest expenses of $88.7 million on its corporate borrowings represented 11.6% of revenue this past quarter. That's a dangerously high rate -- especially in a low-interest rate environment.
\n
Until AMC starts putting significant cash toward paying down its debt, I'd stay far away from this stock. Even before the pandemic, the company wasn't consistently posting a profit. It was a risky buy before, and now with a higher debt load, it is an even more dangerous one to hold in your portfolio.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
2 Risky Stocks to Avoid in 2022
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n2 Risky Stocks to Avoid in 2022\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-11-13 09:00 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
A stronger economy next year and a return to pre-pandemic norms could help some businesses, but it can also make things a bit more challenging for others. For most of 2021, that has been a signal to the loyal AMC shareholders to send the stock to the moon. However, so far it looks like AMC stock is remaining relatively tame. That seems reasonable to me, but I’ll let you decide.
\n
On Nov. 1, the company announced that its October ticket admission revenues were the highest for any single month since February 2020. As someone who is rooting for a strong economy, I celebrate that news. But I’m not sure it changes the narrative for AMC stock.
\n
AMC Shareholders Face Tough Math
\n
Revenue at the end of the company’s most recent quarter was $444.7 million. That was a home run compared to 2020. But it’s a far cry from the $1.2 billion it earned in the first quarter of 2019 or the $1.44 billion it earned in the same quarter in 2018. But to be fair, AMC is doing an exceptional job at improving its earnings outlook. And the company’s debt looks very manageable in the short term.
\n
But does that mean AMC stock should be valued at over $40 a share? At the end of February 2020, AMC stock had a closing price of $6.26. That’s above the level of a penny stock, but it was over 50% lower than the end of February 2019.
\n
Sigh. I know the diamond hands that are holding AMC don’t care. But the economy of 2018 and 2019 was firing on all cylinders. And AMC stock was falling for many reasons. Streaming had something to do with it. However, like e-commerce, streaming has become more pervasive not less. And the nation appears to be recovering from a public health crisis that may permanently change individual’s feelings about sitting in a theater for two hours.
\n
Will Cryptocurrency Capture the Coveted Consumers?
\n
In other news, AMC is polling retail investors and inquiring whether the company should add Shiba Inu (CCC:SHIB-USD) to the list of cryptocurrencies the company is planning to accept as payment. This news is potentially more bullish for holders of AMC stock. By accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment, the theater chain is betting on the coveted millennial and Gen-Z consumers.
\n
Sadly, I can say that even if they did own Dogecoin (CCC:DOGE-USD), my kids would almost rather be anywhere but a movie theater. It’s simply not what they (or their friends) do. That’s one reason I believe if AMC thinks that declining attendance is due to a payment method, they’re missing the plot.
\n
The Future of AMC Stock Remains Unclear
\n
On its most recent earnings call in August, AMC chief executive officer Adam Aron fired up his shareholders (and scolded writers like me) by saying that the company is determined to prove the“conventional wisdom … wrong.”I’m not a shareholder so I hope for the “apes” who do own AMC that Aron is right. Personally, I love going to the movies and always have.
\n
But my experience pre-pandemic was one of dwindling attendance. I don’t see that changing.
\n
My opinion of AMC stock is solely tied to my belief in the future of the cinema experience. With that in mind, I regard the return of cinema viewers as the low-hanging fruit that was to be expected. Like cruise ships, airplanes and hotels, many people didn’t choose to stop going to the movies. The option was not available to them. For most of 2021, that has been a signal to the loyal AMC shareholders to send the stock to the moon. However, so far it looks like AMC stock is remaining relatively tame. That seems reasonable to me, but I’ll let you decide.\nOn Nov. 1, the company announced that its October ticket admission revenues were the highest for any single month since February 2020. As someone who is rooting for a strong economy, I celebrate that news. But I’m not sure it changes the narrative for AMC stock.\nAMC Shareholders Face Tough Math\nRevenue at the end of the company’s most recent quarter was $444.7 million. That was a home run compared to 2020. But it’s a far cry from the $1.2 billion it earned in the first quarter of 2019 or the $1.44 billion it earned in the same quarter in 2018. But to be fair, AMC is doing an exceptional job at improving its earnings outlook. And the company’s debt looks very manageable in the short term.\nBut does that mean AMC stock should be valued at over $40 a share? At the end of February 2020, AMC stock had a closing price of $6.26. That’s above the level of a penny stock, but it was over 50% lower than the end of February 2019.\nSigh. I know the diamond hands that are holding AMC don’t care. But the economy of 2018 and 2019 was firing on all cylinders. And AMC stock was falling for many reasons. Streaming had something to do with it. However, like e-commerce, streaming has become more pervasive not less. And the nation appears to be recovering from a public health crisis that may permanently change individual’s feelings about sitting in a theater for two hours.\nWill Cryptocurrency Capture the Coveted Consumers?\nIn other news, AMC is polling retail investors and inquiring whether the company should add Shiba Inu (CCC:SHIB-USD) to the list of cryptocurrencies the company is planning to accept as payment. This news is potentially more bullish for holders of AMC stock. By accepting cryptocurrency as a form of payment, the theater chain is betting on the coveted millennial and Gen-Z consumers.\nSadly, I can say that even if they did own Dogecoin (CCC:DOGE-USD), my kids would almost rather be anywhere but a movie theater. It’s simply not what they (or their friends) do. That’s one reason I believe if AMC thinks that declining attendance is due to a payment method, they’re missing the plot.\nThe Future of AMC Stock Remains Unclear\nOn its most recent earnings call in August, AMC chief executive officer Adam Aron fired up his shareholders (and scolded writers like me) by saying that the company is determined to prove the“conventional wisdom … wrong.”I’m not a shareholder so I hope for the “apes” who do own AMC that Aron is right. Personally, I love going to the movies and always have.\nBut my experience pre-pandemic was one of dwindling attendance. I don’t see that changing.\nMy opinion of AMC stock is solely tied to my belief in the future of the cinema experience. With that in mind, I regard the return of cinema viewers as the low-hanging fruit that was to be expected. Like cruise ships, airplanes and hotels, many people didn’t choose to stop going to the movies. The option was not available to them. It is logical to expect them to return.\nAt the same time, it’s too early to tell whether the cinema chain is attracting some “new” customers who had previously decided that the cinema experience is not for them. When I see evidence that is happening and is sticky, I’ll be more bullish. Until then, I salute the apes, but am staying away from AMC stock.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1039,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":848300657,"gmtCreate":1635958966613,"gmtModify":1635958966613,"author":{"id":"3567867205688891","authorId":"3567867205688891","name":"我不轻易出手","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$AMC院线(AMC)$@AMC逆转人生,收到请回复","listText":"$AMC院线(AMC)$@AMC逆转人生,收到请回复","text":"$AMC院线(AMC)$@AMC逆转人生,收到请回复","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/848300657","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2766,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":859009482,"gmtCreate":1634633439258,"gmtModify":1634633439258,"author":{"id":"3567867205688891","authorId":"3567867205688891","name":"我不轻易出手","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$AMC院线(AMC)$@AMC逆转人生无解","listText":"$AMC院线(AMC)$@AMC逆转人生无解","text":"$AMC院线(AMC)$@AMC逆转人生无解","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f65cc882a84f3d2b134c72c519b79da8","width":"1152","height":"2376"},{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3d2456313e04b30db33a90b4fa7dcef2","width":"1152","height":"2376"},{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/452a62da689aa29846a2d94259381136","width":"1152","height":"2376"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":15,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/859009482","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":2741,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3550612568446300","authorId":"3550612568446300","name":"邱小哥","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/45aacb459879c8daa5b6ffcf806fd679","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"content":"“升级”差不多一个月了,不出意外,应该还要一段……
","source":"sina_us","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; As part of that discussion, Chapek talked about Disney's various business segments and strategies.
\n
Unsurprisingly, the topic of exclusive theatrical film releases came up -- to which the CEO gave insight into the company's thinking. The House of Mouse is not committing to exclusive theatrical releases in the future. The announcement follows a previous one where Disney said it would exclusively release the rest of its 2021 film slate in theaters. Let's dive deeper and discern why it could be bad news for movie theater chain AMC Entertainment Group (NYSE:AMC).Image source: Getty Images.
\n
Disney is keeping its options open
\n
Since the pandemic onset, Disney has implemented three methods of releasing new films: Direct to its streaming service free to subscribers, simultaneous release in theaters with the option to buy the movie on streaming service for $29.99, and finally, the traditional exclusive theatrical release. Note, studios typically split box-office revenue 50/50 with theater chains.
\n
Out of the three, there is no question AMC would prefer exclusive theatrical releases. That way, if consumers want to see the movie, they have no choice but to go to a theater to watch it. That is, of course, for the first 30 days or 45 days or however long the exclusivity agreement is in place before it moves onto streaming services. With no option other than to wait, consumers could be enticed to watch in theaters.
\n
At the opposite end of the spectrum are the free to existing subscribers direct to streaming releases. These are the worst for AMC because the films never hit theaters, earning zero revenue.
\n
Although not the best, the simultaneous release format gives AMC a chance to bring people to theaters and earn revenue on ticket sales and concessions. Marvel's Black Widow was released in theaters and on Disney+ for purchase at $29.99 on the same day. As of this writing, the film has grossed $378 million in box office sales -- not to mention the revenue earned from selling $9 popcorn and $6 soda.
\n
The film also earned $125 million in sales on Disney+. At $29.99 per purchase, that constitutes at least four million households. You can start to see how a simultaneous release could cannibalize box office sales.
\n
Therefore, AMC must not have been happy with the Disney CEO's failure to commit to exclusive theatrical releases in the future. Disney already committed to exclusive releases for the rest of 2021, so there was hope it would extend the decision long-term, which was not the case.
\n
Home theaters are getting better
\n
Box office ticket sales have been on a steady decline for two decades. The House of Mouse is not committing to exclusive theatrical releases in the future. The announcement follows a previous one where Disney said it would exclusively release the rest of its 2021 film slate in theaters. Let's dive deeper and discern why it could be bad news for movie theater chain AMC Entertainment Group (NYSE:AMC).Image source: Getty Images.\nDisney is keeping its options open\nSince the pandemic onset, Disney has implemented three methods of releasing new films: Direct to its streaming service free to subscribers, simultaneous release in theaters with the option to buy the movie on streaming service for $29.99, and finally, the traditional exclusive theatrical release. Note, studios typically split box-office revenue 50/50 with theater chains.\nOut of the three, there is no question AMC would prefer exclusive theatrical releases. That way, if consumers want to see the movie, they have no choice but to go to a theater to watch it. That is, of course, for the first 30 days or 45 days or however long the exclusivity agreement is in place before it moves onto streaming services. With no option other than to wait, consumers could be enticed to watch in theaters.\nAt the opposite end of the spectrum are the free to existing subscribers direct to streaming releases. These are the worst for AMC because the films never hit theaters, earning zero revenue.\nAlthough not the best, the simultaneous release format gives AMC a chance to bring people to theaters and earn revenue on ticket sales and concessions. Marvel's Black Widow was released in theaters and on Disney+ for purchase at $29.99 on the same day. As of this writing, the film has grossed $378 million in box office sales -- not to mention the revenue earned from selling $9 popcorn and $6 soda.\nThe film also earned $125 million in sales on Disney+. At $29.99 per purchase, that constitutes at least four million households. You can start to see how a simultaneous release could cannibalize box office sales.\nTherefore, AMC must not have been happy with the Disney CEO's failure to commit to exclusive theatrical releases in the future. Disney already committed to exclusive releases for the rest of 2021, so there was hope it would extend the decision long-term, which was not the case.\nHome theaters are getting better\nBox office ticket sales have been on a steady decline for two decades. The in-home viewing experience has improved over the years, while the theater experience has stayed roughly the same, albeit more expensive.\nThe coronavirus pandemic allowed studios like Disney to experiment and learn from multiple film release options. Before the outbreak, the only option had been exclusive theatrical. Studios would not be prudent if they didn't hold onto that option, even if they don't end up exercising it. As part of that discussion, Chapek talked about Disney's various business segments and strategies.
The in-home viewing experience has improved over the years, while the theater experience has stayed roughly the same, albeit more expensive.
\n
The coronavirus pandemic allowed studios like Disney to experiment and learn from multiple film release options. Before the outbreak, the only option had been exclusive theatrical. Studios would not be prudent if they didn't hold onto that option, even if they don't end up exercising it. At the very least, it could improve studios' negotiation power over revenue split and other terms against AMC.
\n
As AMC battles to bounce back from lost revenue during the pandemic, news like this from Disney will not help.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
This Announcement from Disney's CEO Is Bad News for AMC
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThis Announcement from Disney's CEO Is Bad News for AMC\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-09-26 11:56 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) CEO Bob Chapek presented at a virtual conference hosted by Goldman Sachs. At the very least, it could improve studios' negotiation power over revenue split and other terms against AMC.\nAs AMC battles to bounce back from lost revenue during the pandemic, news like this from Disney will not help.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":827,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":164232131,"gmtCreate":1624206054823,"gmtModify":1624206054823,"author":{"id":"3567867205688891","authorId":"3567867205688891","name":"我不轻易出手","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"太没节操了,这个搬运工断子绝孙啊","listText":"太没节操了,这个搬运工断子绝孙啊","text":"太没节操了,这个搬运工断子绝孙啊","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/164232131","repostId":"2144777459","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2144777459","pubTimestamp":1624042900,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2144777459?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-19 03:01","market":"us","language":"zh","title":"探访贾跃亭工厂:杂草丛生","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2144777459","media":"亿邦动力网","summary":"探访贾跃亭工厂:杂草丛生 来源:亿邦动力网媒体探访贾跃亭工厂现状发现,贾跃亭美国造车工厂杂草丛生,一片荒凉。 ,"content":"

","source":"sina_symbol","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; With interest rates potentially on the rise in 2022, the equity markets may soon be less attractive options than they are right now for investors.
With interest rates potentially on the rise in 2022, the equity markets may soon be less attractive options than they are right now for investors.\nAs bond yields rise, investors will be able to earn higher returns without having to invest in a risky and volatile stock market that's trading at all-time highs and due for a correction. Plus, companies carrying lots of debt will likely incur greater interest expenses, worsening their bottom lines in the process.\nTwo stocks that I would steer clear of heading into next year include High Tide (NASDAQ:HITI) and AMC Holdings (NYSE:AMC). This year, they've both outperformed the S&P 500 by wide margins, but that pattern isn't likely to continue in 2022.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. High Tide\nCannabis retailer High Tide isn't a profitable business, and likely won't be for some time. Over the trailing 12 months, it has reported 152 million Canadian dollars in revenue and losses totaling CA$32 million. The company's gross margins of 36% aren't bad, but they're likely to get a whole lot worse.\nThat's because High Tide recently launched a \"discount club loyalty plan\" that will accelerate a strategy focused on value. While it will help attract more customers into its stores and likely boost overall market share, it will come at the cost of smaller margins. The company said in an Oct. 20 press release that as of that day, its retail pot shops \"will begin to offer steep club discounts on cannabis products.\" This move -- to try and gain market share -- looks risky.\nCannabis companies have aggressively pursued growth at all costs, and the danger is that for investors, a lack of profitability and positive cash flow can translate into significant dilution.\nAlthough High Tide has more than doubled this year and soared past the S&P 500's gains of 25%, there could be some tough times ahead for the company in 2022 as it deploys what looks to be a dangerous strategy focused primarily on revenue growth.\n2. AMC Holdings\nEntertainment company AMC is an even riskier buy, with its stock up 2,000% this year and overdue for a significant sell-off.\nA big risk relating to the stock right now is its wild volatility. That kind of broad price range might make sense for a hot new tech stock that just went public, but it's not the price movement you would expect to see for a struggling theatre operator.\nAnd the more concerning issue is that the business itself isn't in terribly great shape. That's a dangerously high rate -- especially in a low-interest rate environment.\nUntil AMC starts putting significant cash toward paying down its debt, I'd stay far away from this stock. Even before the pandemic, the company wasn't consistently posting a profit. It was a risky buy before, and now with a higher debt load, it is an even more dangerous one to hold in your portfolio.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1105,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":868273377,"gmtCreate":1632663812299,"gmtModify":1632667795551,"author":{"id":"3567867205688891","authorId":"3567867205688891","name":"我不轻易出手","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":" fool?","listText":" fool?","text":"fool?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/868273377","repostId":"2170146216","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2170146216","pubTimestamp":1632628602,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2170146216?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-09-26 11:56","market":"us","language":"en","title":"This Announcement from Disney's CEO Is Bad News for AMC","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2170146216","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"The House of Mouse did not commit to releasing films exclusively in theaters beyond this year.","content":"
The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) CEO Bob Chapek presented at a virtual conference hosted by Goldman Sachs.
At $29.99 per purchase, that constitutes at least four million households. You can start to see how a simultaneous release could cannibalize box office sales.
\n
Therefore, AMC must not have been happy with the Disney CEO's failure to commit to exclusive theatrical releases in the future.
Until then, I salute the apes, but am staying away from AMC stock.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1039,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":824753882,"gmtCreate":1634358126486,"gmtModify":1634358126486,"author":{"id":"3567867205688891","authorId":"3567867205688891","name":"我不轻易出手","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false},"themes":[],"htmlText":"之前13f显示木头姐买了20多万股AMC","listText":"之前13f显示木头姐买了20多万股AMC","text":"之前13f显示木头姐买了20多万股AMC","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/824753882","repostId":"2175149901","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2175149901","pubTimestamp":1634341230,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2175149901?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-10-16 07:40","market":"us","language":"zh","title":"“木头姐”对散户抱团股不屑一顾,称它们是“恐龙”","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2175149901","media":"新浪财经","summary":"方舟投资公司的创始人“木头姐”伍德虽然偏好高估值的公司,但她对去年开始兴起的“散户抱团股”似乎不感兴趣。
","source":"sina_us","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Additionally, AMC suffered steep losses in 2020 due to the COVID-19 lockdowns and the general public’s fear of going to crowded public places.\nDespite the recent and long-term headwinds confronting the industry, the “date night” and “out with friends” appeal that the well-located AMC theaters offer is unlikely to go away, at least for the foreseeable future. As a result, while growth may be nonexistent moving forward, there is certainly space for AMC in the economy over the next decade, and it should be able to generate cash flow. (See AMC Entertainment stock chart on TipRanks)\nValuation Metrics\nThat said, just because the company should remain viable does not mean it is a good investment right now. Revenues are expected to increase nearly four times from 2020 lows by 2022, but they will still likely be below 2019 levels. \nAdditionally, EBITDA margins are expected to significantly trail 2019 levels, continuing the long-term declines in profitability. The company is also expected to continue bleeding cash this year and next, putting pressure on its already heavily leveraged balance sheet.\nWhile management has been able to take advantage of the Wall Street Bets-inspired mania surrounding its stock to raise a significant sum of equity capital, the harsh reality is that it still faces a mountain of debt. The company only has $813 million in cash on hand as of its latest quarterly report, against nearly $5.5 billion in long-term debt and nearly $5 billion in capital leases. \nEven more concerning is that its current ratio is a meager 0.64x and the company is generating negative EBITDA, meaning that its cannot cover its interest expense from internally generated cash flows.\nLast, but not least, the stock has become appallingly expensive, as its forward enterprise value-to-sales ratio is a sky-high 11.7x, compared to its historical average of 2x. Despite AMC's highly leveraged balance sheet and deteriorating fundamentals, the stock is still costly.\nWall Street’s Take\nFrom Wall Street analysts, AMC earns a Hold analyst consensus based on 1 Buy rating, 4 Hold ratings, and 3 Sell ratings in the past 3 months. Additionally, the average analyst AMC price target of $3.30 puts the downside potential at a whopping 94.3%. \n\n\n\nSummary and Conclusions\nAMC is coming out of a rough 2020, where it barely avoided bankruptcy. At the same time, its long-term growth potential is evaporating at the expense of explosive growth in online streaming and view-on-demand services. \nThat said, the company has received new life from the re-opening of the economy and a large infusion of speculative capital from the Wall Street Bets crowd. That capital has caused its equity valuation to balloon and has given the company significant new equity capital.\nWhile management is using this as a lifeline to deleverage as rapidly as possible, it is not clear if it will be enough to tide the company over until it can become cashflow positive again. Furthermore, the valuation is so high that it is unlikely that shareholders will receive attractive long-term returns on their investments, even if the company does survive its current cash crunch.\nOverall, this stock might be a bit a too risky for long-term investors. It should probably be strictly viewed as a short-term speculative candidate.\nDisclosure: On the date of publication, Samuel Smith had no position in any of the companies discussed in this article.\nDisclaimer: The information contained herein is for informational purposes only.
