But it’s not as helpful as the more precise disclosures in financial statements, which also have the benefit of conforming to accounting standards.</p>\n<p>YouTube’s $30 billion disclosure is another sign that tech companies are willing to spend large sums to ensure they have appealing content. Recently,Facebook announced $1 billion in spending by the end of 2022, and Bytedance-owned TikTok has committed hundreds of millions to its creators’ fund, to name a couple. This type of spending isn’t exactly the same as Netflix(ticker: NFLX) paying for content, but it’s close.</p>\n<p>What is interesting about the Monday disclosure of $30 billion, is that it gives us just a bit more information to compare YouTube and Netflix. As <i>Barron’s</i> pointed out in a recent cover story about Big Tech, YouTube’s business stacks up with Netflix, at least if you look at revenue. YouTube, an Alphabet(GOOGL) subsidiary, is expected to generate ad revenue of $28.7 billion this year, compared with Wall Street’s projection for $29.7 billion subscriber revenue for Netflix.</p>\n<p>Netflix tells investors how much it spends on content, even if to get to the true figure requires a little bit of work, and close reading. And unlike Alphabet, Netflix is essentially in a single business, selling subscriptions to its content library, and so investors can also use its gross margins to get a sense of those costs too. This year Netflix is expected to generate an operating profit of $6.2 billion, which amounts to a gross margin of 21%.</p>\n<p>Investors don’t get the same amount of information with Alphabet. YouTube only discloses its advertising revenue, not sales from subscriptions and other services. Alphabet only disclosures the operating income for its entire Google Services segment, which includes all its divisions except for Google Cloud, and its moon shot projects housed in Other Bets. It’s hard to know exactly how much cash Alphabet is spending on YouTube overall, paying for content included.</p>\n<p>So the disclosure leaves investors wondering, when exactly YouTube spent the $30 billion? In which quarters?
