Mosquirix, developed by GlaxoSmithKline, is only 39% effective over four years. Meanwhile, there were 229 million malaria cases in 2019 — 94% of them in Africa — and 400,000 people die from the disease every year, almost all of them African children.</p>\n<p>BioNTech will develop malaria vaccine candidates using messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA), which directs the body to make parts of a virus to provoke an immune response. The firm will also produce and test other candidates at facilities in Africa:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>One such candidate, the first shot to clear the World Health Organization's 75% efficacy target, was introduced this year by the University of Oxford. It prevented 77% of cases in a study of 450 children in Burkina Faso, and a 4,800-child trial to confirm the results is in the planning stages.</li>\n <li>BioNTech is aiming to have mRNA malaria and tuberculosis vaccines ready for clinical trials next year, but said malaria could prove as difficult to research as cancer.
