That isn’t why the stock is down, though.
\n
Still, the shutdown is a potentially jarring tidbit for investors. The halt most likely isn’t a Tesla (ticker: TSLA) issue. Instead, it’s probably atangible manifestationof the globalmicrochip shortagethat has been roiling the entire auto industry for the past few months. Tesla didn’t respond to a request for comment about the shutdown or about the chip shortage.
\n
General Motors(GM), for instance, called thechip shortagea billion-dollar headwind to 2021 earnings on its fourth-quarter conference call. AndTaiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM) acknowledged the shortfall on its fourth quarter-earnings conference call too. “As demand from the automotive supply chain is rebounding, the shortage in automotive supply has become more obvious,” said CEO C.C. Wei.
\n
He added the capacity constraints are in, essentially, older technology. “We are working with customers closely and moving some of their mature node to more advanced node, where we have a better capacity to support them,” Wei said.
\n
Most auto makers have chosen to allocate chips to higher priced, higher margin vehicles. So even if volumes fall, profit margins could improve. The issue hasn’t really hit auto stocks yet. GM stock is up more than 20% year to date.Ford Motor(F) shares are up more than 30%.
\n
Analysts believe the situation will resolve itself in a couple of quarters. “We are not overly concerned this supply chain/factory disruption changes the overall delivery trajectory for 1Q and 2021,” wrote Wedbush analystDan Ivesin a Thursday report.
\n
Ives was referring to Tesla. He isn’t worried, but delivery trajectory is a big deal. Wall Street expects deliveries to grow about 110% year over year in the first quarter and about 67% for the full year 2021.
\n
A chip shortage might impact Tesla stock if it prevents the company from growing volumes that quickly. Slower growth is negative. Yet investors, in light of the shortage, might pay less attention to first-quarter delivery and production figures. There is a clear, nonrecurring reason to blame on any shortfall.
\n
For now, investors appear seem to be focusing on the negative. Tesla stock is down 8.1%, at $682.22, in recent trading. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Averageare down 2.5% and 1.8%, respectively. The Nasdaq Compositeis down 3.5%.
\n
It’s tough to blame the production story entirely for the decline. Investors, once again, are worried about inflation. Higher inflation leads to higher interest rates, and higher rates hurt growth company stock valuations more than slower growth companies.
\n
The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield traded above 1.5% Thursday.
