But, what happens when you get a Formula 1 world champion and put them in a four-rotor 26B Mazda RX-7 drift car? Well, thanks to the Internet and the marketing grunt of that energy drink with a bull on the side of its cans, we now know.  Red Bull Motorsport has released a video of two-time Formula 1 champ (going on three) Max Verstappen being trained up in the art of going sideways really, really fast by New Zealand’s own ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett. SuppliedWhiddett [left] is a Formula Drift Japan champion. I think Verstappen has a few trophies in the cupboard, too ... Whiddett recently starred at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which presumably led to the opportunity to stage this smoke-show session with Verstappen and his beloved 600hp ‘MADBUL’ RX-7 drift car. As a motorsport buff of sorts, something I found interesting is Whiddett’s admission that Verstappen is only the second person to ever drive his prized MADBUL; a car he’s competed with in numerous iterations over a period of decades. “Nobody has driven this car, bro. You’re the first person to drift this car. This car made me who I am. It’s as raw as it gets,” says Whiddett.  The video, which you can view above, plots Verstappen’s progress as his learns to do doughnuts, figure eights, and scandinavian flicks, before showing him the ‘Horner Corner’ – testing Verstappen’s ability to hold a consistent drift through a long, sweeping corner.SuppliedMad Mike’s ‘MADBUL’ RX-7 has been drifted all over the globe. But, this is the first time it’s ever been steered by someone else. Surprisingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly), Verstappen appears to pick up drifting quite quickly, aided no doubt by the quality of his trainer and his car. It seems one of the biggest challenges for the current F1 points leader was learning how to use the clutch and manual shifter – two things absent from just about everything he’s ever raced. “I need to get used to the clutch, it’s so different for me,” he says at one point.  At a time when Formula 1 is often criticised for being too easy and too technical, the speed in which Verstappen picks up drifting serves as a great reminder that these racers are some of the best on the planet.  Like the rest of the F1 paddock, Verstappen is currently enjoying the championship’s Summer break. The series fires back into action at the end of August for his home event at Zandvoort.  For Mad Mike, meanwhile, it’s been a hectic year. Prior to his appearance at Goodwood, Whiddett had a successful showing at Pikes Peak; claiming the fastest course time for a rotary-powered car in his new highly modified Mazda3.
