This is happening for the first time since 2018, the quantitative analyst said, and is a signal of the lack of interest from the institutional buyer.\n“This is an unusual development and a reflection of how weak bitcoin demand is at the moment from institutional investors that tend to use regulated CME futures contracts to gain exposure to bitcoin,” he said, referring to the derivatives marketplace.\nIn a normal environment, bitcoin futures trade at a higher, positive spread over current or spot prices.\n“We believe that the return to backwardation in recent weeks has been a negative signal pointing to a bear market,” the analyst said.\nEven with the introduction of crypto-related funds and the increasing participation in the futures market by institutional investors, they haven’t caused a normalization of the futures to spot spread and the market is still “crypto rich and cash poor,” Panigirtzoglou said.\nThe price of bitcoin is down more than 40% from its all-time high above $64,000 reached in April.
