$京东(JD)$ The U.S. is practicing "serious" protectionism against Chinese firms, says JD.com (JD +3.5%) Chairman/CEO Richard Liu.
That's going to backfire, he said at the World Economic Forum: "One day it will hurt the U.S. economy too."
Liu's reaction is one of many in the wake of yesterday's import tariffs on solar panels and washing machines.
JD.com wants to not only overtake Alibaba but also become a global player, Liu says, but it's been difficult to get into the U.S. market.
It's focused on Southeast Asia for now and growth both organically and via acquisition: "It's hard to use only one model. In Southeast Asia, we look for local partners to develop business, but we don't want to exclude acquisitions."
