Favorable government policies and growing awareness that electric vehicles can play an important role in reducinggreenhouse gas emissions are responsible for growing investments in the EV industry.

Additionally, the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack this month resulted in surging gas prices at the pump with prices in some locations more than doubling, which makes electric vehicles look a lot better.

The Biden administration has committed to curbing climate change and is proposing toinvest$174b as part of a $2tr infrastructure package into the electric vehicle market. This investment includes the installment of 500,000 charging stations across the country to support electric vehicle adoption and move the US away from fossil fuels.

The US electric vehicle market is a big opportunity for US automakers and growth in the global EV market has so far chiefly been driven by China. Based on Bloomberg'sElectric Vehicles Outlook, every tenth passenger car sold by 2025 will be an electric vehicle. This percentage is expected to rise to 28% by 2030 and to 58% by 2040 as adoption accelerates based on more aggressive government policies to curb climate change and falling battery prices.

China is the largest market for electric vehicles based on size and Chinese firms have made considerable investments in battery technology to defend their market-leading position.

(Source: Statista)

But the US and European countries are catching up fast with EV-friendly government policies accelerating investments in the industry and adoption.

(Source:Bloomberg New Energy Finance)

While Tesla has been leading the charge on the EV market, there is still plenty of time and room to get in on the electric vehicle business.

Ford made itsambitionsclear this week when Jim Farley, Ford's CEO, said the firm wants 40% of global sales to come from EVs by 2030. The CEO also said that Ford will increase its electric vehicle investment program by $8b to $30b through 2025 as the EV market is the biggest growth opportunity. Ford's original EV plan called for $22b in EV investments.

Ford's $22b electrification plan included a $1b investment into a German EV manufacturing plant in Cologne, which will start to produce all-electric passenger vehicles for the European market at scale in 2023. Ford's European passenger vehicles are targeted to be all-electric by 2030.

Ford is also forming a joint venture with SK Innovation, a South Korean leader in lithium-ion battery production. The joint venture will produce high-performing batteries for use in electric vehicles. SK Innovation has supply partnerships with multiple major global automakers.

(Source:Ford+ EV Update)

This week, Ford announced theF-150 Lightning Pro, which is the first-ever all-electric F-Series truck. The F-150 Lightning Pro has received a positive reception and Ford has already collected 70,000 reservations since it was revealed. Ford is bringing EV technology to its best-selling truck and will equip more models with battery-powered technology next year.

The F-150 Lightning Pro is not Ford's first attempt to present an electric car with mass appeal. Ford's 2021 Mustang Mach-E is an all-electric sport utility vehicle that is starting to be a real threat to Tesla. Ford sold 6,614 Mustang Mach-E from January to March 2021 and the SUV has beenresponsiblefor taking a bite out of Tesla's market share in the EV market.

Shares of Ford reacted ecstatic to Ford's fundamental commitment to electric vehicles; they surged eight and a half percent on Wednesday. This is the effect the green energy revolution can have on a large, mainly fossil fuel-reliant automaker that has been plagued by production problems and thatcut its FY 2021 production guidancedue to the global chip shortage.

Shares of Ford reached a 5-year high yesterday.

(Source: Finviz)

But Ford is no Tesla. Not yet.

Ford, however, is emerging as an electric vehicle contender that Tesla should take seriously. Taking market share away from Tesla after just a few months of selling the Mustang Mach-E SUV is not an easy task and it shows that Ford's EV capabilities may be underestimated.
