The comparison of Ford to Nio both are not at the same level as their businesses are not altogether the same albeit both are automakers.
Nonetheless, Nio is up and coming as is xpeng and other EV makers, thus making competition stiffer. I will think that Nio's success lies in convincing markets in the west to look beyond the China badge. Otherwise, conventional wisdom rationale will still favour traditional automakers, plainly attributed by past success records.
