Under that court-approved settlement, Musk and Tesla each paid $20 million to resolve regulatory charges arising from an earlier Musk tweet that the company was on the verge of being taken private.</p>\n<p>Tesla “has abdicated the duties required of it by the court’s order,” a senior SEC official in the agency’s San Francisco office wrote to the company in May of 2020, according to the report. The company had failed to enforce the agreed upon procedures “despite repeated violations by Mr. Musk,” the letter added.</p>\n<p>Musk has displayed open contempt for the SEC even in the aftermath of the 2018 settlement, including an off-color tweet posted in July of 2020, after the latest letters to the company.<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d667aecf277db30480faf29b4545862\" tg-width=\"570\" tg-height=\"186\">Shares of Tesla fell $1.42, or 0.23%, to $622.48 in after-hours trading, Tuesday.
