Hongqi is the second automotive brand in the past month to announce the adoption of CATL's Choco-SEB battery swap solution.
China FAW Group's Hongqi brand has joined CATL's battery swap alliance, becoming the second in the past month to do so after Changan Automobile.
Hongqi announced on December 14 that it signed a framework agreement with CATL and CATL subsidiary Contemporary Amperex Energy Service Technology (CAES) for a battery swap program.
The three parties will work together to promote Hongqi's models using CATL's Choco-SEB (swapping electric block) battery swap technology, and collaborate on battery swap services, and battery asset operations, according to Hongqi's announcement.
The partnership is also an important milestone in the cooperation between China FAW and CATL in the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry, and the three companies will work together to promote the adoption of the Choco-SEB battery swap business model, Hongqi said.
The companies will work to create a more convenient, affordable and safe NEV experience for consumers and accelerate the spread of electrified mobility and zero-carbon lifestyles, the announcement said.
Hongqi is the second automotive brand in the past month to announce the adoption of CATL's Choco-SEB battery swap solution.
Changan entered into a similar partnership with CATL and CAES on November 22, when the automaker showcased the battery swap-enabled Oshan 520 electric sedan from its sub-brand Oshan.
The Oshan 520 is built on CATL's Choco-SEB (swapping electric block) battery swap solution, which saves car owners more than two hours of charging time per day, Changan said at the time.
CATL launched the battery swap brand EVOGO on January 18, 2022, and CAES is the operating entity for the new brand.
EVOGO's batteries are called Choco-SEB, and vehicles can use one or more battery blocks to match different mileage requirements.
China FAW, one of China's largest car companies, had ventured into battery swap-enabled models for its product array, albeit mainly for the ride hailing market.
In November 2021, Hongqi delivered 100 E-QM5 models, the brand's first battery swap-enabled models, to its cab industry partners in Changchun.
Earlier this year, Hongqi filed for battery swap-enabled models for its EH7 and EHS7, but with lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by BYD's battery division FinDreams Battery.
In May, Nio (NYSE: NIO) announced a partnership with China FAW on battery swap, where the two will collaborate in areas including the development of battery swap-enabled models.
