Intel (INTC) said Friday it plans to initially invest more than $28 billion to construct two new chip factories in Licking County, Ohio.

The investment is intended to help raise production to meet the "surging" demand for semiconductors, the company added.

Intel's shares rose 3.2% in recent Friday trading.
