Technology-heavy Nasdaq-100 futures weakened by 0.5%. Major indexes closed higher Monday, rebounding from a sharp selloff last week, as concerns about the variant seemed to ease.\n\nInvestors are trying to parse the risk posed by the new strain. Drugmakers have raised concerns that existing vaccines might be less potent against Omicron, but a lack of concrete information so far is driving uncertainty, and with it, volatility in stock markets.\n“Markets are kind of in a holding pattern where no one knows if this is going to be a problem or not,” said Mike Bell, a strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management. “Until we have evidence either way on whether the existing vaccines still work against Omicron it doesn’t make sense to make a big bet in either direction.\nThe yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, viewed as a safe asset to hold, fell to 1.443% Tuesday from 1.529% Monday. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions.\n\nIn commodity markets, Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, fell 2.9% to $71.10 a barrel Tuesday, having risen by 1% Monday.\n\nInvestors awaited testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Tuesday for clues on how the new variant might impact the outlook for inflation and interest-rate rises. Mr. Powell is expected to say that the new strain could intensify the supply-chain issues that have fueled a spike in inflation.\n\n\nShould the Omicron strain prompt fresh lockdowns it would put the central bank in a difficult position by worsening inflation and strengthening calls for rate rises just as the economy and markets take a hit, said Seema Shah, chief strategist at Principal Global Investors.\n\n“We had been starting to see this glimmer of hope that some of the supply-side constraints were starting to ease,” she said. “If we go back into fear mode you would be looking at those supply-side bottlenecks being exacerbated.”\n\nAlso in focus Tuesday will be data on house prices and consumer confidence, set to be released at 9 a.m. ET and 10 a.m., respectively.
