The rally in energy exploration and production stocks lately has been a case in point.\nMid-Caps That Are a Bargain\nThese are the 10 stocks with the lowest price-to-earnings ratios, based on projected 2022 earnings, in the S&P Midcap 400 index.\nE=estimate,Source: FactSet\nHome builders and steel makers now have some of the lowest P/E ratios in the stock market because investors are concerned that the robust conditions in both industries won’t last.\nHot-rolled steel prices have more than tripled, to $1,900 a ton in the past year thanks to strong global demand, a government push to curb emissions in the Chinese steel industry, and a scarcity of scrap steel that is used as an input by many steel makers.\nSteel makers are enjoying a bounty, and they are cutting debt, buying back stock and making new investments. Bulls argue that the underlying profitability of the industry has risen even assuming a drop in record steel prices.\nU.S. Steel, at a recent $21.50, trades for just 3.4 times projected 2022 earnings. Wall Street wasn’t thrilled recently that the company plans to spend $3 billion on a new steel mill—some investors would rather see capital returns to holders.\nCleveland-Cliffs,at $19.80, fetches 5.5 times 2022 earnings and is using its huge 2021 earnings to cut debt and buy back stock. Credit Suisse analyst Curt Woodworth has called the company a “free cash flow machine” and has an Outperform rating and a $34 price target. Steel Dynamics, at around $58, trades for 6.2 times estimated 2022 earnings. It recently said it expected nearly $5 a share in third-quarter earnings.\nKB Home, whose stock trades around $41, is a leading home builder and trades for just 5.6 times earnings. Investors have been concerned that the company’s home deliveries and margin fell short of expectations in the August quarter.\nEvercore ISI analyst Stephen Kim views the impact of these issues as modest. He has an Outperform rating and projects KB could earn close to $10 a share in its fiscal 2022 ending next November.\nMidsize home builders like Taylor Morrison and Tri Pointe are even cheaper than KB. Taylor Morrison, recently around $26, trades for four times 2022 earnings for a small premium to book value, while Tri Pointe, at about $22, fetches little more than five times forward earnings.\nJ.P. Morgan analyst Michael Rehaut wrote after Taylor Morrison’s June quarterly earnings that investors were overly concerned about the sustainability of housing demand. He has an Overweight rating and price target of $45.\nBrighthouse Financial, a spinoff of MetLife (MET), is a major annuity provider and its shares, at around $41, trade for just three times estimated2022 earnings and for a fraction of book value.
