But not all stocks performed that well. Let&#39;s look at the losers.</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average had a pretty good year, rising about 18.75% in 2021. The recent run to record highs certainly helped its year-end tally.</p><p>While better than its long-term average, the index lagged the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq, which climbed 27.1% and 22% this year, respectively.</p><p>The Dow did outperform the Russell 2000’s 13.9% return, though.</p><p>In 2021, the Dow’s worst-performing stocks were Disney, Verizon, Boeing, Merck and Honeywell, in that order.</p><p>I want to know if these stocks can make a recovery in 2022, so let’s look at the charts.</p><p><b>Trading Disney Stock</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/913a06cd9cb2ee4c4becdf8ee3e281f8\" tg-width=\"1139\" tg-height=\"866\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Daily chart of Disney stock.</span></p><p>Disney was the worst-performer in the index, down 14% in 2021.</p><p>The stock went through a pretty rough stretch in the fourth quarter, falling in 13 of 16 sessions. The three “up days” in that stretch were gains of 0.25%, 0.10% and 0.21%.</p><p>Essentially, pauses before the next breakdown.Earnings didn’t help matters either.</p><p>Now the company is looking to dominate the box office in 2022 and it’s got investor shoping the stock is a dominant force next year too.</p><p>Disney is off to a good start, all things considered.</p><p>It’s putting in a higher low<i>and</i>a higher high. Now contending with the 10-week moving average and the prior gap-fill level near $157.50, bulls are looking for a continuation to the upside.</p><p>If they get it, bulls will no doubt be looking for a move to fill the gap from November near $174 and a tag of the 200-day moving average.</p><p><b>Trading Verizon Stock</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5c2a0fe4bf1df0a3c87f66db0b07ef63\" tg-width=\"1139\" tg-height=\"809\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Weekly chart of Verizon stock.</span></p><p>Next is Verizon, which is lower by 11.4% so far this year. If we include the dividend, the losses drop to just 7.5%.</p><p>The stock had a nice rip earlier this month, bursting back through $52 and the 10-week moving average. From here, bulls want to see these two levels hold as support.</p><p>Should they fail, it puts the $50 area back in play. For multiple weeks in a row, this level was strong support. If it fails, we could see a retest of the March 2020 low just below $49.</p><p>A dip to this $48.50 to $50 area that holds as support<i>could</i>be a dip-buying opportunity.</p><p>On the upside, let’s see if Verizon can push through the 21-week moving average and rally to the $54 level. Over $56 and who knows, perhaps Verizon can see the $60 to $62 zone again.</p><p><b>Trading Boeing Stock</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f99b9826d65af46ed7e694058f00cf18\" tg-width=\"1139\" tg-height=\"809\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Daily chart of Boeing stock.</span></p><p>Boeing enjoyed a huge rally in late-2020 to its high of $278.57 in March 2021. Since then though, it’s been trapped in a brutal downtrend.</p><p>The stock recently bottomed just below $188 with strong divergence on the RSI (blue arrow) before rebounding in the latter half of December.</p><p>The key in the short-term will be $212.68 — the December high.</p><p>If Boeing stock can go monthly-up over this level in January, it could result in a quick move back up to the 200-day moving average. Above that and the $230 resistance zone is on the table.</p><p>On a break of the low near $185, Boeing stock<i>could</i>face more downside. Specifically, there is a pretty big unfilled gap down near $158.50.</p><p><b>Trading Merck Stock</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/71ba1bc40dfa374db6b8e82122b9ec31\" tg-width=\"1139\" tg-height=\"809\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Daily chart of Merck stock.</span></p><p>Merck stock went through what many traders call a falling wedge (blue lines). Now breaking out and up from the formation, bulls are looking for more gains in 2022.</p><p>That’s particularly true as the stock was up 17% on the year less than two months ago. On a move over $84.50, Merck stock could make another push up toward $90 and the gap-fill.</p><p>It also pays a 3.6% dividend yield for investors that are interested.</p><p><b>Trading Honeywell Stock</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4ada72c3a0d15a55a543c5817396b0eb\" tg-width=\"1139\" tg-height=\"809\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Daily chart of Honeywell stock.</span></p><p>Last but not least we have Honeywell, which is down 2.6% on the year. With the dividend, the stock is down just 0.6%.</p><p>Like Boeing, Honeywell stock barely cracked the December low last week, but rebounded hard when it did — and did so with strong divergence on the RSI (blue arrow).</p><p>That said, Honeywell isn’t making a higher high yet.</p><p>On a rally, let&#39;s see how it handles the $212 area. Not only is this a key level, but it’s also likely where the declining 50-day moving average will come into play.</p><p>A push through this area likely puts the 200-day moving average on the table. Above the 200-day opens the door to the $235 resistance zone.</p><p>If shares dip below the 10-day and 21-day moving average, it’s possible the stock retests the $200 area.</p><p>A break of the low at $198.10 could put the low $190s and the 21-month moving average in play. The recent run to record highs certainly helped its year-end tally.While better than its long-term average, the index lagged the S&P 500 and Nasdaq, which climbed 27.1% and 22% this year, respectively.The Dow did outperform the Russell 2000’s 13.9% return, though.In 2021, the Dow’s worst-performing stocks were Disney, Verizon, Boeing, Merck and Honeywell, in that order.I want to know if these stocks can make a recovery in 2022, so let’s look at the charts.Trading Disney StockDaily chart of Disney stock.Disney was the worst-performer in the index, down 14% in 2021.The stock went through a pretty rough stretch in the fourth quarter, falling in 13 of 16 sessions. The three “up days” in that stretch were gains of 0.25%, 0.10% and 0.21%.Essentially, pauses before the next breakdown.Earnings didn’t help matters either.Now the company is looking to dominate the box office in 2022 and it’s got investor shoping the stock is a dominant force next year too.Disney is off to a good start, all things considered.It’s putting in a higher lowanda higher high. Now contending with the 10-week moving average and the prior gap-fill level near $157.50, bulls are looking for a continuation to the upside.If they get it, bulls will no doubt be looking for a move to fill the gap from November near $174 and a tag of the 200-day moving average.Trading Verizon StockWeekly chart of Verizon stock.Next is Verizon, which is lower by 11.4% so far this year. If we include the dividend, the losses drop to just 7.5%.The stock had a nice rip earlier this month, bursting back through $52 and the 10-week moving average. From here, bulls want to see these two levels hold as support.Should they fail, it puts the $50 area back in play. For multiple weeks in a row, this level was strong support. If it fails, we could see a retest of the March 2020 low just below $49.A dip to this $48.50 to $50 area that holds as supportcouldbe a dip-buying opportunity.On the upside, let’s see if Verizon can push through the 21-week moving average and rally to the $54 level. Over $56 and who knows, perhaps Verizon can see the $60 to $62 zone again.Trading Boeing StockDaily chart of Boeing stock.Boeing enjoyed a huge rally in late-2020 to its high of $278.57 in March 2021. Since then though, it’s been trapped in a brutal downtrend.The stock recently bottomed just below $188 with strong divergence on the RSI (blue arrow) before rebounding in the latter half of December.The key in the short-term will be $212.68 — the December high.If Boeing stock can go monthly-up over this level in January, it could result in a quick move back up to the 200-day moving average. Above that and the $230 resistance zone is on the table.On a break of the low near $185, Boeing stockcouldface more downside. Specifically, there is a pretty big unfilled gap down near $158.50.Trading Merck StockDaily chart of Merck stock.Merck stock went through what many traders call a falling wedge (blue lines). Now breaking out and up from the formation, bulls are looking for more gains in 2022.That’s particularly true as the stock was up 17% on the year less than two months ago. Some megacap stocks trade at substantially higher multiples relative to their free cash flow (FCF) than Apple does. If Apple can close the gap and command a similar premium, multiple expansion alone could help the stock rise substantially.</p><p>Consider that <b>Microsoft</b> (NASDAQ:MSFT) trades at 42 times its free cash flow. Apple, meanwhile, trades at only 31 times its FCF. Apple&#39;s stock price would have to rise 35% for its FCF valuation multiple to match Microsoft&#39;s. This alone would put the company&#39;s market capitalization at about $4 trillion.</p><p>There is actually a good case for Apple stock&#39;s valuation to see multiple expansion in the coming years: The tech giant&#39;s services business, which is a more reliable revenue source than its products, is growing as a percentage of Apple&#39;s total business. With a more predictable and reliable revenue source (that appears to still have lots of upside) increasingly driving Apple&#39;s growth, investors may start rewarding the stock with higher valuation multiples. In fiscal 2021, Apple&#39;s services revenue was 19% of revenue, up from less than 18% of revenue two years ago and 15% three years ago.</p><p>But even without this much multiple expansion, strong fundamentals could lift Apple shares meaningfully in 2022 and beyond. Consider that the company is seeing strong double-digit revenue growth recently, with record fiscal fourth-quarter revenue across every geographic and product segment. Specifically, Apple&#39;s fiscal fourth-quarter revenue came in at $83.4 billion, up from $64.7 billion in the year-ago quarter. But management estimates that revenue for the period would have been $6 billion higher if it weren&#39;t for supply constraints during the period.</p><p>Suffice to say, Apple&#39;s business is firing on all cylinders. With momentum in every geographic and product segment, it wouldn&#39;t be surprising to see double-digit growth rates in the company&#39;s revenue and free cash flow in fiscal 2022, providing solid substance for more share gains.</p><h2>Expect a bumpy ride</h2><p>While it is possible that Apple&#39;s market capitalization swells to $4 trillion before the end of 2022, there are no guarantees in investing. Even if everything goes well for Apple as a business, the stock itself could do poorly in the near term. Sometimes, for one reason or another, stocks fall in and out of favor. So even though shares appear undervalued today, the stock could fall before it rises.</p><p>And there&#39;s always a chance that Apple sees multiple <i>compression</i> instead of multiple expansion. While Apple&#39;s business fundamentals appear worthy of a Microsoft-like premium, the company&#39;s shares have usually traded at a discount to Microsoft&#39;s in terms of valuation multiples because Microsoft&#39;s business model is considered to be more sustainable and less dependent on blockbuster product hits like new iPhones. Apple notably also makes more than half of its sales from a single product: the iPhone. That is supported by the large customers (who pay more than $5,000 annually) growing at 58% year over year and Asana's dollar-based net retention rate consistently at 115% or better.</p>\n<p>These results are impressive and support the tremendous growth of the stock so far, but what could make this a market beater again in the coming year? First of all, the company is just getting started. Almost 100,000 of its customers are paying less than $5,000 annually. This is a massive opportunity to land and expand with its existing customer base. This should be aided by the fact an effective team-based collaboration tool is more useful when used as part of a larger team effort. With 739 of its customers spending more than $50,000 annually, it's clear that companies have benefited by expanding to more employees across the enterprise.</p>\n<p>Secondly, the market for collaborative applications and project and program management tools is huge. Management estimates the market could reach over $50 billion by 2025. With an annual run rate of $400 million, it has less than 1% of the market share.</p>\n<p>This stock is not without its risks, though. It has experienced a significant pullback and is now more than 40% off its high from earlier in the year. Even with the pullback, the stock is valued at a 35 price-to-sales ratio. The company will have to continue to put up solid growth numbers to support its valuation. But given the stickiness and growth of its powerful platform, you would be smart to pick up this gem as this market-beater could be up for another year of great performance.</p>\n<h2>DigitalOcean: Earn big returns by serving small businesses</h2>\n<p><b>Will Healy</b> <b>(DigitalOcean): </b>DigitalOcean has successfully targeted a segment of the cloud industry ignored by the largest players. It offers cloud infrastructure services to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), companies often too small to support a full-fledged IT department.</p>\n<p>However, its most compelling competitive advantage may come from the DigitalOcean community. Developers within this community can receive and give support to <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> another to address various challenges. This is invaluable for the one-person IT departments its product supports and gives these clients a good reason to bypass large providers like <b>Amazon </b>and <b>Microsoft</b>.</p>\n<p>Straightforward pricing is another advantage. This makes dealing with DigitalOcean much easier for its nearly 600,000 customers in 185 countries. Also, with the acquisition of Nimbella, DigitalOcean can now offer serverless computing. This will eliminate server management needs and allow one-click deployment of APIs, software that enables apps to communicate with one another.</p>\n<p>Investors have also taken to the company. Despite a steep decline in recent weeks, DigitalOcean stock has risen by over 90% since its March initial public offering. The financials have likely helped, with revenue for the first nine months of 2021 coming in at $309 million, 34% higher than in the first three quarters of 2020. Also, it lost $7 million during that period, a considerable improvement from the first nine months of 2020 when the company lost $30 million.</p>\n<p>Moreover, the company forecasts between $426 million and $428 million in revenue in 2021. Analysts believe that number could reach $563 million on a consensus basis in fiscal 2022, an increase of 32% if the predictions hold. Thus, the financials could continue to push DigitalOcean stock higher.</p>\n<p>Admittedly, even after the stock fell 40% from its high, its price-to-sales (P/S) ratio stands at 19. That comes in higher than the Microsoft sales multiple of 14 or Amazon's ratio of 4.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, even with the higher valuation, selling may be the worst mistake DigitalOcean investors can make right now, as SMEs make up 99.7% of all businesses in the U.S. alone. This leaves the company with a tremendous addressable market that could benefit from a cloud product oriented toward such enterprises.</p>\n<h2>Apple: Bucking the tech downtrend</h2>\n<p><b>Danny Vena (Apple):</b> In a year when high-growth tech stocks had difficulty keeping pace with the broader market, it seemed there was a flight to bigger, safer, more established companies -- and Apple certainly qualified on all counts.</p>\n<p>The tech giant maintained the title of the largest publicly traded company on the planet. Apple's market cap grew to $2.86 trillion (as of this writing) and market watchers are taking bets as to whether or not the stock will surpass the $3 trillion benchmark before the clock winds down on 2021.</p>\n<p>There were plenty of reasons investors seeking a safe haven flocked to the iPhone maker.</p>\n<p>Apple has more than 1 billion active iPhones worldwide, giving the company a captive audience for its services, including Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple News+, and Apple Card. These relatively recent additions join perennial favorites like iTunes, the App Store, and iCloud, just to name a few. This growing list of services generated more than $68 billion last year, up 27%, and representing nearly 19% of Apple's revenue in fiscal 2021.</p>\n<p>iPhone sales were the headline in fiscal 2021, growing 39% year over year and generating revenue of nearly $192 billion. It's also worth mentioning that there are an estimated 25% of active iPhones in the upgrade window, putting Apple squarely in the much-vaunted multi-year \"super cycle.\" Brisk demand for the iPhone 13 suggests it's the device many have been waiting for, which would no doubt push Apple's results higher. The holiday season is often the company's biggest quarter for sales and business is booming, with reports of strong demand and growing wait times.</p>\n<p>Not only that, but iPhone accessories are big business. This includes companion products like the Apple Watch and AirPods. The company's wearables, home, and accessories segment has become an important part of its business, generating sales of $38 billion, up 25%, and generating more than 10% of Apple's revenue last year.</p>\n<p>There are other reasons investors sought shelter in Apple this year. It has a rock solid balance sheet with nearly $66 billion in net cash. The company also has a profit margin that exceeds 25%, and its strong net income fuels its ever growing dividend, which has grown more than 130% since 2012. Apple isn't the main driver of social problems coming out of Silicon Valley, but I would not have high expectations for the profit potential of the Metaverse- most of the use cases tossed around seem indistinguishable from using FaceTime.</p>\n<p>There's a huge amount of interest in electric cars right now, so the best way to get some hype into a company (besides putting Bitcoin on your corporate balance sheet) is to generate speculation that you might produce an electric car. Apple has ample R&amp;D resources, but to enter the car business for them makes about as much sense to me as starting an Apple Airline. The car business is notorious for being labor and capital-intensive and for having low margins. Apple could simply license a car, but are manufacturers going to be willing to shell out the royalties Apple wants, and is Apple comfortable dealing with potential brand issues if the car ends up having recalls or safety issues? I don't think the car business is a good fit for Apple's expertise in consumer electronics.</p>\n<p><b>Apple's Challenges For 2022 And Beyond</b></p>\n<p>1. Whether earnings estimates are realistic without continued fiscal stimulus is an issue for the whole US economy, but a particularly thorny one for consumer-facing companies like Apple. Apple had its best year ever in 2021 as consumers were flush with cash from government stimulus. All of these concerns aren't specific to Apple, but they do affect the company.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>2. The central question for 2022 and beyond is whether Apple's pre-pandemic earnings in the $3 per share range or so are more indicative of long-term demand for Apple products, or whether the $5.67 per share that they earned in 2021 is the new normal. I believe the earnings estimates for the stock market at large are too high for 2022 in the absence of stimulus spending. (i.e., the typical American household made a ballpark of $60,000 post-tax in 2021, but $10,000 of this was directly or indirectly from the stimulus, such as the three rounds of checks, expanded unemployment, the student loan pause, etc.). As it turns out, if you give the typical American family an extra $10,000 to spend that they don't have to work for, statistically, many of these people will upgrade their iPhones. Going forward, consumers will only be able to spend what they actually earn. Apple has positive tailwinds from services revenue, but I don't think they can sustain iPhone sales at anywhere near the level they have achieved in 2021. I'd guess Apple earns somewhere between $4.50 and $5.00 in 2022.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>3. Apple cited the supply chain as a challenge in their last quarterly earnings conference call. I think the supply chain will be less of an issue in 2022 than it has been in 2021, but because consumer demand is lower in the face of falling inflation-adjusted wages and no more stimulus. This said, chip shortages will not help Apple's cause, and the longer they go on, the more it caps Apple's upside earnings.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>4. Apple's golden goose is services revenue. Increasingly, however, Apple is running up against antitrust laws. We've seen Apple cut App store fees recently under pressure from regulators, and we've seen Apple and Google (GOOG) get scrutiny for the $15 billion or so that Google will pay Apple this year for the right to be the default search engine. Apple makes more from their deal with Google than they likely ever will from the Metaverse. The risk is that regulators in the US or EU end up pushing back on this and cutting off the flow of money here. This deal is worth about 1/6th of Apple's net income for the year, and even more if iPhone sales slow.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>5. Apple's earnings per share growth has been driven in large part by buybacks. When Apple traded at a 10-12x PE throughout most of the 2010s, this allowed Apple to get huge returns on shares it bought back. With the PE ratio over 30x now, this strategy is only 1/3rd as effective, and dependent on the business to continue to outperform at levels that are historically very hard to achieve. I'd rather see Apple pay a dividend here.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>6. Believe it or not, Apple traded at a discount to the S&amp;P 500 PE ratio for much of the 2010s. Now it trades for a large premium. I generally don't make market calls based on sentiment, but I think a PE ratio closer to the S&amp;P 500 at large (20x or so) is more appropriate than a large premium. There's no particular reason the market will enforce this, but that's where I feel is correct based on Apple's underlying business.
