Here’s What It Sold.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1176431153","media":"Barron's","summary":"If you’ve been waiting forBerkshire Hathawayto spend a decent chunk of its $144 billion in cash and ","content":"
If you’ve been waiting forBerkshire Hathawayto spend a decent chunk of its $144 billion in cash and equivalents on an acquisition, you’ll have to wait a little longer—maybe a lot longer. Not only did Berkshire fail to make a significant purchase in the second quarter, but CEO Warren Buffett and his investment lieutenants, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, were net sellers of about $1 billion of stocks in the period, according to the company’s latest 10-Q filing.
\n
Berkshire pared its stakes in three drug stocks—AbbVie,Bristol-Myers Squibb, andMerck—all acquired in 2020. The company also sold seven millionGeneral Motorsshares in the quarter, cutting its holding to 60 million shares, now worth $3.2 billion. Berkshire trimmed itsChevronposition slightly, and added to its stake in grocerKroger.
\n
There were no changes in its two largest holdings. The company’sApplestake held steady at 887 million shares, now worth $134 billion, andBank of Americastood at 1.01 billion shares, worth $41 billion. public health and massive financial help from the government.

The Labor Department's closely watched employment report on Friday will be the first to show the impact of the White House's $1.9 trillion COVID-19 pandemic rescue package, which was approved in March. It is likely to show the economy entered the second quarter with even greater momentum, firmly putting it on track this year for its best performance in almost four decades.

\"We are looking for a pretty good figure, reflecting the ongoing reopening we have seen,\" said James Knightley, chief international economist at ING in New York. \"With cash in people's pockets, economic activity is looking good and that should lead to more and more hiring right across the economy.\"

According to a Reuters survey of economists, nonfarm payrolls likely increased by 978,000 jobs last month after rising by 916,000 in March. That would leave employment about 7.5 million jobs below its peak in February 2020.

Twelve months ago, the economy purged a record 20.679 million jobs as it reeled from mandatory closures of nonessential businesses to slow the first wave of COVID-19 infections.

April's payrolls estimates range from as low as 656,000 to as high as 2.1 million jobs. New claims for unemployment benefits have dropped below 500,000 for the first-time since the pandemic started and job cuts announced by U.S.-based employers in April were the lowest in nearly 21 years.

Also arguing for another month of blockbuster job growth, consumers' perceptions of the labor market are the strongest in 13 months. But the pent-up demand, which contributed to the economy's 6.4% annualized growth pace in the first quarter, the second-fastest since the third quarter of 2003, has triggered shortages of labor and raw materials.

From manufacturing to restaurants, employers are scrambling for workers. A range of factors, including parents still at home caring for children, coronavirus-related retirements and generous unemployment checks, are blamed for the labor shortages.

\"While we do not expect that lack of workers will weigh noticeably on April employment, rehiring could become more difficult in coming months before expanded unemployment benefits expire in September,\" said Veronica Clark, an economist at Citigroup in New York.

Payroll gains were likely led by the leisure and hospitality industry as more high-contact businesses such as restaurants, bars and amusement parks reopen. Americans over the age of 16 are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, leading states like New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to lift most of their coronavirus capacity restrictions on businesses.

BROAD EMPLOYMENT GAINS

Solid gains were also expected in manufacturing, despite a global semiconductor chip shortage, which has forced motor vehicle manufacturers to cut production. Strong housing demand likely boosted construction payrolls.

Government employment is also expected to have picked up as school districts hired more teachers following the resumption of in-person learning in many states.

Robust hiring is unlikely to have an impact on President Joe Biden's plan to spend another $4 trillion on education and childcare, middle- and low-income families, infrastructure and jobs. Neither was it expected to influence monetary policy, with the Federal Reserve having signaled it is prepared to let the economy run hotter than it did in previous cycles.

Millions of Americans remain out of work and many have permanently lost jobs because of the pandemic.

\"Nobody knows what the economy is going to look like post COVID,\" said Steven Blitz, chief U.S. economist at TS Lombard in New York. \"There is a stubbornly high number of people who have been permanently displaced. The (spending) plans are about giving the economy a higher trajectory of growth so that these people can be hired sooner rather than later.\"

The unemployment rate is forecast dropping to 5.8% in April from 6.0% in March. The unemployment rate has been understated by people misclassifying themselves as being \"employed but absent from work.\"

To gauge the recovery, economists will focus on the number of people who have been unemployed for more than six months as well as those out of work because of permanent job losses.

The labor force participation rate, or the proportion of working-age Americans who have a job or are looking for one, likely improved last month, though it remained below its pre-pandemic level. More than 4 million people, many of them women, dropped out of the labor force during the pandemic.

With the lower-wage leisure and hospitality industry expected to dominate employment gains, average hourly earnings were likely unchanged in April after dipping 0.1% in March. That would lead to a 0.4% drop in wages on a year-on-year basis after a 4.2% increase in March.

\"We will be watching average hourly earnings very closely for signs that difficulty in hiring qualified workers is beginning to boost compensation,\" said David Kelly, chief global strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management in New York.

\"If tightening labor markets boost wage growth, then the inflation bounce which the Fed is anticipating to be modest and transitory could turn out to be stronger and longer-lasting, leading to earlier Fed tightening.\"

The anticipated drop in wages will have no impact on consumer spending, with Americans sitting on more than $2 trillion in excess savings. What it means is that a platform's value is dependent on how many people use it. The more people join, the more appealing it is for others to sign up too.
\n
In its S-1 registration filing, Roblox attributes its growth to the increasing number of social connections being made on the platform. The company expects daily active users to reach between 37.6 million to 39.6 million in the first quarter, representing a year-over-year growth rate of 59% to 68%, although growth is expected to significantly slow down for the full year following a sharp acceleration in engagement during the pandemic.
\n
A telling sign of Roblox's staying power is that there are eight million developers on the platform making content. These developers created more than 20 million experiences, and all of that content is driving high engagement. In 2020, users spent 30 billion hours on Roblox, more than double the previous year.
\n
Another factor that will lead to further growth is the fact Roblox is free to join.It generates revenue when users purchase virtual currency that can be spent on additional content. This drove $923 million in revenue last year, nearly doubling the prior-year total.
\n
2. Expanding to older users
\n
Currently, Roblox appeals mainly to kids, but the company has a big opportunity if it can bring in older users. Most users are under the age of 12 with only 15% above the age of 25. Roblox is already seeing progress to widen its reach. Last year, daily active users between the age of 17 to 24 grew faster than those under 13.
\n
To appeal to older age groups, the company is making investments in higher-fidelity avatars, more realistic experiences, 3D spatial audio technology, and other features. This could make Roblox a more dynamic platform for business uses and educational experiences. As the installed base of users expands, Roblox could also see more partnerships with top consumer brands for marketing new products, thereby opening up other ways for the company to make money.
\n
Roblox is just scratching the surface of its potential. Consider that the average person who plays video games is between 35 and 44 years old, according to the Entertainment Association of America, much older than the average user on Roblox. Sony's PlayStation network has over 100 million monthly active users, and some of the top video game producers have many times that number.
\n
There's a big market out there for Roblox to pursue. But it might take time for the company to advance its technology to provide more sophisticated experiences that would appeal to older age groups. This is where the company's cash resources will come in handy.
\n
3. The business model is working
\n
Roblox has beenfree-cash-flowpositive each year since 2018, and that's despite investments in infrastructure and prioritizing compensation for developers and creators. It spent $328 million in developer exchange fees last year, or roughly a third of total revenue. Roblox still managed to generate $411 million in free cash flow and expects to generate more than $300 million in cash from operations in 2021. This shows the business can invest in the future without burning a hole in its pocket.
\n
If the company has success in expanding to other use cases, that would be a big bonus for investors, because Roblox should do fine sticking to games and educational experiences. There are more than two billion people around the world who play games. It's expected to begin trading Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker \"PATH.\"

UiPath originally filed for its IPO on March 26 have opted for a direct listing instead.

The New York-based company originally said it was registering up to 24.5 million shares, at a range of $43 to $50 a share, to raise up to $1.22 billion. On Monday, it hiked the range to between $52 and $54 a share and increased the number of shares it planned to offer.

Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan, B of A Securities, Credit Suisse, Barclays, and Wells Fargo Securities are among the underwriters.

Here are five things to know about UiPath:

The 'humble' company notes rapid expansion

In the S-1, UiPath Chief Executive, Chairman and co-founder Daniel Dines wrote about his company having \"humility\" as a core value, in that it allows its developers to listen and adapt quickly to the needs of the customer. Founded in Bucharest, Romania, in 2005, the company was incorporated in Delaware six years ago after working its way up from \"10 people in an apartment in Romania,\" Dines wrote.

\"We went against the rules of perfecting the business model first in one territory, and instead we rapidly expanded globally to the United States, Europe, and Asia simultaneously,\" the CEO wrote in a letter.

At a current annualized renewal run rate, or ARR, of $580 million, UiPath bills itself as \"one of the fastest-growing modern enterprise software companies ever.\" ARR is a metric often used by software-as-a-service companies to show how much revenue the company can expect based on subscriptions.

While UiPath notes International Data Corp. sees the automation software market at $17 billion in 2020, with an expected rise to $30 billion by 2024, the company said its \"fully automated enterprise\" software gives it a current market opportunity of more than $60 billion.

CEO holds most of the cards

Since 2015, UiPath has raised about $2 billion in eight funding rounds, according to Crunchbase. That funding doesn't appear to have bought much voting power in the company, though.

UiPath's Class B shares carry 35 votes, while Class A shares -- being offered in the IPO -- carry one vote. The S-1 filing revealed that CEO Dines holds 100% of the Class B shares and 6.5% of the Class A shares, for 88.1% of the voting power.

The only entity that comes close to that is venture-capital firm Accel, which began building its stake in 2017, and now claims about 101 million Class A shares, or 24% of those shares, for 3.1% of the voting power. Earlybird Management, with 9.5% of Class A shares, commands 1.2% of the votes.

The company has reined in expenses

For the fiscal year 2021 ended Jan. 30, the company booked $607.6 million in revenue for a loss of $92.4 million, compared with $336.2 million in revenue for a loss of $519.9 million in fiscal 2020. In 2018, UiPath reported fiscal 2019 revenue of $148.5 million and a loss of $261.6 million.

As revenue rose 81% for fiscal 2021, UiPath reduced sales and marketing costs by 21%, research and development costs by 16%, and general and administrative expenses by 10%.

No specific plans for the funds

If underwriters exercise all option for shares in the offering, UiPath expects to bring in net proceeds of about $1.34 billion, based on a $56 stock price. With about $357.7 million in ready cash on the books as of Jan. 31, the company isn't earmarking raised capital for any specific use.

\"As of the date of this prospectus, we cannot specify with certainty all of the particular uses for the net proceeds to us from this offering,\" the company said in its April 19 filing. \"However, we currently intend to use the net proceeds we receive from this offering for general corporate purposes, including working capital, operating expenses, and capital expenditures.\"

COVID-19 boosted diverse customer base

As of Jan. 31, the company claimed having nearly 8,000 customers, with 63% of the those in the Fortune Global 500. About 1,000 of those customers account for more than $100,000 in ARR apiece, UiPath said. The company highlighted such customers as Adobe Inc. $(ADBE)$, Applied Materials Inc. $(AMAT)$, Chevron Corp. $(CVX)$, Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. $(CMG)$, CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. $(CRWD)$, CVS Health Corp. $(CVS)$ and Uber Technologies Inc. $(UBER)$.

That's compared with the 700-or-so customers the company claimed in 2018.

The company's current customer base is spread out enough where one customer can't upset revenue significantly. \"No customer or channel partner accounted for more than 10% of our revenue for the year-ended January 31, 2021,\" according to the S-1.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic helped. On Jan. 31, 2020, the company said it had about 6,000 customers, so during the year of the pandemic alone, UiPath grew its number of customers by 33%.

\"As the pandemic persisted, global demand for automation continued to accelerate as automation became essential for business execution and performance in a remote working environment,\" UiPath said.

\"While the pandemic may have accelerated the adoption of automation, the need for organizations to address extraordinary cost pressures, preserve and grow revenue, and adapt to ever-evolving end-customer needs illustrates the durability of the demand for digital transformation and the resilience and power of automation in even the most challenging times,\" according to the company.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html;
